Concentrate.

Sergei closed his eyes and stood very still, sucking in a slow breath through his teeth and releasing it through his nose. For several seconds he concentrated on his breath, doing his best to clear his mind. Then, abruptly, he opened his eyes, flicked on the automatic pitching machine in front of him, and jogged to the center of the school gymnasium.

The first ball was released just as he turned to face the machine. His attempt at catching it in his metaphorical gravitational field was compromised by his lack of proper physical orientation, and its trajectory altered only enough for the ball to miss his left shoulder by about a foot. He gritted his teeth, planted his feet, and waited for the next. The second attempt was more successful. The ball caught in the field, and then took a quarter rotation around him before flying off in the general direction of the bleachers. The third result was similar, but the fourth made a full orbit around him before it was released back in the direction of the pitching machine like some sort of boomerang. The success made him grin.

About an hour and a half previous, having some free time to kill, Sergei had spontaneously decided to take advantage of the school's facilities to practice his powers. He generally practiced throughout each day, but it was more idle than serious - orbiting an eraser around himself while doing his homework, or sending a light tremor through Theo's chair to make him think for a moment his phone was vibrating. And while those things were entertaining, he knew he needed something a little more serious every so often. Then he had remembered the pitching machine. Having something chuck balls at him was perfect. The teachers were happy enough to let students use the equipment, too, especially if it was for something like this. And because there was no scheduled gym class at the time, it was unlikely that someone would come and interrupt him.

Unlikely, of course, being the key word.

It was the end of classes for Gavin and boy was he glad. History was his last class, and so incredibly boring. It wasn't that Gavin didn't like history, quite the opposite in fact. Normally he found it fascinating, and it wasn't too uncommon to find him curled up with a book about something or other on the subject at home. But the way it was taught at school, well, they left out all the juicy bits! The teachers had a habit of glossing over the affairs and the assassinations and all the other fun stuff that made history interesting. Gavin shrugged a bit as he mused this to himself and figured he was just lucky to have a mom who made sure he learned the good parts.

Heading to the gym, Gavin pulled out his phone to check for any messages. He was supposed to meet Sergei at the gym and then they were going to meet up with Theo and hang out for the rest of the day. His inbox was empty, so he assumed there was no change of plans. When he finally reached the gym doors he unconsciously started fixing his hair, checking his reflection in the window on the door. He swung open the door and found Sergei, still practicing with his powers.

"Hey Sergei!" Gavin called out, waving to his friend. "I thought we were supposed to meet now!" He put his hands on his hips. At the rate Sergei changed his clothes they were going to be late to meet Theo.

Sergei had just released two balls he had been keeping in orbit when he heard his name being called. He had been so focused that he hadn't heard anyone enter the gym, but the sound of Gavin's voice caught his attention immediately, and he turned to look at his friend. But the other boy's appearance was ill-timed; out of the corner of his eye Sergei saw a green blur flying in his direction, but it was too late to react. His guard was already down, and with it, his gravitational field. There was no way he could get it back up in time to change the ball's course. The only thing he was able to do was register one vivid thought: Oh, s**t. Then the ball connected with his temple.

The impact made the world spin, and Sergei stumbled one step back, trying to keep his footing. Unfortunately, that was a hard thing to do when he couldn't tell which way was down. He lost his balance and fell back, landing hard but stopping his head from hitting the floor by catching himself on his elbows.

"Ow," Sergei said, sounding more stunned than anything else. He couldn't remember how he had gotten on the floor or why his head hurt and everything around him was still stubbornly moving, though it was starting to slow enough for him to regain his concept of where the ground was supposed to be. It felt like gravity was kicking in again, only much stronger than he remembered it being.

In an instant, he remembered Gavin and the ball and blood flooded into the tops of his cheekbones.
"Don't sneak up on me like that!" he half-sputtered accusingly, starting to pull himself back to his feet. Another ball sailed over his head and his eyes widened as he changed direction to get out of the line of fire, not wanting the scene to repeat itself.

Wincing, Gavin watched as a distracted Sergei got pegged in the head with a ball and then tumbled to the ground. "Sergei, are you ok man?" A frown formed on the handsome pixie's face as he flitted over to turn off the pitching machine to prevent anyone else from being hit.

