((Clarissa calls her parents by their first names as a show of disrespect, they are her biological parents))

Richard ValTrappe strolled casually into the castle that he had so graciously been invited to. Dressed in his finest suit, his short round stomach almost prevented him from getting through the entryway. Finally his lovely wife Vivian was able to step forward and give him a little shove, and he stepped into the dining hall, where the party was in full swing. Richard looked to the man who had invited them, the Duke of Adair. "Uh-hum, I am Richard ValTrappe. Pleased to make your acquaintance." Richard said, grasping Adair's open hand with his and shaking vigorously. "Clarissa, luve, go eat some caviar with your mummy or something. Leave duddy and Mister Adair to business." he said, shooing her away.

Vivian smiled warmly. Smile and wave, smile and wave. She knew her husband was all for the money, and would jump off a bridge for 10 Quid. She stayed silent for a reason, Richard warned her about making trivial mistakes, and she seemed to have a knack for making them. She turned to her daughter, slightly pushing her along to join the rest of the party.

Clarissa frowned. She didn't want to be here, she would much rather be at home, but of course she had to go to the stupid party with her parents. She glared at her father, then was dragged away by her mother to the snack table. "Vivian, you know I don't want to be here." she whispered to her mother, her voice full of contempt.

"And you know we would have left you home if we could." Her mother snapped in response.

Clarissa glared at the floor. Three days after getting her letter to Hogwarts, Richard and Vivian were already using it to their advantage. She was forced to attend, and in a dress no less, and in return she was allowed to attend Hogwarts next month. If she threw one of her hissy fits, or beat someone up, or caused a single cent to be lost due to her attitude, she would be confined to her room for the rest of the year, save for meals and keeping up appearances.

Kline shook the man’s hand. He waited as the women and her daughter left. He smiled. It wasn’t a friendly smile it was a smile that showed his idea. It was a perfect idea. He had seen some of the land that the ValTrappe family held in Scotland, and he had heard about the vast lands that were owned. “Richard… caa me kline. Ah hae a proposition fur ye.”
His eyes glittered with his plan. “Ah hae a son... ye hae a dochter … ”

Marc Clung to the edges of the room. His parents had dragged him down to the main dining hall. There was a table set and decorated. The lights were dim around the edges. His father had really pulled out all the stops. He sighed shifting his small book from hand to hand. The suit his mother had him wearing was of the finest quality. HE sighed. Moving carefully passed a few people he slid down to sit on the floor in a rather well lit corner.

“Noo richard, marc will be th' next duke ay adair. 'at woods make his guidwife a duchess. ” HE said this with a smirk. It was his main point as there weren’t but a few Scottish Dukes. “Bringin' th' families together woods make a huir uv a strang alliance. plus addin' a duchess tae yer family….will add mair prestige than ye can e'en imagine… aw Ah ask for… is some lain haur in scotland… an' a wee part ay yer property in canada.”

Richard's beady little eyes grew to the size of wagon wheels. "I belive that is a splendid idea, Kline." He patted Adair's back, chuckling at the thought of Clarissa reacting to this. Of course, Richard hated losing the land that brought them such nice profit, but of course he would jump at a chance for having his daughter connect the families. He decided it best to keep his daughter's little 'quirk' under wraps until the plans were finalized. "Howsabout you an' your wife and me an' my wife sit to discuss this over some dinner?"

Clarissa broke away from her mother around the long table set out with tiny samplings of very expensive food. Obviously this Adair man was rich, and wanted to flaunt it. She was reminded strongly of her father, and immediately felt repulsed. She grabbed a Shirley Temple and walked to the opposite end of the hall, away from her mother and father. She looked around, sipping her drink, looking at the partygoers. There seemed to be no other children at the party. She frowned, walking straight to the back corner of the hall, where an empty table sat, with a single orchid in a vase shaped like a large 'A'. How conceited can you be? Clarissa thought, focusing her thoughts on the flower, causing it to wilt. She laughed.

Clarissa sat at the table, looking around the party. Really, there was no reason for her to be here. Clarissa suddenly saw a boy about her age in the corner clostest to her, clutching a book. "What are you doing?" she said, trying to keep her tone happy.

Adair smiled. "Ah dae believe 'at is a grain idea." His voice called out across the hall. Sure it was rude to yell. But it was his hall and he was a 'barbaric Scott.' "Lora...Come meit mah new mukker richard valtrappe." He smirked as his wife,a lovely petite lady of demure stature made her way over and took her husbands arm. "Wa nae collect yer brammer guidwife an' we can gang fin' uir seats." He nodded and patted his wife's hand before taking their leave to the head table. "If a' fowk woods fin' their seats.... tatties an' neebs shaa be served." This announcement was made to the entire hall.

Marc stared up at the girl who had come to sit near him. He had pulled his nose from his book as she had approached. Now he was regretting it. "Uh....Ummmm.... " He frowned. His really didn't make friends easily... and the reason was because he couldn't get the nerve up to speak easily around girls... and boy's thought him weird. "Ah...Ummm... Ah am readin' a book...." He frowned as his father called out the announcement. "Guess thes is noo th' kids table." He sat on the other side of the table and looked up to watch the entire room follow suit to his father and follow him to sitting.

