It was a gloomy, wet day. Jove usually approved of such days, when the forests smelled like water and plant rot, and the shadows hung heavy between the trees, but the weather carried less promise when the pup had to attend classes all day. He would sometimes stare out the window to see if he could catch a glimpse of the forests in the distance, but it was impossible to smell them from the schoolyard.

But today Jove was not in class, he was running headlong towards the forest, caught in a complete panic. It was gym class again, and the attempted physical contact... He couldn't bear it. The harmless gesture had sent him running again, splashing through puddles and dodging obstacles until he was running off campus. And then he bounded on four legs, fur flying behind him like a banner until it was plastered down by the water and mud he dashed through. By the time he found a puppy-sized hole to hide in, he was already so deep into the forest he didn't recognize anything around him.

With a terrified little whine, Jove curled up at the very back of the rotting log he was hiding in, his little eyes glowing frightfully in the darkness as he tried to take comfort from the earthy scents surrounding him.

Ren woke up on a particularly disgusting morning. Outside, it was wet and rainy, water dripping down the windows and creating splintered shadows inside of his room. There was no one there when he awoke; anyone sleeping in his room had already left earlier, and Ren had rubbed his eyes sleepily before forcing himself out of his nice, warm covers to slog through the hallways to classes.

His day deviated from the norm, however, when he walked past a particular classroom and overhead one of the students talking:

"...a little wisp kid...think his name is Jove or something..."

Ren stopped walking. Backtracked. And stood just outside the classroom, hidden from view as he leaned over to listen, peering in. He did not know who the student was, but one ear flicked upwards with curiosity at the mention of his "little brother," as he had taken to referring to Jove as.

"...just freaked out for some reason," the ghoul was saying, flipping a hand unconcernedly. "All I did was try and grab his wrist to guide him over to the other side of the room, and he just took off."

Ren's heart leapt into his throat. He did not doubt that it had only taken a small gesture to scare Jove, but the fact that he had actually run away, out of the classroom, made him worried. Pressing himself closer to the classroom, he tried to hear the rest.

"...I've heard he's an okay kid, but I'm not sure what set him off this time," the ghoul continued with a shrug. "I think he ran off somewhere, I'm not sure - "

"Where?"

The question burst from Ren's lips before he really knew what he was doing. The two ghouls in the room stood there, staring at him with surprise, but Ren ignored the fact that he had pretty much just admitted to eavesdropping on them.

"What?" said the one who had been speaking before, a confused look on her face.

"I said where did he go?" Ren said impatiently, then flicked his ears back to show he hadn't meant any disrespect. "Please, I'll...I'll go find him, which way did he run?"

Flummoxed, the ghoul stammered out "Erm. I think in the direction of the forest? But like I said, I'm not sure - "

Ren did not stay to hear the rest of the conversation. Instead, he was already out the door, slinging his backpack over his shoulder and heading off across the campus towards the woods. The rain obscured his vision, sliding down his face and neck in cold, wet streaks, which made him vastly uncomfortable, but his hatred of all things wet and watery would have to be put on the back burner, at least for now. Finding Jove was more important, since, if he knew Jove at all, the poor boil was probably scared.

Lightning cracked across the sky, making jagged, glowing explosions as Ren entered the forest, swiping a hand across his face. His wings felt heavier than usual, laden with rainwater, and it was difficult to see at all, the trees casting elongated shadows across the damp forest floor.

"Jove..?" Ren called softly, wincing slightly as another crack of thunder echoed overhead. "Jove? It's me, Ren...where are you, Freckles?"

He had the distinct feeling that it would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Ren let out a frustrated sigh, rubbing his hands up and down his arms in an attempt to stay warm. He glanced left, then right, forward, backwards, anywhere, hoping for a glimpse of the little foxfire boil.

"Jove!" This time it was louder, more determined. "Jove, where are you? It's just me, it's Ren! Jove?"

The pup cowered in the dark earth, muddy fur picking up dead leaves and loam as he shifted anxiously. He didn't know where he had run during his panic, and with the rain he couldn't catch any scent that would lead him safely back to the dorms. All he could smell was the water and the earth. Even his faint footprints would have been washed away in short order.

Putting his head down on his front paws, he whined and shivered, eyes flashing in the dark hollow where he lay. If anything it was even more frightening than when he wandered all alone, this time he had a place he needed to go home to, and didn't know how he would find it again. He might never see his friends again, or his caretaker...

