Flying Wyvern

Flying Wyverns are large, bipedal monsters that have two wings. However, there are some Wyverns that are quadrupedal, operating their wingarms as forearms instead like Tigrex and Nargacuga. These monsters have been dubbed "Pseudo Wyverns". Some are flightless despite their classification as Flying Wyverns. These wyverns show their wyverian ancestry by the small forewings on their two front limbs. Still others are known as Cave Wyverns, and are named so because they spend most of their lives in caves. The Khezu, Gigginox, and their subspecies are included in this and they are known for their disgusting appearance.

RemobraUser Image

Nicknames: Remo, Serpents

Titles: Envoy to Disaster, Serpents of the Sky

Size: Small

Status Inflictions: Poison

Weakness: Ice

Habitat: Almost all

The Remobra are small serpentine wyverns that are no bigger than a Velociprey. Their main attacks are a tail flick, poison spit and flying tackle. These attacks are not extremely dangerous but offer great annoyance if the player is battling a larger, more attention-demanding foe. They mainly hover in the air, attacking from above. They travel in groups and live in damp, water-rich areas such as the Tower, Jungles, Swamp and Gorge. However Remobras are known to migrate to areas of extreme heat; namely Volcanoes and deserts making them widely adapted to any sub tropical environment in Minegarde.

RathalosUser Image

Nicknames: Thalos, Los

Titles: King of the Skies, King of the Heavens, Tiger Demon

Size: Large

Status Inflictions: Poison/Burn

Weakness: Dragon

Habitat: Almost all

Rathalos are medium to large-sized flying wyverns, with their most notable features being their crimson appearance and huge fire patterned wings. Rathalos inhabit many areas; they are most commonly found in the Forest & Hills, along with the Volcanic zone and the Swamp zone. They can be found in the Volcano and Deserted Island. Rathalos spend most of their time fighting while airborne. This ability to live in the strangest and harshest of climates makes the Rathalos renowned far and wide as the King of the Wyverns.

There are two Rathalos subspecies; an Azure variant inhabiting the same zones as its red cousin, and a more solitary subspecies, the Silver Rathalos, that inhabits a far more secluded area, the ancient Tower as well as the Swamp zone occasionally. All Rathalos are male with a female counterpart known as the Rathian.

Rathalos have a whole variety of attacks, ranging from burning the hunter with a set of three fireballs from the air, to their incredibly deadly poison scratch, which leaves the hunter both poisoned and stunned.

RathianUser Image

Nicknames: Ian

Titles: Queen of the Desert, Queen of the Land, The Earth Entity, Dragonlady

Size: Large

Status Inflictions: Poison/Burn

Weakness: Dragon

Habitat: Almost all

Rathian is the female counterpart of the Rathalos and also renowned as The Queen of the Wyverns. Rathians are green wyverns that slightly vary from Rathalos in looks and attacks. She has a patch of brown thorns on her upper back and her tail spikes are filled with poison. The Rathian fights on the ground a lot more than the Rathalos, who more often exhibits aerial attacks such as fireballs and claw attacks. They are prized for their rare Plates & Rubies. The Rathian has two other subspecies, the Pink Rathian and Gold Rathian.

When Rathian is low on stamina, she will trip at the end of charges, taunt more, and fire a small puff of flame from her mouth instead of fireballs. She will also set off to either sleep at the nest or prey on an Aptonoth. If she manages to pin down a hunter and bite them repeatedly, she will be able to recover stamina. If enraged, her mouth will fill with flames and her attacks become much more aggressive. She starts taking to the air more, attempting to use her pin and other strong attacks more, and gaining a large fire burst attack.

Another variation of the Rathian is one of a much lighter, almost white, green.

KhezuUser Image

Nicknames: None

Titles: Shadow, Light in the Dark, The Electrified Wyvern, Walking Thunder

Size: Small

Status Inflictions: Paralysis

Weakness: Fire

Habitat: Swamp and Snowy Mountains

Khezu is a species of wyvern that live in the cold dampness of caves. Their pale white flesh is very moist, which keeps the creature's skin from drying, and is also very easy to get scratched. On its body, you can see quite a lot of small scratches that probably came from being attacked by other creatures or even by scraping it on jagged rocks and stalagmites. The Khezu has visible veins on its pale skin, just like most cave dwellers do. The Khezu's skin constantly needs moisture, so it tends to live in wet, and humid areas such as the Swamp. Living in dark caves, the Khezu's eyes have regressed greatly, though it is made up for with their superb sense of smell. A layer of fat helps to keep them warm and prolong their time without eating, as there is not much in the way of wildlife roaming in the Khezu's choice habitat.

