Well it can be for a lot of reasons actually, depends on the person and the circumstance they are in. for my sister she did it for attention and to fit in with her friends

I do it/did it to punish myself, and sometimes depression.

I don't think that's something that can be easily catagorized. Like most of the time, I imagine its a combination of several of those things

First of all, "emo" does NOT equal "self mutilation". They're two completely seperate things.
Second of all, your teacher quite frankly sounds ridiculous. I mean, what kind of assignment is that? I mean, telling you to get an answer to that question by taking a survey? If I were you, I would have said to her: "You know, I don't really know who I'd survey or how... It's not like I have a ton of friends who all hurt themselves who I can go around & ask, & even if I did, would their answers necessarily be honest at all? Isn't there a better way for me to get an answer to that question, or a better question I can get an answer to?"
Third of all, to answer your question (despite your teacher's stupidity)... Most of the time, people hurt themselves for reasons quite similar to why people drink & do drugs. It's their way of "escaping" from & "copying" with the emotional pain they face in day to day life. When you or somebody else inflicts harm on your body, your brain automatically releases a ton of endorphines as its natural way of helping you feel less physical pain than you otherwise would. Endorphines are also a "feel good" chemical, & their effects on your mental state & mood are similar to that of opiates, except obviously less powerful. (Endorphines & opiates such as morphine both act on the same receptors in your brain.) That's why people are sometimes addicted to cutting in the same way they're addicted to drugs; they're craving a chemical that makes them feel better, it's just a chemical that their body naturally creates. There is, of course, more to why people hurt themselves besides just that. The reason people tend to feel the need for that sort of "release" in the first place is usually because they're depressed. People who cut themselves aren't psychologically healthy... That by no means means they're crazy, it just means that they were born with problems with depression &/or have developed chronic feelings of depression & self-loathing due to abuse, tragedies, or other traumatic events they've experienced in their life. Of course, some people just cut themselves in a horribly misguided attempt to get "attention" or assume a certain sort of "alternative" identity that they've mistakenly idealized generally because they're young, clueless, & don't know any better. I don't feel that that fully counts as "self-harm", though, because when people cut themselves & give themselves scars for attention, they generally cut themselves as superficially as possible & in a way that makes them feel as little pain as they have to; after all, these sorts of people don't crave pain, they crave attention or something along those lines. Lumping people like that into the same category as people who truly have a problem with cutting minimizes the severity of the problem real "cutters" have in every possible way.

Mostly depression..
I don't see why anyone would cut their body for attention. Most of the attention they would get is all negative.

Well, sometimes people do it because they need help with their emotional problems.

I did it because it calmed me down when I felt like I couldn't handle something. It temporarily relaxed me, it made me feel good for some reason. I was, and still am, very depressed so I guess it made me happier at the time I did it.
And in a really ******** up way , it made me feel like I was... I don't know how to word it... worth something, I guess? It made me feel like I was more than just that girl, I felt like "that girl with the big secret that she cuts herself". Of course all this "worth something" bullshit was only in my head, because no one else even knew about it, but.. yeah.
I'd still be doing it if I hadn't been caught. But let me just say that it leaves nasty scars. They go up my entire left arm and cover my thighs. At the time I had thought "What does it matter? I can wear ******** long sleeves." But now here comes summer...
So, uh, yeah. I'm not sure how you can summarize that to your teacher but good luck.
[[Btw, wtf kind of stuff does she teach y'all that she's asking that? Is she your health teacher or something?]]
[[Btw #2= Emo does not equal self harmer. "emo" is what 11 year old posers call themselves. Most of the time they either claim to cut and don't, or just do things like dragging a fingernail enough to make a tiny scratch on their skin and calling themselves emo. I absolutely loathe that word. It's... stupid. Learn the difference, please!

Last time I checked, Emo was a shortened term for a music genre that emerged in the late 80's/early 90's from Post-Punk and Post-Hardcore.

"Emos" cut themselves because they want people to believe they are "emo" or "different". Basically for attention. I know it and I went down that path 2 years ago…. I have a friend who cuts herself and posts pictures of her wrist on facebook. Which I find pretty pathetic. I actually find "emos" to actually not really be "emo" anymore. All they are now is colorful, hello kitty loving, techno/screamo, fakes. 1 reason they are a fake is because their so called "unique style" is copyed and used by hundreds of others. They call themselves unique, and I laugh.
Cutting yourself is pretty dang stupid if you ask me, there are LOTS of other options to curing your sadness. Cutting yourself isn't it, you may think that it helps but it doesn't. It only hurts others, and yourself even more. I find emo's pretty offending really….
Because actual people who actually have hard lives and are actually depressed don't go around saying: OH IM SO FREAKING SAD OHH IM DEPRESSED IM GONNA GO LISTEN TO MUSIC BECAUSE ITS MY LIFE AND THIS RAZOR IS MY BEST FRIEND LEAVE ME ALONE
and the one thing that REALLY grinds my gears…is when people say:
FML or ******** my life, I hate my life, I wanna die…..
That's pretty damn pathetic. Oh and also that comes from allot of 13-16 year olds who haven't even LIVED life yet. I'm 13 and yeah days can pretty much suck but I don't say my life sucks because it doesn't, I haven't even lived it!!
-End of rant
Oh and also one more thing…….Suicide and being suicidal isn't a ******** trend. It's pretty serious and should be taken seriously, seeing a therapist about it. Not listening to an ipod filled with screamo music and cutting yourself…..

I've never CUT myself..But recently I was depppresed and....Well, I tried killing myself, half way through I stopped, Maybe the problem is they fell like they want to kill themselfs. But dont want to in reiality.... Um, cutting and attempted suicide are not the same things... At all. They have nothing to do with each other. For me... I don't think my instance was like that of most people. It was easily in the darkest time of my life. I had stupidly fallen in love with this girl, and it was an impossible relationship, for many reasons. Being poor, and friendless (at least in the city in which I live) were very hard as well. My beloved pet chinchilla dying the next week was sort of the last straw. So when she told me what she was doing with her new boyfriend (I always made sure to ask, so I knew day by day what I was losing) I suddenly got curious. Could I do it? Could I actually break the skin? Was I tough enough to actually go through with it? I picked up the long, serrated kitchen knife and set about finding out. So it took me several tries to leave a line red enough to satisfy me. I don't know that it really bled so much, but it was fine. What I wanted to do was hurt something. To take a knife to something and harm it. To make it hurt and watch it bleed... It just so happened that my own body was the only thing that I could get away with doing it to... Like I said, these were very dark times. That was the story of the first time. There was no release. There was no rush. There was no euphoria. I didn't feel like it made me more interesting. I didn't and still don't see it as part of who I am. It's just this thing that I did twice and something that I don't ever intend to do again. Then again, I understand my experience was in every way different than the average.

Why would a teacher ever choose that for a topic? Seems rather suggestive, don't you think? Especially since there's obviously many different reason why people would do that.
I have a tendency to look for things like that because some of the faculty at my school have it in their minds that I do drugs, when I'm actually highly against them.

You're right, you clearly haven't seen or known very much of life. Hopefully as you get older you can learn to respond to all the various ways in which personal distress & mental disorders manifest themselves with the same degree of seriousness & understanding as you do suicide. As a 13 year old, perhaps you only know of people cutting themselves for attention or whatever other reasons you outlined in your rant... But trust me when I say that what those people are doing barely even counts as "self-harm" if it's for the purpose of following a trend. In the world beyond your middle school, cutting is a really serious problem & it's simply inappropriate to be so insulting & judgmental of those who have dealt with & are dealing with that issue.
