Hazel heard the cry of the brightly-colored rabbit and his little mouse friend. The little mouse looked friendly so she wandered over. A trunk of pure amazingness? Hazel didn't have the slightest idea what that was, but it sounded nice. Looking around to make sure there were no other children waiting already, Hazel stepped up to the trunk and peered in.

A dazzling array of colors and textures greeted her. Wide-eyed, she rummaged through the trunk and pulled out various things that caught her eye. A flowered headband, a floppy-brimmed hat with a wooden bumblebee on it, a scratchy red scarf. None of those seemed right. Hazel frowned softly. She didn't want to insult the generous rabbit and mouse friend by declining, but she didn't think anything here was for her, necessarily. But, just to be sure, Hazel poked around in the bottom of the trunk a little longer.

And then she found it. A little white bonnet, just her size! And it had little leaves embroidered on it, just the color of her eyes! With little strings that could tie below her chin. Enchanted, Hazel tried it on. Hm, there were no spots for her ears to stick through, but she was sure she could find a way to cut the fabric just enough to let her ears through. Oh, and it came over her forehead to shield her eyes from the sun! Giggling ecstatically, Hazel turned to the little mouse friend for approval.

Another market day, and as usual Mossflower was a bustle of exciting activity. The little ferret trotted down the rows of creatures vending this and that, stopping to admire the colorful things that often attract youngsters. Life was good. As usual, Lir had let him go off on his own for a while after helping set up their own area and sell a few things. Lir was cool like that, he didn't mind if Zander went off and explored on his own a little. The little ferret liked it a lot, and he did his best to keep out of trouble.

Zander heard the barking for the show almost right away. He'd seen the colorful rabbit once or twice around Mossflower, and he had always wanted to see what the colorful fellow was about. As he heard the hullaboo and saw the gradually growing crowd of kids, he hurried over to take a look, hitching his satchel further up on his shoulder, a small beat up mandolin strapped to his back. Wow! A chance to join the show! This was just too good an opportunity to pass up, so Zander carefully forged his way through the wandering beasts and up to the stage, grinning with delight. "We can pick anything from the trunk?" he asked, maybe just a -bit- shy.

He looked into the trunk, and was swept away by something he saw almost immediately. It was a cape and a matching half-mask, like something you might wear to a costume party. The cape was a deep blue on the back, and covered in shiny silver stars of varying sizes and the inside with trimmed with shimmering silver fabric. It reached down to about his tail, the perfect length, long enough to swoosh around, but not so long that it would drag or trip him up. The mask was just as neat, covering his nose and one eye. It was that same dark blue, with wild black and white feathers glued to the edge of the face, and some silvery stars here and there on the mask itself. "Wow! This is awesome!" he cried, and let out a giddy laugh as he tried it on.

Ooo! Another show…Fun!” Newt wiggled a bit and tugged Abeya’s arm, “Can I go see the show?” As was usually the case when Newt should enthusiasm for something, Abeya allowed him to, seeing it as positive evidence that he was finally coming out of his shell. He ran over there excitedly, bouncing a bit as he waited his turn to dig through the trunk, “Amazingness!? I can’t wait to look inside!” Once it was his turn he scooted up the trunk and wiggled his paws before grabbing the first thing he saw: a sombrero! He laughed at himself as he looked a bit more, pulling on some big clunky boots. Well this isn’t much of a costume, is it? Needs something more. He went back into the trunk and rummaged a bit more. Aha! Newt turned around to Abeya, who was standing just a little ways off, arms out in a triumphant pose. It was all she could do to not burst out laughing right there, “Newt! I don’t think daisies suit you!” The little mouse looked down at himself and began to laugh. It was true, a chiffon dress printed with big, brightly colored daisies really did not suit him.

After a good laugh, he took everything off and started from scratch. This time he found a beautiful red velvet waistcoat with three big, shiny black & silver buttons. He paired it with a silky black sash that had fun tassels on the ends, which he tied around his waist. He decided that what would best complete this ensemble would be a hat, a magnificent hat! And that’s exactly what he found: A royal blue fez with a black tassel. “Perfect!” He announced as he plopped it onto his head. It was just the right size too, it fit right on the top of his head and his big ears helped keep it in place. He smiled gleefully and turned to get the approval of both Bale and Abeya before sitting down and awaiting what happened next.

