User Image Dumaka sniffed at the ground eagerly. The male couldn't remember when he last properly fed and he was finally picking up on the scent of small prey. Out of habit he perked his ears and listened. He may not be as keen of hearing as other wolves but he wasn't likely to ignore the sense either. As he expected Dumaka heard nothing other than the sound of the breeze in the tree and the call of birds. Out of necessity he scanned his surroundings for signs of small animal paw prints. He had learned that to make up for his 'disability' by stretching the use of his other senses.

To his right his noticed raccoon prints and with only a moments slight hesitation, raccoons could be very aggressive, he quietly padded in pursuit. With his ears forward and eyes scanning the surrounding bush, Dumaka looked more like he was expecting an ambush than a meal. He had never been a very good hunter and then thought of continue having to hunt small game was staring to weigh on him. he let out a small snort of irritation at the thought.

After going a short ways he stopped. He could hear the sounds of raccoons chattering further ahead blocked from view by a bend in the path. Multiple raccoons. "More oppurtunity for me," he thought, but then a look of annoyance crossed his face, "but more opportunity for them as well."

Although he would have to be very hungry to condescend to eat raccoon, Ralastor found himself stalking very near the scent and sound of the distasteful creatures. His interest, however, was in the male wolf that smelled of foreign places and uncertainty. He had yet to actually claim any territory - goodness knows on his own the local packs would have no problem simply chasing him away if he got too cocky - but he was in the general area of the land he planned to one day make his own, so it seemed logical enough to practice guarding his borders.

Creeping up behind the stranger, he watched him and his movements, trying to remain unseen. It looked as though he'd be hunting soon, and Ralastor wanted to confront him before he had a kill to guard. That could potentially make him much, much more dangerous, and after the lone she-wolf this adolescent was not about to underestimate solitary wanderers the way he once did.

"Stay where you are," he declared at last, stepping out of hiding with a low rasp. Exuding confidence, the mostly black wolf held himself like an alpha, not a lone adolescent. "And state your name and business."

Dumaka whipped his head around in surprise to look at the source of the voice. He had not heard the black wolf coming and silently cursed his disability. The new male held himself like he commanded the entire forest, and for a moment Dumaka considered turning tail to run. He mentally scolded himself. For all the things he was, "weak, inept, graceless," he was not a coward.

While turning himself ever so slight so that he could better see the dark wolf Dumaka observed that the wolf, as impressive as he was, was still an adolescent. However the knowledge did little to quell a swelling sense of urgency in the pit of stomach. In his former pack Dumaka had known young wolves that would have been able to make a much more esteemed kill than a raccoon without hesitation. "I may be an inept hunter but I am not a fool," he thought.

Forcing himself into a awkward stance that he had hoped would appear more at ease Dumaka responded, "I'm simply looking for an easy meal. I had no intention of stealing large game from another pack." In his nervousness he licked his lips, "as for who I am, I am called Dumaka."

Dumaka. The complete lack of hesitation to comply with his demands filled Ralastor with a certain proud joy. He was assertive enough that the newcomer assumed he spoke on behalf of a pack - if not as one's leader. The thought made him stand taller, his tail high. He had missed this complete certainty, the reassurance that he knew his place in the world.

Dominance.

It was a wonderful feeling.

He inhaled deeply, as if supping on Dumaka's perfume of passivity, rolling the flavour around in his mind and enjoying it. Of course, it was not the smell but the body posture and the reply that gave away the other's feelings. Unless, of course, taunted Ralastor's newly discovered sense of caution, it was a careful act to trick him into letting down his guard. This in mind, he did not walk any closer to continue the conversation.

"A lone mouthful of flesh hunted on my lands is still stolen flesh," he responded, raw ferocity in his tone. Forget that this... technically wasn't his territory. "Consider yourself lucky you've yet to make a kill."

