Gaze upon the crossover magic!

For those who don't know, Dragon Quest Monsters: Battle Road is an Arcade game that was released in Japan in 2007. It involves the player using various monsters, either from within the game itself or from collectible cards that can be scanned in, and arranged into monster teams. Special cards can initiate special attacks, which involve known characters from all across the series (Though the original Battle Road preceded Dragon Quest IX) unleashing mighty attacks filled with flashy effects, awesome scenes, and silly inside jokes. All hosted by our good friend Morrie from DQVIII. Ragazzo!

There has since been a follow-up arcade game, as well as a home version known as Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road: Victory! for the Wii. It included characters from DQIX, and is the source of the intro I posted above.

And here are all of the special character attacks. They are broken up into separate videos, since there are a lot of 'em. Some are very obviously more epic than others. There are attacks, and then there are special attacks, which are shown towards the end of the videos.

1-3
-sniff- .....They grow up so fast!

4-6
A lot of my favorites are in this one, since this is really where we start getting into the iconic characters. This includes Kiryl going Meta, Torneko calling forth a gaggle of older men a la Yangus's Golden Oldies in DQVIII, Mister 5 calling forth a herd of monsters, Deborah performing one of the most epic heel-drops ever, and quite possibly the best use of Healie the Healsime ever conceived. And I think you'll be happy to witness everyone's favorite pink-haired Carpenter showing off his strength in perhaps the best way possible.

7-9
It won't be long until you are treated to an underpants dance!
Even though 7 is the only one I don't know very well, I love the special attacks of the hero, Maribell, and Keifer very much. They are bursting with character! Yangus is classic as usual, and I must say that the attacks that Pavo and Stella have are surprisingly two of my favorites. They are so outrageous!

For a series like DQ, seeing everyone fly around is a tad weird for me. But I always forget about that when I see that this is really one of the best celebrations of DQ ever, fully of gags and nudges and just plain fun.

Unfortunately, the US never got it.

So, what do you know about it? Favorite attacks? Can you find any of the villain special attacks? 'Cause I can't find the collection of them.

Have YOU ever played it? If so, do tell! Do tell!

I'm currently watching the videos/loading them and from the small amount I already watched (slow loading/loading them all at once >_< ), oh my good lord, I will import this game if I watch anymore if it. whee I really liked the intro from what I've seen. I lost track of all the references when I blew up from seeing the Zenethian Sword, Roto's symbol, a King Slime and so on.

I started watching the character movies and I really liked Moonbrooke's the most so far, although I'm not really sure the Mirror of Ra could be used as an attack then again, Sailor Neptune anyone?, but I really did like how she looked.

EDIT: I am now finished watching them all, I really liked DWVII's boss (?) animations (honourable mention to Stella's groovy acid trip). While most of them were our heroes jumping off their favourite animal and firing off a laser/Hadouken (Man-douken in Taloon's case, eh? Eh?) from their weapon, DWVII's cast incorporated more storyline facts to their animations. Also, for Alena, I couldn't help but think about Dragonball Z when I watched her do her thing. xD

If one was to import one of these games, I can imagine that they would be a real hassle to get running, what with the technology involved and the number of region boundaries that would need to be breached for each. I have a hard enough time getting Ballet Dragon Quest to run on anything other than my laptop!

The part of the intro that always makes me giggle because of how over-the-top it is is when the heroes are flying away into the distance. It's hilarious especially since the 9th hero is the last one and he's the only one that CAN actually fly, so he's flapping his wings while the others are just floating in the wind! xd

Total DBZ vibes. And as a DQ fan and an all-around Toriyama fan, I am allowed to give a clarifying statement beyond "WHOA THE ART LOOKS LIKE THE GUY THAT DID DBZ WOW (Which all DQ fans get at some point, I get it all the time in the good ol' US)." Yeah, Alena especially shows some DBZ-esque attack spark. I guess, especially with characters from 8, that's always a fallback. I was sort of sad that they didn't do more with the 8th hero. We don't even get a dragonsoul? Gigaslash is cool, but... I feel as though there isn't anything iconic done with him. Maybe because he is iconic for more little things? That's why I like him, I know.... I dunno.