Finn ran through Mossflower while his guardian was off being boring and trying on shoes. He darted around, looking to see if anything interesting was happening- maybe some merchant was giving free samples, or two people were having a bugfight with some beetles. But nothing caught his ear quite like the familiar voice of Bale the rabbit, one of the forest's most famous performers. He'd seen Bale's shows before here in Mossflower, and they'd always been good. But a show that he could be in? That sounded fantastic! He quickly moseyed over to where Bale and a young mouse were touting the costume bits in a giant trunk. That was all the encouragement the little squirrel needed. He dove right in, admiring the pieces that other kids had found.

What was best in this trunk for him? A really cool hunter green vest with silver bits embroidered on it- ooh, that was neat! And then a fantastic silvery cloak that looked as if it was meant to go with the vest- yes, that would be nice, too. But... something was missing. Digging past hats, skirts, scarves, ties, dresses, and jackets, he looked for the piece that would complete his costume. He was developing a character in his head, a dramatic villain who flounced around, but it would be no good if he didn't have the right costumery...

And then there it was.

A glorious fake moustache. What was this even doing in a girl's dressup trunk? It was a sandy brown color and looked as though it was made of real hair. Creepy... but kind of cool. It had a little clip that secured it right under his nose and the back was slightly gummy to help it move with his speech. Clearly this was the greatest advancement in disguise that there had ever been. He pressed it to his face and grinned. Stomping around, he gave an experimental villainous laugh. This moustache needed to be his. The rest of his ensemble was wonderful, too, but there was just something about the moustache that made it the best thing ever. It completed him. Turning to a nearby ferret, he practiced making faces that put the focus on his new facial hair. "Oi, how do I look?" he asked.

Tuck chuckled as he wandered Mossflower. His guardian was in a foul mood caused, of course, by him. She'd told him to disappear and that she didn't want to see him again until sunset. Which was what Tuck had wanted! He was free for the day!! Now... what to do? He'd already gotten into a bit of trouble with a ferret. (It hadn't been his fault! He had been watching where he was going! That stupid ferret hadn't been and blamed him for running into him!)

Just then, he heard the loud calls of a certain rabbit. The young squirrel slowed down and peered over towards where the sounds were coming from. Well, it would certainly be worth looking at, right? As he got closer, his interest was piqued. A show? And he got to put on a costume? WHERE DID HE SIGN UP?!

Eagerly, Tuck ran forward, practically diving into the trunk to find something to wear. Hmmm. This was too frilly. That was too pink. Too black. Too scratchy. Items were grabbed and discarded quickly until his paws fell upon the most wonderful thing. It was red and green plaid and soft! He gently pulled the rest of it out from under a feather boa to examine it.

It. Was. PERFECT! Grinning from ear to ear, Tuck put on the kilt, carefully arranging the sash over one shoulder. His tail twitched with delight. He was ready for the show now!

At that moment, Finn stopped caring about the little ferret's opinion. His villainous heart leaped in his chest- not that he'd ever admit that, mind you- as a familiar flash of red fur came into view. As his brother fitted some plaid fabric around himself, Finn got a running start. "Tuck!" he shouted, tacking the be-kilted squirrel. He hadn't expected to get to see one of his brothers so soon! "I shoulda known you'd pick a skirt. Where ya been, Tuck?"

Zander was still admiring himself when he realized that someone was addressing him. Turning to see that it was a squirrel, and a rather familiar-looking one at that, he took a look at the other kid's costume and suppressed an amused laugh. "You look absolutely dastardly!" he called out, watching as Finn darted off to tackle his brother, and laughing at their antics. Squirrels...so easily distracted.

User ImageRhys wasn't really sure why he had come with Trix on her visit to Mossflower. It could have been a great day (well a day) at home alone with out the annoying little mouse bothering him all day. He had come up with a few reasons, like Trix was stupid and she was liable to get eaten if she went on his own and he didn't want to lose his brand new minion, but he was probably just trying to make himself feel better. The point was he was here now.

Trix had wanted to come just to look around. She hadn't seen much when she was here last, only the orphanage and what she saw on her way out. She had heard about the market and other stuff that went on in the city and she had wanted to see it as part of her epic quest to see the world. It was Trix who heard the cries about the 'amazing trunk of pure amazingness!' and how could she not want to go and take a look? It was pure amazingness!

