It was a gloomy Moonday by the time the first of the boat assignments had come out. Though Halloween naturally had a dark disposition, a strange heavy atmosphere seemed to permeate in the esteemed Academy, affecting both teachers and students alike. No-one wanted to go on this field trip, or mostly no-one. Especially not faculty members, who could be seen walking up and down the hall like First Year ranks of the Undead.
Most students probably found the inconvenient letter tucked somewhere within their bag, their shirt, their minipet fish tank, basically wherever a gnome could reach. On the letter was a very short and brief notice: all students please go to the lecture hall for a pre-field trip boarding brief.
In all honesty, the lecture hall was just a fancy word for the auditorium, the same one that hosted the opening school year speech, and of course, the infamous Nightmare Before Christmas Revised play scandal (most students refused to talk about it the latter). At first, as the seats began filling up, students might have noticed that there was no-one on stage to, per se, actually talk about said contents of said field trip.
Ten minutes later as the seats were burgeoning with people (some students had resorted to small turf wars to see who could get the cushion of the chars versus the armrests), someone small, disgruntled, and of course, Always Unhappy, clambered onto the stage. There was a strange crashing noise before the lights on the stage turned on.
"All right, field trip orientation." If possible, the secretary, Arel's voice was more monotonous than usual. "Boat boarding begins tomorrow at seven o-clock AM, please board as early as you can to avoid being put into the barracks for a week of ...agony." There was very little emphasis in the agony, making the sentence in general sound slightly pleasant. "In addition, please check your boat assignments - the gnomes will be handing these out right now - to make sure you understand which boat to board. As mentioned in the last letter handed to you, the boats will respond to said corresponding staff members."
There was a moment of silence as the secretary flipped his own papers. "Lastly, we want to remind all students that all items deemed unsafe will be confiscated during the entire field trip. That means no minipets, no weapons - unless you're a reaper in which case please de-summon your weapon for the duration of the boat ride - and no alcoholic beverages or other illegal substances. If you are found with any of these, you will be forcefully ejected from the boat. In addition, you are allowed a small travel-sized luggage, which will be going through gnome customs, make it no bigger than two feet both ways." It was a good thing the boat assignment handouts were at least pretty entertaining, or half the auditorium would have experienced a late afternoon nap. "... I will see you students tomorrow. Or some of you."
There was no question or answer period, the secretary had simply exited back stage, with no return. The Boat Assignments Handout Boat 1

No minipets. No weapons... Those were things that the harpy, rather new to Amityville Academy could deal with. She had yet to become too attached to any of her pets (despite the feathered ones making things feel a little bit more like 'home') and she had no real need for weapons when at the drop of a feather (hahaha) she could revert to her 'natural' form that came with built-in weapons in the form of talons and claws. What she absolutely could not deal with was the restrictions set on their luggage.
"Small travel-sized luggage? Two feet? That... That can't be right. How is that right? How can we go on a trip completely unprepared?" The harpy was clearly distressed by this. Clearly. Distressed. So much so that she had yet to actually pay any attention to the list of people that she would be traveling with, or any of the other notes on her particular boat... Not that she actually knew any of the students yet, although it might actually benefit her to start getting to know them, luggage problems be damned.

While sitting in the demon common room with Sharra and his Freymon, Herbet, a gnome had darted up to stuff a paper between the two and running off once again before either teen could move to react. Of course with her legs slung comfortably over the nergal's lap, and Herbert nestled comfortably on her thighs, Yaya was slow to pluck the paper from between the couch cushions so she could read it. Immediately her features shifted, first into something bordering on panic, and then smoothing into all out dread. "Oh Jack."
Scooping the freymon up to cradle him against her chest, the marid removed her legs from her boilfriend's lap and turned to get to her feet, holding the paper out to him as she stood. "We'd better go." With that she bent to take hold of his human hand, tugging him up along with her so she could lead him off in the direction of the auditorium as he read the paper she'd just given him.

