Quote: All of the money we make on these items will go to Red Cross, up to ten thousand dollars. Quote: The ten dollars spent on this item will go toward helping those affected by earthquake. if i could punch whoever thought of this idea in the throat, i would. over and over

Oh, now that's wrong. That's sick and wrong. Most people will miss that little clause.

If you're going to raise money for charity give all of it away if not the vast majority of the money minus some overhead costs. That whole 10% after $10,000 is kind of low. Is Gaia really that hard up for money?

Okay, TBF apparently there's a donation cap? I didn't know this until recently. I've only heard people talking about it and never seen a source, though.
Like they can only donate so much legally? But still- then make the items limited edition (only up to 10k + whatever business fees they'll have from all this) or just donate whatever after the 10k to a different organization...
If 1000 people buy the item that's $10, there's 10k already. And you KNOW more than 1000 people will be getting it.

It is a 10k limit on how much they can donate and get written off their taxes. Basically, the 10k they are donating won't hurt their profits in the slightest. In fact, the 10k they "raise" won't even show up on their financial ledgers, since it won't be counted as earnings at all. Tl;dr, 10k is an absolutely pathetic amount and you were 100% right in your first post here.

I just assumed that it was something like "OK, once we make 10k we'll stop selling the items"... But I could be wrong.

Nope, once they've sold 10k's worth of them, they'll start making money from them confused

Kejo; Oh OFC what they donate won't be hurting them at all. They're just taking OUR donations and getting a tax break. None of it will be out of their pockets, they're just organizing it all.
Like honestly, they should take a chunk of the donations to cover any fees and wages for people involved. I'm okay with them doing that. But actually profiting off an item that is marketed as an item for a donation for Japan? That's just sick.
Heck, if they made 5k extra, just donate your max and use the rest of the donation money for tax related stuff so they didn't lose out. Even THAT I'd be okay with.
Buzz, it's not. If it was, I'd be totally chill with them doing this. I'm glad they're doing SOMETHING but the fact they're profiting is gross.

Oh and add one more thing for why Gaia is a disgusting corporation.
They've started deleteing threads that hold this viewpoint.

If they've been moved into invisible subforums, it is still the same effect as if they'd been deleted either way.

It's a disgusting move and I can't believe anyone, especially people who say they have friends and family living in Japan, could stand to make a profit from this.

Yeah, they've changed it to what they should have done in the first place. I'm still pretty angry at them for having thought they could get away with it.
