The red haired stallion picked his way through the foothills of his home, pleased that the heavy snows of winter were beginning to thaw and give way. The breeze was warm and spoke of nicer days to come, while the dead trees were dotted with tiny buds. How Althalus yearned for the touch of spring and summer, and he missed the days of his roaming youth when he had spent many a season in the warmer climates of the south.
Still, while he loved to travel, there was one thing the warmest beaches and most interesting of cultures lacked: his family. It was why he had refused to take to the trail upon returning with Nivriti. He had been lucky she had agreed to return to his homeland to stay and raise their family. While he didn't mind the rogue lifestyle, he wasn't entirely sure he wanted his children exposed to ambling to and from one home to another and constantly moving back and forth. Shoot, even Althalus couldn't escape the call the family, and had happily retired his rogue nature and settled within the mountains he had been raised in.
How life had changed.
Not only had he retired from roaming, but he had six children fully grown. It amazed him how far he had come since his youthful days and foalhood ruggedness. When he was young he had believed he would never settle with another, would always roam and be free, and have the most beautiful mares as his companions. Now he was a father, an happily settled with the most beautiful of mares. Would he do anything differently?
Not at all.
Picking his way through the hills, he made his way to a small trickling stream. The waters were cold from the mountain melt, and he enjoyed the scent of fresh water and moist earth. Nivriti was stretching her wings somewhere high above, and his children were grown and scattered, living their own lives. It seemed a long time since he'd had such peace and quiet.

Elizabeth was in an exceptionally good mood this morning. As usual, she had arisen to see her mate off that morning; Ambroise's duties kept him away from their home in the foothills for large parts of the day, so she liked to take advantage of every opportunity to exchange pleasant words with him before he vanished. An early riser by nature, it hadn't been a hardship for her to manage the nearly pre-dawn risings, and she cherished the peaceful nature of the morning. Mornings had become harder since, to her joy, amazement, and delight, she had become pregnant. These days, sleep dominated her life; she went to bed early, and mornings were a chore. She still rose when Abmbroise did and made sure he took the time to graze or eat before going...then as soon as she was gone, she would usually go back to sleep for a few hours. It was a very indolent lifestyle, one that her active mind found a bit of a trial...or would, if it weren't for the ultimate joy she felt in her situation. Having children had long been a dream of hers, one that she had resigned herself to never reaching, when Ambroise had asked for her hand. Their unconventional courtship had resulted in a happy, accommodating partnership that now promised her her greatest wish. She was more than willing to deal with extra sleep! But for now, she was well-rested; having just woken up from yet another nap, she was on her way over to the nearby stream for a drink, her gravid belly making the trek slow and much more arduous than it should be. But as she came close, she saw, to her delight, a splash of red against the snow up ahead. A visitor, how wonderful! And with that color, if was undeniably a relative; her mother-in-law had been a frequent visitor, but even at this distance she could see it was a stallion. Fenghuang, then? It had been too long since she'd seen him, the little rascal! Smiling, she called out gaily, "Fenghuang, is that you?"

The silver eyed stallion looked up as he heard the heavy, hoofed approach of another. Part of him wondered if it might be one of his brothers, or even one of his parents! Goodness knew the herd was large and varied enough that it wasn't often surprising to find ones path crossing with another. A small part of Althalus hoped it might be Nivriti, returned from her flight and come to visit and share a drink! His ears pricked, and he caught the flash of a pale color against the browns of the earth and hills.
Hmmm.
Definitely not Nivriti! And the her coat was too pale to be one of his brothers. Hmm. So that meant either a visitor, a guest, or someone who roamed a little too deep in the woods! But then she spoke, and her words confirmed that she was indeed a she and it was likely she was some sort of guest! For who else would know of Fenghuang?
Ah, but Althalus was never one to shy away from a social situation, especially when the guest involved a mare! While he had never been a complete rake, he had a silver tongue, and had inherited an extreme appreciation and respect for those of female nature. He was a natural charmer, and a bit of a flirt, but he never lead a mare on nor disrespect them like some rakes of the world.