At being accused of sneaking up on Sergei, Gavin couldn't help but roll his eyes as he made his way over to where Sergei was on the ground. "Sneak up on you? If that was sneaking I'm a blushing virgin maid, with an amazing rack." He fluttered his eyelashes teasingly at Sergei and took on a demure pose before returning to his normal cocky persona. "Seriously I called your named out as soon as I got in the door, that was so not sneaky." He tilted his head sideways and squinted at Sergei. "You ok? That was a rough fall." He didn't see any outward injuries but something could have been bruised or twisted.

Maybe surprisingly, Gavin seemed more concerned with his well being then making fun of the fact Sergei had been pegged in the head with a tennis ball. Had Theo been there it might have quickly turned into a teasing Sergei fest. Gavin would have to admit, if ever asked, that he often poured fuel on Theo's fire and egged him on. By himself though, when he didn't feel like he needed to put on a show, he was much more helpful.

Noticing that Gavin had turned the pitching machine off, Sergei stopped trying to get out of its range and instead turned his attention on the other boy, scowling at him. "Shut up." But it was true that not much sneaking had been going on there. "Fine, but you did distract me." Even so, apparently he didn't have much interest in letting Gavin go without getting some blame.

Sergei took a moment to assess the damage of the fall. Seeing as though the initial shock of being hit in the head with a ball and falling was wearing off, the pain was starting to seep into his awareness. However, aside from an impending headache and a persistent throbbing in his tailbone and elbows, he didn't seem to have been hurt. He was suddenly, acutely relieved tennis balls had been loaded into that machine rather than baseballs or even softballs.
"Yeah. I'm good." Then, a thought came to him and he blanched. "Just swear you won't tell Theo." Sergei knew just as well as Gavin did that if their friend found out about this, even if he hadn't been there to see it happen, Sergei would never be able to live it down. Ever.

But the thought of Theo had the dual purpose of reminding him that they had somewhere to be, and if they didn't get going soon, they really would be late. He walked towards the nearest tennis ball and picked it up. There were a dozen or so scattered around the gym, and he still had to change.
"Help me clean up?"

"Ok, fine. I did distract you. I'll take that much of the blame." Gavin didn't really mind taking some of it since he realistically knew it was his fault for being distracting. Gavin smiled a bit in relief as Segei told him he was ok. He didn't particularly like seeing his friends get hurt. "Right, no telling Theo. Don't worry I wouldn't do that to you. He'd never let you live it down. We can just pretend it never happened."

Gavin gave Sergei a nod. "No problem." He began moving about the gym picking up any stray tennis balls that had rolled around. He even bent down and checked under the bleachers. Once Gavin was sure that he had his half of the tennis balls up and in the container he looked at Sergei. "That's all of them right? You still have to change?"

There was a rush of relief as Gavin agreed to not tell Theo. Sergei hadn't thought he would, but the possibility was still there and he really didn't think Theo needed an excuse to make fun of him for something like that. It was true that all three of them made fun of each other on a regular basis, but just experiencing getting smacked in the head was embarrassing enough without being forced to recall it in painstaking detail for the next week. Not to mention the ball jokes that were sure to follow. (More of them than usual, at least. Sergei was already frequently on the butt end of those, considering his powers.) "Thanks, Gav," he muttered, raking his fingers through his hair and scratching the back of his head as he walked toward another stray tennis ball.

Sergei finished collecting the other half around the same time as Gavin and nodded as he made his way toward the pitching machine, dumping his armful into the compartment that held them and wheeling the machine back to the storage room where all the other gym equipment was held.
"Yeah. I've got a change of clothes in the locker room." He glanced down at himself. A t-shirt, basketball shorts, and runners - passable, but he had run some laps before practicing his powers, and he really didn't want to walk around in sweaty clothes for the rest of the day. Not very attractive. A shower would have been ideal, but they probably didn't have time for that. It surprised him how much he had lost track of time.