Khezus are hermaphrodites, meaning an individual is both male and female. To reproduce they paralyze a creature and inject their young. The Whelps grow inside their victim until it dies or they are strong enough to leave.

Although the Khezus are cave dwellers, they go out if they please, or if food inside grows too scarce. A Khezu outside a cave will fall prey to bigger wyverns, since the bigger wyverns can see the Khezu easily in the sun, while the Khezu still needs to smell the predator. Inside caves, the Khezu has an advantage, since it can cling to the ceiling, and smell the opponent easier with less scents to distinguish while the opponent has trouble finding the Khezu in the darkness. The Khezu's habitat is often located near active sources of water; however, this is typical only in high humidity areas, such as swamps, jungles and the like. It would seem that the Khezu only lives for parts of the year in these warmer areas and migrate to the Snowy Mountains during the breeding season. It is there that the Khezus insert their Whelps into prey. Juvenile Khezus are called Whelps.

There is also a variation of the Khezu that is red.

MonoblosUser Image

Nicknames: Mono, M-blos

Titles: None

Size: Large

Status Inflictions: None

Weakness: Thunder

Habitat: Desert

Monoblos are large hard-shelled wyverns that have the ability to dig and travel underground. Monoblos were named for the strong, singular horn protruding from their head, which is held as a prize by many hunters, as are their hearts which are very rare. Monoblos are in fact, the only wyvern/monster known to have two, or more, hearts.

They have a brown, rock-hard texture to their shell. There is a subspecies of the Monoblos known as the White Monoblos which are generally larger in size than their sand coloured counterparts and seen as more dangerous by hunters. Ironically, whilst their ear splitting roar is the bane of hunters they are weak to Sonic Bombs when not enraged and digging through the ground. It is assumed this is because of the actual shock of the bomb rather than the sound of it.

When in rage mode black smoke will protrude out from a Monoblos' mouth and four red dots will appear on the shell of its face, above its horn. Monoblos have only been spotted in the desert regions. While they have no breath attack their roar is considered as a lethal weapon itself.

DiablosUser Image

Nicknames: Blos, Twohorns, Devil

Titles: Desert Tyrant

Size: Large

Status Inflictions: None

Weakness: Ice

Habitat: Desert

Diablos are hard-shelled wyverns, commonly found in the Desert region. Their name "Diablos," means both "Two Horned" and "Devil". They are easily recognized by their trademark dual horns protruding from their head. They have tough skin and even stronger heads, which they use as their primary weapon. Diablos have the ability to dig and travel underground, but can easily be unearthed with a Sonic Bomb. However, Sonic Bombs do not work when Diablos is enraged, due to its increased tolerance to high-frequency sounds. They are one of the most feared monsters living in the desert, even though they are actually large herbivores. It has been theorised that their horns become weaker and more brittle with age, as some individuals can be found in the Desert with only one horn, although it is possible these individuals lost a horn due to a battle with another Diablos. The Diablos can produce a High-Grade roar which normal Earplugs do not work against.

The black variation of the Diablos is much more volatile than the sandy coloured one.

BasariosUser Image

Nicknames: Basa, Rio

Titles: Unseen Peril

Size: Medium

Status Inflictions: Burn/Poison/Sleep

Weakness: Dragon/Water

Habitat: Desert

Basarios is a small, rocky wyvern that lives in the Volcanic and Swamp regions. It is the juvenile form of Gravios. It is able to release either sleeping/poisonous gas from its underside, and on extremely rare ocassions a fire plume. It has also been known to unleash a very powerful lava beam at times, but this is very rare. It can also hurl balls of fire like a Yian Kut-Ku - although much stronger - but it prefers to charge towards predators.

When resting or changing areas, it burrows underground, exposing only its back to give the appearance of a large grey rock. Being very heavy makes it a slow mover, and although it has wings, it very rarely uses them to fly. Even when they do, their weight allows them only to fly for a very short time.

The Basarios resembles a Monoblos or a Diablos when charging, yet it is much slower and can not turn as fast.

Despite the Basarios's ability to hide, in most areas they are visible, since the rocks on his back are a slightly lighter colour than other rocks.