Dumaka tried to visibly hide his nervousness but he allowed his eye to quickly dart around the surrounding area. He didn't see any signs of other wolves but the aggression of the younger wolf set him on edge. He had hoped that by complying so easily with the new wolf's questions that he may have left the meeting with some shred of dignity. Yet the umber coloured wolf was rapidly beginning to to imagine that he would either be leaving with his tail between his legs or with his own blood matted into his fur.

"He said, 'my land'," Dumaka quickly thought, "like he owns it. Could he really be an alpha at such a young age?." Dumaka doubted that. However the bravado that the dark wolf exuded was impressive. "He may not have a pack with him but that doesn't mean he is less dangerous." He cleared his throat, "I meant only to pass through, I had no intention of stealing." He allowed himself a small shift in place so that he could better see the young wolf. "I will leave your territory without hunting should you point me in best direction."

Dumaka felt his stomach quiver with hunger and hoped that he would be spared the dignity of not having the wolf hear it rumble. Of course his stomach, much like his ears, betrayed him and let out a small grumble in protest. Dumaka's eyes widened in embarrassment, his face blatantly mortified.

So much for salvaging the wolf's impression of him.

The edge of paranoia he'd felt a moment earlier softened. Surely no wolf could fake the sound of an empty stomach. Ralastor sidled a little closer to get a better look. The wanderer was surely older than he was, but probably wasn't much bigger. Interesting that he let himself be bossed around by a younger. Was it fear, or exhaustion, or natural submissiveness?

"How did you come to be here?" He asked, cocking his head slightly to the side to reveal true curiosity below the harsh interrogation style of his speech. Was the stranger little more than a nomad, born alone and destined to die alone? More importantly, could he be useful to Ralastor in any way? His scent was certainly strange, not entirely of this place, so perhaps he had no ties or naturally allegiances to any of the local packs just yet. Certainly he wasn't familiar enough with the land to realize Ralastor was no more than a lone wolf himself. Not that he would be for long - his encounter with the female in heat had seen to that. Once those pups were ready to be without their mother, he could begin to build the foundations of his pack.

It might be good to have someone with him in case the dam fought to keep them from him. Although Ralastor naturally inclined towards the brave, the clever, the strong... the subservient had their place in the world too.

As the younger wolf moved closer to Dumaka, the umber wolf felt more at ease. The movements seemed less aggressive than his voice had been. The younger wolf seemed to be more interested in Dumaka than in the fact that he was trespassing. A fact that Dumaka was starting to question the validity of.

With a tired exhale Dumaka considered how much he should disclose. Not everything, that would be unwise until he actually believed the young wolf wasn't going to harm him. "I come from the south. I was separated from my pack after we were hunted. I have been wandering on my own since," it was the truth yet not the full truth. He'd try to keep some things to himself. Such as the fact that he had been the pack's omega, which would explain his slighter build and lack of hunting prowess.

"And may I ask," Dumaka felt as if he was treading a line as he started to voice the question that had been waiting behind all his explanations, "your name in return?"

"I am Ralastor," he said, imperiously, and stared down at the "trespasser". Although he remained standing, some of the tension of uncertainty leaked from his posture, replaced by a quiet confidence. There was a pause, and then some of what Dumaka said began to sink in. "Hunted? By what?" Certainly there were things to fear as a pup, but nothing should be capable of hunting a pack of wolves. They were the predators, not the prey.

Something in the notion disturbed him, but Ralastor anticipated the explanation would reveal some sort of devastating war between a small pack and a much larger one. Surely it was just that he'd used the wrong word - what could stalk and eat a wolf aside from another wolf? He stopped himself from thinking about it. Fear over a distant, bizarre threat was stupid, and unbecoming.

Dumaka cocked his head quizzically. The young wolf, Ralastor, seemed to not understand. This caused several questions and notions to form in Dumaka's mind. How could he not know of the dangers? What made this land so safe that wolves were alone the only predators? Perhaps, and this was a more hesitant thought, this wolf was sheltered?

