It had been the end, the troops of the P.W.F. had stormed the headquarters and Retrieved the Poke-ball holding the legendary pokemon known as Groudon. Their Acting commander had failed in his duty of retrieving the one he had loved....tortured beyond repair, her grave rests silently, a hole rested in his heart. As for the monster, it had learned of the attack, and retreated into the shadows with his minions, plotting and planning his next move. Many had lost something in what the leaders of the island had dubbed "The Great Betrayal".
Now, 2 years later, life had returned to a peaceful flow, the once war-torn lands have begun a slow healing process. Thick purple smoke still rose from the tainted lands, reduced into putrid swamps, now teeming with the forms of poison pokemon. It was this day that people once again felt safe to go about their lives. Unknowing that on the outskirts of town, something waited.
The man stood, his black suit a stark contrast to his pale skin. His anger written on his face as he contemplated the lives ahead of him. "These...FOOLS, do they not know that they will die? Never to feel, or think....alone in an abyss that none shall return from." With a flick of his hands two pokeballs struck the dirt with sharp thuds. From the light emerged 2 pokemon, a sultry jinx and a new one, beeping its messages with its light up digits. With a nod, The man responds to it with a laugh. "Mufufufufu, of course we can begin my pet, you are so eager to please me....JINX, Start dancing......Nihilo....Spread the message to the young." With a contented sigh, the jinx began to sway, the hypnotic effects bursting from her skin as the other began to send the thoughts outward, into the minds of the civilians. In moments, the people began to dance, their feet carrying them up stairs and into elevators, As they realized where they were heading, some began to cry, some began to pray...all were cut off as they Fell from the rooftops, landing twisted and broken on the ground below.
Looking out over the city, the man began to laugh as the felt the lives fading away, a snarky grin plastered on his face. "MUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFU, Team Nightwalker has returned." With that, he turned, walking briskly into a bush.

Roland stood at the top of a cliff, looking out at the area below. It was a secluded place, he had made sure of that a long time ago. The trees down below had been trampled, uprooted, and some were burned to a crisp. It looked like a warzone, and in a way it was.
This was the place Roland had been secretly training Groudon almost every day for two years.
Roland looked down at his belt, from which hung seven pokeballs. Grabbing one premier ball that looked a little bigger than the others, he inspected it closely, and memories flooded his senses once again. So much had happened back then. After closing his eyes for a couple seconds to think back on everything, he shook his head and opened his eyes again. He then hurled the pokeball off the cliff, and grinned fiercely as the legendary pokemon Groudon towered before him.
A lot had happened in the time that had passed. A whole new region had been discovered, along with new pokemon. Of course, Roland had got some. With a smirk, he released the other six pokemon from their pokeballs: Arcane, his trusted companion that had been with him from the beginning of his journey. Chandelure, the ghostly chandelier was also present. Braviary, the eagle pokemon, flew above. Infernape stood by, clenching his fists, ready for a good fight. Charizard spread his wings and hurled a flamethrower attack into the sky. Bisharp stood by, sharpening all of his sharp edges with a whetstone he always carried.
Roland crossed his arms across his chest and looked at all of the pokemon he had just released. "Give him hell, guys." With that, he turned to Groudon and snapped "Take them out!"
With that order, the pokemon all snapped into action. He watched as Arcane took off like a Rapidash out of a race gate and jumped down the cliff in one swift motion. Looking up, Roland saw Braviary dive bomb the towering beast with Brave Bird. Charizard was circling above, looking for the perfect opportunity to attack while Bisharp sprinted and dove towards Groudon, ready to tackle him and stab him with his pointed body. Chandelure was floating around slowly, looking for a chance to launch a hypnosis attack, or possibly confuse it. Infernape swung around on the few trees that remained standing, speeding around while he looked for his chance. Grinning, Roland said quietly to himself "This is going to be a spectacular battle."
Roland watched as all of his pokemon fell before the massive pokemon. After recalling them all, he said "Great job, guys. You did well" before turning to Groudon. "You're ready," he said, and then recalled the beast into his pokeball and walked off to take his injured pokemon to a pokecenter.
Upon arriving to the town he called his home, Roland was greeted with silence. His gym, the tallest building in the town, had the most bodies littering the base.
Death was no new thing to Roland, he had seen it before. He was a hardened man. He was not hardened enough for this. Not knowing what else to do, he ran to the empty pokecenter and jumped over the counter. After quickly healing his own pokemon, he released Arcane and simply said "Find Toph." The Arcanine nodded and took off lightning fast with his Extreme Speed.
Once the pokemon was gone, Roland began searching for survivors, his dismay growing as he found not a single living soul in the whole town.