Alwine stared at the boat assignments, and more importantly the names on them.
No one. She knew no one that was on that boat. She pulled out a handkerchief and ran it over the edge of her neck, emulating a tear. She let out a wail that haunts were especially good at and buried her neck in the hair of her Samara Doll.
"This is going to be horrible... no Krumm Boat..."
Samara Doll didn't care. Samara Doll was happy that it wouldn't be on a stupid boat. She hated boats. No... she could sit on top of Alwine's TV while she was gone. The TV, the beautiful TV... all to herself.

Kasumi trotted up to the pre-boarding brief with a smile on her face and a pack on her back. She carried with her one of the papers stating to go to the lecture hall in her hand and chose a seat near to her friends, Belladonna and Junko. The onryo, truth be told, was incredibly excited about this prospect. She hadn't been out on a boat with anyone... ever, really, and had packed a small backpack with essentials - sandals, a bathing suit, a small parasol and a comb. She didn't know what the adventure held, but she secretly was relishing the fact that she was a ghost - she didn't need food, clean water, a change of clothes (unless she wanted it), and heck, she didn't even need sunblock! How nice was this? The prospect of a field trip was absolutely wonderful. She tried not to clap her hands in excitement because it was clear Miss Secretary and some of the other students didn't share her enthusiasm one bit.
The onryo picked up her boat assignment and went through the names. She didn't know a single one, but that was alright! New people were always interesting to meet, and a great many of them looked fun! Right?
Oh dear though, someone was crying! Kasumi turned around to see a young lady with her face buried in... buried in...
Oh em jay.
Kasumi tried her best not to seem like a total creeper, but the doll! The doll! The onryo scooted herself up to Alwine and suppressed her more creeper-ish tendencies because oh her Jacks and Skulls, the doll. "Excuse me, Miss? Where did you get that doll?"
+++
Carthusia sighed, walking into the lecture hall with as much grace as she could muster. She really didn't want to go on a field trip, but if she had to go, then she wanted to end up with Livius or someone else she knew. Or perhaps people she could get to know rather easily. She held up one of the fliers that was plastered to her door and frowned. Why did this have to happen now? She drug a hand through her hair and looked about for a place to sit. Boat assignments? And only one piece of luggage? The demon sat down in one of the cushy chairs and swung her leg over another, watching the boat assignment list make its way around.
Well, she knew Riley and LW! Oh and look, Greed was finally out and about. About time! She'd met all the other Sins at least in passing except him. He must've been the secretive type. Pride shook her head and frowned again. She wasn't with Livius? Drat, drat it all! She still had to prepare something semi-decent to show off her assets to those that were on the boat, but perhaps the boats would sail close enough together that she could communicate with her boilfriend and reaffirm their relationship to those on the boat that didn't know them.
Oh Livi, what would she do without you? Besides go crazy.

The first thing Ren said was "SEVEN in the MORNING?!" in a sort of strangled, horrified voice. This was followed closely by "No minipets?" in a vaguely pitiful, despondent tone this time. He stared up at the secretary on stage, feeling rather disturbed about the entire field trip (seeing as how the last time he had been on a field trip, he had wound up in the middle of a snowy hill shifting back and forth). Not to mention he was still stuck on the "7 AM" and "no minipets" comments. Who was supposed to keep him company now?
Taking the sheets of boat assignments from the gnome, Ren took one and passed the rest down the row, his eyes already scanning the paper to find his name. Mac, Efflo...aha! There he was, on the second boat. With Gabrian. Ren felt a swell of relief course through him, though it was short lived, seeing as how neither LW, Alessa, nor Jove was in his boat either. Ren glanced down the rest of the list until he found their names, all spread out. Dejectedly he returned to looking at his own boat.
Hmmm... He did not know most of them - actually, reading the names slowly, Ren realized he did not know any of them besides Gabrian. He blinked, tilting his head. Time to make some new friends, I guess, he thought, and shrugged.
And time to figure out how many pillows I can cram into a two foot bag...