"Unfortunately, m'lady, my brother Fenghuang is not present. But I do hope I might make an acceptable substitute." He grinned up at her, his silver eyes bright with good humor and his usual sort of mischief. Althalus was the complete opposite of his strict and work-a-holic brother. While he appreciated the responsibility that sat upon Ambroise's shoulders, Althalus had never envied his position in life. Oh no. All work and no play was not the sort of lifestyle that the red maned soquili had ever taken heed of. He wasn't as much of a trouble or mischief maker as Feng, but he certainly possessed an insanely relaxed nature, and was always full of charm and good humor that his maturity into marriage and fatherhood had hardly erased.

Elizabeth had realized rapidly on the heels of her greeting that the stallion was NOT Fenghuang; his coat was far darker than Feng's rosy red, and lacked the swirls that decorated the younger male. Oh dear. But fortunately, the stallion hadn't been offended at being called the wrong name, and had even provided a useful bit of information himself: he was Fenghuang's brother, and consequently Ambroise's! It was an unexpected event, but one that she found quite delightful: thus far, Fenghuang was the only one of her mate's sibling that she had had an opportunity to meet. It was a pity that Ambroise wasn't here to make proper introductions, but she was now filled with more energy at the thought of meeting an in-law than she had in some time.
Cresting the little little rise, Elizabeth came into full view of the stallion (and provided him with a full view of herself, pregnant belly and all!) and offered him a pleasant smile. "I do beg your pardon, I saw your coat and assumed you were Fenghuang. Now that I see you closer up, I can easily see my mistake, but please be assured that you are just as welcome as he. I've been looking forward to meeting more of you!" With an apologetic nod, she made her way over to the water and took the requisite drink, the mountain water cold and crisp and delicious. That taken care of, she was all Elizabeth: Manners, composure, and good breeding!
Straightening up, she reviewed the stallion once more, offering him a smile. "From your coat color, I suspect that you would be either Althalus or Killian, but assuming has done me no service this morning, so I shall let you clarify that for me at your leisure. I am Elizabeth, and it's my pleasure to welcome you to our little home. I'm afraid you won't find Ambroise about, though; he left hours ago, as I'm sure you can believe." Having had her arrival passed from guard to guard, messenger to messenger, Elizabeth was operating on the additional assumption that all of Ambroise's siblings knew their eldest brother was mated and consequently knew of her; the remoteness of some of their situations had never factored into the equation, nor the idea that she might be a total mystery to some of them!

Althalus had to suppress raising his brows when the mare in question came in to view. While he had expected meeting a mare, he hadn't expected to see one who was so . . .well . . . pregnant! It wasn't that he was a stranger to such thing, of course not, but it just hadn't factored into play that this stranger would be in such a state. Still, he was quick to make note and returned his attention full-force to the mare at hand and the words she spoke.
She was a lovely mare, truly, with a pale, cream-touched coat and a mane and tail that were the color of wheat. Furthermore, she possessed a horn - a unicorn! It wasn't that Althalus wasn't accustomed to other breeds, but many within the family were of wind and regular variety. Oh, there were a few families that were more adorned than others, but to find a unicorn in his midsts was a delightful change. But what was most peculiar, was that she seemed to already know of him!
Who on earth was she!?
Realizing he was likely being rude, the silver eyed male gave a small shake of his head. "Ah, do forgive my sudden speechlessness, m'lady! I am often without words, but I have to say they suddenly escape me." And what was this about Ambroise not being home? . . . Home!? Our little home? From the inflection in her voice and her attitude, it seemed as if the spot of land wasn't just a spot of Islagiatt. It was specifically this Elizabeth's and . . . Ambroise?
No. Way.