Raiu stood by the ocean with his eyes closed. He took in a short breath and felt the breeze on his face. He wasn't too far away from town. Close enough to hear screaming. Raiu picked up a PokeBall off his belt and threw it up in the air and out came his favorite partner, Luxray.
"What's going on out there? You see anything?"
Raiu had greatly matured since the war two years ago. He has returned from a quest to find stronger Pokemon to be a useful warrior, and he has returned with a powerful arsenal. His Pokemon were perfectly suited to infiltrate any building, and that's just what he did with his fellow fighters of the war. They had retrieved the legendary Groudon.
Raiu turned back to Luxray. Luxray seemed... shaken about something. He hoped this didn't mean anything back.
"Well? What do you see?"
A second later, Luxray shot a very powerful shock wave at Raiu. This is how Luxray communicate among each other, and Raiu has learned to read these waves. Raiu interpreted and his face quickly dropped. This couldn't be. Was it all starting over? Was he going to be seperated from the ones he loved again?
Raiu withdrew Luxray and tossed out a new Pokemon: Zebstrika, dubbed Zeburaika. He hopped on to the Electric zebra's back.
"Quick, get us to town!"
When Raiu returned, he hoped that Luxray was exaggerating. To the contrary, Luxray toned it down. Everywhere he saw, there was a dead body. People splattered on the pavement, dead, cold, lifeless. It was appalling. Raiu switched out Zeburaika for another new Pokemon, a close favorite of his: Zoroark.
"Zoroark, create an illusion around us to mask our presence."
And with that, Raiu and the dark fox disappeared to survey the broken surroundings.

They believed she'd had a change of heart. They thought they knew her, knew what she was like. "She's good again," they said as the organization she belonged to came crumbling down in that one attack. There was no doubt in their minds that she was on their side because now she held a higher position with them than she did during the war.
The young woman brushed her long white hair from her face and smirked as she gazed out at the swampland before her, taking in the disasterous sight with a feeling of pride in her heart. They had all thought wrong. In fact, the fall of the Nightwalkers had created a black hole within her, sucking away at everything that had once made her feel attracted to the good guys. She was now a shell of the girl she had once been.
The loss of her best friend had hit the woman hard. That was the start of the change, losing Riri. She had been by her side throughout the whole thing, and now that she was gone... Rain lived for no one other than her master. She wanted his dream to be fulfilled, and she would stop at nothing to make sure it was.
Her hand went instinctively to the silver heart that hung delicately around her neck and she sighed heavily, realizing that she was lying to herself. There was one other person she cared deeply about, but of course, he happened to be on the other side. She had fallen so quickly for him after the war had ended. He was her only weakness, her Achilles' heel, and she feared that one day a certain ghostly someone would become aware of this and use her against him, as he had done with her best friend. She couldn’t bear the thought of him being harmed....
Shaking her head violently to clear it of those weak thoughts, she growled to no one and crossed her arms. The time had come. No one believed she had what it took to be truly evil... to become a feared member of Team Nightwalker. She turned to the Scolipede beside her and gently stroked his head, smiling bitterly to herself as she imagined what their reactions would be when they discovered her true loyalties.
The PWF was in for a rude awakening.

Topher Skelver, sat silently staring out to the ocean. Reflecting upon the events 2 years ago. It still haunted him to this day. Rishiki, had died before he reached her. And it was all because of Verin.
When they had left the base, after the victorious attack, the young man was an emotional wreck. He wouldn't have made it back to the light of day if not for Rain. She had found him, and guided him out. He certainly wasn't capable of getting out on his own. After he had calmed only enough to gather his thoughts, he gave Rain a necklace he had brought along for Rishi, telling her that it was a thanks for taking care of Rishi when he wasn't around.
Toph found himself crying to Rain often, she knew Rishi better than most everyone else he could talk to. And over time the two became close friends, a result of all their long talks. Eventually reaching a point where they saw each other daily, and conversation was usually more pleasant than it had been. He had noticed she always wore the necklace he had gave her on that day, and it somehow made him feel happy and at peace over the tragedy. As the months passed he soon found himself thinking about Rain more and more, eventually realizing he might have feelings for her. After building up the courage, he finally decided to reveal this to her. To his pleasant surprise, she felt the same way.
Now, so much time later. He was happy. He was in love again, things were peaceful. He had improved as a trainer as well, they all had. With the exception of the past creeping back into his mind, things seemed as if they couldn't be better. Until, Verin...and the Nightwalkers, crawled from the shadows and struck once again.