Adair waited until everyone had found a seat. He had purposely left the seat beside him and his wife empty for just in case he was in the middle of conversing with someone when the announcement was made. He waited a half second longer and then with flourish sat.

Richard smiled as Vivian sat next to him. He cut into some quail and began to fill her in on the current situation. "Vivian, Duke Adair has offered us an amazing offer. He has proposed a marriage between Clarissa and his son!"

Vivian's heart jumped. She was a smart woman, unlike her husband, and was already calculating the money they could gain. "What a wonderful idea~!" she said, just loud enough for Adair hear. Looking around, she saw Clarissa using her 'powers' to scare a boy she was sitting with.  Finally Clarissa was good for something more than scaring nannies.

Clarissa looked at the strange boy. "I guess it is." she said curtly. Socializing wasn't one of her favorite things to do, not by a long shot, especially with this weird boy. Being the cruel little girl she was, she decided to play a prank on him. Slowly focusing her magical ability to the flower once again, she caused it to stand up a little more and gain the color back, a very noticeable transformation. She anxiously awaited the reaction. Maybe he'll think he's crazy. She loved her magic, even if they were hated by her parents.

Lady Adair, Lora, Glanced up sharply. She really did love her son. She frowned at Adair however she didn't say anything outwardly objecting. She had heard arranged marriages could eventually work. She picked carefully at her own food.

Kline smiled at the mans wife. "Sae ye hink it is a guid idea tay?" He grinned. "'en we shaa annoonce it at th' end ay th' ceilidh(Party)..." He smirked. He didn't need to tell his son...His son knew his place. Glancing over he frowned. He could have sworn the flower was wilted just a moment before.

Kline was a muggle duke. He had learned about magic back when he married his wife however he had banned it from his home. His wife was going on 12 years of using very little to no magic. Until recently that is. His son had gotten a pretty little letter in the mail. And his wife had been thrilled.

Marc glanced at the flower and frowned. His mother had done something similar when he had gone to lunch to learn he was a freak. He was going to be shipped to some hidden school to learn magic... He had laughed and said that magic didn't exist. His mother had... Since they had gone into a 'magical' restaurant, pulled out her wand and mad the menu turn different colors. He glanced down at his book and shrugged.

"Ah..Ah...a'm Marcellus..." He chose to ignore her magic use. He could have just been seeing things. However, his mother had told him she was inviting some magic folks.

Adair took another bite of fish. He had always offered more than one food type to please all pallets. "Noo... efter th' annooncement richard... Ah will pull mah lawyer an' he shaa pull together th' pepper wark... it shooldnae tak' heem tay lang. but, abit terms... Ah hink in aw fairness, th' title ay duchess is equal tae a braw estate lain ower in canada, Ah dornt want onie type ay rin doon lain...." He carefully took another bite. "Ah also fancy 'at lot ay lain next tae th' eest border ay mah lain..." Lora was carefully silent.

Clarissa was surprised he did not react to the flower. "Clarissa." she said simply, still a little shocked he had not gotten scared or repulsed. She waved her hand over it, causing it to open and close it's petals. "C-can you do it too?" she asked, noding to the moving flower. She had only met two witch/wizards, her aunt and uncle, so if Marcellus was a wizard.... No, what were the odds?

Richard nodded vigerously. "Of course, of course." suddenly he realized that they would have to tell the Adairs about Clarissa's little.... Quirk. His face went very white. "Erm, Kline, now that everything is just about finalized, about Clarissa.... She can... Eh, well, you can look and see for yourself, she happens to be doing it now." he motioned in the direction of the table where she was sitting, where she had her hand suspended over the moving flower. Richard shoveled more quail into his mouth.

Kline turned to look at Clarissa and Marc. He frowned instantly weighing the positives and negatives... His son was already "Magical" And that.... while he disliked it... wasn't a reason to give up the rights to lands... "Braw... but coz ay 'at Ah want 'er dowry tae include th' far green forest tay." He wasn't stupid.... He knew he could make extra on it. Glancing to the kids again he nodded and took a bite of the fish.

Marc frowned and reached up to move her hand back to the table. "No..." He frowned and glanced at his father. His father had that look on his face... the one that said that Marc was going to get something bad... He shook his head. Glancing at the table he opened his book and started reading, he didn't mean to be rude, but he didn't want to draw any attention to their table.

Clarissa glared at the boy. If she didn't want to go to Hogwarts, she would be punching him for stopping her. But she very much wanted to go, and instead forced the flower to wither once more. She turned to the table where her father and mother sat, sipping her shirley temple, thrying to figure out why they were talking to the duke and what they had to give to get to sit next to him.

Richard frowned. Of course, his freak of a brother had to go messing up his deal. "O-of course." he said, looking down at his quail, which was nothing more than bones now. Clarissa, you are messing things up without even doing anything. he thought, lightly placing some fish on his plate.

