User ImageImogen loved music. Instruments, the sounds they made, were amazing. Lyrics in songs were fascinating to her as well, but that was partially because she wasn't any good at writing songs. Both instruments and songs were inventions of a different sort in her mind and she loved them as she would any invention. With that being said, she couldn't turn down the opportunity to see an invention at work, and for free no less. So there she was, sitting with a group of other critters and waiting for the show to begin, when she heard something. Drip... It was quiet, but she definitely heard something. Drip... There it was again. She began looking around, curious as to what it could possibly be. Then she saw and heard it at the same time. Drip. A drop of some liquid landed on the head of the male shrew sitting beside her. She stared at it with a slightly confused expression before looking up to see where it came from and mumbling, "I wonder..."

Edgar sat primly perched upon his seat in the audience, attention riveted to the stage even though no performers were yet visible. It had been a while since he'd had reason to leave the cozy storefront he and Makandriel operated, but the wildcat had convinced him to venture out to Mossflower for a day of browsing shops and enjoying the open air. There was a play going on today, she said, a free performance being put on. And well... he never could resist literature in any of it's forms. Unfortunately, his companion seemed to have disappeared off into the crowd as more beasts arrived. The shrew nervously tapped the digits of his paws together, taking his eyes off the stage for a moment to glance around in hopes of spotting Makandriel's frame.

As he turned his gaze back to the stage after an unsuccessful scan of the crowd, Edgar felt a small drop of liquid plip onto the top of his head. With a little frown, he reached up and brushed off his fur, looking down at the moisture on his paw before he turned to the mouse sitting beside him.

"Um, do you happen to know if it was meant to rain today? I thought it was supposed to be clearahhhhh--"

Edgar's word's petered off into a surprised little stutter. He hadn't noticed before, but his neighbor was very, very lovely. The shrew ducked his head with a small squeak, clearing his throat and trying to regain some composure. The results were debatable.

"I, ahh, sorry. Did you feel that just now? The, um. Did it start raining?"

Imogen's attention went back to the shrew when he began to speak, asking if it was supposed to rain, but just a moment after his question, something seemed to surprise him. Imogen turned to look behind her for a moment, wondering if she had possibly missed something, before turning back to him. with his next question, she shook her head and said, "It didn't fall on me." She then looked up at the clear blue sky and added, "And I don't think it was rain." Her problem solving was starting to kick in, now, and she said, "But then, if it isn't rain, what could it be?" looking to the shrew, and staring at the spot where the liquid had landed before curiosity finally got the better of her. "Let me see," getting up from her seat and moving to stand in front of him. Without thinking that it might be an invasion of space, she reached forward, placing her hands on each side of the shrews head and tilting it downward so that she could examine the exact spot where the drop fell.

He could feel his face heating up with each second that passed, and when she answered Edgar could only steal quick peeks over at Imogen. He couldn't quite bring himself to keep his eyes on her for too long. Staring would be rude, and... Oh! He should be paying attention to what she was saying. The shrew tilted his head up at the spotless sky as well, staring up at the distinct lack of clouds rather than the pretty mouse beside him. There. That was a safe place to look. He gave a small noise of confusion at the wide stretch of pristine blue.

"Hmm, you're right. No clouds..." Edgar blinked rapidly as a pair of paws settled on either side of his face, and his gaze was tilted briefly back to Imogen before he was once again getting a view of the the ground below the seats. The shopkeeper stuttered several false starts of sentences before he gave up, folding his paws in his lap and hoping the mouse didn't notice how much his ears were burning.

Imogen didn't notice the shrew's nervousness. She was too busy trying to figure things out. She looked from the top of his head, up to the sky, and then around to see where else it could have come from. It was obvious to her that it wasn't rain, but she couldn't figure it out. She noticed a nearby tree and said, "Hmm... Maybe..."

Not thinking, yet again, she took the shrew's paw and said, "Come on," pulling him up and out of his seat and toward the tree. She always wanted to figure things out, so it didn't occur to her that he might not really care too much what it was or where it had come from. She simply assumed that he would want to help her figure it out. "My name's Imogen, by the way," she said as they headed toward the tree. She had a habit of forgetting to introduce herself until somewhere in the middle of the conversation.