After Roland checked the last body for signs of life, he let out an angry, inarticulate yell at the sky. Sure, he was a gym leader. He was most well known for his fiery attitude and his skill at pokemon battles, but the role of Gym Leader did not just entail that. He was the protector of this city, the city of Infernus. That was not the original name of the city, but after Roland came to be the gym leader here, the city itself changed. Adapted. Evolved. All around his gym. He had watched this happen for years.
Not only was Roland the one who was to protect this city, he was also good friends with almost every citizen. The people here knew him, and they knew that his almost constant serious attitude and his fiery temper was only one side of Roland. Just a front. The people here had taken the time to welcome their new gym leader and befriend him. He walked amongst the twisted corpses, remembering. Here was a man who had asked him to be a guest at his daughter's 7th birthday party, and his daughter laid on the ground nearby, now 8 years old. Of course he had gone, and brought several of his pokemon to give the children rides and such. There was his next door neighbor, who occasionally complained about the constant light coming from the gym, since it always shined right in his window. He was always nice about it, though, and after compromise Roland had bought him some heavy drapes to go over the windows. Over there was the school, the teacher's body strewn amongst the many promising young trainers that were under her care. He had failed them all.
There was, however, one last thing he could do for them.
As Roland used every ounce of his will to command his tears not to flow, Roland found a shovel and began the task of digging a grave for each citizen. He only enlisted the help of one pokemon, Bisharp, who he set to the task of chiseling headstones out of any large enough rock he could find.
The climate around Infernus city was not a desert. It was still hot. Roland was sweating profusely after a while, and somewhere along the way he had discarded his vest and undershirt. But he still worked diligently, intent on finishing what he started. Memories of the last assault by the Nightwalkers flooded his memory.
Most prominent in his mind of that incident was Kerri. She had flipped sides a few times, and through all of that, Roland had tried too hard to protect her. After a while, she had revealed that that was the main motive for her switching. She had wanted to prove that she could take care of himself. "Heh," he said aloud at that memory. "Just like a double battle. A team is not simply as strong as one pokemon."
Things would be different this time. Kerri could take care of herself. Sure, he would help her and look out for her, but only when it was needed.
Verin would pay for this. If for nothing else, this random mass killing of innocent people would be his downfall. Roland himself would take care of Verin, if that's what it took.

~~*~~ ~~*~~ Kerrigan had changed over the years. Her knees, always bad, had worsened, and she could barely walk without the use of a cane. She found this both amusing and infinitely confining, and often spent time walking between the cities of the region to try and confront her weakness, and would battle wandering trainers along the way. Over time she became better as a pokemon trainer, though not at a level that she was comfortable enough battling those she knew. Occasionally she would disappear for a couple weeks at a time, with no explanation as to where she'd gone off to. She seemed generally calmer than she'd been two years ago, but there was a strange undercurrent of frustration in her demeanour.
On this lovely spring day, Kerri was wandering with her Beautifly fluttering by her side, muttering softly to the butterfly pokemon. "And I don't know about you, but I would kill for some food right about now. Does that sound good to you? I've planted some nice flowers, so there's plenty of pollen for you..." her words died as she walked closer to the town, and the stench of death wafted over her. "Oh gods..." Kerri walked as quickly as she could into the town, looking over the chaos that had descended the town with dismay. "R-return, Beautifly," she told her pokemon, her voice and hand shaking as the butterfly returned to its pokeball.
"Roland!" the girl called out now, moving about as well as she could, looking at the faces of the fallen with helpless sorrow as she continued towards the fire gym. "Roland Deschain!"

Roland looked up at the sound of his name. "I know that voice."
He did know the voice. He also knew the panic that came with the voice. He quickly jumped up and dashed toward the voice, soon finding his girlfriend, Kerri. "I'm right here, dearest. I'm ok. I wasn't in the city when it happened." As soon as he had reached her, he hugged her tightly and buried his face in her shoulder, giving himself a moment to compose himself without showing it. "I just... found them like this."

~~*~~ ~~*~~ Kerrigan wrapped her arms tightly around Roland, feeling the ice-cold panic that had begun to grip her stomach ease off a bit as he buried his face into her shoulder. Running her fingers through his hair gently, she took a deep breath to settle herself, ignoring the smell of human flesh that was just beginning to rot. She'd grown unfortunately accustomed to the smell over the past couple years, so it wasn't as hard as it could have been.
"Was it Verin?" Kerrigan asked, her voice quavering slightly as her grip on Roland tightened. "Looks like they fell from the rooftops. Mass suicide like this is pretty much unheard of, and these people... weren't one who'd do this. They were murdered." She glanced over the carnage, wincing as she saw an occasional person who must have fallen at an odd angle and survived... for a little while. Their death would have been all the more horrible for being painfully drawn out. "We need to bury them."

