Life as a rogue was not always kind. There were good days, though, and Sipho had been more fortunate than others. He was a big lion; tall and strong, radiating with a quiet sort of power everywhere that he went. His size kept a lot of the smaller animals at bay. This was mostly nice, except when it was meal time. It was sometimes difficult, being as large as he was, to sneak up on prey. And so, out of necessity, Sipho had learned how to make friends first, and feast later. This was difficult, and tended to strain his conscious, but could not always be helped. A guy had to eat. Right?Thoughtful, blue eyes twinkling with a hint of mystery, Sipho strolled to a stop at a crystal clear watering hole. He dipped his head, ears twitching, and drank. The sun was visible setting over the horizon, and bathed the world in soft golden light. Above his head, the man in the moon winked from the sky. It looked like it would be a quiet night.

If life for lions who had known nothing better than the rogue lands was rough, then it could be said that for a lovely flower like Shiva'Soheila, this place was torture. Her purpose for drifting into this dreary place was quickly slipping away the longer she lingered. Why exactly did I come here again? Soft, lavender hues skimmed her surroundings while walking along the edge of the only watering hole for miles, making sure to keep her pink pads and clean white toes just shy of the ground where its consistency became damp and thick and all too eager to soil her fur.
Off in the distance two scruffy looking males, possibly brothers given their similarity, rough housed near the water. Splashing one another and kicking dirt at each other. Shiva felt her nose wrinkling in disgust at the juvenile behavior of two grown lions, suddenly reminded of her purpose. I must be crazy..
Finding a suitable Pad out here was going to be like finding... well.. like finding water in the desert. A soft, grim sigh fell from her muzzle in exasperation, barely noticing the other, far quieter male across the way as she carefully picked her way towards the water's edge. Trying hard not to think of how the land was growing dark and she'd soon need to find a safe place to bed down for the night away from the prying eyes that seemed to follow her across the savanna.

Sipho stood as still as stone by the water's edge, the dying light of the sun reflected in his usually sapphire eyes. Shiva captured his attention almost at once, and he turned towards the young lioness with a level of curiosity.
He could tell, because he was paying that much attention, that she disapproved of the boys who roughhoused nearby. From this, he drew several conclusions about the sort of lady she was. It was, perhaps, unfair of him to judge so quickly.
But he did judge. And he liked.
She was such a pretty thing.
"They don't know any better," Sipho addressed her from across the water, meaning the wrestling brothers. His voice was a little bit rumbly. A kindly smile stretching across his face, and he waited to see what she would do.
Sipho was, and always had been, a lion ruled by caution. He rarely did anything without thinking, and was always very selective with his words.

His gaze was felt long before Shiva acknowledged the ruddy colored male was so nearby. His quiet demeanor had gone completely unnoticed by her, though she preferred to think he wasn't worth her attention above the thought that someone could actually slip into her vicinity so stealthily. After all, she'd always been taught to remain ever alert while hunting in the rogue lands. A lesson she kept close, more so now than ever before.
With her nose to the placid surface of the watering hole, perfectly delicate lapping barely caused the liquid to ripple. The scent cool and refreshing as her nostrils flared gently. Slow to lift her craning neck to examine the stranger at her side with eyes that expressed a critical sort of examination without narrowing in the slightest. Even managing to look down her nose at him despite the fact that he stood taller than her. If you're hoping I'll judge them less critically because of it, you're sadly mistaken, stranger.

An amused chuckle rumbled up from the depths of Sipho's furry chest. He twinkled at Shiva from where he stood, and was quite unbothered by the airs she was putting on. It was entertaining, in an obnoxious sort of way. His lips twitched at the corners, and he straightened a little where he stood; subtly puffing out his chest.
Sipho was showing off.
"If you're not careful, that pretty nose is going to get you into a lot of trouble someday," there was a playful note in his voice, but the warning was heartfelt. The rogue lands could be dangerous. Not every creature would be so tolerant of Shiva's attitude. Sipho did not like to think that anything bad might happen to her because of it.
"Truly? I was just looking for an excuse to talk to you," his grin was pompous, "Judge them however you like. It makes little difference to me."