The shrew was on his feet before he was even sure of what was going on, just blindly following the tug at his paw. Paw? She was holding his paw. Edgar's heart gave a happy little flutter, and any objections he might have had died on his tongue before they could even be formed. He gave Imogen a small, bashful smile as they paused before the tree and she introduced herself. What a beautiful name to match such a beautiful mouse.

"I'm-- I'm Edgar. Good t-to meet you, miss." He nodded with the greeting, then looked up at the branches of the tree before them. It definitely looked like they had been disturbed, some of the smaller ones were cracked and broken. Reluctantly, the shrew drew his paw away from Imogen's so he could place it against the bark, leaning in to peer at it. "Ah, it does look like someone has been climbing."

Imogen smiled and said, "It's nice to meet you, too, Edgar," before following his gaze to the tree and the broken branches. She nodded in reply to him saying that it looked like some had been climbing and said, "It does... so, someone must have dripped something on you." She still had no idea what, though, and it was bothering her quite a bit. She stared at the tree for a moment before deciding that she was a little too close to the tree to see the whole picture. Still staring at the tree, she took a few steps back until her foot wet with something wet and slid out from under her, causing her to fall backward. Her back hit the ground with a thud and she lay there with her eyes closed as she let out a small, "Ow..."

Dripped something on him? Edgar's worried frown reappeared at those words, and he rubbed at the spot on his fur where the drop had hit him earlier. He hoped it hadn't been the refreshment of some playgoer seeking a better vantage point of the stage. That would mat something terrible if he didn't clean it off soon. Hopefully it wasn't anything worse than a spilled drink, either. He quickly plucked his paw away from his head, looking at it again just to make sure. Well, whatever had hit him didn't seem to be... unsavory.

The shrew was pulled from his own thoughts at the sound of a muffled thud and small "ow." Turning from the tree, he spotted Imogen sprawled on the ground, and was instantly skittering over to her side. Edgar stooped next to the fallen mouse, offering her a hand up, his expression painted with concern.

"Oh dear, a-are you alright? What happened?"

"Mm, yeah," Imogen replied to Edgar's voice as her eyes began to open, "I just, kind of slipped on so-..." When her eyes focused on the shrew offering her his paw to help her up, her mind went blank and her heart skipped a beat. He was gorgeous, and so very kind. To offer to help her up like he was, it was very gentlemanly and brought a soft blush to her cheeks as she took the offer, placing her paw in his. After she was back on her feet, she gave a uncharacteristically quiet, "Thank you," before hesitantly releasing his paw. She hadn't wanted to, but there were important things to tend to... She just couldn't remember them at the moment. All she could think about was the shrew standing beside her. "Uhm... What were we talking about?"
PostPosted: Sun Feb 13, 2011 8:32 pm

"Ah, you're welcome." There was some hesitance on Edgar's part as well to release Imogen's paw, and he reluctantly let go when she was back on her feet. She was standing close by him, though, and that was fine. It was more than fine, actually. It was... well, it was nice. It made him feel pleasantly, giddily warm all over, and he ducked his head again in a fit of embarrassment. Tucking his arms behind his back, he stared down at his toes as he scuffed them through the dirt. The shrew seemed to be so caught up in his own awkwardness that he didn't quite notice the shift in Imogen's demeanor, and answered with his own stilted reply.

"Trees. Um, a-and people dropping things from them."

Imogen looked to Edgar with a confused expression for a moment, a look of understanding following soon after as she said, "Oh, right! The liquid that someone dropped on you..." A small frown came to her face, then. Whoever had done it must be a dreadful critter to be so mean to her wonderfully kind Edgar. She'd have to talk to them, or perhaps do worse, and make them apologize. Yes, she would do exactly that, but first things first. "We need to find out who it was," she said, walking closer to the tree and looking up at the branches. She needed a clue. Something out of place. Anything.