The little pup trembled fitfully, whining all the while in a sad, frightened little voice. He couldn't see much past the rain outside the edge of the rotting log, but his eyes might have been visible from outside his dark shelter.

Fifteen minutes later, and Ren was going in circles.

With a frustrated sigh, he reached a hand up, pushing damp hair back away from his face and massaged his temples, trying to think. Under normal circumstances, Jove was a fast runner, so being frightened would only heighten his speed, adrenaline most likely making him go faster.

"Okay," Ren said aloud, exhaling slowly and closing his eyes briefly, trying to clear his thoughts. "Small foxfire boil. Scared. Running into a forest. Most likely hiding."

But hiding WHERE? This was the problem. Wings curling against his back, Ren stepped further into the forest, pushing aside rain dampened twigs and branches, his feet making gross squelching noises in the muddy ground. He tried calling aloud for Jove again, but to no avail. The sound of the rain was muted by the thick trees, but it was still audible, and most likely had washed away any chance of footprints. Ren stopped walking once he was several more minutes in, closing his eyes again. Standing there, he breathed slowly, quietly, hoping for any sign, any sound, the smallest hint -

There. It was faint, and it was small, barely audible above the thundering rain, but it was there. A soft puppy whine. Ren's eyes flickered open, and he glanced to the left first. No, there was nothing in that direction but large trees, no place for a boil to hide, though it was not entirely disregarded. The right held more places, more shrubbery and fallen trees, but Ren stood still, hesitating as he weighed which direction to go. Finally, with a sigh, he headed to the right, hoping he was correct in his assumptions.

Thankfully - thankfully - the whimpering seemed a bit louder over here, and soon Ren could hear it much more clearly. "Jove?" he called out quietly, not wanting to startle the poor boil. "Jove...it's me, it's Ren..."

Something flashed off to the side, and Ren whirled quickly around, eyes catching a glimpse of something - a rotten hollow log. Blinking, he slowly stepped towards the log. Yes, there was definitely movement there, but the log was way too small for even someone like Jove to squeeze into. Narrowing his eyes slightly, his heartbeat quickening, Ren knelt down, peering into the log.

And then let out all of his breath in a relieved sigh. It was a puppy - a very small, fluffy little thing, no bigger than perhaps a small raccoon. Ren might have disregarded it as just a stray, had not he seen those wide, glowing eyes - he knew those eyes.

"Jove," Ren said softly. He reached a hand in - very slowly - trying to coax the little one out. "Jove, it's me, it's Ren...are you okay..?"

Was there something in the woods? The pup cowered as he saw movement out in the rain, a tall shape that appeared to be searching intently for something. As it got closer Jove could only make out the vague shape of it's legs, and a lithe tail swishing behind. Another whine escaped him before he could quiet it and he trembled with the fear of being snatched out by the monster and eaten.

Jove heard the faint voice over the drumming of the rain, but when the shadow loomed over the log and the hand reached in, that was enough to send the pup back into hysterics. After all, in that form his friend's hand was almost as big as he was in his soaked, muddy state. The puppy growled and whined almost in the same breath as the hand grew near, snapping and snarling viciously. When the encroaching hand kept reaching for him, the pitch of his growl rose substantially and he sunk his tiny, needle like teeth into Ren's finger.

It wasn't until he tasted blood that Jove let go, whining as he recognized the freckles on that hand. Nobody else he knew had freckles even on their hands... His wet ears went back in dismay, and he crouched farther back in the hollow log. He just bit his friend. He was a bad dog.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 13, 2011 7:18 pm

It was definitely Jove hiding in that log; Ren could not mistake those eyes. They were large, luminous, and filled with terror - a terror that Ren was not certain as to the cause of. It would be difficult to get Jove out of the log; he was not even sure that the other boil could recognize him. The way that Jove was snarling at him surprised Ren, and he almost pulled his hand back - almost. His desire to make sure that the younger boil was safe and sound outweighed his desire to not get bitten. Which, it turned out, was a good thing, since Jove opened tiny jaws and clamped his teeth around Ren's finger.

He winced visibly, but managed to keep from letting out a squawk of pain. Jove's teeth were as sharp as needles, and Ren could feel blood beginning to slide down his hand. There was a whimper, then a scuffle, and Jove released his hand, retreating back farther into the log, pressing a tiny, fluffy body back against the log. In this form, he was really extraordinarily small, and Ren thought he was probably a lot fluffier than he was, since at the moment he was soaked with rainwater, his fur dripping.