Raiu recognized the two familiar voices he heard. They were of Rol and his girlfriend Kerri. He quickly ran over to them, with Zoroark by his side.
"Hey, guys, over here!"
Then he glanced over at Zoroark and remembered that they couldn't see or hear him. He asked Zoroark to release its illusion, and with a flip and a flash of purple, Raiu became visible again. He withdrew Zoroark, and by now, he had gotten Kerri and Rol's attention. He could tell by the startled look on their face caused by his sudden appearance.
"Oi, umm, sorry about that. Zoroark sure is an amazing Pokemon... Now, for the issue regarding the rotting dead corpses lying around... What should we do? It's inevitable that there's going to be more battles this way. And even though we've gotten stronger, there's no doubt that the Nightwalkers grew in strength too."
Raiu was worried that he would have to face the familiar faces who he used to call PWFers. Some of them he faced before. In fact, he was the only one in his family who belonged to the PWF. He really hoped he wouldn't have to face Snappy, Des, his brother, or... Rain.

Roland shook his head "I dunno. I think so, though. I don't know of anything else that could cause this." He looked around, and sighed. "That's what I've been working on."
Suddenly, Raiu appeared, and startled both Roland and Kerri. "Ah, Zoroark. Such an interesting pokemon. I should get one of those... Anyway. All we can do is do our best. We do, however, have something they do not." Roland looked down at his belt at that, then back up. He added "I have a job to do. You two are welcome to help, and I would appreciate it. This was my city, though. It's my burden to bear. So I won't make you if you don't want to."

She didn't let her mind linger on him for very long, because when he would seep in like he always did, she felt weak. She didn't want to have to face him, but she knew that Verin would find out about their relationship (if he didn't already know) and do something to cause hell and tension between the two. *Especially* now that Toph was the leader of the PWF. That made things difficult on both of them.
He had a right to know. From her lips to his ears, this had to come out.
Doesn't mean she was in any hurry to tell him, though.
She continued to smirk out at the swamp before her, enjoying how raunchy the scene was. The death, the stench, the overall toxic air to it... it made the Poison-type master grin like the Joker and caused a sort of "high" to take hold of her. She felt like she was home here.
The screaming in the background made her grin increase in size as she continued stroking her Scolipede's head. "Soon," she said to her partner. "We're going to show them all the truly fearsome side of Poison-types." She kissed its head and turned away from the toxic swamp, leaving it behind her for now as she walked away.

~~*~~ ~~*~~ "Of course I'll help, Roland. You don't even need to ask," Kerri told him, rolling her eyes slightly. She stooped and closed the eyes of a young child she used to play with, and picked up the body gingerly, adjusting it so she could use her cane and carry it at the same time.
"There's several ways we could do this. Bury them individually, which would take a lot of time. Have a mass grave, perhaps. Funeral pyres, either individually or en masse. Roland, you knew these people better than I or Raiu, what would you think would be the best way to honour them? 'How we treat our dead is part of what makes us different than those did the slaughtering. '" she quoted softly. Her eyes trailed to the corpse she held, and she rubbed a small patch of dirt off the girl's cheek. "They deserve that much, at least, before we go gallivanting off to save the day." ***

"A job? What kind of a job?"
Raiu was definitely eager to help out. He's been waiting for a chance to prove to everyone how much stronger he's gotten and this was his chance. Then Kerri raised the question of how they were to properly and respectfully dispose of the bodies.
"Well, we could gather all of the bodies to a remote area, and have a giant cremation. I have a Fire-type move capable Pokemon."
Raiu patted Typhlosion's PokeBall and Zoroark's, who knew Flamethrower. Then Raiu hoped he wasn't being extremely insensitive. He didn't like dealing with death because he simply didn't know how. If he was told someone died, he wouldn't cry or feel mad, he would just silently accept it without any signs of grief. So he doesn't like talking about dead people, of fear he would say the wrong thing.

"A funeral pyre. Didn't even think of that. It'd probably be for the best, actually. We'd need our pokemon's help." With that, Roland released a few pokemon from their pokeballs. Brisingr and Din stood before him, his Infernape and his Charizard. Roland enlisted the help of them to carry the bodies and lay them side by side.
After the chore was done, Roland looked at the pokemon and nodded. With that one wordless command, Roland watched as the bodies were lit by the fire pokemon's flamethrower attack. He silently watched as the bodies were reduced to ashes. Bisharp set to work making a small monument for the area, a mass gravestone of sorts. After it was set up, Roland recalled his pokemon and released his Braviary. With a very serious, deadly tone, he spoke two words to the flying pokemon.
"Find Verin."
