The day Delia Colt spotted Ainsley walking around the neighborhood she was overjoyed. There weren’t that many children around her son’s age in the Downtown area; local playmates were often hard to come by. It was the one thing she didn’t like about the neighborhood; there were more old couples than young ones. The Colts bought their brownstone from Delia’s parents when they moved to a milder climate; it made fiscal sense at the time. But, the lack of many other young children made her regret the purchase sometimes. Their home was beautiful and more than comfortable for their small family, but she often felt Samson was missing out.

Ainsley was a rare find, even better that she attended the same school as Samson. Mrs. Colt spent some time phoning around to find out more about the girl: who she was, what grade she was in, and who to contact to set up a potential meeting. She had a few connections at school, it didn’t take long before she was on the phone with Bell McMahon.

As it turned out, the Colts lived not too far from the McMahon’s, just a few streets over and two blocks up. Mrs. Colt couldn’t get over the idea of such a young, pretty girl walking to and from school by herself. Not that the area was dangerous, but she felt that it would be best, for both kids, if Samson escorted Ainsley. Mrs. Colt was more than willing to drive them both, but her own hectic work schedule often prevented that. It was a shame that they weren’t the same age or in the same grade, but it would do. Delia was just glad that there at least one child nearby.

On Monday morning, Mrs. Colt arranged for Samson to meet Ainsley at the McMahon’s and walk with her to Knightside Elementary. Her silver Jetta pulled up to the old fashioned house. Before letting Samson out of the car, his mother ran a comb through his dark grey-blue hair. Licking the tips of her fingers, she rubbed a miscellaneous smudge off his cheek. When he looked his best, Mrs. Colt gave him a quick kiss on the head before he scooted out the door. Then she was off, the silver car disappeared as it drove down the street.

Sam walked up towards the McMahon’s door, grumbling to himself. This was not how he had wanted to start his day. He would have liked to sleep in a bit and bike to school. Walking meant getting up earlier and who knew what this girl was like. A girl, pfft. Who wanted to walk with a girl? Sam kicked up a stray pebble as he approached the door. After ringing the bell, he shoved his hands into the pockets of his navy blue coat. His twisted his foot on the spot while he waited.

In the time Bell and Ainsley did see each other, the older McMahon did not forget to tell her she had been scheduled off to meet and walk to school with a boy from the neighbourhood. She didn't know much about him. She knew that he went to the same school as her and that he was older but she did not know how much older. There was a limit on how much older he could be though if he went to her school. Either way, her interest had been peeked. In the time she lived here, she had never met another child. It was probably the area, but the child was basically secluded here with no kids her age to play with. Not that it was any different from where she grew up but to know there was another child in the area put a grin on the child's face as she got ready for school this particular day.

She had gone down stairs first, and found herself some breakfast and then after she had eaten it she went back upstairs to first brush her teeth, and then wash her face. After that she went back to her bedroom where she had sung a song while she got dressed, which wasn't unusual, but the choice of song she was singing was. It wasn't a solitary lullaby but more of a happy, wake me up for the day, sort of song. She didn't have the choice of what to wear given the school had uniforms but she still enjoyed getting dressed, especially putting on her socks. She didn't dare try and put them on while standing up and for the first time in the morning she sat down on one of the chairs underneath her bunk bed and with one foot at a time she slipped her socks on.

She had to make a good impression on her new friend when he got here and for that she had to look very presentable! Next she had to do her hair, and while still on the chair under the top bunk of the bed she reached over for her ribbons and brush, carefully stroking the brush through her hair until the silky threads were free of any tangles before she carefully braided each side, tying bows at the top and bottom. After she was done she smiled, glancing over at Octavian Oswald. Even Octavian Oswald had to look presentable and today as she reached over and grabbed him, she gave her a new bow: a teal one to match her own. Oh, how fetching he looked.

Carefully, with him in her arms, she got off the chair and went over to a mirror. Perfect! The child smiled, grabbed her backpack and headed downstairs. He should be here soon, right? Ainsley wanted to be right at the door when he knocked! She didn't want to make him wait, no no no. That wouldn't be very polite at all. She wanted to be ready too, so the child headed over to the hallway by the door. She set her backpack down first, and then Octavian Oswald on top of it, before she sat down on the clean floor and began to slip her shoes on before buckling each side down. She stood up, and one at a time tapped down the toes of each shoe before she put on her coat. It was getting warmer so she didn't need her scarf anymore.