I actually really like what they do with the hero from 5, and not just because he's my favorite one. I love how he moves and how his clothing falls. It's part of his character, as well as his father's character, that he can be so rough-and-tumble, but also look very kingly and together-looking. I love how he looks in the red King Gotha mantle (Gotta draw that someday!), and his special attack with all the monsters is one of my favorite ones. I love how he looks when fighting mister VII bossman in the intro. Rough looking, but doesn't do more than whip his gnarled staff in front of him and block that fire. A collected move.

God I'm such a dork.

Come to think of it, there is a lot of 5 in these games. Primarily the earlier ones, if you've seen any footage from that.

Ah yes, region locked things, I was pretty disappointed when I found out that the DSi is region locked and I immediately reverted back to my DS lite. -_- But I don't think (to the best of my knowledge; haven't imported any Wii games yet) the Wii is region locked, I mean I bought an imported controller for my sister for her birthday awhile ago and it works just fine on the Wii, but taking the risk of it being region locked, I think I'll just play it safe for now. D: Although even just owning a hard copy would be enough for me.

I know, I found that very humourous too, that should be the new mode of transportation in DQX, as it seems the series enjoys their unique yet awesome "airships"! In the intro, I found it silly how the boy got all the kick a** Metal Babble gear and the girl got.. a starting staff and a Cotton Robe, total sexism. D:< Also, I enjoyed how the Descendant of Erdrick looks nothing like he should, the least they could have done is make him wear all of Erdrick's equipment or something. D:

Unlike some people who complain about Toriyama's artwork being too similar (DQIII Merchant class and Marle, anyone?) I actually like it, it brings memories of my past back to me. Even if I had older siblings who were total fans of Sailor Moon and Gundam Wing was just a tiny bit high tech for a child to understand, when I got the TV to myself, I always would try to watch DBZ, I guess that's what brings that extra punch to the series (tenfold in VIII) is the extra feeling of Toriyama. I agree with you on VIII's lack of iconic stuff, although I haven't completely finished it, from what I played, I know well enough that they lost a lot of possible potential with Guv in this game, also seeming as VIII is one of the top tier selling games of the series. But hey, at least they made up for him in that Jessica and Yangus were amusing to watch.

With V, I really did enjoy it, I love the hero of V (-looks at my current avi), but I thought there was a lack of actual physical attacking going on in his case, I mean all the other heroes used their weapons and whatnot, but V more or less acted as a "Summoner" (forgive my FF reference Dx ). But granted, he DOES only have a stick to defend himself with whereas all the other heroes have swords (Falcon Knife Earrings in Alena's case), but then again, I guess that could be a manly trait for V to not have to resort to deadly weapons to defend himself rather than his own wit and a less than deadly stick.

Eh, join the club, we'll rule the world one day! And I haven't seen any in-game trailers of the game yet, rather just the videos you showed me, I think I should, in the recommended videos, right, or is there one you can personally recommend me?

I've seen a lot of these videos, but they are hard for me to find, since most of the titles are in Japanese. There are a lot of videos and such that people in arcades recorded with cellphones and whatnot that are scattered around youtube. The ones from the console games are easier to capture, obviously, so they make cleaner videos. I navigate through luck and the recommended videos. There are a fair amount of videos in the original arcade games that weren't in the home version, perhaps removed for the IX stuff. I remember seeing a slime-shaped kill-SAT nuking the opposing team from orbit, as well as an attack from Pankraz and Sancho on a ship.

Speaking of 5, as I said, I smell a fair bit of 5. I recall in a nintendo power interview with Yuji Horii, he actually admitted to 5 being his personal favorite. I can't help but keep that in mind. The original arcade version had, as a boy and a girl avatar, the hero's two children (Parry and Madchen) as leaders of monster teams, also smelling of 5. Also, remember that the music that plays during the special attacks is the boss theme from V (DS version here, since it was the first one I found). I recall the two children sporting the series' most iconic armor sets in the trailers, with Madchen wearing Edrick's armor, and Parry (rightfully so) wearing the Zenithian equipment.

I love 5, so I don't care. :B

I know that in one of the trailers, it shows Gwaelin (insert But Thou Must joke here) putting Edrick's helmet on mister yellowhair's head. I'm not sure why they gave him a new design. Probably to just give him a design underneath the armor.

I'll look for more stuff after I run some errands.

