Poetry Terminology
Poetry - A special kind of writing in which Language, imagery, and sound combine to create a special emotional effect.
Stanza - A group of lines forming a unit in a poem.
Couplet - A two lined Stanza.
Quatrain - A four lined Stanza.
Alliteration - The repeating of consonant sounds, most often at the beginning of words.
Simile - A figure of speech that directly compares two seemingly unlike things using the words "Like" or "As."
Metaphor - A figure of speech that compares two seemingly unlike things without using the words "Like" or "As."
Onomatopoeia - The use of a word or phrase that actually imitates or suggests that sound of what it represents.
Rhyme Scheme - The pattern of rhyme formed by the end sound of the lines in a stanza of poetry.
Hyperbole - A figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect.
Personification - A figure of speech in which animal, objects or idea is described as having human form or characteristics.
Syntax - The natural order of words in a sentence.
Repetition - The repeating of sounds, letters, words or lines in a poem.
Sonnet - A fourteen lined poem.