Grabbing her backpack and Octavian Oswald in either arms, the child slipped the bag onto her back awhile she carefully rotated which hand held the bunny plush while she put the straps over each shoulder. One more check to make sure she looked presentable, a couple adjustments to the hair hanging on either side of her face and a few tugs on Octavian Oswald's bow and she was ready. Ready to wait. And wait. She was anxious, and standing with her hand on the door knob ready to pull it open any second. Any minute. What time was he supposed to get here? The child didn't have a watch, and she didn't want to leave the door to check.

She waited, and finally... the door bell rang! Carefully, the child opened the door and she peeked out first through the small crack she allowed open. There was a boy! Seeing this, she opened the door all the way and with a small smile she said, "Hello, my name is Ainsley," and upon letting go of the door knob she held out her plush bunny with both hands. "This is Octavian Oswald."

She carefully pulled him back to her side, and she looked at the boy. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

Sam heard the click in the door and immediately titled his head to watch it open. His brown-sugar colored eyes scanned over the girl as she came out into view. Her uniform was the same as his, she had the same bright teal shoes he did and hair bows to match. So far, so good. Ainsley seemed to be normal enough. She couldn't have been that much younger than him. Samson was thankful she wasn't a mutant, or obviously uncool. God forbid if he had to walk with a weirdo.

"Ainsley," he repeated. Taking his hands out of his pockets, he pointed towards himself, "Sam." He gave her a weak, sleepy smile. It was too early in the day to care about giving a proper introduction.

The smile turned into a light smirk at the stuffed animal's introduction. "Octavian Oswald, huh? Kinda a weird name for a rabbit." The boy stifled a giggle, trying to be polite. "Nice to meet you both."

"Oh..." Sam reached around to his black backpack, giving it some slack and pulling it down on his arm. One hand held the bag steady, the other unzipped it to root around. Gingerly, he pulled out a small white cardboard box with robin egg blue ribbon tied around it. The ribbon had the word 'Delish', the name of Mrs. Colt's eatery and catering service, printed on it. The box had Mrs. Colt's handwriting on it: Hello McMahons! Inside the box were freshly baked mini muffins of various flavors. It smelled like sugary heaven.

Sam held the box out to Ainsley. "Mom wanted you guys to have this."

Ainsley was surprised when she finally got a good look at Samson, her eyes studying him carefully. His hair was short, dark and curly while hers was long, light and straight; his skin seemed sun kissed, darker than her pale complexion; and he was taller than her, so much that she had to look up at him to look into his face. He must be older, but the child couldn't imagine how much older he was than her. He couldn't be too old though, he was in the same uniform as her.

"Sam," Ainsley repeated. It shouldn't be hard to remember his name, it wasn't even two syllables after all.

She smiled at him, watching as he pulled out a box and gave it to her. It had her last name on it and the accepted the gift from Samson as he held it out to her, thanking him immediately before she excused herself for a moment to go set the box inside for her sister. She decided to put it on the kitchen table, and after a few moments the child could be heard coming back with the light tap on the hallway floor.

She stepped out of the house, and softly closed the door behind her as she looked to Samson.

"Shall we?" She asked with a small smile, stepping off the porch and onto the sidewalk.

“Ready when you are.” Sam adjusted his bag, making sure it was secure on his shoulders. Moving into a parallel position to Ainsley, he started to walk down the street. Each step was light, but having longer legs, Sam took wider steps than the girl. He had to consciously slow himself down, to make sure he didn’t walk too far ahead of her.

At first, Sam didn’t say anything. He was content to walk in silence; it was almost like walking alone. But, in the back of his mind was his mother’s nagging voice. She had lectured Sam the previous night about this. She told to him to make an effort and be nice.

Glancing to his side, Sam watched Ainsley closely. She looked almost exactly like a doll with her hair tied up in bows and her porcelain skin. He had to admit to himself that she looked pretty, though maybe too pristine. They were certainly opposites in appearance. Sam’s coat was slightly stained with patches of dirt and mud. His slacks were clean and pressed, but only because it was still too early in the day. His shoes were lightly scuffed, whereas Ainsley’s shoes looked perfectly polished.