You're not very good at this warning thing, are you? A silken voice chided with an underlying layer of snide humor. In the Ukuucha'Wafalme Shiva'Soheila would have never spoken so brazenly to a male who was of age to be a Pad, but here in this strange land, she showed none such restraint. And why should she? None of these lions had earned her respect. They were all rogues and knaves with no loyalty to anyone but themselves from all she had experienced thus far.
It was enough to put her off males forever, truthfully.
Slowly, Shiva turned away from the watering hole with a casual, almost dismissive wave of her tail. Adding from over her shoulder, though she never paused in her regal stride. Look around, I don't think I could be in any more trouble than I am right now. In this... squalid place.
A surprisingly cute, pink nose wrinkled with blatant aversion for her surroundings. It certainly wasn't home. Purposely ignoring the stranger's desire to chat. Now, if we're quite done here. I must be on my way.

Shiva had spirit. Sipho liked that.
It was impossible to tell what he was thinking, behind those sea coloured eyes. His face was a mask of indifference. His posture was relaxed. But his mind was alive with curiosity, and a little bit of excitement. Shiva had to have come from a pride. There was no other explanation for her behaviour.
He wondered what had compelled her to leave, and at such a young age, such security and safety. Unless it hadn't been much of a home.
"Oh," Sipho drawled, a smile softening his features just a little, and left his place by the edge of the watering hole, "Trust me, you could get into a lot more trouble than this."
The rogue lands weren't so bad, really, if you knew how to keep your head low and your priorities straight. There was a reason, after all, that he had remained a wanderer for as long as he had. He was a lion enamored with adventure.
Sipho itched to solve the little mystery that this lioness posed, and stepped easily into stride alongside her.
"Where do you come from, girl?"
He did not like being brushed off, and would not be ignored.

Perhaps that was Shiva'Soheila's pitfall out here in the rogue lands. She had never, not even back home, been the sort to keep her head low. Shiva rather detested females who slunk around in bad form like cowardly, worthless worms. In her opinion, lions should be treated in the manner that they most often acted. It was why she held nothing but respect for her beloved papa.
Sighing impatiently at the fact that the lion seemed to need to have the last say, she chose not to answer. Trying hard not to pick up her pace to lose the stranger. Patience, Shiva.
Eventually they all realized that there was nothing to be had here and went on their own way. She only hoped this male would do so before she found a place to sleep for the evening. Using every ounce of strength to keep her voice even and without annoyance, though some how it stained the lyrical sound anyhow. Don't call me girl. My name is Shiva'Soheila and what business is it of yours where I come from?

Shiva had a pretty face, but this did little to compensate for her snotty attitude and entitled demeanour. Originally, Sipho had thought these things rather amusing, if not charming, but decided that they were more irritating than anything else when directed at him. Wondering idly if she was always this difficult, frustrated by her continued indifference to his presence, Sipho thought about seeking company elsewhere.
"Well, Shiva'Soheila," Sipho emphasized her name on purpose with a disdainful roll of his eyes. His tone, however, remained mostly neutral. "I am a curious fellow. I've been many places, and spoken to many travellers. I wondered if I might be familiar with the place that you call home?"
This was the truth. In his many (fortunately healthy) years roaming the savannah, Sipho had heard many stories and gone on many adventures. As lovely as Shiva's striped coat was, he rather thought that she was too young and immature for him to pursue as any sort of lover. And so he was less interested in her than he was in the possibility of finding a home.
Because Sipho longed, most of all, for a pride to settle down in. This was his ultimate goal.