When she took a step, she remembered that she had stepped in something wet, she could still feel it. At first she didn't care, but then she realized it could help her find the horrible beast that was so mean to her love. She quickly sat down and puled her foot up to look at the bottom. It was still there, and it wasn't water. She could tell that much, but not much more than that. She looked over to Edgar and stared for a moment before remembering she wanted to say something. What was it again? Oh, right. "I think I stepped in the same stuff that they dripped on you... but I can't tell what it is."

Edgar blinked once, twice, shaking his head as if to clear a fog. He tilted his head curiously as Imogen passed by him and paused at the tree. Ah, right. someone had been up there and dropped something on him. He idly rubbed at the fading blush on his cheeks as the mouse examined the scene. Goodness, he'd been acting rather twitterpated there for a moment, hadn't he? The shrew gave a curious humm as Imogen settled on the ground and began to scrutinize her paw, and he moved over to stand beside her.

"Hmmm... Here, may I see?" Edgar asked as he crouched next to the mouse on the ground. His nose twitched as he examined the bit of spilled liquid. Ah, there, that was a creepingly familiar scent he hadn't noticed before. It was definitely one of the potions he and Makandriel kept stocked. Sweet berries and... oh no, it couldn't be. With a look of dawning realization he began to replay the past few moments in his head, and he glanced up at the mouse's face to find the same starstruck expression he must have been wearing just a moment ago. "Oh dear..."

When he asked if he could see, coming closer to her, Imogen blushed, but nodded and allowed him to examine what she had stepped in. She stared at him as he did so, admiring every little thing about him. His dark, soft looking fur, his brown eyes that were so focused as he worked to figure out what was on her foot. He seemed too amazing to be real, and ever more so when his eyes met hers, but when his words reached her ears, she looked a bit confused. He had sounded... worried. "What? Is it dangerous? Was someone trying to hurt you? Are you hurt? Oh, please say you're not hurt," she said, looking at him with eyes full of concern. She didn't even stop to think about her own well being because at that point in time, it didn't matter. She felt as though she wouldn't be able to live without him, as though she would be dead whether this mysterious liquid killed her or took him from her.
PostPosted: Sun Feb 13, 2011 10:45 pm

"Oh, no no, I'm-- I'm fine. No need to worry. I-it's nothing dangerous. I, ah, just thought I recognized what this might be..." Ohhh, how would be the best way to explain this? Edgar fretted for a moment as he sought to find the right words. He didn't want to upset the poor mouse, she really did seem very sweet. But he knew her enamored feelings right now weren't entirely her own, and he wasn't quite certain how a smitten creature would handle being told they'd inadvertently been given a love potion. Although the dose had been very mild, and it hadn't actually been ingested. So it ought to wear off with a bit of time...

"I'm fairly certain this was a potion, actually. It's harmless for the most part, though it can have some, um, interesting side effects." There. That wasn't exactly a lie. Edgar gave Imogen a small smile and once again offered a paw to help the mouse to her feet. Looking around at the crowd once more, he noticed some of the other beasts exhibiting symptoms of the potion. The play seemed to have been entirely forgotten in the hubbub. Maybe it would be best to get out of the crowd for a while until everyone came back to their senses, and he could give Imogen time to regain her own. "Would you like to take a walk with me?"

Imogen was quite a bit relieved when Edgar said that it wasn't dangerous and her face showed it. She listened as he explained that it was a potion that she had stepped in and that it had 'interesting side effects'. She took his paw, letting him help her up, but she looked a little confused and curious as she said, "Interesting how?" She didn't feel anything happening, so she wondered what it could possibly cause. Would her foot change color? Or maybe it would cause her to lose some fur. Oh no! What if it made Edgar lose his fur? His dark, beautiful fur. She was almost already mourning for it, when his melodious voice floated into her ears again, asking if she would like to take a walk with him. "Oh, yes, I would like that very much," she said, taking his arm, though he hadn't offered it, and smiling widely. This wonderfully kind and handsome critter wanted to go on a walk with her. She hadn't noticed the others around them acting odd, so she had no reason to think that he asked because of them rather than simply because he wanted to be with her.
