The day was like any other day. Dark. Cold. Stormy. And rainy - it always rains in this part of the city. In a place where the dogs roam free and the babes hold their own against them, nobody dares mess with the ones who hold the most power. It's rarely light here; the smog creates a thick sort of barrier around the buildings.

I run my own business here; the detectin' kind, the kind that people come to when they're lookin' for a skanky wife or a cheating b*****d of a husband. It was quiet; TOO quiet. My partner was out, doing Jack knows what. Probably harrassin' that lady friend of his, or maybe playin' some of his music down at the old bar we hang out in after cases. I'd been sitting at his desk, just mindin' my own business, readin' some informational texts, when there was a knock at the door.

"Yo," I said, not botherin' to get up; when you're as good as I am, you don't open the door for people; they open it for you.

There was a soft click as the handle turned, and a second later the most beautiful gal I'd ever seen stepped in. All sweetness and pink cheeks, she moved over to speak with me. I recognized her, of course; I always know who I'm dealin' with.

"I have a problem," she said, with a voice like pure honey. "And you're the only one I can ask to help me."

Feet propped up on the desk, I gave her a reassuring smile, sliding my boots down to stand up and walk over to her, putting my hands on her shoulders.

"Don't worry, darlin'," I said gently. "It'll be all right. You've come to the right person."

She looked much more relieved, clingin' to my arm gratefully. "Thank you," she said, sounding a little breathless. She's such a doll, this gal; it was difficult to step away from her.

"No problem, darlin'," I said, tilting my hat at her as I escorted her to the door. "I just need ta confer with my partner, and we'll be sure to help you out the best we can."

She tilted her head. "Where is your partner, anyway?"

I smiled at her. "Makin' music, I'm sure."

"GABRIANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!"

The door to the nix's room was unlocked; a good thing too, since Ren didn't bother checking it before he all but kicked it open, bursting through the doorway. He wasn't entirely sure if Gabe was asleep or awake, but either way he needed his help with something. Dressed to the nines, he swept into the room with an extravagant flap of his wings, tilting a black fedora on his head.

"WAKE UP, GABRIANNNNNN!"
PostPosted: Wed Feb 09, 2011 4:19 pm

Well, if anything, Ren had one thing right; Gabrian was making music. Just... not the type of music he probably expected the nix to be making, for you see, Gabrian was snoring. Loudly. The previous days had proven to be chaos; Riley's sugar high, finding out about the scarentine auction, the ball in question, not to mention classes and getting beaten up by some unknown figure near the forbidden forest. Granted, by now that sort of chaos was starting to become the norm for him, but it didn't mean he wasn't utterly worn out by it.

In fact, when he'd gotten back to his dorm room and rather than crawl into the fish tank, the demon had fallen asleep on his sofa. He'd practically crashed there, taking only a moment to place a spread out music sheet over his face to block out the light, having decided that the world could be damned... he was going to sleep. He'd take care of everything else in the morning. Of course... he hadn't been expecting an over enthusiastic gryphon to crash through his damned door so early in the morning (Bloody hell! What was he even doing up? And had he forgotten to lock the damned door over night?).

As such, when Ren kicked the door open, the nix woke startled, which resulted in him falling half off the couch, one hand gripping the side of the sofa while the other flexed his claws in mild alarm. It wasn't until he'd managed to kick his sleepy brain out of overdrive that Gabrian noticed Ren standing in front of him (albeit upside down due to the demon's current position), wearing... "What the jacking hell are you wearing?" a pause as he groaned, "I think I hit my head..." these last few words were murmured to himself as he reached rubbed his head, making absolutely no effort to pick himself off the ground, which meant he was still looking at the gryphon upside down.

Though technically, he was glaring.

Or scowling. It was probably hard to tell due to Gabrian's odd position, "What are you doing here?" another pause, "What time is it?" and then for good measure, "... What, in Jack's name do you want?" his mind, which was slowly waking up, seemed to point out that surely, surely, the cause of Ren's visit had to mean they were facing some sort of emergency, "Please tell me you didn't burn the skullinary club kitchen down - I'm not helping you clean it up! You can go tell Alessa yourself! You're alone on that one!"

Ren paused momentarily in his overly extravagant entrance into the nix's room to peer curiously down at Gabrian.