Marc flipped the page to his book. He was reading about the animals in Africa, now. Lions and Giraffes. He wondered if he asked, he wondered if his father would let him go. He looked quickly up at Clarissa. She was glowering. He didn't care, well, he did, but he couldn't. If she upset his dad it would be his mother paying for it later. He glanced at his father who was looking as proud as a peacock. He frowned and flipped another page. Keeping his eyes on his book he spoke softly. "My dad doesn't like magic...He wont show it in public... but he gets super angry."

Adair smiled as he finished of his food. He spoke slightly louder so that his lawyer, a few seats away, could hear him "Randolf, mah guid cheil, can Ah ned a bit ofyoor time tae draw up a legal document fur me an' mr. valtrappe, haur?" The whispy looking man glanced up and nodded. Adair smiled in response and took his goblet of wine and stood. "Mah friends an' neighbors!" He lifted his goblet. "Ah woods loch tae make a toest tae th' newly foond agreement atween th' Adair estate an' th' ValTrappe fowk." He smiled. "Mah son, Marcellus, heir tae th' dukedom, will be wed tae th' valtrappe's dochter, Clarissa, oan 'er 18th birthday." He raised his glass higher. The crowd all shouted a hearty "Here, here." And it was then official.

Adair turned to smile at Richard. "Ah need tae gab tae some fowk, but enjoy yer tatties an' neebs an' efter th' ceilidh, ye main ask th' butler tae shaw ye tae mah office whaur randolf will nae doobt hae th' papers ready tae sign." he motioned to the lawyers empty seat. A few dollars in the lawyers greedy paws made documents come with rapid speed. "We can discuss th' finer points in thaur whaur it is whieest.(quiet)"

"Nae..." Marc was staring at the head table. He couldn't believe it. Just like that his father had planned the rest of his life... sold him in a sense. He was staring his mouth hanging open to catch flies... He just kept repeating the same word over and over. "Nae..." How ever his voice was so quiet he could barely hear himself. Then it occurred to him, Clarissa was being dragged down with him. He glanced at her. "Ah am sae sorry."
PostPosted: Wed Mar 02, 2011 2:47 pm

"Of course. Just because they don't understand it, doesn't mean it's a plague. But they still hate it." Clarissa watched her father. He had that look in his eyes, it looked as if he had gotten something he wanted... "He's planning something..." she muttered. Clarissa hoped it was land, maybe in New Zealand. New Zealand is a nice place to visit.

Richard lifted his wine. "Hear hear!" he smiled at Clarissa. There is nothing you can to about this. he thought. You brought it on yourself. He looked at his wife, who was smiling and waving at people they knew. This was a wonderful choice, and Clarissa throwing a hissy fit wouldn't change anything.

Clarissa started to laugh at first, thinking it was a joke, or he was drunk. Her brain simply was refusing the news. She slowly came to realize that it wasn't a joke, and this was basically her life. Plotted out for her. "Oh, someone is about to become very, very sorry." she said, literally shaking with anger. Leave it to her parents to sell her like livestock. She thought of Hogwarts. She desperately wanted to go, but someone was going to pay for this. Without meaning to, she caused the flower to light with flames, like a candle.

Marc shook himself from his awestruck face. He glanced over at Clarissa as she spoke. And then like a candle, the flower lit up. He, in one swift movement, doused the flower with his ice water. He shook his head. Well... It was still 7 years away... right? He glanced at his betrothed. Well. At least she wasn't butt ugly... He stood. "Come on..." His accent was completely gone in this moment. "Lets go talk to my dad... there has to be some mistake...We can wait for him in his office."

Adair simply wandered away from the head table and in to the crowd.

Clarissa frowned. "No, if my father agreed to to it, it's done. He's stubborn as a mule." She stood, looking at her father with contempt, how dare he make a decision so serious without asking her. She looked at Marcellus, wondering where the scottish accent had gone. He now had an english accent, similar to hers. "You can try, but my family isn't going to let go of their end of the deal. Obviously they got something they wanted, they've probably already signed a contract." Clarissa, ever the bold little one, walked over to the duke, curtsying and speaking softly. "In all respect sir, I am sure that joke is hilarious, but sadly I do not see the humor in it. Would you mind explaining it to me?" Clarissa smiled up at the man. Surely he would not hate her for her magic?

Marc seriously considered gagging the little spitfire. He watched her go. So much for we. He rolled his eyes and grabbed his book. Heading in his finery back toward the office. He had no reason to stay at the party. Not now that he was to be married off.

The duke of Adair looked down his nose to the little girl. "Aam sorry hen... thaur is nae joke... however..." He knelt down in front of her. "Ye ur gonnae be a duchess...isnae 'at wonderful." While he disliked magic... He liked land and wealth more... HE patted her shoulder and then simply walked away calling over his shoulder. "Marc is a guid loon... ye will loch heem..."

Marc was leaning in the door way. He could already tell that his intended had some anger issues. He frowned. "Clarissa... " He didn't really want anything else to spontaneously catch on fire. "We have time... we can figure something out."