Surely she had to mean Fenghuang! "I'm none other than Althalus, and it truly is a pleasure to meet you, Elizabeth. Unfortunately, you seem far more well-acquainted with me than I do of you and I fear I'm somewhat at a loss of discovering you here." He chuckled a bit and blew some of his bangs out of his eyes. "I hadn't realized Ambroise had found a spot to settle and call his own, much less with a lovely companion." He didn't want to settle on the term mate, just in case she was just a guest. Surely . . . .surely this had to be some sort of joke!
Ambroise!? Such a lovely mare with his stony-faced and exceedingly dull brother? No. It couldn't be. Surely she couldn't have been swept up by his charm (or lack thereof). The spirits were just jesting. He wouldn't assume anything for the moment, though he desperately wanted to ask. Dipping his head apologetically, he added, "I do hope you may forgive my blatant trespassing, though I am perfectly harmless. Regardless what Ambroise says of me, I am the charming one..." He gave her a good natured wink, his amusement and good nature very obvious.

Possessing a somewhat serious nature herself and being mated to a stallion who few would accuse of being mirthful, Elizabeth had had very little exposure to the playful, teasing ways that seemed to be par for the course amidst the rest of his family. Oh sure, she had seen Fenghuang on several occasions, but that delightful rapscallion always at least tried to act his best around her; and true, her mother-in-law was a little...exuberant most of the time (especially when she had learned that she was going to have more grandchildren!), but Elizabeth had a long way to go before she would be able to inherently understand their humor, or catch all of the things that they didn't say.
Consequently, while she noticed Althalus' pause, she chalked it up to either surprise at meeting her or disappointment that he wouldn't be able to catch his brother; shock and disbelief that she was at all attached to said brother never entered her mind as a possibility! Rather, she took him at his word and smiled. "Well, it is a pleasure to meet you at last, Althalus; I've heard a lot about your family, but have yet to meet the majority of Ambroise's siblings or their families. I suppose that this is for the best, though; a little less daunting for one in my position!" This statement was accompanied by a slightly self-deprecating smile, accompanied by a modest flush at his compliments. A naturally modest mare, it was still very hard for her to take personal praise; tough when one's in-laws were such outrageous flatterers!
"You are very kind, Althalus, but I am nothing out of the ordinary. Remarkably ordinary, in fact, but it seems to suit me. And you needn't worry; I have heard that you, for all of your dramatic ways, are non-threatening, so I'll hold you to that and trust your word. Although I should warn you, my lifemate has assured me that he will personally see to any corrective actions if you prove to need them." This comment was accompanied by a slightly more cheeky grin than what she usually bore, but it had been amusing to hear staid Ambroise make such a promise; and having seen him with Fenghuang, she believed he would do it, too! "But I am sure that there will be no need for any such things; indeed, I do hope that you'll be able to catch him before you go! I believe he was going to be with Sylph today, if memory serves, and that means he may be back before dark sets in."
Elizabeth tried to be at least aware of what Ambroise was up to each day; that way, should an emergency arise, she had a general idea of where to find him. On top of that, it was just comforting to know where he could be found, even while she reveled in her solitude. But oh dear, now she was rambling! Flushing again, she gave Althalus an apologetic smile. "Forgive me for rambling; I am very good at chattering these days. But yes, Ambroise and I have been living here for several months now; the upper slopes are a bit too much for me, being from the lowlands, so this is now home. I can show you around, if you'd like; or would you like anything to eat?" Pregnant or not, Elizabeth was full of manners, and rule number one of manners was that guests needed to be treated with hospitality.
It was just as well that she'd misunderstood one of Althalus' statements: his surprise she took to be at the fact that Ambroise had relocated, NOT that he was mated. Looks like there were a few clarifications yet to be made!

Althalus must have eaten some mildewed leaves, or had drank some bad water. Surely he was hallucinating, or perhaps he had taken a stumble and hit his head? Was this really happening? While he was absolutely and utterly delighted to meet Ambroise's mate, he just couldn't help but struggle to accept the concept. Here was a most beautiful unicorn mare, and fully pregnant, all up in cahoots with his brother! How had he missed such rumors!? Oh Amby. . . he was certainly in for an earful as soon as he discovered him!
