She'd gone to sleep at the roots of a tree the previous night, lulled by its murmurings, and had woken up to the same. The voice of this tree was soft, wavering, and rippling, like the water that lapped at its roots, and she had to strain to hear it.

So she pressed up against its side, one ear pressed to the bark, struggling to make out the meaning of its whispered omens and prophecies. There was magic in these places, in the voices of the Swamp, and all she had to do was make sense of it.

"Find anything interesting, Rook?"
Havemercy called after her elder mongoose as he skittered along in front of her, searching for anything unusual or out-of-the-ordinary in the swamp that could interest his adventuresome master. "I hope we come across something soon," she murmured more quietly to the younger mongoose who was perched with her front paws atop Havemercy's head, keeping lookout. "These past few days have been downright boring, haven't they, Pawn?" The little mongoose chittered back in agreement.

Just as the doe was beginning to worry about him, Rook made a surprised sound from somewhere ahead of them, and Pawn called back. Have sped up a bit, trotting toward the sounds her mongoose made as he and his daughter called back and forth to each other. "What is it, Rook?" she asked excitedly as she burst into a clearing and saw the red of her mongoose up ahead. "Did you find something interesting?"

Have froze and rose an eyebrow at the sight in front of her. There was Rook alright, sitting in the middle of the forest and chittering at a black and cream-colored doe who, as far as Have could tell, was lying next to a tree with her ear pressed up to its trunk. Well. That was certainly...interesting, if not exactly what she had in mind. "Um...hello?" she ventured, taking a few more steps into the clearing and stopping next to Rook, who climbed up to his usual place on her back. "What are you doing?"

Whispering Rock had been just about to make out the words, pressing even closer, when suddenly some chittering interrupted her. She hissed and pulled away, glaring at the mongoose. Silly creature, interrupting her listening.

"Hush," she snapped at the mongoose, flicking an ear in annoyance. What did a mongoose know about the secrets and mysteries of the Swamp?

Her attention shifted next to a red doe -- the mongoose's owner, she supposed. With a sigh, she climbed to her feet. "I was listening to the Swamp speak."

She was always crankiest when she'd been interrupted.

Rook scrambled back up onto his master's back when the unknown doe hissed at him, chattering at her as if he was flinging insults. "Hush, Rook," Havemercy muttered to him, flicking her tail in his general direction. "Be nice."

She took a few steps forward into the glade, tilting her head at the doe's curious response. "You can hear the swamp?" she asked, a little incredulous at the doe's abilities but still willing to listen. "I'm sorry we interrupted you."

Whispering Rock hissed at the mongoose again, annoyed by its chatter. "Yes. It's there to hear for anyone who'll listen for it." But she seemed mollified by the apology. "Yes, well. That's alright. It's still going -- always going. Can't you hear it? Murmuring like willows in the wind."

She tilted her head to press an ear to the bark again, listening. "Whispering and rippling." Although she was decidedly -- odd -- she didn't seem inclined to hold a grudge, at least.

Havemercy shushed the chittering mongeese on her back and took a few more steps towards the strange doe. "No, I can't hear it," she replied, tilting her head in curiosity. "It sounds like it must be beautiful, though." Have looked around herself at the swamp, a little jealous that the other doe was so in tune with the magical place that was their home. "What...what does it say?"

"I don't know. That's why I'm listening -- I want to know. I must know." Whispering Rock huffed out an amused noise. "You have to listen. Put your ear right up against a tree, or a rock. Still your mind and open your ears, and the Swamp will speak when it's ready."

She paced a quick circle, and cocked her head at the red doe. "Your name -- what is it?"

Havemercy wasn't sure she would be able to hear the swamp saying anything even if she someday found the patience to sit still and listen to it. But that didn't make her less appreciative of this doe's attempts. There were plenty more things in the world that were less believable than the swamp talking to one of her children through rocks and trees.

A little surprised at the doe's sudden question, Have took a moment to answer. "Oh! Sorry, I'm Havemercy. It's good to meet you."
