Leandar laid atop one of the many perfectly crafted dunes for which Hallowmarl was famous. It was getting later on in the day, and the sun was making it's journey toward the west. His eyes moved nimbly back and forth across the pages. The book cover was made of leather, and it was held closed by a length of rope. Leandar nodded his head as he finished the book, "Why didn't I think of that," he asked introspectively, dumbfounded as the words disappeared from the page. The wildcat stood up and dusted his fur off. I wonder where Kobold and Marceline are.... Leandar stroked his chin, it was time for the trios daily desert patrol.

Elsewhere in the Hallowmarl Desert....

Rhys' head hurt a little and at first he wasn't sure why. It wasn't until he tried to sit up that he realized something was off. He wasn't in a place that he recognized, oh and the being tired up part, that was definately a sign that things were not right.

The last thing he remember was walking back from Mossflower after their trip. They had reached the desert and Rhys had started getting on Trix's case about being more careful where she walked after she tripped herself up for the second or third time. She had turn to look at him, probably snap back and... that was it.

"Rhys? You up," a small voice came from the other side of the little room that they were being kept in, recognizable as his little mouse companion. "Guess being safe didn't help huh?"

Rhys scowled a bit at her last comment before doing his best to sit himself up so that he could look at her. "What happened?"

She was sitting on the other side of the room and wasn't moving all that much. He could only assume that meant that she had been tied up too because otherwise she would be moving every where. "A couple of big guys came up behind you and one of them hit you. I tried to help, but there were too many of them," she explained and some of the nervousness showed through in her voice. To her credit though she was holding herself really well. "Rhys, I think we're in trouble..."

"No kidding."

"Come along, my wayward apprentice," the cat said, striding a few steps ahead of the squirrel. "We're almost to the meetin' point. Best not to keep the others waitin', what!"

Resolutely, Finn did his best to keep up. This was the first time he'd been taken out on patrol. He wanted very much to show that he was ready. He'd packed a waterskin and a wide piece of bark to use as a shade for his eyes if he needed one. Marcelline had laughed, but you could never be too prepared.

The pair rounded a sand dune, where they could see from a distance the sillhouette of another cat. Marcelline halooed, then took Finn by the paw and climbed the hill with him.

"Well 'allo, Leandar! Kobold ain't 'ere yet? 'S fine, we were just afraid we'd be late. Got somebody I should introduce you to. This is Finn, my apprentice. He an' his two brothers are orphans, recently moved to Hallowmarl, and this 'un wants to learn about bein' a hero!"

Finn nodded in response. At first, he'd been... reticent, to say the least, about this whole hero business. He'd spent his early days heckling his teacher and generally being a nuisance, but once she got him working, well, then things weren't so bad. The training was fairly fun, and he liked the idea of being one of the biggest, baddest good guys around. It gave him something to brag about to his brothers.

"I'm Finn, sah!" he said, sticking out a paw to the other cat. "'S nice to meetcha!"

User ImageRoland was definitely more prepared for the desert this time around. He had gotten lucky by finding Amelia and her 'Amazing Trunk', which he had actually had quite a bit of fun with. Getting up in front of all of those critters and acting out his part of the story had put him in a great mood and filled him with a sense of accomplishment and pride. Not only that, but now he had a pair of goggles and a scarf to help him withstand the harsh terrain. He would find someone this time and figure out where everyone else was. Maybe he'd find a group of someones.

Or, perhaps, they would find him.

Roland had been staring up at the sky, admiring how clean it was rather than focusing on how hot the sun was, when a group of critters seemed to appear out of no where. He didn't notice until he bumped straight into one. He quickly took a step back and looked up at the older and taller critter, saying, "Oh, sorry," and then, "H-Hi..." as he looked around at the others on either side of him. He leaned to one side to look past the one in front of him with a confused expression as he said, "Where did you come from?"

All he heard was a, "You'll see," before feeling a sharp pain to the back of his head. It wasn't long before everything grew blurry and faded to black.

He had passed out... again.

Leandar grinned as he spotted two silhouettes coming around a sand dune; one of them he recognized, Marceline, Hallowmarl Court's Brawler. A fitting title indeed, because Leandar and Marceline's first encounter was during a brawl. The wildcat began walking forward, all four paws on the ground, in order to meet Marceline and her companion.

"Hey there! I haven't seen Kobolt in quite sometime actually, but there's some important bus-..." Leandar stopped abruptly, looking down at young Finn. "Hello youngster, we could use your help today, you can play a key role in today's mission." Without a scout, it would be difficult to function, although Finn lacked Kobold's knowledge; he could make up for it by being overlooked, who would suspect young Finn of being apart of the Hallowmarl Court? "...That is if your up for it." Leandar looked down upon the boy, his carefree disposition evident in his gaze.

"This has become a more than run of the mill patrol, it's more serious than that Marceline," he said casual despite the gravity of his words.

Finn nodded eagerly. "Sure thing, sah!" he chirruped. "Finn the Fierce can do anythin'!" He thumped the stick he used as a club on the ground. Marceline had to smile at the little goofball.

"He's been trainin' hard, Leandar; he won't let us down. " As reticent as she could be about praise, she really was proud of her apprentice and his progress. She ruffled his ears. "He might not look it, but he's one of the fastest little things I've ever met." Finn beamed, but stopped smiling when he saw his teacher's reaction to Leandar's news.