It wasn't that Althalus thought poorly of either his sibling or Elizabeth. But he was a natural prankster when around his siblings and, quite frankly, had always teased his rainbow-winged brother about the ladies. Althalus had never any trouble admiring the females of the world, and harbored a great respect and delight in their company. But while he had inherited a silver tongue and a good-natured charm, his brother had not. He was so stuck on his responsibilities Althalus doubted he'd ever find himself with a woman. For who could fall passionately in love with Ambroise? Perhaps more importantly, who could charm him enough to truly allow such a duty? Marriage wasn't something Althalus could ever see Ambroise taking lightly but here stood his living, breathing proof.
Even more surprising was her belly! Children! Oh, this day was getting richer by the moment.
While Althalus wanted to tease his brother mercilessly, he had enough respect for his mate to keep his surprise and impertinence to himself. No, he'd give his brother a rough time out of his mates ears. He truly had outdone himself, after all, and Al was absolutely delighted to happen upon this knowledge. To think he'd be an uncle!
Quirking a brow at her comments, the silver eyed stallion gave a laugh. "Well, I have a history of being a horrid rake, or so my brother would have you believe." He gave a small snort, dismissing the title swiftly. He had never seduced any sort of female, even if some had misconstrued his compliments as some sort of passionate confession. His heart had been Nivriti's from day one. "But I also know he would defend all the honor of these hills, even if he had to against family. He's a great stallion, and I know first hand he would personally see to my rehabilitation should I somehow offend. But," he added cheerfully, "I like to think myself as a gentleman, and have quite the practice. As for being ordinary, m'lady, you are quite mistaken when it comes to your great beauty. There is no such thing as just an ordinary mare, after all." And that was something Althalus had always believed. Every mare harbored a great beauty, whether they were aware of it or not. And that was a sentiment he wouldn't dismiss so swiftly.
"Today seems to be a day of surprises, m'lady." Chuckling, he gave a small cant of his head and sheepisly admitted, "I must admit and be perfectly honest - I was oblivious to my brothers relationship status so I truly hope you can forgive my surprise. It is a great pleasure to meet you though, Ms. Elizabeth, and might I welcome you to the family? I know it's a bit belated, but unfortunately I must have been away from the peaks longer than I'd thought. I do hope you realize I would have my appearance much sooner had I only known." He hoped she didn't think poorly of him and his behavior! Had he found out, he would have been one of the first to meet his new sister-in-law and congratulate her on the match.
Oh well. There was no turning back time and, thankfully, he was getting an opportunity to meet her now. That was what was important. Though he had to wonder if anyone would have let him know, especially with her obvious pregnancy. This was one of the best kept secrets in the family (no doubt because of Ambroise) but as his brother he would have liked to have known.
Ears pricking at her hospitality, he gave a chuckle. "A tour would be lovely, if you feel you are up for it. I see this home shall soon hear the pitter-patter of foal hooves, and must express my joy at this knowledge. Though, with my own Nivriti having given birth awhile back, I understand how even a simple tour or company can be unwanted. Please, if I've overstepped my surprise welcome or you've grown weary of my company, by all means, I can always return later." He didn't think Elizabeth was incapable, hardly! She seemed very well and was a delight to get to know. But he also didn't want her to feel obligated to play hostess, especially since she hadn't expected it!

Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear, she'd gone and put her hoof into it now. All this time, she'd gone and thought that Ambroise's family was all aware of her and knew about her relationship with their brother, thought that there was nothing to be modest or secretive about when it came to the family, and the second one of his siblings that she met turned out to have no idea that she'd so much as existed. And she'd met him while pregnant! Immediately upon making that realization, Elizabeth flushed, her pale coat becoming almost as dark as Althalus' own while she struggled to regain her composure in this extraordinary situation.
