Angela was sitting at one of the lab tables in the classroom, setting up the things she would need for today's class, which was on the basics of first aid.

The classroom itself was lit with only the ceiling lights, since the weather outside was not as nice as one might like, and Angela had drawn the blinds. There were clouds as far as the eye could see, and the forecast was calling for a bit of precipitation. At this time of year, it could go either way towards snow or rain.

Her student for today was Zyanya, and Angela didn't know how the teen would react to today's class. According to the notes, she hadn't been very thrilled about the last biology class she'd taken... but maybe something with more practical use would go better.

The praying mantis was in one of those moods, we could blame raging hormones of a teenage girl, or perhaps it was her monthly....either way she came into the classroom looking as if hell had come to visit her the night before.

Barely able to straighten herself up this morning her hair was semi tied up and her clothes a bit disheveled, one may assume she had a rough night with the boyfriend but alas it was not so. Cramps had been her reason for sleep deprivation and she was still suffering from the ghost pain.

Normally she'd be all high and mighty when she entered a classroom, her tolerance for adults was slim and she often picked fights with them. But today she was grim, quiet she barely was able to greet the teacher as she went to sit down happy to not be standing anymore.

"Morning..." She managed to mumble her dragon has slipped into the classroom with her, unsure about her current mood but having the sense to be around in case those pains she had described came back.

Angela looked up as Zyanya entered, and immediately got a look of concern on her face. She did not look well at all, as though she was hurting and hadn't gotten much sleep...

The teacher waited for her to sit down at the lab table, then nodded a greeting.

"Good morning... Excuse me for asking, but are you alright?" she wondered, concern coloring her voice. She hoped to not touch a nerve with the question. Teenagers could be so touchy and she wanted this class to go well, not be a fight to get finished.

She adjusted a few things on the table, which included an empty first aid kit, some printouts, and her laptop; there was a brown bag of things on one of the chairs to the side.

The girls eye's narrowed into a familiar look of mind your own business. But it didn't linger she only managed a dismissive wave before running it through her haphazard hair.

"Yes...I am fine." She managed to mumble before he light mint green eyes looked over the equipment that the woman had gathered together. Right first aid.

"got any strong painkillers in there?" She inquired jokingly though slightly wincing in discomfort as ghost pain reminded her it wasn't so funny hours before hand.

Angela sighed, and minded her own business, as that look clearly said. If it was something serious, hopefully Zyanya would tell her parent at least.

"Hm... nothing terribly strong, but I think I have some Advil in my purse," Angela said, tilting her head towards the desk at the front of the room. She rose and went to the drawer that contained her purse and found the bottle, returning to set it in front of Zyanya, then walked to get a paper cup from the dispenser in the back of the room and filled it water.

"Here you go, dear. I hope you're ready to pay attention, though," she added, not unkindly.

"Today we are going to learn basic first aid, and perhaps a bit more, if we have time. It's something that is good for everyone to learn, in case of accident, so that they don't do more harm than good with ignorance," she explained, and nodded firmly.

Despite herself she was relieved to receive the medication, she had been too proud at home to ask for it. Popping the top open she took a glance at the instructions before taking three pills and swallowing them. Putting the cap back on she place the bottle on the corner of her desk before looking at the teacher with half open eyes.

Until the medication worked she would most likely be in this state. "Hmmm yes first aid..." She mumbled, as it was something she should learn. After all it wasn't like her boyfriend and herself didn't get into scraps a bit of first aid would prove useful.

"Will I get to learn how to set bone fractures?" She asked more jokingly than she intended.

"Hmm," Angela responded, brows knitting for a second in thought. "We might be able to get to that," she said, "thought that's a bit more advanced than basic first aid. Since it is a request, however, I will try to fit it in, alright?"

"The first thing we are going to learn about is how to construct a good first aid kit, which everyone should have on hand. Now, putting together a first aid kit is important, but you should also check it regularly to make sure nothing in it has expired," she explained.

That said, she turned to the things she had next to the lab table, and pulled out an empty first aid kit, which she set within reach of Zyanya. Then she pulled out various things from the paper bag: a scarf, a few safety pins, a pencil, a pair of scissors, an ace bandage, a cold pack, paper tape, the aspirin bottle from earlier, band-aids, gauze, a sucker, a pillow, a stethoscope, latex gloves, and a few cotton swabs.

"Which of these things belongs in a first aid kit?" she asked. Most of them would be obvious, but making the decision for oneself cemented ideas in one's mind.

She had to admit that this beginning part was rather boring. A first aid kit? Really? But then again how would you be able to perform first aid if you didn't have it....seemed wussy though. She watched boredly as the woman brought out various objects and then instructed her to choose which ones should go in the first aid kit.

Not really in the mood to stand she dragged herself out of her chair and then moved over to the lap table. Glancing over it there were some things that made sense and a few that seemed dubious. But were these a trick she had to wonder.

Carefully she picked up the obvious things first, the safety pins, scissors, bandage, paper tape, cold pack, aspirin, band-aids, gauze the gloves and the cotton swaps all piled into the kit in a sure fashion. She then looked at the items that were left. Taking the pencil she tossed it it, as well the sucker. The scarf didn't make sense....if you had gauze why would you need the scarf? And a pillow seemed to bulky to carry around. the stethoscope...seemed unnecessary.

Looking up she waited to see if she was right or wrong in her choices.

Angela smiled and nodded. "Very good! The only thing that is questionable is the safety pins. Now that you know the things that should go in a first aid kit, we'll learn how to treat some basic wounds," she said, and packed away the things Zyanya had tossed to the side.

"These are the sorts of wounds that can be treated by you, without calling for medical assistance, or as preliminary treatment while waiting for medical help to arrive," Angela continued, then paused to think, nodding as she came to a decision.

The first thing the teacher went over was how to treat a puncture or other deep wound.

"The first thing to do is control the bleeding. You do this by applying pressure and raising the wound above the level of the head for about fifteen minutes. If you can't get it to stop, you'll need to call 911. Also, call 911 if the wound is very deep, or if it is in the abdomen, back, pelvis, thigh, or chest."

"Do you know why you shouldn't try to treat those wounds on your own?" she asked, looking for some feedback from Zyanya.

The young girl listened if...vaguely to her teacher explain that she would be learning how to treat wounds that she would or could deal with on her own. This normally would perk her interest, if she wasn't feeling so crummy. Instead she just watched the teacher gesture and speak before a question was being posed at her.

"Why?" She repeated before running the information back through her head. "Because there could be some risk? Like a punctured lung or somethin.." The mantis finally replied and though she knew there were other valuable organs the lungs were the only ones she could think of at the moment.

"Yes, exactly! By trying to treat it, you could unintentionally make it worse, since you can't see," Angela said, sounding pleased. Zyanya didn't seem very engaged, but given her condition, Angela was willing to cut the teen some slack. And she was giving good answers, so far.

"Well, then... for wounds that are small enough to treat yourself, after finishing applying pressure, you should gently wash the wound with antiseptic soap and warm water. If it bleeds again, reapply pressure until it stops," Angela said, then continued to explain how to care for the wound until it healed, by using ointment and bandages, and cleaning it daily.

"If the wound is wide enough, it may need stitches, which would require a doctor visit," the teacher continued, then added, "By width, I mean if the wound cannot be easily pulled closed, and would not heal correctly if left alone."

Angela thought for a moment, then nodded.

"There is one other type of danger from a puncture wound, especially those caused by metal or animals, or if they are on the feet. Can you tell me what that might be?" she asked, looking once more to Zyanya for feedback.