"Jove," Ren said quietly, giving the boil an encouraging smile. He kept his hand in the lock, going down on all fours to peer into it, waving his hand in a come here motion. "Jove, it's okay, it doesn't hurt .Come on out, I'll take care of you. It's just me, just Ren."

Jove hesitated and whined more, every piteous noise only half lost in the sounds of the rain. Ren's voice was still calm and coaxing, and step by step, the pup crawled towards the entrance of the log. The taste of blood in his mouth wasn't bad in and of itself, but the implications made him feel sick. And that was some feat for a ghost. He wanted nothing more than to wiggle out of that log and curl up in the safety of his friend's arms. Oh, but he was such a bad dog...

With his tail tucked very firmly between his legs, he cringed when he reached Ren's hand and gave the wound a tiny, regretful lick. The wound was deep, if only a semicircle of miniature punctures, but living creatures could bleed lots and get infected with weird things that the ghost could only guess at... Jove whined and crawled up against Ren's hand to give it a better lick in apology. Even if Ren said it didn't hurt, it could be really bad, and the fear that surged through him only increased the pitch of his whines.

Jove might not have crawled out of the log, but he had crawled far enough for Ren to get a good grip on him.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 13, 2011 7:55 pm

"Jove..?" Ren tried again, a little tentatively as he inched forward, trying to get a better view of the little puppy. The boil was whimpering, a small whine emanating from him, and for a few moments, Ren thought that he wouldn't be able to get him out. But then he felt a small lick to his finger, an almost hesitant one, and then a handful of fluff. Ren exhaled a breath he hadn't realized he was holding, sighing in relief. He twisted his body, managing to get his other hand into the log, and then with one quick tug he swiftly pulled Jove out of the log.

Up close, the boil was even smaller than Ren had thought. He had never seen Jove in his natural form before, but, as expected, it was outrageously adorable, even muddied and damp like he was. Jove was trembling slightly, a small whine echoing from him, and Ren stood slowly, cradling the pup in his arms. He gently ran a hand over Jove's soft head, stroking his ears.

"It's all right, I'm not mad," he said. "Now let's get you out of here."

Ren debated flying out, but the weight of wings from the rain, as well as the overcast sky would make it quite difficult, so he settled for just trundling slowly out of the forest. He held Jove carefully, and once he was out of the forest, Ren tucked his wings around himself, attempting to shield the puppy from the now pouring rain. Students ran past him, giving him a few odd looks as he walked, but he ignored them all, or flashed them a noncommittal smile, making his way across the campus to the monster dorms, where he immediately headed upstairs to the second floor, pushing open the door to his room. Ren dripped water across the carpet, but he didn't stop, instead stepping into the connecting bathroom.

"First things first," Ren said. "Let's get you dried off and warm."

He had a feeling Jove would stay in his puppy form, at least for a bit longer, if only to calm himself down. Ren snagged a towel from the rack and wrapped it around the boil, rubbing gently, but firmly as he dried him. Once he was satisfied, he rolled Jove up into the towel and then carried the whole bundle out to the room, where he set it gently on the bed.

"Lemme get changed, and then I'll come dry you some more," Ren told Jove. He was beginning to chill in his soaked clothes, shivering slightly as he moved over to the dresser.

Jove's little whimpers slowly died out while he was tucked against Ren's chest, his cold little body absorbing the heat from his friend's hands and body. He curled up into a little shame-filled ball and tried not to let the warmth and gentle movement soothe his guilt, bad dogs shouldn't get petting and hugging, they should be left in logs in the rain.

It was hard work though, and by the time Ren's wings shielded him from the rain the wisp's glowing eyes had drifted closed, and his tense little body and relaxed into trembling blob of wet fur instead of pointy chicken bone heels and elbows. When he smelled the dorms instead of the rainy outdoors he opened his eyes, little nose wiggling as he began scenting the air. It seemed Ren wasn't going to turn him in at the principal's office for detention or worse... The thought both relaxed the puppy and made him feel even more guilt.

But it wasn't until his scrawny, wet body was wrapped in one of Ren's cosy towels that he actually put up a bit of a fight. Weak perhaps, but a squirm nonetheless. He was getting mud and gross things all over the towel! It was bad enough that Ren had bled and gone out in the rain for him, the little ghost was certainly not willing to make a mess of his friend's stuff.