"Humans," Dumaka said slowly. "My pack was hunted by humans. We would only loose one or two members every now and then. Eventually we lost so many that breeding became... difficult," there was a trace amount of disgust in Dumaka's voice. He paused before continuing, "They do not hunt for pelts and meat in these parts?" It was a notion that was so foreign to Dumaka. Almost as foreign as he was in the Hinterlands.

[[I'm kind of laughing at this post because Dumaka still thinks that Ralastor is in a pack]]

Ralastor blinked, baffled. "Men who hunt wolves? I've never heard of such a thing." The place Dumaka came from must have been very strange indeed. Humans killed almost an entire pack? For - pelts? Ralastor had heard that man stole fur from other animals because he had none, but he'd always assumed it was a story invented to frighten pups. What other information was he completely lacking that every wolf was privy to? His education had been cut short, and perhaps this was the consequence.

"Regardless, the ones around here are tame. Some wolves consort with them. I personally do not." A dark thought crossed his mind, and he added, "There are other things in these lands to fear." Threat laced his tone. If Ralastor was not yet a force to be wary of, he certainly planned to one day be.

Dumaka did not miss the the underlying threat. "So this wolf has ambitions," he thought. "Tame humans?" He snorted at the thought. Dumaka had always considered humans to be selfish and beastly. The only time he ever saw a pack of humans was when they were fighting within themselves. they were nothing like wolves. "This is a far different land. I suppose that would make sense for being so far from it."

He was silent for a moment contemplating if he should push his luck and questions Ralastor further. With a little gulp he decided it was better to ask than forever be wondering. "The packs here, are they..." he searched for the right word, "hostile to each other." He expected that there would be rivalries and conflicts between the packs. However his understanding of the world had already been challenged today and he didn't much wish to press his luck.

A slow, smug smile slid across Ralastor's face, and he flicked his tattered ear absentmindedly. "There are tensions between some, friendships between others." A distant ambition prickled his skin, leaped from the tip of one bristled hair to the other, and something of it showed in his body language. "So I would be wary of whose lands you step into. While some are interested in new recruits," he said, eyes locked on Dumaka's face, "Others are interested only in repelling them."

Dumaka barely even noticed Ralastor's fur bristle as he unconsciously shifted his head to the side and cast his eyes down. A habit, something he had done all his life. Dumaka considered what the wolf said while briefly casting a sideways glance at him. "And which packs would be open to new members?" He asked slowly trying to suppress the interest in his voice. His hopes were raising rapidly despite Dumaka's best attempts to keep them in check.

((Right so... sorry it took to long to reply. School. I'm trying to make Dumaka have more wolf-like mannerism... from studying Atlas and Molly (my mom's dog) lol. I also suck at subtly so I'm not sure if I'm going over board with the whole omega thing.))

Time to stop beating around the bush he supposed. Ralastor took a moment to inspect this wolf, decide if he was worthy. Certainly he was no warrior, no masterful hunter - but he was an underling, and Ralastor needed to start somewhere. "Mine is," he said suddenly, making up his mind to take a chance on this cringing example of a wolf. "If you were willing swear loyalty to me."

((No worries! Happens to everyone. XD And you're doing great! I think it's fantastic that you're embracing the omega thing. It's not just about rank, it's about personality, and I think you've hit that nail right on the head.))

Dumaka's eyes shot straight to Ralastor's face scanning it for signs of insincerity. After a few seconds of postulating he felt the hope in his stomach bursting over the hunger pains. "I swear my loyalty to you," he said without much thought beyond lowering his head a little out of respect. Dumaka didn't regret how quickly he responded. If a wolf as aggressive as Ralastor was willing to admit him into his pack than Dumaka wasn't going to give him the time to reconsider. It wasn't in his best interest to be that generous at the moment.

A small and brief smile found its way to Dumaka's face. "A pack!" He thought. To Ralastor he asked "Is there anything in particular I should know about the pack?"
