A soft purr escaped slightly parted lips, torso mashed against the soft, flattened grass except for the obvious almost-black tail that stuck noticeably out of the cub's hiding place. The bright blue eyes gave off a glare as she wrinkled her nose at the target: a butterfly that had alighted the nearest large rock and coerced the femme into chasing it for the past half hour. She knew she had lost, but Maati's pride wouldn't allow her to try and scramble back to her safe home until she'd caught the fluttering bug as a prize. Creeping forward, she licked her lips in anticipation, trying not to make a single sound outside of the rustling of the grass in the wind. With a quick intake of air, she leaps for her prey, letting out a torturous growl to warn him of his oncoming peril. A little too soon, perhaps, and the bug had flitted out of reach just as Maati's face came in contact with the rock, crumpling to the ground with more embarrassment than pain. She quickly stood up and shook it off, sitting on her butt as a woozy feeling seeped into her head, and a paw quickly brushed her dark red cheeks as she looked around for any witnesses, unsure of the location of her butterfly and partially no longer caring.

Zuna had been wandering about, light brown eyes scanning for something or someone to keep her entertained. Her mother and two brothers seemed content to nap and Zuna had tried to relax and join them, but she only could nap so long before feeling restless. It wasn't long before the purple and gold cub came across another cub who seemed to be stalking a butterfly. Zuna froze in her tracks, not wanting to startle the other cub or the butterfly. Besides that, now that she had found someone to interact with, she found herself feeling nervous. Zuna watched as the other cub went into a flying leap after her target and promptly faceplanted on a rock. The butterfly flitted away no worse for wear. Before she could stop herself, Zuna found herself padding over towards the other cub, feeling concerned that maybe she'd hurt herself.
"Are you umm... are you ok?" Zuna asked softly, giving Maati a questioning look.

No sooner had the other cub emerged from seemingly nowhere, Maati had quickly gotten to her feet and held her head highly, as if she were unaffected. "Yeah, yeah, whatever." She huffed, only furthering the attempt to hide embarrassment by putting on an attitude. "Who are you? I've never seen anyone around beside family." Had she been paying attention properly, maybe her voice wouldn't have seemed so cocky. But that accursed bug was taunting her from far off, and her gaze had shifted from the other cub to the floating critter behind her and her nose wrinkled with distaste. "Nasty little bug..." She murmured, her thoughts lingering on the catch that never happened, and she would've liked to have had.

Suddenly the other cub was standing and seemed totally fine. She was huffy and full of attitude and Zuna wasn't quite sure how to react. "I'm....my name is Zuna." She did give her name, quietly, when it was demanded of her. "My family is is around here too, just over that way." Zuna gestured with her head. "I've never met anyone around here except my family either...who are you?" Zuna continued to speak softly, tilting her head in curiosity at the brown cub. She actually hadn't met anyone besides her family at all, so she was very curious about her.
Zuna had thought the butterfly had been pretty, not nasty. Arguing with this girl seemed like a bad idea though, so Zuna kept her mouth shut.

It came as a sudden realization that she was being spoken to, and Maati's gaze quickly snapped to the other cub, "Oh... OH! Zuna, eh? Not bad, cute even... I'm Maati. Normally I, uh...don't come out this... FAR!" She pawed at the looming closer bug and missed, pouting childishly until she remembered her company, quickly sucking it back in, "Why are butterflies so hard to catch?" She asked out of the blue, her eyes staring intently at her newly designated friend, according to herself and without Zuna's opinion on the matter. Her tail flicked lazily from one side to the other as she sat down, almost unblinking as she waited for the other's response.

It seemed to Zuna that she'd been forgotten, at least temporarily by her new companion. For some reason this didn't surprise her, but she didn't like it either. Zuna didn't blame Maati, it was more a dislike at herself, she wished she wasn't so quiet. But Maati seemed to think her name was cute, and that made her feel a bit better. "Oh um... thank you. I like it. Your name is nice too. It has a nice..." She paused trying to think of how it would be best to say what she wanted. "A nice sound to it."
Watching as Maati swatted at a bug, Zuna sat since it seemed like she had made a friend for the moment. "I don't know. I've never tried to catch one. Once I um... caught a frog." Her voice dropped down lower. It didn't seem right to talk about catching something when he new friend was having trouble catching her prey. But she figured it was best to say it, for the sake of conversation and everything.

