Now that they have become a family, Aluino and Lain have decided that their current living arrangements are not safe enough for their children. They must take their children and journey out of the Firey Void to the grasslands in the east. This is the story of their brave journey forward.

Lain frantically collected all of the children together and gave a quick smile to comfort them. She had rehearsed many times with Aluino as to what to say to the children. "We can't stay here any more." She said bluntly. Lain took a deep breath and continued on, "So we're moving. It will be a long journey, but where we end up will be much safer than here. We'll move slow so everyone can keep up and you all can take turns riding on our backs."
Her eyes lighted up as she saw Aluino coming around the corner. "I've told them." Lain said, smiling.

Aluino came around the corner, returning home from a quick foraging trip. He nodded to Lain as he placed the food down in front of everyone. "Everyone needs to eat a quick breakfast now, before we start moving. We leave as soon as possible." He said softly. He handed out a portion of what he had foraged to each baby and Lain. He gave to himself the smallest portion.
Aluino saw scared faces amongst his children. He tried his best to calm them by saying, "The trip will be hard for all of us, but we will all make it. Have faith in yourselves and your family, and you will survive." He bent down to each one and gave them a quick but loving lick on the cheek.

Purcell's face was one of the frightened ones. One of the smallest of the children, he was often unsure and timid about new things. He picked at his breakfast for a bit before finally piping up. "I'm not sure how I feel about moving, Dad," he squeaked. "What if where we move isn't any good?" He could only vaguely comprehend the dangers of their current home and had no reason to think that a new place might be any safer. It would probably be a very far walk, too... and that itself might be dangerous! He trusted his parents, but at the same time, he couldn't help but to be a little fearful.

Aluino smiled at young Purcell. He patted his head affectionately and replied, "The grasslands in the east are a safe and wonderful place. It is where your mother and I met. I think it would be wonderful for you to all grow up there." He smiled at all of his children, trying his best to quell their fears. Aluino looked back to Purcell. "Do not worry young one, we'll protect you." He added.

Prella couldn't help but grin back at her father. She loved him so very much, she loved her whole family that way. But still, the thought of the journey ahead gnawed at her mind. She knew that being the youngest, her chances were lower than everyone else's.
Prella needed a plan to keep her safe. After a silent contemplation, an idea struck her. "Ah-ha!" She exclaimed with her mouth full. Bits of partially chewed food sprayed around her. Prella was immediately embarrassed, though she tried not to show it. "Sorry." She squeaked quietly.

Ruelli thought to himself, I'm not scared of anything! This will be easy. He knew his father needed all the help he could get, so he showed how confident he was. He puffed out his chest and grinned. "Yeah, you guys don't have to worry at all; I'll protect you!" He said.
Ruelli bared his teeth and began fighting an imaginary foe. He twisted and jumped, clawed and bit, slipped on a loose pebble and landed on his face. He tried to laugh it off, though he knew full well that he'd never hear the end of it from his siblings.

Aelwen remained silent as her parents spoke of what their family was to do. It was obvious to one so little as her that they had to move, the area was not safe for her and her siblings. She took her portion and nibbled at it lightly, not really hungry.

The young rat looked about her family, her gaze passing over each of them. She didn't share her brother, Purcell's voiced concerns but Aelwen did worry about the trip there. She chuckled at her younger sister's antics, adorable as always. There was some worry for Prella though, being the youngest. I'll just have to keep an eye on her then, thought Aelwen.

Then Ruelli puffed out his chest and claimed he was everyone's protector. Aelwen softly shook her head as her brother scrambled around only to fall on his face. She would have to keep an eye on him as well. Though she was the middle child, she felt a sense of responsibility taking care of her siblings.

Normally she wouldn't have said anything but as most of her siblings had already spoken up, she decided that she might as well voice her own opinion. "I'm ready."

Lain chuckled lightly at Prella and Ruelli. Then she gazed at her young Aelwen; she was so strong. "I hope that's true." She said, patting Aelwen on the head. Lain nibbled restlessly at her portion of the food, watching her children, wondering what each was thinking. They'll all make it, I just know it. She assured herself silently.
Lain called Aluino over and whispered to him. He nodded and she nodded back to him. The warm wind blew ashes down from the great mountain, where the firey liquid burned inside. Lain closed her eyes and pictured the cool wind rustling the tall green grasses of the east. None of her children had ever experienced the peace of that place, and she knew it was her job to give them the chance.

Purcell giggled at his brother's antics. "Well, with Mum and Dad and our big brother looking out for us, I'm sure we'll be ok." He nudged Prella, the only one of the family younger than him. "I guess maybe we're lucky now, with everybody looking after us." Dashing away, he sidled next to Ruelli. "When we go, can I walk with you, Big Brother?" He really looked up to the older male. He was beginning to get excited about the move. While he'd never seen the eastern grasslands, he expected that he could imagine them. He thought of big fields of tall, cool grass stretching as far as the eye could see. There'd be lots of places to play hide and seek, and tag, and every game!

Prella smiled lightly at Purcell, he was always one to say what he was thinking. That made him strong, stronger than her no doubt. She followed Purcell over to Ruelli. "Me too! I want to stay with you too!" She cried.
She didn't really look up to her brother as much as Purcell, but she knew that it increased her chances being around someone who knew what they were doing. Poor Prella, she actually believed in Ruelli being capable.

Ruelli grinned happily at his two younger siblings. "A'course you can!" He said, feeling like a king among peasants. He struck another scary fighter's pose and said, "I'll keep you both safe! Just follow me and do exactly as I do and you'll have nothin' to worry about." He glanced at his momma and she nodded to him. The full weight of the responsibility he had just accepted, had not yet hit him. Give it time though.

((Once Invader Tekk posts with the last baby Alaiya, we'll have the family begin their journey.))