When Ren's back was turned, Jove shrugged out of the towel and half slipped, half jumped off the side of the bed, landing on the floor with a sickening splat of wet fur. Not graceful, but it got the job done... Then he stood for a minute, ears drooping, tail tucked between his legs, as he glanced between the bathroom where he could at least get clean, and the door, where he should probably go if he didn't want to cause his friend any more trouble.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:43 pm

Ren heard the little thump of puppy feet hit the floor of his room, and he turned, slightly startled and mildly concerned when he saw Jove splayed out on the hardwood floor before he pushed himself up, tail between his legs as he trembled. Ren, halfway in the middle of stripping off his wet shirt, pulled it the rest of the way off and draped it over the side of the hamper, stepping over to the shaking puppy.

"And where do you think you're going, hmmm?" he asked gently, patting the top of Jove's head. He'd already put on a clean, dry pair of sweatpants, and they felt nice and warm against his cold skin. "Don't think I'm going to let you leave just yet, Freckles. We've gotta get you cleaned up first, and warm, and then maybe have some hot chocolate and cookies."

Shrugging into a long sleeved shirt, Ren pushed the sleeves up and bent down, picking up Jove (he really was very small) and carting him into the bathroom where he gently, but somewhat unceremoniously, plopped him down into the bathtub. He turned the water on warm, the stream not too fast, and then grabbed the washcloth, gently working the kinks and dirt from Jove's matted and wet fur.

"So," said Ren as he worked, leaning over the side of the bathtub. "I don't know how you got that far in the woods to begin with, but it worries me when you're out by yourself."

His hand stopped briefly. "You know you can always come to me if you're frightened, okay?" Ren said gently, and smiled down at the little puppy as he resumed scrubbing. "Next time don't run into a forest in the middle of a storm by yourself."

Jove limply let himself be picked up. It certainly solved his bathroom or door dilemma, seeing as he was now on his way to be clean. And also rather warm. His little paws slowly slid on the bottom of the tub until he was flopped on his belly, with the warm water crawling up above his tiny nose. It was certainly a good thing he didn't need to breathe.

He lifted his head when Ren started rubbing at his fur, giving the gryphon a doleful expression with those big, glowing puppy eyes. HIs friend had been worried? Jove realized he wasn't surprised, why else would Ren go out in the rain to find him, and recognize the sound of his whine, or even the sight of him in his natural form? The pup was careful not to show this fluffy body in the presence of other students, not with how sensitive he was of his small stature and childish appearance. But Ren knew him well enough to recognize him anyway.

The little whine started up all over again, squeaky and pitiful as Jove poured out all his guilt. The worry, and the biting, and the wet he knew Ren disliked, the little pup felt so bad to have put his friend through all that and the puppy-crying was the only way he seemed to be able to get out that sorrow.

But he was slowly getting clean, and the water was slowly getting dark with all the mud that had been stuck into the pup's fur. He was also slowly warming up, his temperature rising from the chilly outdoor temperature to that of the bath water. Ren could have turned it right up to steaming and had a miniature puppy-shaped hot water bottle had he so desired.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 13, 2011 9:38 pm

Ren's fingers worked the soap into Jove's fur, the water in the basin of the bathtub going from clear to a dirty, dusky pale brown as he cleaned the mud from the puppy. Jove was small, yes, but he had so much fur that it would take a short while to get everything out. His hair had managed to catch several leaves, a few twigs, and definitely a lot of mud.

Pulling a stray leaf from Jove's back, Ren's eyes flickered down to rest on the puppy, lifting a brow at that continuous whine. Jove's eyes were large, baleful as he stared dejectedly up at him. Ren playfully poked his nose.

"Don't give me that sad look," he said cheerfully, dumping a cup of water over top Jove's head and wiping off some more dirt. "I would come for you any day if you needed me. Isn't that what friends are for? What big brothers are for?"

Finally finished washing him, Ren lifted the sopping puppy from the bathtub, letting him shake himself out before wrapping him in a towel again, carrying him back into the main part of the room. It was then that Ren flopped onto his back on the bed, pulling Jove to rest across his stomach and chest, absently drying off his fur with the towel.