‘Definitely like a doll’, he thought and wondered if anyone played with her. Did she ever get dirty and play in the mud like he did? Be nice, he reminded himself. After a minute of walking in silence, Sam finally spoke up.

“Who's you’re teacher? I have Mrs. Bancroft, in 5th.”

Ainsley didn't have a problem with walking to school in silence, using the quiet time to carefully observe the area along the way. The trees were beginning to bloom their leaves allowing for nicely shaded areas for when the days got hot, and flowers had begun to sprout their new life outside of the ground. They were so pretty, and Ainsley couldn't help but admire them while they walked. There were so many different kinds and so many different colours that brightened the walk to school. It was a nice neighbourhood, and many other houses had gardens. The child hoped that perhaps her sister would let her plant some flowers at home that she could tend to and watch grow. They would be so pretty.

This had been the child's thoughts most of the way, innocent and admiring the beauty of the world. The thought that Sam had been looking at her didn't occur to her in the least and when he spoke, she had been rather surprised as she was quickly pulled out of her world. It had been a moment she forgot that he was two grades ahead of her. She didn't know much about the fifth grade. Did they learn more vocabulary there? She loved vocabulary.

"Mr. Whitesmith, in 3rd," she replied, her face turning to greet his. "What is the fifth grade like?"

“Whitesmith huh? I had him. He’s okay, I guess. Fifth is a lot better, we do fun stuff. Mrs. Bancroft is really nice. We’re learning about Ancient Greece right now. And about the environment in Science class.” Sam was trying hard not to be harsh on the third grade. He had to fight the temptation to call their subjects baby subjects. The boy was in the fifth grade after-all, the third grade in comparison seemed so lame.

As the kept walking, Sam was struggling to find things to say about the fifth grade. He was never much of a conversationalist. When they stopped at a street corner, Sam went to press the button for the lights. He pressed it hard repeatedly, as tried to carry on talking as he did so. “Depends on the classes you like. English is kind of boring. I like Science much better; we’re working on dioramas and models of the earth. Whatcha doing in Whitesmith’s class?”

Ainsley listened intently to Sam as he told her all about they were doing in the fifth grade. It sounded so much nicer than what Mr. Whitesmith had them doing, especially in math. It wasn't that she was bad at it, but they were beginning the multiplication tables and they worried her. There were so many in the table, she could only dream to remember them all!

"That sounds wonderful, although I'm not sure what Ancient Greece is! Is it a kind of math problem? I hope it isn't too hard to solve. We're doing multiplication tables now in math and I'm worried I won't be able to remember them all. He assigns a lot of vocabulary assignments though, I really like that. I can't wait to get to the fifth grade though." And sixth grade, and seventh, and eighth. May as well just skip fourth. She needed to grow up faster!

“ Not a math problem. Ancient Greece is like regular Greece, it’s a country only it’s really really old and far away. They invented Democracy, or something.” Sam nodded his head like this all made perfect sense. The pair kept walking together. The lights of the cross walk had flashed and they safely crossed. Sam kept a look out for cars at each intersection, making sure to check before crossing.

“I like math! It’s easy once you figure it out. If you get stuck you just have to remember how to add.” When the two children approached the school Sam walked Ainsley through the front door. In the large foyer Sam moved to go down the hallway where his class was. Before he did that, he looked back to smile at Ainsley. “Meet you here after school kay? I’ll walk you home.”

Then Sam disappeared, dashing off down the hall and around a corner.

Ainsley wasn't entirely sure what regular Greece was, let alone an old version of it but regardless of that she nodded her head, trying to take in the information to store it for a later date. Who knew, maybe Mr. Whitesmith would suddenly ask them what Ancient Greece was, and then she'd not the answer! It sort of sounded interesting though, and the child made a mental note to check the library on books about it later.

Before she knew it, they had gotten to the school. Had the walk always been so short? It seemed to have passed much quicker than usual! Was it because she was walking with another person for the first time that she completely lost track of everything? She had been basically just following after the boy, barely looking around to see where she was.

"Okay," she agreed, waving the older boy off as he dashed down the hall before she went down the opposite direction towards the third grade classroom. Maybe math wouldn't be as bad today if she remembered what Sam had said to her about adding. Maybe the day would go by fast so she could ask Sam more about Ancient Greece later too!