User Image"Rhys, Rhys, over there!" she squeaked with delight as she grabbed on of his paws and tugged on it. "Let's go look!"

The squirrel let out a sigh. The direction she was pointing in was crowded with a bunch of people, not really his kind of thing, but he nodded anyways. It was easier to agree than to disagree because she would whine and get loud and generally annoying.

Trix squeaked again and scampered over to the chest that all the others were looking through. It was brilliant, so much stuff. Brightly coloured skirts, and hats, things that shone and had feathers, she had never seen something quite so incredible. She couldn't decide what to grab, every time she thought she had decided, she saw something else that she thought she was incredible. Finally her eyes fell on a black band. It seemed to sparkle a little in the light and it might not have been anything special if it weren't for the large orange feather that was attached to it. She had never seen anything like it before and she snatched it up for herself. It took some trying to figure out how it would best be worn until she decided that the black band would go around her head in such a way that the feather would stick up in the air just in front of one of her ears.

Rhys followed behind and while he watched his little, uh, friend, look through the trunk, he decided that he too would take a look. A lot of the stuff looked stupid, really stupid, Like what Trix had found for example. Something caught his eye though. It was a bandana, with a black, white and bright blue pattern on it. It was well worn, a little rough around the edges and had some strings hanging off of it. He picked it up and tied it around his neck, it was a little big on him, bunching funny and covering part of his face, not to mention the brightness of the blue, but he liked it none the less.

It was as Rhys was adjusting the bandana so that it would sit better that he heard the familiar voice from near by. His ears perked up as he looked around quickly trying to find the source. Could it be? Was it really...? Then he found it, not far away, one squirrel tackling another. It was! He ran quickly over to where his brothers were and jumped on adding to the pile. "Tuck! Finn! You both look like idiots!"

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Back in Mossflower already? Holy popularity, this place just couldn't get enough of him! Drake fluttered lightly through the air, the dappled sunlight filtering through the overhanging branches leading the way. The young bird had no particular place he was heading, and was instead reveling in his regained ability to fly. Bruce had kept to his word, working (somewhat impatiently) with the robin as they made their way towards Fangroot those few long days after they left the orphanage. By the time the duo had reached the bat's homeland, Drake had been capable of flying almost just as well as before. Bruce had even made another promise that he would teach him some flying tricks once the bird's wing got even stronger!

This recent trip back to Mossflower had served as an "endurance training session," or so Bruce had so kindly called it after forcing Drake to fly for hours en route to the forest hub. The breaks had been few, and even now the robin's wings still ached, but it was worth it. Rather than shying away from Bruce's fast-paced training, the bird had attacked it with enthusiasm and fervor. Life with the bat was never easy, Drake was beginning to learn, but it was definitely awesome. Like today, Bruce had come to Mossflower "for business." The bat had been very adamant to not mention the nature of said business, and he'd even told Drake to go off and play for a bit while he worked. The robin had happily obliged.

But it was time for a break! Landing on the forest floor, he stretched his wings, sighing as the aching muscles pulled. Hmm, what to do now? As he was thinking, a voice began to call through the trees, inviting him to 'step right up!' "Holy moley, what is that," he said aloud, his head swiveling in the direction of the voice. The curiosity too strong to be beaten, he began to skitter through the leaves to the caller.

And there he was! It was a rabbit dressed in rather silly clothes, a collection of children slowly gathering around him and a small mouse. Oh, that must be Bale! Drake had heard of the performing rabbit during his time at the orphanage. How exciting this was, and he was even asking the kids to come and take costumes! Bouncing bunnies, this was super!

Hopping up to the trunk, Drake dodged the various paws and tails of the other children as he shifted through the contents himself. At first, he was dismayed to find that most of the costumes seemed to be better suited to creatures with fluffy arms and soft noses. This mask would never fit over his beak, his wings would never get through that shirt, and those pants? Ha! The few articles that wouldn't be hindered by wings or a hard beak were quickly snatched up by the others, and for a moment Drake felt like he was faced with a box full of broken dreams and seams.