It was rather silly, she realized, to worry about the propriety of meeting an in-law while pregnant. After all, it wasn't like she could hide her abdomen or the other physical manifestations of pregnancy. Nor, she thought firmly, would she really want to; she was delighted to be pregnant, and very proud of her unborn offspring. It was just not quite the way that she had envisioned coming to the notice of anyone, especially not one her brothers-in-law!
But after a few moments of blushing, her legendary composure was back in place and she was returning to her normal color, shaking off the last dregs of her discomfort with a self-deprecating laugh. "Oh my goodness, I suppose that I should go back to the beginning then and explain myself properly, shouldn't I? I do hope you'll forgive me, Althalus, I fear that my wits and more addled than my innards these days, and with the way these little ones kick, that is saying something!" It was no extreme witticism, to be sure, but a sign of how much she was progressing in her acclimation to the family in that she was even attempting a joke at this point! "Please, call me Elizabeth; I would prefer there to be no formality among family; and I am Ambroise's lifemate. I wish that you would have been able to hear it from him instead, as it is the sort of news that really ought to come from a blood relative themself, but here we are."
Here they were indeed, and she was feeling much better, now that the proper introduction was out of the way. And all things considered, Althalus was being the perfect gentleman, nothing at all like the scamp she'd been warned about. Although she HAD met Fenghuang, so it was unlikely any other siblings would be able to shock her at this point. Well, aside of Adarna, but impishness and wildness were totally different things!
She appreciated his consideration though, and acknowledged it even as she shook it off. "You are very kind, but it would be my pleasure to show you around a little. I'm not so far gone that I can't be on my feet, and I've been told that staying active is beneficial at this stage, so you can help motivate me!" This was said with another laugh, and she turned back in the direction from which she'd come with a slight nod to her brother-in-law. "This way, please; we also have some foodstuffs available, if you're at all hungry from your trip."

Althalus still couldn't believe that he would so soon be an uncle! Furthermore, he could hardly believe that his brother, Ambroise, of all the soquili in the herd had finally gotten himself lifemated. It truly was a miracle. Had their mother made a deal with the spirits? Surely there was no other way . . . Given, his newfound sister-in-law proved to be quite good company, and she was beautiful! But truly now . . . . Ambroise? Of all the stallions she became lifemated with AMBS!?
Oh ho. What a delightful day! Surely this sort of news called for some sort of celebration. To discover his brother was not just married but a father-to-be. . . surely . . . someone had to spread the news! Why hadn't any of them been informed? He hadn't been so smitten with Nivriti to miss such excitement, had he? This really was just too rich for the sunset male, and he couldn't help but beam up at Elizabeth.
"There is absolutely nothing to forgive, Elizabeth. Considering this news pertains to Ambroise, I'm not entirely surprised that word has been slow to move." Part of Althalus was almost certain that those beings who DID discover and learn of such truths were too busy checking and rechecking their sources to make sure it wasn't some great fabrication. No mare (as far as Althalus understood and liked to tease) had ever taken much interest in his rainbow sibling. "Then again, the blame may very wall fall on me - I've been a bit smitten with my own lifemate as of recently, and am afraid my time spent with her may have caused me to miss all this new excitement. Truly though, it is a great pleasure to meet you and I'm most fortunate to have crossed paths with you this afternoon!"
Stealing a glance around at the area, he could indeed see why his brother and Elizabeth might have chosen the area. He was familiar with the river, but hadn't exactly paid much heed to the surrounding area. Since this was his brothers new home-turf, he was quite curious to see. At least he knew where to find Ambroise next time, instead of running all around the hills in search. "I appreciate the offer but am quite well for the moment. The river slacked my earlier thirst, and I promise to be the most attentive of guests." Picking his way closer to the mare, he gave her another bright smile before dipping his head. "Next time, I promise the circumstances for either of us won't be quite as surprising."