"What're you doing laying like that?" he asked, tilting his head, then shrugged before the other could answer. "And I am wearing a most delightful outfit that I picked out the other day; it's completely normal, Sir Snake, and it is most accurate for the festivities of today. Namely the case we have been set upon by the lovely Alessa~!"

Half flying, half leaping across the room, Ren either ignored or didn't notice the glare that Gabrian was shooting in his direction. He bent down, sweeping some of the sheet music away from the nix and sat down on the sofa. It was relatively small, which meant that he was halfway sitting on top of Gabrian's legs, and had to lean forward to look at the upside-down serpent.

"I did not burn the skullinary kitchen down," he answered indignantly, straightening the black tie he was wearing. "Also it rather hurts to know that you would just abandon me like that, but no matter~! We have a case given to us by the most charming Alessa, since it seems that she has lost her lepus and has given me the task of finding it, which means that she's given it to you as well. Here, I brought you an outfit to wear~" and here he thrust a bag of clothing into the other's arms, grinning widely down at him.

"Oh, I don't know Ren, I just like to lay down in this horribly awkward position. What do you think, bird brain?" Gabrian offered his friend a weary look before he slid off the sofa entirely and pulled himself up into a more traditional sitting position on the floor. Reaching up with a hand, he rubbed the side of his head, where his skull had come into contact with the ground and glared up at the other boil. The fact that he had chosen to sit on the sofa apparently not unsettling the nix at all. Probably because he was just so used to Ren by now, "You're nuts... you do realize this, yes?" his gaze was moving up and down the gryphon, as if trying to decide if what he was wearing was interesting or dumb. Or both.

He settled for the later, his scowl having melted into mild confussion as he heard the other boil out, "Wait what?" a pause followed and the nix lowered both hands to the floor, his pose now looking less than elegant and more... well, amusingly childish actually, "What case? What are you even talking about, Ren?" and then, he decided that this conversation was horribly moronic, giving him no real information, "Have you ever noticed that half our conversations make no sense? Also, your tie is crooked."

A snort was released as the nix rolled his eyes slightly, "Oh, I don't know Ren. I think Alessa is quite charming, but certainly not the most," that said though, he turned to look up at the gryphon, "I'm still not entirely sure what you're getting at; what is this about a case-" he cut himself off as a bag of clothing was thrust into his arms and the situation was explained to him. For a moment, the demon just sat there, and then, slowly, ever so slowly, he peeked inside the bag, his eyes hooding over before he lifted his gaze and squint-glared at the other boil, "How does that even work? I think that your ghoulfriend asking you to find her lepus has nothing to do with me! Why does it make it my business by association anyhow?"

On the other hand though...

His gaze lowered down to the clothes in the bag and he rolled his eyes again, "Okay, fine, fine, but there had better be something in it for me," apparently, the nix needed little persuasion to help a friend. Either that, or he secretly rather liked the idea of playing around campus wearing those clothes. Whatever the reason, he pushed himself up to his feet and entered the bathroom. When he emerged, all dressed up, he made sure to look much more dramatic than the other boil, "I think you forgot the cigarettes, Ren."

"Why would you like to lay in horribly awkward positions?" Ren said flippantly, waving a hand noncommittally. "Seems like a totally weird way to spend your time. Maybe you just need to get out more."

Gabrian slipped his legs out from underneath him, half sliding, half moving to sit on the floor, one hand rubbing the side of his head. Ren leaned forward, arms resting on his knees, fingers linked together as he scrutinized his friend. "Now," he said his tone overly serious and ignoring the "nuts" comment completely and tugging his hat lower on his face. "We've been called in by a lovely gal to search for a missing lepus, see. She came to my office this morning and was quite upset. She asked me, since I'm the best, to help her find out what happened to said lepus. I told her I'd grab my trusty partner - " he jabbed Gabrian's shoulder lightly " - and that we'd get her some answers as soon as possible."

Ren paused, glancing down at his tie, then waved a hand again. "You fix it, then. It looks fine to me."

Tilting his head, Ren pushed the fedora up a bit to eye Gabrian suspiciously. "She is definitely the most charming," he said, somewhat childishly, then quickly slipped back into the mood he had been in before. "It's your business because you are my partner, see," he said breezily, standing up and pacing around the room. "We're in this shindig together; can't run a detective agency with just one person. Doesn't work so well, and though I know you prefer to work alone, you are my partner in this, and I need your help."