A corner of bright yellow fabric poked up through the mass of shirts, dresses, and pants, and Drake pulled at it tenderly, expecting another shirt to appear. But wait! "Holy heroics, it's a cape!" The robin slipped on his prize quickly, the tied knot of the yellow cape resting perfectly against his neck. It was a plain thing, with no embellishments or embroideries marring the bright color, and it was perfect.

His image was not yet complete, however. The robin delved back into the box, bolstered by the discovery of the cape. There had to be something good left! It was within a few moments of his search that he saw a mask. Like the cape, it was simple, and most likely why it had been ignored in favor of the flashier, more colorful masks. It was plain black and small, meant to cover only the top half of the face, and with two holes cut out for the eyes. Drake pressed the mask to his face, overjoyed to find that it fit just right above his beak and wasn't bothered by it.

And now he was all set! Mask on face and cape around neck, the robin backed away from the trunk, joining the group of other costumed kids. "Holy modesty, don't I look great?"

Tuck was so distracted by making sure that his kilt was just perfect that he hadn't realized that there was someone familiar in the group. He had only a moment's warning of his name being shouted before a brown blur collided with him. "Oof!!" The squirrel fell backwards, grinning as he recognized his attacker.

"Finn!!" He thumped his brother on the shoulder. "It's not a skirt!" Well, it wasn't, right? It was a long piece of fabric you wrapped around you. Skirts were already together like pants... right? He had no time for anything else as another form collided with him.

"We're the idiots? You're the one covering your face!" Tuck retorted, grinning even more at his other brother. The trio was reunited! Onlookers beware!!!

Cadence was feeling rather sorry for herself today.

Not that she had any particular reason to, though. She wasn’t starving and never went without food. She didn’t need shelter beyond a cozy branch, and was more than thrilled with the prospect of settling herself down somewhere new every night. She didn’t even mind that her hunt for the puppeteer had already taken her far from Mossflower boundaries, to a place where the forest was wide and deep, and she already had it in her mind that she would one day make a more permanent roost there as a sort of treasure room for all her goodies. She loved the traveling bit, it made her feel like a true treasure hunter!

But what she didn’t appreciate… was that puppeteer himself. Not one bit! He’d led her on a grand and merry chase, always just a few steps ahead, never staying still long enough for the little fledgeling to catch up and collect her dear prize. Oh, her poor, poor bell! Dragged along through the dust of the road, never shined or admired, forced into unwilling slavery…

And never mind that the blasted animal seemed to move faster whenever he saw Cadence. It was like he knew, or something. If someone had tipped him off about her quest for the bell…

But for now, he remained firmly out of sight. Cadence had been tricked back into Mossflower in any event, and was now wandering the streets, looking as forlorn and miserable as any poor, dejected little beast can. Whoe was Cadence, pity to the little magpie be. What was she supposed to do, now that she had lost all tracks of the puppeteer? Her feet hurt, and her wings hurt, and she just couldn’t go on much longer without a rest - but resting would let the puppeteer get further and further away!

But she was tired, for Tree’s sake! She just needed to find a place to sit a while, somewhere not boring or filled with useless adults, somewhere…

From the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a rather jovial-looking rabbit and a little mouse nearly swallowed by a scarf, both advertising at the very tops of their lungs what seemed to be a fun-filled afternoon of events. She squinted a bit, and scurried closer, just enough to catch hearsay of what the rabbit was so keen on hollering on about. Well, she didn’t wanna be anyone’s assistant - that meant being with them all the time and doing what they told her to do. No thanks. And she was already pretty amazing, of course. But… but then…

Cadence perked right up, standing on her very tip-toes and watching with incredibly wide eyes as a chest was presented. It was a magnificent chest, filled with all sorts of interesting things, and already such a crowd had formed around it! There must be treasures in there! she thought excitedly, glancing up at the rabbit and again at the trunk. Treasures… to just… take? What an odd notion! She just had to see with her own two eyes the sorts of things that lay within the trunk. “Y’mean we can just… take stuff?” she asked, a bit mollified - but mostly just eager to get into the chest.