Oh.
Oh my. Israfel's earwings fell back as the news came. No minipets. No alcohol. And he was going to be on a BOAT. A BOAT. This did not merit good things. It didn't merit happiness, nor, did it merit a song. He was a siren. A creature, a monster born with the legends of sinking sinks and drowning sailors with their voices. And now he was going to be IN one of the those...things?
Good jacking-
Shuddering, the siren pulled out the small vial he carried of hard cider. His emergency stash. Nope. No way. Drunk on a train was bad enough. But on a boat? with waves crashing and it moving in the water and yeahhhh...Not ideal. Also no minipets. setting aside the stash, he pulled out the toterror from it's jar. It growled, biting his finger. Thankfully, he was used to it. "Stop that." he hissed. Looking around, he gave the little thing the tiny vial of hard cider. "Go back to the dorms. I don't want to even be tempted."
The tiny toterror just opened the bottle and drank. End result. No more cider and one drunk toterror. Which Israfel sighed and just tossed into the darkness of the auditorium. Looking at the list he didn't really recognize a few names. Maybe he did? He knew Sin in passing, Mei from poker, Rain also in passing, Alcyone, Shine and Aksaja? The other had him clueless.

Mandy stared at her sheet.
And stared.
And stared....
It wasn't who she was with that had her staring, oh no she was quite fine with hers. It was Alwines. Reading all the names she found that she recognized no one. And judging by the wail coming a few seats away neither did Alwine. This was unacceptable.
Frowning at her sheet then at the retreating secretary she shoved her way over to Alwine, stepping on morebthan a few toes on her way.
Looking at the crying ghoul and apathetic doll she flopped onto the armrest next to them and gave Alwine a look.
"No dieing even more than you are. And you better keep in contact."
There. That's all she could do, it's not like the school would listen if she argued about boat assignments.

Efflo had tried to claim a small corner space for himself in the lecture hall, but it didn't matter. The masses poured in and filled every nook and cranny of the auditorium and the poor undead boy was starting to feel very... cramped. It took all his nerve not to kick out at the elbow jabbing in his side, or the awkward knee brushing against his. Pffft, monsters! he inwardly snorted. Moody on the best of days, the gloomy weather made the pony boy want to simply revel in his misery. He definitely didn't want to be jammed next to ghosts and goblins, listening to a lecture about a field trip he didn't even want to go on. He sighed, resignedly trying to tuck himself even smaller in his seat. He had already gone over the boat list, not that it mattered; Efflo didn't have very many friends. Well, any friends, actually. Kind of sad, but then again, it's Efflo. Apathetic depression is his middle name.
He listened to the requirements, and was likely to have the most lacklustre response in the room. His glowworms weren't technically a minipet... He needed them to survive! They were all he needed. The glowing zombie couldn't even think of enough things to pack to warrant bringing a suitcase. After all, how many moth-eaten and hole-filled breeches did one student need?
Not to mention he didn't even like having to wear pants... Horses don't wear pants!

The briefing did not please Jericho entirely, but not quite as much as it may have for others. The lack of having Gimbal around wasn't a huge problem, and if anything, it meant the Kobold could keep an eye on his room and treasures while he was away. Weapons was not an issue either. He could take on enemies with his body and fire breath if he needed to. Though... he supposed breathing fire on a boat would not be the greatest idea in general... He didn't need to pack much either, so that wasn't a problem.
What got him was that there really wasn't any information on where they were going.. again. He had some slight suspicions, due to previous events, but it would have been nice to be told something other than 'hey lets go on a field trip everyone!'.
Looking over the boat rosters, he recognized most of the names. There was really only one that didn't seem to strike any memories. The rest, he had met at least once at some point, or had at least seen them around. He was a little disappointed his best friend wouldn't be on the same boat, but there wasn't anything that could be done about it.
Frowning some at that thought, he went to seek out the others on his boat, as well as Riley. Surely they were around somewhere.

