Mr.Motos Current Thread Here.
Mr. Moto Pictures Thread
I just got another Betta last night. I didn't mean to but when I went to Meijers I saw their Betta selection again and they hadn't changed the water in their cups since the last time I was there a week ago. I got really pissed due to the fact that there isn't really anything you can do in order to stop the way people treat these fish in the stores just for a profit. I know it wouldn't make a difference in the long run but I picked one out that called to me and got him because it would make a difference in his life. At least now he's in clean water and now has a promise of a good quality life. It ticks me off that if someone is abusing their pets that the animal control can come in and sieze them including their fish, but if petstores or any stores that carry pets do so they do nothing to stop it. I wish we could change this and stop it for good... crying
I'll get pictures of him for you guys later on... Since I can't at the moment.
I think one of the reasons I got him was I had a bad dream a few months ago about seeing two mistreated Bettas at a Meijers store and I started coming everyday to change their water and medicate them for their fin rot because they wouldn't do anything about it. On the second or third day, the one betta that had a white spot on his head due to fin rot ended up flipping out when I went to change his water and swam out of his skin through the hole in his head, having nothing but his skeleton before dying. I woke up crying due to this and then tried to forget about it. The creepy thing is this Betta I got looks exactly like the one in my dream and has a lite colored spot on his head as well that has the starting of fin rot. I'm taking care of it though and with some hope he should pull through.

Yay! New baby!
Not to burst your bubble, though... Buying a fish kept in bad conditions only encourages the store to keep the fish like that. I would have heckled them about it untill you got the fish for free.
Interesting dream ._.

I would have heckled them about it untill you got the fish for free. Interesting dream ._. I know.. I just felt at the time there wasn't anything else I could do. I did complain loudly to the worker I talked toand asked to talk to a manager. He acted like he could give a s**t less and it went in one ear out the other, stating that no one was available. I've even complained about this to their managers in the past and they still do nothing. The only reason hey treat their feeder fish for ick every now and then is when they get in trouble for it through a company inspection. And one time when I pitched a fit at a manager that just said all he could do was SEE if he could do anything, after that they threatened to throw me out. They didn't though do to me stating: " I'm talking to you like a human being." People got pissed at this point and started to leave the store due to the way they were treating me. Should I try to complain to their corporate company? Also, I'll upload pictures soon. ^_^

I just sent a formal complaint through their corporate online contact list. If nothings done then I'm going to call their corporate offices until someone does something. If that doesn't work... Then I'll begin looking elsewhere for the solution. By the way... I was looking around at websites for pet shop laws in the USA and found this one. Looks like a great place...^_^ We should start a thread, adding what types of laws they have for pet-shops, Wildlife, and animals period. I don't have any really up my sleeve at the moment but it might help people here in the long run with similar problems. http://www.bornfreeusa.org/b4a1_petshoplaws_state.php?s=mi

And I though my WalMart was bad o.O True true....That's what I plan on. I wish i had a video camera...Because I'd go back and video tap it and put it online. I noticed there's a lot of Walmart fish videos on youtube but not ONE vid of the Betta at Meijer. WTF?

By the way, I went shopping today at Petco for the last decor I wanted for his tank. And when I saw their Bettas I was impressed. Since the last time I was in there they put up two shelves to house their Bettas in their cups, made with dividers to help ease their stress. Also, all of their cups looked like they had just been cleaned today and all of them looked healthy save for one with fin rot. Hect, for even a chain-store, they take better care of their Bettas than Pruess Pets here ( a locally owned and operated store). When I told the lady up front about the one with fin rot as I complimented them on the care of them, she said she'd have someone right on it.
Kim and I saw what they call a King Betta there, AKA Giant PKs. He was HUGE! And I thought Roho was huge at about 3 inches...lol! This Blue Beautiful guy was at least 4 inches long from nose to tip of back fin. He was so long that just sitting still in his cup, he was a centimeter or two away from either his back fin or nose touching either end of his cup at once. I want him sooo bad, but alas, I has not more room at the moment unless I get a five gallon to divide..lol! I'm addicted to bettas.. I know.... sweatdrop

I went to Meijers again today to see if they did anything about it. it looks like some of the water had been partially changed but half of them were still in the same conditions. just for the hell of it I took a look at their feeder goldfish and pet goldfish, all of which have ick. I found the lady which worked in the department and she said she only takes care of what they tell her to do as she stocked the Biscuits for the dog food containers. She acted like she didn't even really care about her job, pisses me off. Anyways, after I left, I told my brother not to buy their feeder fish for his Oscar because of the illness they have that his big guy could catch. I'm thinking about buying a cheap digital camera in the next month so I can go take pictures and spread the word on their care of animals at their store. I think I might e-mail Meijers back about the situation as well, and complain again.

Update:
It seems going the corporate route helped. It's either due to the three notices I sent them with statements about each time I did so, or the fact that one of my ex-co-workers that now works there talked to an old friend of mine that just so-happens to be a manager. He comes into Kroger where I work a few times a week just to chit-chat with us, and when I told him about my problem with their Bettas they keep, he said he'd talk to his manager MaryAnne, that takes care of the cashiers. She's an old friend of mine and she used to just cashier there so I was surprised to find that she was a manager. I also got mad at the one employee again that I talked to previously, the one that said she only does what they tell her to do, and I asked how she'd feel if I filmed their fish department to advertise what was going on. She threatened to grab a manager after that and then I complained to him.
Well, I went there about a month later just to check on their Bettas. I was surprised to see that they moved them closer to the RO system and seem to be taking better care of them. It looks like they still don't change the water everyday, but they have started using meds to help, and more frequent water changes a week. They're still a long ways off as to the care of their Bettas, but I'm thankful that they seem to have made an improvement. With knowing Miejers though, who knows how long they keep it up. If they do though I'll be greatly surprised and more appreciative.