Apparel. Apparel - what use did a bird have for apparel? It was all clothing, for mammal-beasts, that had paws and such! Some of it was sort of interesting, and most of it came in some veeerrry attractive colours… but she didn’t have a clue how to wear most of it, and didn’t want to feel like a fool asking anyone for help. She looked to the one other feathered youth picking through the chest and thought his choices were... curious, to say the least, and while they looked fine on him, she had no use for a cape. Maybe she’d just hang back and watch the rest of them have fun, then - if anything, the stage was set up in an area that was nicely shaded.

But then, she caught a small glimmering within the chest.

She tilted her head one way, then the other, then dipped in her beak cautiously into the chest. She pushed about several scarves and tiaras, vests and pirate outifts - all playthings, nothing that interested her much - until she took hold of a particularly long satin ribbon. She tugged at it, hearing a faint jingle, and for a moment, her heart began to pound; she pulled and fought with the ribbon a bit more frantically, not in the least bit concerned as to whose toes she stepped on in the process. She knew that sound well, and treasured it quite dearly, but could it be the one…?

With a final chirrup and a mighty tug, she freed from the mounds not only an indigo satin ribbon, but also… a small, round, silver bell. A bell! it wasn’t her bell, as it did not have the shine of a thousand suns etched into its surface, but it was a very cute, petite little thing that had a very modest, very sweet ring about it. Cadence let it roll a bit before her, eyes wide and round, little beak gaped open a bit in awe. This bell was even prettier than the one she had spent the last four days of her life chasing! And this one didn’t seem to belong to anyone - and - and she had been given the go-ahead to take what she pleased from the chest…

She snatched it up as quickly as she could, wrapping the ribbon around her neck and shooting wary glares at the child-beasts around her. The ribbon was a bit long, and had to be looped about a fair few times before she could walk without tripping, but it held her new shiny bell in just the right place, where it bounced against her chest and rang out merrily with every step she took. “I LIKE THIS’N!” she crowed, puffing out her chest feathers and raising her head nobly. “It’s a very pretty shiny. And it looks really pretty on me, too.”

Oh, that wonderful rabbit… that gracious and cheerful little mousebabe… How did one go about thanking such wonderful beasts? She was so pleased with herself and those around her, so very thankful to have found such a shiny, that she couldn't help but pipe out a little tune as she jingled the little bell.

The shouts and clamor associated with it had captured the attention of a small blue wren within hearing distance. He was quick to investigate such an interesting occurrence, and not just for childlike curiosity. Oh no, where there were creatures and goings-on...there could be shinies. To be more specific, shinies that might soon become his.

Much like the shiny coin he'd snatched from the poor mouse's hat the night he'd made his escape from the orphanage, Tarke had been slowly, but surely, working on expanding his collection of shinies. His mostly-ill-gotten goods were stored away in his secret hiding place that he'd staked claim to for himself in Fangroot, but he ventured out to new areas from time to time to search for more, sometimes wearing his treasures, like the coin he looped around his neck.

Yes, totally for that reason, not because he was worried about anyone he'd stolen from tracking him down for hunting in the same areas again, no.

Today though, he wore nothing, leaving his treasures at home in the hope that he would find so many lovelies, that he'd need space to carry them all home. Yes! And as he neared the crowd, close enough now to make out what was being said, his heart soared even higher. They were giving things away? Really? It sounded too good to be true...but he wasn't about to let that stop him!

He worked his way into the group, ignoring the other creatures for the most part as all his senses were centered on the treasure chest of goodies in the center. Would he get lucky? Surely, there had to be something good in there!

As he neared, he thought less and less rationally, paying less attention to those around him. All that mattered was the chest, and what possibly lay within. Once close enough, he hopped up and practically dived beak-first into the trunk, like an osprey going fishing. He shoved the bits of thread and cloth around, that's not what he wanted...he wanted shinies, lots of shinies! They were here, he knew it...somewhere!

Aha!

Snatching the shiny bit in his beak, he flapped and scrambled backwards to haul himself and his prize out of the trunk. From his beak hung a small silver chain, or more like a series of them, each with tiny silver discs, something like coins, hanging from them. He had no idea what the object was supposed to be, but eagerly wrapped the chain around his neck, letting the loops dangle loosely. The silver coins glinted brightly against his chest feathers, and he turned this way and that, admiring himself for the grand spectacle that he knew he must be.