For a few moments, as Gabrian stared at him, Ren was quite certain he'd be thrown out of the room and a shoe tossed at his head. But, with a sigh, the nix stood, disappearing into the bathroom. He appeared moments later, his outfit nearly identical to Ren's with the exception of the fedora, which Ren only had one of.

"Hm," said Ren, fingers against his chin as he scrutinized the demon. "Doesn't quite look as good as me, but it'll do. It seems to be missing something, though...ahhha!"

Reaching up, Ren spun the fedora from his head, stepping over to flip the hat onto Gabrian's head instead. Then he stepped back, hands on his hips, and smiled triumphantly, obviously pleased with his own work.

"There," he said. "Now you look the part. Also," he reached into his pocket, pulling out a packet of black licorice, breaking off a piece and sticking it in his mouth. "This is the closest I'm getting to cigarettes. You ready?"
PostPosted: Wed Feb 23, 2011 7:07 am

Gabrian turned his head to look at his friend, his expression blank, heavy lidded, as if to point out that Ren was missing the point entirely, because that thing from earlier was called 'sarcasm'. Alas, it was simply too much trouble to point that out and instead, the nix chose to look at himself in the mirror by the large bed (which he had... not used - why hadn't he used the bed, if he hadn't gone into the tank last night? Arg!). All in all, despite the absurdity of the outfit, he had to admit he looked rather nice. Not to mention that Ren's fedora actually seemed to complete the outfit rather well; if he had to run around campus wearing a silly outfit, there were worse garments that the gryphon could have picked, he had to admit.

He turned his head to look slightly over his shoulder, arching a brow, "What lepus? If it's Sheelah, I'm going straight back to sleep, Ren. Because Davy's been missing since yesterday afternoon and I'm not looking for them," for several reasons, actually, one of which was the fact Gabrian no longer bought the female lepus hated the floresce as much as he'd initially though and well... he kind of thought it was a bad idea to interrupt whatever they er... might have been doing that required them to escape both his and Alessa's vigilance. As his shoulder was jab, he frowned, "I'm your partner?" he turned back to the mirror, still busy adjusting the hat on his head; if he tilted this way, it covered one eye in shadows and he felt it looked correctly dramatic and... he was in no way getting really into this whole charade. Nope. Not him, "If I'm your partner, I hope you're prepared to slip up the reward 50/50, Ren. Let's just hope Alessa decides on the more edible, sweet type of rewards instead of giving you some sugar or I will be sorely disappointed," and by disappointed, he meant he'd do something about it.

He finally turned away from the mirror and paused as his friend offered him a piece of black licorice, "Eeehh.... I can do better. Gimme that," he snatched it away from him and then went to the dresser, where there sat the innocent looking Treasure mimic. Closing his hand into a fist, the demon knocked softly on the top, and instantly, the mimic woke up, opening it's mouth slightly, "I need the cigarettes, Mimi," when the creature blinked owlishly at him, Gabrian rolled his eyes, "The chocolate ones, dear. Did you eat them again?" the creature seemed to understand and opened it'self up entirely; instead of a mouth or a tongue, there was a compartment there, like a pocket space, where Gabrian kept his jewelry and apparently... some sweets. He took out a box of chocolate cigarettes and passed one to the gryphon, slowly closing the Treasure mimic, "Don't it too fast, Ren. I don't have enough to last the whole day," and obviously they were important for their image.

After a moment or two, Gabrian put the sweet into his mouth and looked at Ren, "So," he drawled out, doing a fine right job at slipping into character, "What do we know? Where was it last seen and what set of clues do you have?"

Ren blatantly ignored the supremely unimpressed look his friend was giving him, instead moving to stand behind the other as Gabrian examined himself in the mirror. He had to admit - they did look pretty good. The black vests, black slacks, and black ties were snug and fit (though Ren's was still a little crooked) and worked well with their white dress shirts. Overall, Ren was really very pleased with the turnout.

"I...never said it was Sheelah," he said, not sounding convincing in the slightest as he pranced around the room, lifting up various articles and items as if to examine what was underneath them. He cast a glance back at the nix, lifting a brow. "Yes, partner," Ren repeated slowly, as if Gabrian were hard of hearing. "Means we do everythin' together. Can't have one without the other, see.