Maati blinked, her jaw dropping, "Neat! I think the only thing I can catch is a mouthful of dirt...." She pouted lightly, but she couldn't be mad at her new friend. There was plenty of time for that later, when she knew her better and could properly show off. Maati loved being better than others, as she knew she soon would be, but what kind of first impression would she leave if she proved herself better now? "Was it really slimy and green?" She teased, sticking out her tongue and wrinkling her nose at the thought of trying to eat a frog. "No, wait,I bet it was really squishy!" Maati's imagination was getting the better of her, but she didn't care. She kept the idea of catching a frog in her head and couldn't help but be slightly impressed.

Zuna dropped her gaze to her paws, swiping at the dirt a little bashfully as Maati clearly seemed at least a little impressed by her frog catching skills. She did look pleased though while looking bashful. Her gaze turned back up to Maati as the other girl began making wild guesses as to what the frog had been like. Nose wrinkling slightly too, she recalled what catching the frog had been like.
"It was squishy. Not too slimy, but a little. It was.... kind of gross." Zuna confessed. Then she looked a little thoughtful. "It didn't taste too bad, but...the texture." It was her turn to stick out her tongue a bit in disgust. "I bet you could catch one too if you wanted. You umm... just shouldn't eat it."

Maati couldn't help but laugh at Zuna's face, nodding in agreement, "Alright then, maybe I'll try to. Instead, we could make a game out of it, instead of a hunt?" It was at that moment she'd jumped up, and excited look crossing her face, "Maybe we could race them instead? We could call it, 'Frog Wars', or maybe 'Ribbit Racing'..." She blinked, a flush rising in her cheeks as she quickly sat back down, mentally cursing her outburst and how 'unfeminine' it had been. It gave off a weird vibe, in her mind, especially since she only had one male in her little family. Maybe that's where she got hers, from the lack of his. And the giggle she was avoiding made cheeks even darker.

Zuna couldn't help but blink in startled surprise as Maati had her sudden outburst. It was quickly followed with a delighted little giggle. Maati's ideas sounded so fun to Zuna! She gave her new friend a happy look. "That sounds like a lot of fun Maati!" Her own excitement seemed to banish away her shyness a bit. "We should definitely try it. I like the name 'Ribbit Racing'." The outburst didn't really seem all that strange to Zuna, but she did have two brothers, and that was all she was really used to besides her mother.
"Last time I found the frog while it was raining... but I'm sure they have to be out at other times too." Zuna looked thoughtful, trying to remember where else she had seen the green hopping creatures. "Maybe by a watering hole?"

Maati pouted, heart sinking at the thought of trying to navigate the area when she'd never ventured into it. "Umm... You wouldn't happen to know which way to go, would you?" She squeaked, quickly clearing her throat and taking in her surroundings, just in case they got lost in the process. She could at least have an idea of where they had been and work towards it instead of getting lost. "Maybe there's one nearby..." She spoke softly to herself, forgetting that her thoughts should be in her head and not out of her mouth.

Zuna looked thoughtful a moment. She had gone with her mother and brothers to the watering hole once, but she wasn't totally sure which way it was. However she didn't want to disappoint Maati. "I think I know where one is close by. It should be that way." Zuna stood and gestured with her paw towards the direction she thought it was in. She started off in that direction, expecting Maati to follow after her. They couldn't get too lost could they? They both had family nearby after all.

Maati nodded and quickly bounced after her companion, the thought of seeming too hyper sinking in a moment too late as she finally slowed her pace and walked casually just a few paces behind, sticking within Zuna's peripheral range. "Maybe we can find some teeny ones, or maybe really fat ones that would be easy to catch!" She chirped, her train of thought set on pure optimism should the worst befall the two on their little search. She got the idea to better know her companion with small talk, so her mouth hadn't been shut for long before the next sentence burst from her throat, "How many brothers and sisters do you have, Zunie?"

If Zuna noticed her friend's hyper bouncing she didn't show it as she continued her pace. "I think... some fat ones. The one I caught was fat. Maybe that's why I could." She paused a moment in her walking thinking of which way she should go. She veered slightly to the left and then resumed their trek. Smiling to herself over her new nickname Zuna peer back at Maati. "I have two brothers, what about you?" As she turned forward again she could just make out the watering hole in the distance, so she picked up her pace a little.

The idea of fat, easy-to-catch frogs made Maati feel as if she were too lazy to catch anything else, but at that point she'd be happy to catch anything if it meant having fun with Zuna. "I've got one brother, but two sisters." She replied, the bounce in her step throwing off her vocals and giving them a constant raising and lowering of pitch. It took Maati a moment to realize Zuna had gotten faster, and she looked up expectantly at the watering hole in the distance, a wide smile crossing her face as she resisted the urge to pounce on her new friend, "Oh yay! You found it!"