Marceline did not like that there had been developments. Nosiree. In her mind, the best patrols were patrols where nobody was in trouble. Serious? Serious meant that somebody was in trouble. "What's going down?" Her smile faded a little. "What's happened? And, more importantly- who's it happened to?"

Leandar smiled at Finn, who was brandishing his makeshift club at the moment. "Finn the Fierce... has a nice ring to it." The wildcat ruffled Marceline's apprentices fur a bit, before turning his gaze upon Marceline. "Reports have come in about a mysterious group of bandits, who have been sighted kidnapping kids in Hallowmarl." Leandar pointed to the west, "their stronghold is that way, I'll fill you in along the way." The wildcat began taking footsteps in the general direction of the stronghold, fingers fiddling with his feather cloak. A smirk appeared on his face. "Hey Finn... Did you know this cloak allows me to fly," he said, suppressing his laughter all the while.

Finn's eyes widened and his face fell. "Kids? Do you, uh, do you know what kind of kids? I, uh... I haven't seen my brothers in a few days. I mean, we don't see each other every day, but what if..."

"Aw, Finn, I'm sure Tuck and Rhys are just fine," Marceline said, patting his shoulder. "Those two'd give bandits more trouble than they could handle." Although it was terrible, she'd breathed a sigh of relief when she heard that it was bandits. Bandits? Those she could handle. She'd been afraid that it was the Harrowgate squirrels again. She couldn't allow Finn to be exposed to that. "Now, let's have a look-see at that 'flying' cloak."

At this, the little squirrel paid attention to Leandar's cloak. He was still worried about the potentiality of his brothers being in trouble, but it was a pretty fabulous cloak. "A flyin' cloak, sah? Will it get us to them bandits faster?" He gripped the club. Kidnappers, to a child, were a terrifying thought. Finn was resolved not to be scared, though. No, he was going to be mad about it. He'd wallop at least one of 'em, just to show 'em that kids weren't somethin' to just take!

So there has to be a way out of this, Rhys thinks to himself as he does another scan of the room. He doesn't know what the animals that jumped them want with him of Trix but he figures in can't be anything good really and he wasn't about to let himself get eaten or anything worse after he had only been out in the world for such a short time.

The first thing they needed to do was get free he knew. "Trix, can you move?"

"I don't..." she trailed off as she made an attempt to get up. It was hard without the use of her hands but she twist and managed it, wobbling a little and almost falling over again. "There, you have a plan?"

"I always do"

While Roland was unconscious, he was tied up by one of the bandits and then picked up and carried as if he were simply a larger than normal bag rather than a young, and now injured, critter. Before long, the bandits were back at their hideout. The one that had been carrying him tossed him toward the other two kidnapped critters, obviously not caring if he was injured further.

Somehow, the pain brought him back to and he groaned, but stayed as he was, not yet opening his eyes to notice the others. Instead, he laid there willing the headache that he had to go away so that he could think, but it wasn't leaving. He also had a pain in his wing from being thrown, but he wasn't too worried about that since he didn't use his wings as often as other birds. Plus the fact that his wings were being held close to his body with rope, so he couldn't really use them anyway. If he could get up onto his feet, that wouldn't be too much of a problem, but he wasn't sure he could get up. He opened his eyes, hoping to see if there was anything around that could help and finding two other young critters who were also tied up. His eyes grew wide when he saw this and then slightly wider when he realized that he knew them. Well, he knew of them at least. They had lived at Zephra's when he was there. He'd also seen them in Mossflower at Bale and Amelia's show. He had no idea that they lived in Hallowmarl, though. Wait, did they? Maybe they were on their way to Sunhedge like Tabitha had been. For a moment, he forgot about their situation as he thought about this, wondering where they actually lived and if they knew the way to where people in Hallowmarl lived. If so, maybe he would find a place to live this time.

Leandar stopped mid-stride and looked to the sky, his eyes closed, arms raised straight up in the air. He counted to ten in his head before opening his eyes, and saying "just kidding." The wildcat wouldn't say much else after a slight chuckle, making haste through the vast sea of hot sand. Stopping for a moment, Leandar paused to eye the landscape. Walking a few steps, he picked up a hollow rock that was an entrance to the hollow. "At the bottom of this pathway is two tunnels, one to the right and the other down the center. You and Finn go down first, and head to the left. The walls that the tunnel share are thin, just holler if you find something."

The world stood still for a moment when Rhys and Trix heard someone coming. Rhys tried to calm himself, remind himself that they were doing nothing suspicious really but he knew that if they were to get caught at all that it would be all over. To her credit Trix remained frozen too, which was much easier now that she had her feet on the ground and her tail out. The big lug that came and tossed the bird into their little holding room didn't seem to cast a second glance at the two that were already there.

They waited a moment until they heard that one of their captors walk away before either of them moved, Rhys letting out a sigh of relief and Trix looking over at the new addition to their predicament.

"Rhys, its a bird," Trix said as she looked over him. He looked familiar, though she wasn't really sure where she had seen him before (probably the orphanage, it wasn't like she had ever gone a lot of other places). "He's tied up too."

"That's great Trix, now come over here," while the mouse had some concern in her voice for the bird, Rhys didn't really even cast a look his way. Other things were on his mind right now.