((*giggles* I totally pictured him finding something like a belly dancer's chain, like this or this, but then trying to wear it around his neck instead. XD ))

User ImageReturning to Mossflower so soon after his departure was almost an ethereal experience. It made the time since he'd left seem hazy, like the previous days spent in Fangroot were naught but a dream and he'd finally woken up. Fortunately that was not the case; and while Mossflower had a familiarity to it that his new home yet lacked, the forest was a maze, a puzzle, an adventure around every corner just waiting to be tackled.

He'd only parted ways with his brother a few moments before something had caught his attention in the sky. A familiar looking little robin flitting through the sky had landed a fair distance away before skittering off through the leaves. His own curiosity quickly got the better of him and he followed soon after. The inviting voice led him through the trees until he finally found himself amongst other children, most of which looked vaguely familiar, but that was for another time. Instead his focus was on the trunk where everyone was pulling brilliant lengths of fabric from. How interesting!

He'd made his way over quickly, keeping out of anyone else's way as he dug through the clothes. He didn't want anything too vibrant; his dark fur was a boon in the forest and he didn't want anything that'd make him stick out like a sore thumb. That wasn't his style. Instead the first dark piece of cloth he found he tugged out of the trunk. It was stiff and well worn; a dark green vest trimmed in gold around the arms and the edges, the hem torn in places and the ends frayed, but it would work. Slipping the vest over his shoulders revealed it to be quite large for him as it hung almost to his knees as if it were a long coat instead of a vest. The collar too stuck up awkwardly, obscuring the lower part of his face from the sides, and no amount of folding would get it to stay down. Not to mention the buttons were long gone or hiding at the bottom of the trunk, neither option boded well. The only remaining bit of value was a thin gold chain with small bells that was attached to both sides of the collar and kept it secure, at least around his neck. Finally to keep the rest of the vest closed and so it wouldn't hinder him running through the woods he pulled out a scarlet length of cloth that was probably a scarf at one point and turned it into a sash.

Content that he'd at least looked presentable compared to what everyone else had managed to come up with, he found himself unconsciously fading into the background again to keep out of everyone else's way. It was certainly a wonder how many familiar faces were around. Even though he had little to no clue what exactly was going on he couldn't just leave, especially not after the wonderful rabbit and the mouse child had given them such nice things!

Rose slowly edged her head around the tree bark. Her red eyes calmly took in the crowd of children swarming the colorful rabbit promising a show. Rose remained where she was, like a ghost blending into the browns of the forest. She was mildly interested in the commotion, but not interested at all in the mass of animals that was involved in the event. She lurked on the sidelines, reluctant to come forward. She didn't need people, she didn't need colorful clothes, she just needed the Great Tree. It was the one that had all the magic and all the power and looked over the forest... how could people compare to that? They couldn't that was the whole point of the the Great Tree being all powerful.

Rose took this thought and wrapped it around herself like a comforting shawl. She clawed her tiny paws through her fur, as if simply being within sight of the crowd had messed it up and she had to correct it. That's right, she didn't need other children she didn't need a stupid rabbit or stupid clothes. She glanced up one last time to look at the trunks and the children, just as a gust of wind blew by and ruffled up a few pieces of fabric within the trunk. A thin piece of partially see through fabric, drifted up in the wind.

Pretty... Rose thought practically entranced.

She stuck a few furry fingers into her mouth, sucking on them and she cautiously and quickly trotted out from the tree. She slipped around and between the other children easily due to her small size, though she stumbled several times due to her own child-like clumsiness. When she stumbled to a stop at the edge of the trunk she reached a paw in and pulled out the piece she had seen.

It was a veil, well, a piece of semi-translucent fabric that was sewn into a stretchy band embroidered with fading flowers. It was obviously used, the edges of the veil were tattered and full of holes. It looked a bit ratty, but to Rose the shear and shimmering fabric and fading flowers looked beautiful. She slid the veil onto her head, pressing it past her ears and around her forehead. Her right eye actually peered through a hole in the tattered veil, but in the other half the world was thrown into a hazy cloud of white behind the veil. Rose smiled.

The veil covered Rose's face just past her nose, she felt invisible behind it, and even her siblings would have trouble recognizing her. She stood silently in the middle of the group of children, not approaching any of them and simply watching. She stuck her paw in her mouth again and began sucking.