"I suppose I should ask you why you were running, but that would mean you'd have to shift back to human," Ren mused, wiping off Jove's muzzle. "So I'll wait on that front. But really, Jove, next time don't just run off!" He offered the boil a crooked smile "Can't find ya so easily if you're off fleeing into the forest! Just come to my room, or LW's, or Alessa's. I promise one of us will take care of you."

At the poke on the nose, Jove tilted his head back and let out the most pitiful, heart-wrenching puppy howl, trailing off into silence. Ren would really do that, come for him regardless? His eyes closed as the gryphon poured water over his head. Yeah, he had never had a real brother, but Ren was definitely like a big brother to him. Complete from protection to good-natured picking on.

The pup relaxed and let Ren scoop him out of the water, his little body feeling heavy with all that wet fur. He couldn't even shake properly when he was set down. The fur was weighed down too heavily with water and all that resulted from his attempt was nearly falling over.

And with that he submitted to being scooped back up, and wrapped in the fluffiness of a towel to be carried to the bed. The pup set his head down on his forepaws, licking his nose with a pink tongue after Ren rubbed his muzzle. He whined slightly.

"Scared..." he admitted quietly, a cryptic confession that might have explained why he ran off instead of going somewhere familiar and safe. He still couldn't help it, the panic just overwhelmed him and sent him running with no opportunity for logic to intercede and take him somewhere safe. It was the same panic that made him bite out of fear.

He squirmed around to lick Ren's fingers, Did the bite still hurt? The gryphon really should get it tended to...
PostPosted: Mon Mar 14, 2011 3:34 pm

That howl made Ren stop in his tracks, his heart melting. It just sounded so...miserable. And sad (and adorable too, but Ren squelched that feeling, trying to focus on the miserable and sad aspect). He rubbed Jove's head affectionately, tilting the puppy's muzzle up to look him in the eyes.

"I promise I'll always come find you, okay?" he said cheerfully, and then proceeded to dump more water over Jove's head.

Once they were back in the main part of the room, Jove settled on Ren's stomach as he toweled him off (he really did have quite a lot of fur), the puppy whined again before one small, quiet word was breathed out, barely audible. Ren blinked, unsure if he'd even heard him, and then a gentle expression came over his face.

"You were scared?" he said softly, rubbing Jove's ears. "That's okay; everyone gets scared. I know I do. But you can't run off by yourself again; I just get worried, and I know your other friends would too. Next time you get scared, just take a deep breath and try and run this way instead of into the forest."

A small, pink, slightly rough tongue prodded his fingers, and Ren blinked down, lifting his hand. "Oh," he said, having forgotten about the bite to his finger. But now that he looked at it, it was rather gross, dried blood caking the skin around it. He glanced at Jove and shook his head, smiling. "Don't give me that worried look," he said, patting his head, scratching behind Jove's ears. "It doesn't hurt." Much.

Sitting up a little, Ren twisted over the side of the bed, careful to hold Jove steady so the puppy wouldn't fall off. His fingers found the handle to his bedside table drawer, and he pulled it open, rummaging around in it until he found a half empty box of bandaids. Then he settled back down, petting Jove, and rubbed at his finger with a corner of the towel until it was clean. Then he wrapped a bandaid around it and held it up to show Jove.

"See?" he said lightly. "All better."

Jove's puppy dog eyes in his human form were cute, but in his natural form, it was heartbreaking. How was he supposed to take a deep breath and run in the right direction when he couldn't focus enough to breathe at all? Not breathing in the first place was not the point. He would try to do okay next time though...

The sad puppy eyes morphed into a scowling face, pressing his lips together like he was about to bark. That wound looked not happy at all, and rubbing it off and slapping a band-aid on it was hardly the sort of treatment Jove was hoping for. He needed... antibiotics, and ointments, and other healthy things so it would heal well and not get infected.

"Mrrrr..." Jove made a little noise in his throat, and glared at the band-aid.

Enough was enough. The tired little pup squirmed out of the towelling, and staggered on all four paws for a second before hopping off Ren's chest and onto the soft covers. Then he rubbed his face on the pillows, flopping over to wiggle on the covers, and doing the best he could to finish drying off his fur. It might have been getting everything else slightly damp, but Ren slept under the covers and not on top of them, so he should be okay.

It looked almost playful, the way Jove wiggled around, but once he was done he collapsed in a tired heap next to the gryphon. His fur would need a lot of brushing after that one...