"And whatever sugar I get on a normal basis is different from the sugar the little lady offered as a reward for this case," he said primly, picking up a small pillow and tossing it lightly from hand to hand. "She gave indication towards something 'light and fluffy and warm,' so whatever it is, we'll be splittin' it. 60/40, since I'm the lead partner here," Ren added cheekily. He was having way too much fun with this, and from the look on Gabrian's face, the nix was starting to give into it as well. Perfect.

His expression turned pouting, however, when the licorice was snatched away. "Hey, wait a second, I was going to eat that - "

Ren recognized the little treasure mimic; Gabrian had given him one the other day, without any sort of explanation except for "Don't ask why it's pink" and "feed it well." Although at first Ren had been wary and mildly afraid of the...thing...his own treasure mimic had actually proved herself to be rather useful at times.

"Aha!" Ren said, taking one of the candy cigarettes and sticking it between his teeth, a triumphant expression on his face at the question. "Well, you see, said lepus was last scene outside on the school grounds, by the main front lawn, so we best be starting there~"

And, latching onto the nix's wrist, Ren proceeded to drag him to their destination.
PostPosted: Wed Feb 23, 2011 7:38 am

The demon stopped fiddling with the chocolate cigarrete in his mouth to look up at the other boil. There was a beat, during which Gabrian's golden eyes narrowed to slits, the whole outfit, not to mention the fedora, doing a rather brilliant job at making him look more intimidating than the nix had any right to be, "You don't sound very convinced, Ren," he studied his friend closely for a while, eyes still narrowed until suddenly, he dropped the facade and let out a long, weary sigh, "It better not be Sheelah," this was drawled out as the nix took out the cigarette from his mouth and all but jabbed it in Ren's general direction, "Or I swear, I'll throttle you for waking me up."

He paused when the other boil chose to play around with his (LW's?) pillow, and after a couple of seconds of hesitation, he stretched out his arm and yanked it out of his reach, "Gimme that. Mine," he frowned slightly and snorted, tucking the pillow under his arm, "What was that? You don't need me? I can go back to sleep? Okay then, have fun finding that lepus, Ren, because this detective ain't taking anything less than 50% of what the rabbit-ghoul offers you," he seemed to pause midway to the bed, as if pondering something or other, "She still owes me an apple pie, come to think of it..." this was said absolutely randomly, demonstrating that for all his usual cool elegance, Gabrian operated in much the same way as any other boil in the world. He was in no way immune, nor was he in any sort of way... more mentally strong than others. He was just slightly more adept at hiding his feelings from others, but that did not mean they weren't there and that he wasn't just as needy as the next person.

He took a bite out of the licorice he still held before flinging the pillow back on top of his bed, looking over his shoulder as Ren began to explain the 'case' details. Why did he have the inkling of a notion the ghouls had no idea what they were up to? They were going to spot them, frolicking around campus in these outfits and would then proceed to wonder if their boilfriends were insane. Or, okay, no, scratch that; more insane than usual. He was not even allowed another moment to protest, as Ren chose that moment to latch onto his wrist and began to drag him away, "This better be good..." Despite the grumped out words, by the time they crossed campus and stood in front of the gate, Gabrian was fully into his role again; he just couldn't help it. He was an actor at heart and it was just all too easy to slip into such roles, "It really would help to know which jack-damned lepus it was though, Ren. Because all of them have distinctly different personalities."

"Throttling is bad, Gabrian, bad," Ren said airily, tossing a wink at the other, though he was vaguely disturbed by the look he was getting from the nix. That certainly wasn't a very pleasant expression, though Ren chose to spin around, clearing his throat in an attempt to move on past the inquisition.

However, he had to move back when the nix started to go back to his bed. "NO WAIT I WAS JUST KIDDING," Ren half screeched, dragging Gabrian back and accidentally breaking character in the process. "50/50 is just fine and - hey wait, why does she owe YOU an apple pie? What about me?"

He wasn't quite sure why Gabrian should get a pie and he shouldn't. After all, Alessa was his ghoulfriend, and he liked pie as much as the nix. Though the sweets she had offered for them doing this had been rather persuasive in convincing him. Not that he had needed much convincing in the first place, but he knew Gabrian would need some.

His pouty expression quickly turned into an amused one, Ren hastily schooling his features back into a calm facade. He knew Gabrian would go along with his little plans, if only because the nix had grown far used to Ren's wild and somewhat ridiculous antics by now. They had both learned just how similar the other was, and this included being silly.

Standing in front of the school gate, Ren put his hands on his hips, glancing around as if carefully examining each and every inch of the heavy metal. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a magnifying glass.

