They sold all their prized possessions giving them enough to pay rent but not enough to live on. The stranger told them that they owed him a great debt. They couldn't afford to pay off the debt and was soon in the poor house again. The stranger returned and told them that if they were to give up Justin he would pay off all their debts. They agreed and that was the last they saw of their son. Years later the stranger died, but before he did he sold Justin into slavery.
