 The gentle rain pattered on the leaves of the trees they hid under. Behnam sighed, stretching his body and looking over at the female that laid next to him with love. She was perfect. So beautiful, so strong and healthy. He couldn't think of other females at the moment, not even the one that had taught him how to be a good lover in this very spot. "You truly make me believe in love at first sight," he told her, nuzzling her neck gently. "Koko, I know this is going too fast, but--" He had never thought he would find her this quickly. "I can't seem to stop myself," he finished, licking her ear playfully.

Koko chuckled, having thoroughly enjoyed herself. He had been her first lover in all the ways that mattered. The first male that she could honestly say had captured her -- mind, body and soul. She was thrilled. She was giggly. She felt the happiest she'd ever been in her young life, flying high on the wings of both freedom and love.
She batted at his mane playfully, peering into those pretty golden eyes that gleamed like molten sunshine. He was so handsome. A swift silent thanks was sent to the Gods as she watched this male, this wonderful male that thrilled her to her very core.
"Speak your thoughts," she whispered, burying her face in his mane.

"I look at you and I picture how strong and beautiful our cubs will be," he told her with a sweet smile. "Beautiful little girls that take after their mother, tough little boys that take after me. We will raise them to be kind and loving, accepting of anything that comes their way."
He smiled. "My mother will love you," he added. "She will brag on how her son has been blessed with such a wonderful mate, she will celebrate as much as I do when I announce that you are my beybanu--"

A cold chill started at the base of her neck and shook its way down her spine. That icy feeling spread throughout her heart wormed its way into her stomach. No. This could not be happening to her. This was not a blessing from the Gods. This was punishment! This was a betrayal!
He had LIED to her! Perhaps one only by his own omissions, but a lie nonetheless!
Slowly she backed away from him, her eyes dull and a grimace frozen to her face. Ears pinned back and claws instantly unsheathed. She would fight to the death. She had worked too hard and too long to find such blissful freedom. There would be no turning back now.
"You," she hissed, "you are a Pad?"

He looked at her blankly, his mind slowly taking in the change of atmosphere, the cold eyes that his beloved was giving him, the--the non-cuddling that was happening at the moment. There were no cries of joy, there were no comments on his imaginary beautiful cubs, just--just a question about whether he was a pad or not.
Her claws were unsheathed. That stunned him greatest of all. She wanted to hurt him? After what they had just experienced? After the consummation of their love?
"Koko?" he asked. "Honey, is there something wrong? I--I didn't think I had said something to offend you, but--"

At the moment Koko was certainly living up to her name -- 'wild eyes' -- pupils enlarged, a hopeless expression swiftly washing across her previously soft and loving features. No, how could this have happened? How could she have been this careless? And now he expected her to return to the pride she'd just escape, provide him with cubs, catch his food for him and be happy while doing so? While SHARING him with another female? Or two others?
No.
"Answer me!" she fairly shrieked, furious now. She backed away from Behnam. If he moved to touch her, to reach out towards her, it was obvious by her body language that she would strike.

"Koko, I think we need to take a moment to calm down," he said in his best calming tone. "Perhaps you could explain why you're so angry with the idea of me being a pad? Has one of them harmed you in some way? Have you been abused either physically or mentally--"
Obviously this wasn't going the way he expected it to. He was starting to get scared, too. If he said the wrong thing--did the wrong thing, she would attack him, but more importantly, she would leave him.
He wasn't sure he could handle being left by her. In fact, he was almost positive he wouldn't be able to. "Koko? Love?"

She was starting to see red. She really was. She'd just left that life behind and for a moment she'd allowed herself to feel just the slightest glimmer of hope. The slightest moment Koko had allowed herself to feel that everything was going to be okay. Behnam looked ... he looked terrified. He should be.
"I will not become my mother," she babbled, backing away from him. "I will not be any male's slave. I will not go back with you. I will not become my mother," she repeated the words over and over again. She felt broken. She'd given herself to this male, trusted him to take care of her, to be her knight in shining armor and now look! Just LOOK!!
He was a Pad, a male in a pride where his status was proven by the number of females he had, the heaps of children they provided him.
"You ARE a Pad!" This was wailed, a hopeless sound filled with despair. He hadn't denied it!

"But I never planned on making you a slave!" he said, still not denying it. "I was going to make you--I want to make you my Beybanu, my head female, the one that is always at my side--my beloved. Because I do love you. I've never felt like this in my life, Koko. Please," he begged, feeling like fool even as he did so. He was the son of a god. He was the son of the sultan's half sister, yet here he was pleading like a cub.
"Please, don't leave me, Koko. I love you." His heart was breaking because he knew, without doubt, that she would leave him regardless of what he said.

Koko shook her head. Her world was crumbling around her, shattering into pieces that then turned to dust. "You want me to clean your den, fill your belly, warm your side at night and provide you with cubs -- just as you would ask any female that you kept by your side. Beybanu," she spat the word, "my mother is Beybanu of her Pad's harem. She is nothing more than a slave," the final word was hissed at him.
"I will not go back with you, Behnam." She fell silent for a moment. She did love him -- only real and true love could have happened this fast. It was as if she were made for him. Perhaps... she brightened, dared step closer.
"Run away with me," she whispered, begged. Pleaded, "Run away with me and we can be together, just us, forever and always."

His heart broke. "I can't," he whispered. "I wish I could. I--I can't. Everyone I love, my father, my mother, my brothers and sisters--no. I'm sorry," he said, looking away. "I will always love you, though," he added softly. "Which is why I'm letting you go. Please... come back to me someday."

She could see how much this hurt him. It hurt her, too, seeing the pain in his eyes, pain she'd caused. She could go back with him... things would be different with him. She wouldn't be a lowly Banu. She'd have a title that she was worthy of. She didn't have to walk away from him now...
Lifting her jaw and fighting tears, she said nothing to him. Her actions spoke loud enough. She turned from him, the only male that had ever touched her heart this way, and she walked away, leaving him behind. It was the only thing she could do.