The fact that she seemed to disgruntle him so might have been amusing if his juvenile behavior wasn't so off-putting. Really, rolling one's eyes? Even Shiva--in all her young years--had never made such a immature gesture. It didn't give her much reason to look on him with any sort of respect, that much was for certain. With her prim, little nose in the air the dainty female scoffed humorously. He wanted to know if he might be familiar with her home, but truthfully the idea of such a lion lurking about the edges of her pride made her fur wrinkle with a shiver of disdain.
Despite her better judgment, Shiva decided to oblige the stranger if only, perhaps to discourage him from ever attempting to visit. I hail from the Ukuucha'Wafalme, a proud pride run by males of exceptional skill and breeding, like my father the Vizier Tariq'r'ad who are quite protective of their harems of only the most beautiful and devoted lionesses. No female would ever wish to leave the side of her Pad to speak with a riff-raff like you and nor would our Pads be so pleased as to find someone as yourself. Female-less.
She emphasized with a sidelong glance at the rusty brown lion near her side, a thin smile upon her lips. Lurking about, so it seems to me, unlikely, that you would have ever met anyone from my homelands.

Shiva disdained to give him any sort of respect. This was okay, because Sipho didn't require it from her. It wasn't worth his time, to sit and be cordial when she was so determined to hate him. But he was looking for information, and willing to suffer through her arrogance in order to get it.
"I see," Sipho pointedly ignored the jibes at his person, and marched along with Shiva as though she were the most pleasant person he'd spoken to in days. It was a lie. If there was anybody else Sipho could have asked, he would have. But she, unfortunately, was the only option.
"Tell me, Shiva'Soheila, if the men (Pads, is that what you called them?) in your pride are so protective of their ladies, what are you doing out here all by yourself?"
Something cruel twisted the corners of his lips upwards. When he spoke, his tone was light, but his words were harsh.
"Did nobody want you?"

Oh dear, this one certainly knew just how to cut to the quick didn't he? No matter how much Shiva tried to convince herself that this rogue was so far beneath him that his words shouldn't have even reached her lovely ears, she couldn't quite keep her stomach from turning over on itself. Shiva'soheila's inexperience and youth was made all the more apparent by the way her glare sliced across the distance between them before she could help herself.
Damn him and his serpentine tongue! Lilac hues quickly lifted with the tuck of her tiny chin, gathering herself enough to raise proud head a little higher. Half to thwart the teary haze that threatened to blind her and half in an effort to cling determinedly to her haughty persona. Please! Even though the Pads in my lands are of the finest lineage, they still have their flaws. Though many had tried.. like your sorry self.. a beybanu of my breeding requires a Pad of flawless perfection.
So I've decided to find myself one, if you must know. Shiva couldn't help but bristle, even she wasn't entirely sure why she had felt it necessary to explain herself. A lingering sense of self doubt perhaps.

Any sympathy Sipho might have had for Shiva and those tears was snuffed out by her her attitude. He had meant to be cruel, because it was in him to do so, and regretted nothing of what he'd said. Shiva was a pretty girl, sure, but nothing terribly special.
"Ah, I see," Sipho didn't react to the way that she bristled, and pointedly ignored her glare. He was bigger than she was. Older than she was. Stronger than she was. Shiva could get angry all she liked. He had no misconceptions about who was worthy, here, and considered the subject thoroughly dispensed with.
Sipho had more productive things to do.
"Well then," he drawled, and stepped away from her at last, "Best of luck, Shiva'Soheila. I hope you can find what you're looking for."

Ultimately, it was probably for the better. The proud little Ukuucha mink most likely wouldn't have appreciated any pity the rogue male attempted to show her. And truthfully, she was glad to be rid of him when finally he had decided to take his leave of her company.
Without so much as a backward glance as she proceeded towards the distant sunset Shiva didn't care for the uneasy knot he had left in her stomach. Stating firmly over her shoulder, Farewell, rogue. I wish I could say it's been a pleasure, but we both know I'd be lying...
Damnit all if she wasn't about to have the final word.