"Anything not related to elephants is irrelephant, Gabrian," he answered breezily, bouncing away to peer through the magnifying glass at the gate, the walkway, the grass of the campus. Looking either very silly or very intelligent, he put one hand behind his back, trailing along the edge of campus slowly. "Though it probably should be best said that said lepus is, in fact, a ghoul rather than a boil. Does that help?"
PostPosted: Wed Feb 23, 2011 8:25 am

He'd chosen to grump about just how good throttling was all the way to the gate, albeit... in character, surprisingly enough. However, he'd been so busy trying to think of all the distinctly original ways in which he could throttle a gryphon (He was favoring the idea of constricting him in serpent form - hug of death) that he had not really paid attention to Ren or what he was saying. Or granted, he'd heard the other boil, but simply stored the information away from later. As such, when they arrived on scene and he was dragged out of his inner musings, Gabrian was finally able to realize the fact Ren had no answered his questions.

"Ren..." there was a distinctly threatening tone to the nix's voice as he stepped forward, grabbing his friend by curling his fist into the front of his vest before yanking him forward. The motion inevitably brought them face to face, and the nix narrowed his eyes, "Ren, I swear..." he drawled out, but it was probably obvious to the other boil the threat was empty. At least the threat of physical abuse anyhow; there was little doubt the nix would pull off something else other than physical abuse to get back at the gryphon though, if they just happened to be going after a certain first mate lepus, "You are not answering my questions and-"

"Anything not related to elephants is irrelephant, Gabrian."

The demon blinked, their pose still holding, and yet, his expression dissolving into utter confusion before he let out a sigh, "I... just... what the hell does that even have to do with anything?" it was worth noting that Ren's strange phrase did manage to amuse the nix, if the tug at his lips (which he was trying, and failing, to hide) indicated anything. He let go of his friend's vest and rolled his eyes, "So given your information, that leaves us two choices. Either the hero lepus or Sheelah," he turned his head and gave his friend a flat, pointed look, which seemed to voice that he knew where this whole charade was going and he did not approve, "If we find Sheelah with Davy I swear, you're going to be the one to explain just what they were doing together to Alessa. I want no part in that," he watched as he friend bounced away from him and began to look at the grass with a magnifying glass.

Gabrian's gaze hooded over before he rolled his eyes, choosing to tail the gryphon as he advanced. He followed until something caught his attention; there, out the corner of an eye, Gabrian spotted something that seemed to stand out against the vegetation. Separating himself away from Ren, the nix walked a few steps to his right, plucking what looked like a torn up grey, stripped handkerchief out of the thorny bushes, "I'm just going to go out on a limb here and guess it's not a hero lepus we're after," he shoot his soon to be dead friend a pointed look.

Ren had not quite expected Gabrian to yank him towards him by the front of his vest. Or maybe he had, and had just not expected it to be so soon. He looked up at the nix, shrugging (or sort of shrugging, since the current position made that a bit difficult), and flashed the other a sunny, wide and slightly cheeky smile.

"It means what it means~!" he answered brightly and totally unhelpfully, holding up his hands in an oh, well! gesture. "And what it means is what I say it means. Which means that anything unrelated to elephants is irrelephant~! Just like you'll never be a great juggler because you don't have the balls to do it~!"

Ren pranced away before Gabrian could reply to that (and throw something at his head for it), moving with his magnifying glass towards a shrubbery hedge. They were certainly getting some strange looks from the students meandering by; some were mildly curious, tilting their heads as if to try and see what exactly the two were doing. Others were lifting their eyebrows and then shaking their heads once they realized just who it was. A few others still were looking completely and utterly confused. To these students Ren just beamed a cheerful glance, a little wave sometimes.

"I'm just going to go out on a limb here and guess it's not a hero lepus we're after."

He turned back, still holding the magnifying glass up. Gabrian was holding a small piece of cloth in his hands and Ren bounded over excitedly, holding the magnifying glass to look at it.

"HMMMMM," he mused. "It seems as if this here cloth may or may not belong to one female lepus by the name of Sheelah. "HOWEVER," Ren added, swinging the magnifying glass up dramatically to look at Gabrian's face through it, leaning obnoxiously close to do so. "We can't know that yet until we've got all them case details, so what say we go question the witnesses, eh?"

And with that, Ren took off across the school grounds.