GraviosUser Image

Nicknames: Gravi

Titles: Armored Supremacy

Size: Large

Status Inflictions: Burn/Poison/Sleep

Weakness: Water

Habitat: Desert and Volcano

Gravios is the mature form of Basarios. Easily one of the largest wyverns found in the series, which may intimidate the inexperienced. Because of its weight, Gravios do not have a tendancy to use flying as a method of travel like most other wyverns, instead they will walk from areas to areas, or swim through tunnels hidden under lava. Similar to Basarios, it only uses its wings to get out of trouble, like when the effect of Pitfall Trap has run out or when he has moved to far out of bounds. It can be found in the Volcano and Desert. They are able to go in and out of lava without any damage done to them. Gravios eat rocks and minerals for their nutrients.

Like the Diablos, the Gravios has a much more violent and aggressive black counterpart.

Size: Medium

Status Inflictions: Poison

Weakness: Ice

BerukyurosuUser Image

Nicknames: Beru, Kurosu

Titles: Thunder Wyvern

Size: Medium

Status Inflictions: Paralysis

Weakness: Ice

Habitat: Gorge

Berukyurosu is able to shoot a sweeping, linear lightning beam from its mouth, while hovering in the air. The beam itself is very similar to that of the Rajang. Berukyurosu is highly adept in aerial combat, able to do even more difficult maneuvers than the Kushala Daora.

It has the ability to learn patterns of attack from hunters and will counter it, or will attack/evade accordingly. It has very similar appearance to Rathalos and it may be related to it. Also, some of its attacks are similar to that of the fire wyvern. When Enraged, the yellow mane of Berukyurosu will turn red.

If enraged, the Berukyurosu will summon enough lightning to engulf the entire area.

DoragyurosuUser Image

Nicknames: Dora, Rosu

Titles: Dark Thunder

Size: Medium

Status Inflictions: Paralysis

Weakness: None

Habitat: Snowy Mountains and Highland

A subspecies of the Berukyurosu, it lives in the Snowy Mountains, and is capable of using Dragon Element attacks. Its hair turns orange when in rage mode and it harnesses an even more advanced moveset than Berukyurosu. It is capable of paralyzing Hunters with its Dragon-Element attacks.

GurenzeburuUser Image

Nicknames: Buru

Titles: The Navy Barbarian

Size: Medium

Status Inflictions: Waterblight/Paralysis

Weakness: Thunder/Fire

Habitat: Highland

Its large spiked horn is a deadly weapon; however, it can also attack with a water beam, water balls, hip check, a turning bite, a slam attack, and a charge. Gurenzeburu can also produce a paralyzing gas in the same manner as a Gravios' gas attacks. The Highland, in which Gurenzeburu lives, is known for its rapidly changing weather; the lightning storms can even damage Gurenzeburu, should it be struck directly.

TigrexUser Image

Nicknames: Rex, Tiggy

Titles: Roaring Migrator

Size: Medium

Status Inflictions: Freeze

Weakness: Water/Ice/Thunder

Habitat: Desert and Snowy Mountains

The Tigrex is a Pseudowyvern known for its highly aggresive nature. The Tigrex lives in the desert and migrates to the Snowy Mountains to feast on Popos, which seems to be its prefered food. They are visibly recognizable by the orangish-yellow skin with blue stripes. As pseudowyverns, their wings have evolved into forelegs, which makes them very fast, but they only fly when moving to another zone. When coming from a high area, they drop straight down, rather than slowly hovering down like most Wyverns. When they don't see the hunter however, they might slowly hover down.

A variation of this wyvern is, oddly enough, its more skittish counterpart; The Black Tigrex.

NargacugaUser Image

Nicknames: Narga, Naruga

Titles: Living Shadow, Black Beast

Size: Medium

Status Inflictions: None

Weakness: Fire/Thunder

Habitat: Forest and Jungle

When it's in rage mode its eyes glow bright red and leave a trail of reddish lines when Nargacuga moves. Also, its tail erects large spikes which can be flung and linked up with its attacks for devastating hits. Their vertebrae and tail muscles are extremely flexible, making the tail of Nargacuga also prehensile. Its tail is also its most powerful weapon. The scales at the end of the tail can also be shaken to produce rattling sounds similar to a rattle snake's.

The Nargacuga subspecies is covered in moss green colored fur and scales.