It was just as well that Althalus was keeping his thoughts about the absurdity of her marital situation was to himself, because had she known, Elizabeth would have once again been in the awkward situation of having to determine if he was joking or not and defend both her mate, his character, and their situation. While she could appreciate and respect the bonds of family that allowed siblings to tease and joke with one another, it would take her a great deal longer to allow any levity that cast a slight on her mate. She had spent enough time around her mother-in-law to know that it was a bit of a running joke how serious Ambroise could be, but could not allow herself that he was anything lesser for it. Indeed, as far as she was concerned Ambroise temperament was perfect; he was straight-forward and understandable, rational and reasonable. What mare wouldn't be thrilled with having a lifemate so dependable?
Fortunately, she was able to remain in the dark about Alth's more devious musings, and she was able instead to accept the praise and his very courteous excuses instead. "Well, I am sure that your lifemate appreciates the dedication, and even amongst family we can't always all be aware of everyone's business. I must confess myself that my knowledge of the family at this time extends little father than Ambroise's siblings themselves; I can't even claim the pleasure of knowing your mate's name, but I am sure that she and it are lovely and would enjoy the chance to meet her at a later date."
She said all of this as she lead Althalus along the barely worn path back from the river to the rocky outcropping that housed their home, known to the less discerning as a cave in a meadow on the lower slopes. "There's not a great deal to see right now, with how early in the year it is, but Ambroise has told me that there are a great deal of flowers in this area later in the year, which I look forward to seeing!"

Althalus loved his brother, truly he did! But unfortunately, he wasn't anything at all like Ambroise. Oh, one could easily discern that they were siblings, at least physically, but their personalities were as different as night and day! Ambs had always been serious and dedicated to his tasks, especially being named heir of the herd. But Althalus had always been carefree and outgoing, and did his best to get his brother to loosen up.
Unfortunately, his teasing and provocation hadn't done much. Ambroise had always been stalwert and true, dedicated to his family and the herd, and hadn't time for games. While Althalus trusted his brother and deeply respected him, he just couldn't accept that life was all work and no play. It was where he would always differ from Ambroise, and therefor, was something he'd always give him a hard time about.
But that was between brothers. Thankfully, Althalus wasn't a complete blockhead, and did have something called tact. He wouldn't voice his teasing remarks to Elizabeth, and was going to do his best to be a good guest! Besides, he didn't want to alienate Elizabeth upon the very first meeting, or at all! He had manners, and he always did his best to treat a lady with the utmost respect and admiration. The fair unicorn before him deserved that much, and was nothing but pleasant! Ambroise had found himself an impeccable mate, and Althalus approved (not that it mattered). She certainly seemed to have a good head on her shoulders, and could obviously handle his moody brother.
"Well, I am glad to have been granted the opportunity to meet you, m'lady Elizabeth," Althalus nodded with another grin. He couldn't help himself - old habits died hard and he often still spoke such formal greetings even to Niviriti! A lady was a lady, after all, and they certainly deserved suck acknowledgment! "Our family is large, so it isn't surprising that you haven't had the opportunity to meet more. But give it time, especially with new additions on the way!" Poor Elizabeth was going to miss having her home to herself, especially with the pitter-patter of little hooves echoing the land. Yei wouldn't pass up the opportunity to lavish them with attention, and of course all of the family would want to meet them!
"Ah, but I shall have to bring my beloved Nivriti this way to properly introduce you. She will be delighted to meet a new face, that I am sure of, as her own family is far from these lands. And to meet another mother, one that isn't restricted to her mother-in-law, would be quite refreshing for her." He meant no slight to Yei, but she could be a bit of a handful and overwhelming. With Nivriti's quiet nature, it appeared that perhaps Elizabeth would be a much more welcome friend.
Picking his way after the mare, he paused to admire the land that Ambroise and she had chosen to call their own. A great lover of beauty and aesthetics, he could already see the potential that their home offered. It would be a lovely place to raise a family, with the green grasses and flowers cropping up with the arrival of spring and summer. And of course, to be surrounded by the hills and woods, they would be granted a lovely view of the changing of the leaves, and protection from the snows. "A lovely place, certainly, and a perfect place to raise a family. Ambroise is correct - the flowers that bloom during the warmer months can be overwhelming with beauty and color. It is truly a gorgeous abode you've chosen." He would know - he had run the foothills and mountains for years and was quite familiar with the changes the seasons would bring.