I should probably creep around Youtube and find these videos, I'm very interested in this game and haven't seen any gameplay at all, rather than just the amazing animations of the attacks and whatnot. I know in the suggestions bar I saw a lot of potential game moments, and even if I just watch one of them to get the feel of the game, it mean a lot to me. Then again, if I watch one, knowing me, it'll turn into a mad hunt to find and watch every character in action. >_>

I'm not sure if it's just me, or the fifth game in each series always happens to be an amazing game in general (Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem being prime examples in my personal opinion) and Dragon Quest is no exception to this rule. Actually, if I recall, the creator of the Final Fantasy series once said that FFV was his favourite. Although DQV wasn't my personal favourite just because of the monster system, I really did like it as it was seemingly the first in the series to incorporate character personality from the start (opposed to IV which sort of gave the supporting cast personality then off'd with it after the hero had his time to shine) Was the hero's kids in the trailers? I didn't notice mainly because I was still in awe looking at everything to notice details. However, from what you told me, I like that Madchen is wearing Erdrick's equipment, from a statistic/nerdy point of view, it technically is stronger than the Zenethian equipment and even acceptable for DQ women to equip, the original Roto being a prime example.

I just found it odd that the Descendant of Erdrick had blond hair due to the fact that his Grandfather/mother had black hair, but then again, Moonbrooke had purple hair and Cannock has orange, the DQ/W world has some pretty interesting traits when it comes to inheritance. =o

Well, if your LPs are anything to go by, quite a bit of babymaking happened in between games. :B

I know you aren't as big a DQV fan as I am, but I really do think that the heroes started becoming a bit more lively since then. Judging by what I just witnessed in DQVI, as well as what I know about the hero of VIII, I would say that they kept this trend up. It's definite series growth if I ever saw it.

But back to battle road. I'll talk about this in another thread.

Here's a trailer for the original arcade version.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3mLcd7WPVg

From what I've seen, it seems like a bigger, more controlled version of the monster battling from DQVIII (hence Morrie, I guess). You get your cards from wherever, scan 'em in (or use monsters that come with the arcade machine proper if you don't have any), then fight and survive and collect power and stuff for crazy special attacks that may or may not vary depending on what cards you have.

Now here's a trailer for the second arcade version, Legends.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htwnIC-IZ0o&feature=channel_video_title

For some reason, the video proper doesn't play for me there, but if you go to the youtube profile of the fellow who posted it, you can watch it there.

Instead of having Edrick's sword, this game has the Zenethian sword lodged in it. Judging by the trailers, it was this game that introduced the human fighters (DQ5 kids in this case) and their equipment. It also has the villains from various games in it, the vast majority of the animations, as well as smaller bosses (Like the dead-at-arms monster I just fought in DQVI literally five minutes ago... The castle ruin from VIII seems to have gotten shrunk a bit and... Was that Don Mole bodyslamming it? confused )

And I've shown quite a bit from Victory already.

That's a fact to say the least, although Gwaelin and D.O.E both had blond hair, Gwaelin was a player I guess to spawn purple haired Moonbrooke. cool

I'm not too sure who my favourite hero in the series is, on one hand, the nostalgia glasses point heavily at Midenhall, but on the other hand, Botsu (uncannon [?] manga name for VI) is pretty badass as well.

Oh man, I have this thing for collecting cards, you see, if DQ Legends was here, I'd totally blow my paycheck on it. <3 Nonetheless, it all looks badass, and every video I see they always blow me away, I loved how the trailer in the first one used III's soundtrack (for the most part).

Truth be told, I kind of liked the Legends trailer more simply due to the fact that I love my humans being the biased person I am, not to mention the glorified beginning of Erdrick's Sword and the Zenethian Sword being flashed around. Stuff like that makes me very excite.

In any case, it all looks fantastic, and I'm glad to see that the Warrior characters are getting just as much love as the Quest characters, Midenhall in 3D is almost too much for me to take!

There's a lot to say about Dragon Warrior II, besides it being the hardest one in the series to date (in my experience). What makes me always come crawling back to my NES to pop it in is most definitely the music, although it is a personal opinion of mine, but I think Dragon Warrior II is ranked top tier in the series's soundtracks (IV being my favourite, II being second and V being third), I think it's time (or soon) to make a tier list for the soundtracks. <3

I loved it! Once again, Toriyama shows the world how easy life would be if we all could just fly. ;D
Now, if only treasure flew out of Gwaelin's cell when you rescued her like that. stare