Contrary to the fact that Sergei was thinking he'd look unattractive walking around in sweaty clothes, Gavin had found himself thinking that Sergei looked pretty good sweaty. He didn't go in depth on the thought, just something in passing. Gavin was already aware that he found boy as well as girls attractive and so it didn't seem odd to Gavin right this moment to find Sergei attractive in passing.

Anyone would have agreed surely. Sergei was tall, with dark hair, tan skin, and purple eyes that were striking, even in a school full of people with odd eye colors. He was tall, physically fit, and had attractive features. Gavin had even seen girls, both at the academy and human girls on the street, staring at Sergei. They'd giggle in the way that girls did when they were ogling someone attractive from afar. Gavin even heard girls around the school talking about Sergei in an excited manner. So Gavin didn't give much more thought to finding Sergei attractive because obviously, it was true and normal to notice.

"Ok, you better get changed then." Gavin started making his way to the locker room. "So earlier I was walking around outside between classes and I met this totally hot human girl. Sergei, maaaan you should have seen her." He gave a low whistle to punctuate how hot she'd been. He pushed the door open for Sergei and waited for him to go through.

Oblivious to what Gavin was thinking at that moment, Sergei started removing his shirt the moment they passed through the locker room doors, before they even had a chance to fully close behind them. "Yeah?" he said, voice muffled just a bit by the fabric as he pulled his shirt over his head. "What'd she look like?" Hearing about hot girls was never the same as actually seeing them for himself, but it was still fun to talk about it, anyway. Even if he didn't have the ability to pick up or assist in the picking up of someone who wasn't physically present. There would always be other opportunities for that.

Balling his shirt up into a wad of fabric, Sergei wandered over to his locker and twisted in the combination. He dug out his gym bag and sat down on one of the wooden benches, digging through it for his clean change of clothes. And deodorant, where was that deodorant...
"Nice rack?" he asked in a half-teasing tone, grinning sidelong at Gavin. His friend certainly wouldn't have had his eye on her for her sparkling personality. He would have used a different adjective if he had.

There Sergei went, taking off his shirt. Gavin couldn't help but look, though he didn't stare. Staring at another guy while shirtless might be kind of odd while talking about a hot babe. Even if the person talking about said hot babe liked men too. "Oh yeah, verrry nice rack." Gavin gave Sergei a perverse grin. "Not small, but not too big either. You know?" Gavin leaned back against the lockers. "Let's see...auburn hair, long and curly. Tanned skin and green eyes. She had a great a** to go with that nice rack too." He made his hands in an hourglass gesture.

"Her name was...ummm." Gavin gave his friend a sheepish grin as he dug out his phone to look at the girl's name which he'd put into his phone along with her number. "Diana. Her name was Diana. I'll probably give her a call sometime soon." He shot his friend a mischievous grin. Gavin certainly hadn't been too focused on her 'sparkling personality.'

Apparently, Sergei was too preoccupied with getting his stuff to notice Gavin's eyes on him. Even if the look didn't last long, when checking someone out, eyes tended to wander to places they wouldn't normally otherwise, and that was something he would have been bound to notice if he had been looking up at the time. As it was, he hadn't been and carried on obliviously.

"Ahh, lucky b*****d," Sergei groaned, letting a bit of envy seep into his tone. Gavin always seemed to be getting numbers from hot girls. And oh, there was his clean shirt. Perfect. "You going to take her out somewhere? Dinner or something? A movie, maybe?" All his necessities gathered, Sergei dumped his bag onto the bench and wandered over to the sink to splash some water on his face.

Gavin's grin widened at being accused of being a lucky b*****d. He had to admit that luck came his way more often then not. Certain powers seemed to help it along though, he had to admit.

"Dinner first and if that goes well enough maybe a movie after...and if that goes well..." His words trailed off but the smirk on his lips implied just what he thought they might do if the date went well enough. Gavin pulled out his phone as Sergei made his way to the sink. It had been buzzing in his pocket seeming almost agitated. Staring at the screen he saw it was from Theo. Agitated buzzing was appropriate then.

"Theo just texted me, he wants to know where we are. I'll just tell him you had to change then." He started texting Theo back, his fingers moving swiftly along the letters.