Alwine let go of the doll and let it slide to the floor before she hugged Mandy tightly. It was... a little odd to watch... but Alwine really was fond of the Drop Bear. She was one of her very first friends, and it was Mandy who taught her how to have a backbone in the first place.
"Deeeeee!!!" she wailed. "I'll text you constantly! Don't wreck the boat with your anger-- I'm sorry, that was rude! Oh Deeeee....!!"
Kasumi did not go unnoticed. Alwine held up a shaking bandaged finger as if to say 'One moment'.
Samara didn't have a moment. Kasumi... look at the floor, now back to the doll. Look at the floor again- there's a tape. Look at the tape, now back to the doll, now back to the tape-- look, it's in your hand.
"Ohhh, not now Dollie..." Alwine groaned while she reluctantly let Mandy go. "I'm sorry, that doll is... well..."
Alwine peered at the fellow ghost. She was familiar. She glanced at the doll on the floor and then back to Kasumi.
They were almost identical!!
"That videotape is where the dolls come from. It's cursed..."

Having stood too long in one particular spot and found a gnome stuffing a piece of paper into the back of her boot, Belladonna made sure to be there on time the next day to receive her boat assignment. She chose a seat next to Kasumi, kicking her feet in contentment as she waited for the announcement as to what boat she would be on. The speech Arel gave was less then inspiring and did nothing to quell the little snake of fear that was currently spiraling its way around her stomach. But when she was presented with a piece of paper, Belladonna quickly scanned it only to find her name almost instantly.
"BELLABONNA?!" She screeched, looking angrily toward the gnome who handed her the paper as though it was his fault her name had been misspelled. "And I'm not on a boat with Daisuke OR Kasumi or Junko or Chuppi or-- Well, there is Jericho... And I haven't met Amrita. Time to make friends!" The witch sang, jumping from her seat after bestowing a hug to Kasumi and Junko, one to Chuppi and giving Daisuke a good peck on the cheek accompanied with a dramatic, faux-tear filled hug.
"Nothing will be as epic as Krumm Car." Belladonna whispered to Alwine on her way out, feeling particularly caring and giving her a hug too. "But that's cause we were all pretty fantastic." With that she darted to her room where she somehow managed to pack only one small bag full of a change of clothes, one very flattering swimsuit (hello! Boat ride obviously meant swim-trip!) and as much non-perishable food she could wrangle from the vending machine as possible. Which wasn't much. She really hoped someone brought some bread...

Someone had mentioned that boat assignments were finally up. Then she'd found a letter about it in one of her school books (what the Jack?!) The monster dorms seemed to erupt with new excitement at the prospect of being paired on a boat with friends. LW felt the same and crossed her fingers for people she at least knew kinda sorta well. But she wouldn't complain too much if there was no one there familiar to her.
Prowling towards the lecture hall, LW felt a small bit of unease. What if she got stuck on a dangerous boat? Wasn't there a professor that liked to sink boats? She didn't know which of their teachers would be in charge of them. But it made her shoulders stiffen and tail thrash behind her as the she-wolf made her way to the hall.
Upon arriving, her tail thrashed a little more. It was crowded in here. Very crowded. Obviously, this hall had not been made to accommodate this many students. Frowning, LW started to slowly make her way through the throng of yapping and excited voices. One particular voice caught her attention above all the other chatter. And that was the direction she headed for.
LW found Ren slumped in his seat. So far, she hadn't found any open seats yet. And she didn't want to sit by herself or on someone she didn't know! Although the last time that happened...she got a best friend out of it. Snorting in amusement, LW slid over to her BFF and promptly used his lap has her seat. That was when she caught sight of the sheet he was scanning and the she-wolf stiffened. Oh no. Snagging it from him she found her name easily. And then just stared. And stared.
LW groaned and slumped against the gryphon. "This will be one hell of a boat ride." She muttered to him, glancing towards the stage to listen to their dear secretary. Privately, she was pleased that Alessa and Jove were paired together on a boat. Those were the two she worried about the most.
"And no minipets?!" LW gasped and clutched Ren's knee. "I'm doomed." At least she had Carry on her boat. And some faces she would know. But one name kept popping out to her. Sarias is on my boat.
