The night was colder then it usually was. The moon was full, and shone brightly against the sleek coat of the proud lion as he hunkered down low in the thick grass. He stalked his prey, his muscles tensing as his large paws shifted the earth beneath him. His dark mane helped to provide cover from his soon to be dinner.

Hazel eyes remained targeted at the wildebeest. It had strayed far from the others, just far enough for him to try to take it down. He needed some time by himself, away from the crew. He would spend that time alone gorging on his meal. It was his favorite, something he hadn’t had in a long while. His stomach began to tingle with that deep ache. He held his jaw shut, and swallowed. Just watching the great beast move was making him salivate.

He waited, biding his time until it was perfect…

Powerful hind legs pushed the great cat forward, his body bolting with as much force as he could bring himself to use. His nostrils flared as he closed the distance between himself and the poor creature that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The lion’s claws projected from their sheaths as he leapt up at his prey. Pearly whites stained with blood as they sunk deep into the flesh of the unfortunate animal’s rump. His paws raked at the wildebeest’s soft tissue, giving him enough leverage to pull himself up to meet the creature’s jugular. Massive jaws snapped violently, claws digging deeper.

The lion gave no time for the creature to so much as whimper. He tackled his prey to the ground, all the while dodging kicks and jabs from the beast’s futile resistance. His jaws only tightened, making sure that the suffocation was swift. Moments passed, and soon the beast’s movements ceased. The lion smiled in satisfaction once he had finished taking down his night’s kill. He would spend a few nights away, long enough to rejuvenate himself. He scrunched his nose, still sore from Zamora’s assault. It had healed up nicely, fur growing back where it should.

Torin began to prepare for his feast, taking great pride in his handiwork. He exerted little effort, or at least that was what he told anyone who asked him about his hunts. He had to put off a perfect front. He was a captain, and had an image to maintain. A sly, cruel, and lethal image. But before he could find any pleasure from his hard earned meal, his ears perked.

Golden eyes shut tightly as her small form huddled up against a larger figure. The young cub shivered as she whimpered. She was barely a few weeks old, not old enough to make it on her own. She nuzzled against the fallen feline which was disfigured beyond recognition. A bloody mess covered the small area in the den. The youth’s cries echoed as she continued to try to awaken what was once her mother.

All she could remember was the horrifying sight that took place mere hours before. The fangs, the scratching, the growling of a mother defending her den and child. The rest of it was all a blur. The cub felt the heat of her mother's body fading quicker. Soon, there would be nothing left to keep her warm. In her heart she knew this was the end. She could feel it.

Tears stained the youngling’s face as all of her efforts to rouse the lioness had been in vain. She was frightened, and overwhelmed by loneliness and sorrow. Her small body had begun to give in to her weakened, broken heart.

Torin’s ears flicked as he tried to make sense of the noises. His head turned slowly as he scanned the savannah, pinpointing where the sound had come from. His eyes squinted as he picked himself up from the ground. His curiosity got the better of him, and he abandoned his kill to inspect the sound.

His strong form took off in a run, he would have to be quick if he didn’t want someone else stealing what was his. But then again, he would always fight for it if the need arose. His legs carried him off towards a den. It wasn’t but a few yards from where he was. He crept up to the entrance slowly, unsure of who or what lived inside. As he took another step, he heard a small whimper. Perhaps it was some wounded or abandoned pup he could have for dessert…

But as he grew closer, he could smell it. The air was thick with blood. As the scents filled his nostrils, his ears flattened. It couldn’t be. But as he came upon the bloody mass, he knew it was. The lion bared his teeth, and let out a loud roar filled with more anger then anguish. He drew closer to the disfigured corpse, wondering why such a fate had befallen the feline. She would have made quite a Corsair had he introduced her to his leader. It was a pity, but what was done was done. At least he was able to derive some sort of fun from her those many moons ago.

Before he could bring himself to turn away and leave the den, his eyes caught sight of a small blue ball of fuzz all matted down in a red mess. He stepped closer, and leaned down, his dark eyes meeting smaller lighter ones.

The cub’s golden orbs widened as the larger lion’s face came down to meet hers. He was so much larger then she was- if he wanted to, he could smash her underneath his paw to put her out of her misery. However, something seemed different about this creature she had come face to face with. A strong smell filled her tiny nose. She remembered it, only it was more potent on him then it was on her own mother, stronger on him then it was in the den.

She used as much strength as she could manage, standing herself up only to continue to stare into those cold and commanding chocolate eyes. Her tears came to a halt, whatever was left of them becoming lost in the fur of her cheeks. She was afraid. She wondered if this creature could wake up mommy. She watched him with expectant and hopeful eyes.

Torin’s ears perked up as he watched the cub. As she stood, he could finally get a better view of her. His eyes scanned along her furry puffball of a body. She definitely needed a bath before that blood dried up and settled on her blue coat. As he continued to make his observations, he noticed how much she looked like… him.

He shook his head, “Well… I’ll be…” his voice trailed off as he stared at the mini feminine version of himself. Female… pft! How could the female that he spent such a short time with make such a mistake as to bear him a FEMALE!!! He needed to have powerful and honorable sons fit for his crew, not wenches! He would have to bring her back to the pride, and find one of the females fit enough to look after her.

Something caught him in the midst of his thoughts. That determination in her eyes… It was something that he recognized, for as he looked at her he was truly looking at himself. Only, she was a girl. But no matter, he would use her to help build his ranks when she grew older. She would make a fine hunter, or even a Corsair.

While the larger lion was lost in his thoughts, the young cub took the opportunity to crawl closer to him with the little strength she had. Her tail flicked behind her as her eyes watched him carefully. He wasn’t doing what she wanted, and so she would fight for his attention. Her small mouth opened, and closed shut around his paw. Maybe a little forcefulness would get him to try and help her.

She was very hungry. Her small stomach made lots of little noises. She fought back those pains as she focused on his paw. She refused to let go. She would dominate the large being, and make it do as she pleased.

Torin’s eyes snapped open as the pain rushed up along his foreleg. He scowled down at the little creature. First it was his face being assaulted by a youngling back home, and now his paws? What is wrong with all of these little cubs just attacking him. He was more puzzled about this then anything. The cub sure did have some spunk, and he liked spunk in a woman. Perhaps she would be of more value than he had originally thought. She would rear fine offspring if she made it to adulthood. And this captain would make sure of that. Knowing the cub was not in the best of shape, he denied his body the reaction it wanted to perform- fling the cub across the cave and off of his paw. Instead, he bent down low, letting his dark pink tongue brush across her small body. Her coat was soft, and she seemed so fragile. He took care not to hurt her as he spent just enough time to clean the majority of the blood from her. If the crew could see this- they’d never treat him with respect again!

He heard the noises the cub was making as he did so, and decided he would have to take her back to his kill. He only hoped that some wild dogs, or hyenas hadn’t found it first.

He was unsure of how to go about picking up a small cub, so he just opened his mouth and picked her up. The thought never crossed his mind to grab her by the scruff of her neck. He was to concerned with thinking about what he would have to name her. He knew she must have had a name before, but that was long lost. It had died alongside her mother.

Torin would bring her back to the pride in a few days time. He knew that once he reached home he would have to find a suitable female to raise his cub. He had no time to sit down and care for her AND manage his crew.