For her part, Elizabeth was quite pleased with Althalus thus far. Reputation aside, he was proving to be a very pleasant, well-mannered companion; his surprise he was very well entitled to, given the circumstances, and Elizabeth was rather pleasantly surprised at how well he was taking the news. Some days, she still didn't believe herself what was going on and would have to waddle down to the stream to view her pregnant form to accept that yes, this was the way things now were. It was a very contenting realization, she had to admit!
Having already once corrected his 'm'lady', she let the next pass without comment; after all, if he was the formal type, then who was she to argue with him? In a world where manners often seemed to take a backseat, it was nice to be around someone who took them seriously. He didn't seem to be using the title in a distant style, so there was hardly anything at which to take offense! Instead, she smiled and accepted what he was saying with a nod; she could definitely agree that it was a sizable family! "It certainly is a large and boisterous group, but so far I've been making good progress in at least learning everyone's names. Ambroise has been the model of good breeding in that respect, though I insist that he not allow me to distract him from his duties. I know how much he had to occupy his time, I would be very unhappy to get in the way of anything important."
She and Ambroise had made an agreement shortly upon becoming mates that they would BOTH offer opinions on the things that affected them jointly, and while she had been making good progress (well, comparatively good progress), she was still highly deferential and hated the thought of anyone putting themselves out for her, even her mate! In fact, one might say especially her mate, if they were being accurate!
But she was very pleased at the prospect of getting to know another sister-in-law, especially one in a similar situation as herself (married into the family, as it were), and so her smile was bright and her response quick at his comment about meeting his mate. "That would be lovely; so far I haven't met many of the other females in the family, just my mother-in-law herself. And as a first time mother myself, it would certainly be a pleasure to be able to glean information from another."

Thankfully for Elizabeth, Althalus had always been a rather laid back individual. While life often threw surprises his way, he had long mastered the art of calm and an ability to roll with the punches. He very rarely lost his cool, and as such, had already settled upon the idea that Elizabeth was his sister-in-law! While they may not have known one another long, the idea was already firmly patented in mind.
"Ambroise has always been dutiful and certainly takes his position in the herd seriously," Althalus mused, his silver eyes full of good humor. In a way they were night and day . . . . how often had he managed to stir up trouble due and how often had Ambroise had to clean it up? He never intended to get in to trouble, but it always seemed to happen. While Ambroise buried himself in his work and lifestyle, Althalus was only too happy to enjoy life and the pleasures it granted. "Though I'm certain Amby appreciates such accommodations. It sounds to me that he's one lucky stallion to have met such a mare." In fact, Althalus couldn't have planned it better himself, and he sorely wished he might have had a hoof in the set up! How many mares had he met? And how many more had he considered pushing his brothers way?
Either way, the fact Elizabeth had managed to get his winged sibling to propose and to form a match was still amazing. He'd have to seek out his mother immediately and get all the news and whatever details she had managed to hear. The spirits were mighty coy creatures, but it was apparent they knew damn well what they were doing!
"Nivriti would love the company, I'm sure. Since our own foals have left the figurative nest, the poor lady has been stuck with solely with me! And as handsome as I am, I'm quite sure even I'd grow sick of the repetitiveness." His silver eyes were bright with good humor and mischief, though the affection that laced his words as he spoke of Nivriti were obvious. It was a good thing Nivriti was away, lest Elizabeth be overwhelmed by the sappiness of the pair!
"So, m'lady, might I inquire of your origins? Have you lived near the herd or is the area new to you?" He didn't want to demand to know all the details, like where she met Ambroise, and how did the subject of a proposal even come up, but . . .he was ridiculously curious to know. Thankfully, inquiring about her history and life was as good a way to start getting to know more about her.
