The massive gold surveyed her Weyr imperiously. Only distantly she watched the young golds and her other rivals take off. Pleanty of other dragons waited on their own ledges every one of their whirling eyes focused on her. Glith preened in their attention, mantling her wings slightly. That was quite right.

The gold stayed put for nearly half the day, being admired by the other males. It was nice being admired. Almost suddenly the gold dove off her weyr ledge and swooped low over the herdbeasts frightening them into a stampede.

Tolara got up and went to the ledge, her stomach a knot of unease bordering on fear. It was almost like Glith's first all over again. No one other than Zorith and now, it would most likely be a stranger.

"Blood it, Glith. Just blood." She murmmered, sure the gold heard her silently.

With a toss of her head the gold fell onto the first heardbeast, blooding it.

A pair of eyes whirled redly as they studied the single remaining gold as their owner considered what he was about to attempt. He had never participated in a mating flight before, and the thought of chasing Glith..... Suddenly, the eyes blinked. Was he sure he really wanted to try this?? He decided that yes, he did. She was out there showing off, obviously aware of the many eyes upon her. Soon, very soon.....

In his weyr, L'del had just finished oiling Tera when he heard Blazeth rumble from the ledge. "What's got your attention today??" he asked the bronze one.

Glith.

The tone in which that single name had been spoken brought L'del to his feet. Striding out to his dragon, he reached the bronze's side just as Glith vacated her perch to terrorize the herdbeasts. Eyes wide, L'del sucked in a breath. He knew what the bronze intended.

R'nar sat back against a warm rock, lazily blinking the blazing sun from his eyes. Isseth lay nearby, wings spread slightly to dry, gleaming a smooth and glittering bronze. The two had spent the early morning at the lake bathing and simply enjoying their free time until the next Fall, gossiping about the Hatching the night before.

Isseth's great bronze head lifted slowly, the lids opening one by one to reveal the slightly whirling blue eyes. Sensing his bonded's unease, R'nar opened his own eyes and plucked the blade of grass that he'd been chewing from his lips. What's up?

Isseth was already rising and stretching: his great wings gave a small flap, buffeting R'nar with a slight breeze. The bronzerider was surprised at how suddenly his dragon had come alive; great coils of muscle rippled and tensed along his body as his neck whipped up and around to gaze with startling intensity at some object of his attention. R'nar sat up.

It begins,
said the bronze, taking a quick glance at his rider before springing into the air and winging away towards the heights. R'nar took one look in the direction Isseth had gazed with such intensity, swore, and whirled around to grab his shirt. He only had to see the sight of the blooding queen once to know what was coming.

After bullying his rider into preparing himself for the flight, Nakoreth was nearly late to join the rush as Glith finished blooding her kills. He knew his rider was reluctant, and was fully aware that he didn't have a shot, but maybe this would make that silly man at least be more present.

--

K'makin's initial reluctance was swept away as the flight began. He couldn't help but feel Nakoreth's enthusiasm, and as his mind slipped into the dragon's, his own problems seemed to vanished. A grin split his face; this was living!

Glith was flying in fine form today. A sheer delight to chase. The wind on his wings, the dizzying closeness of the others, Nakoreth-K'makin decided it was a wonderful day. Already several of the bronzes were pulling ahead, but Nakoreth-K'makin didn't mind, let them wear themselves out early.

Kryanth had been antsy all day. T'ner tried to ignore him, working on the new wing assignments since the disasterous nightfall had knocked them down a few pegs. He shuffled though his hides again, rearranging his list again. No, no, those two didn't work well together.
He down his cold cup of klah and sighed when a single phrase echoed though is brain.
Glith bloods.
T'ner froze. You wish to try again?
Yes.
T'ner sighed and neatly rolled up his hides, joining Kryanth on the ledge. There was the queen, glistening as she blooded her kills.
Glith's flights were almost known for their unconventional outcomes, who knows, his mind whispered, you could become Weyrleader. T'ner pushed that thought away. He had great respect for the Weyrwoman and the last Weyrleader, may he rest in peace.
His dragon was confident so he made his way towards the Weyrwoman before his mind was completely swept away.
We go.
As the golden queen burst into the air a fair of dragon's followed, Kraynth/T'ner's powerful wingbeats swept them up and away. Did he see a brown and a blue flying? Ha! Such foolishness, how could they ever wish to defeat the great bronzes of Pern?
The queen, such a beauty, the sun dazzled as it reflected off of her skin, so entrancing. She danced though the air like no other creature could and he stayed from the others, giving himself room to manuver. His beautiful prize would be his today.

Pericolath was sunning, watching the activities of the Weyrbowl. The Weyrlings that morning with their first attempts at bathing their hatchlings had been rather amusing. But then the activity had slowly died down.

Until now.

Peri could sense what was going to happen. He could taste it on the air. The population of male dragons was waiting for it. Waiting, waiting. Then, she finally moved, neatly taking her first kill, protesting as she wished to consume the meat within the warm body.

The bronze watched as the competitors slowly began to line up. A blue? Then a fresh out of weyrlinghood bronze? An unfamilar bronze... A brown?! Ah, Kryanth. Wait. That was it? Those were all that where going to participate?? Glith was much more worthy than that small handful. Only two of the five were worthy of the gold. Well, one at the very least. Pericolath didn't know the other mature bronze. The others were definately not worth it.

Glith should have a better selection to choose from then that! Pericolath shifted restlessly upon his ledge, drawing the attention of his rider. P'las blinked as he took in the scene, casually resting a hand upon his dragon's flank.

You do not wish me to join? Pericolath's mindvoice sounded shocked. Usually P'las made him join each and every Flight.

The man continued to watch the scene below. No. A smile graced the bronzerider's face as he turned to look at Pericolath. You like Wrath. And... well...

Peri chuckled as he realized what his rider was thinking. And you like Wrath's rider.

P'las colored at that blunt statement. Well.. uh... maybe... His mind searched for a way to change the subject. Why are you so restless?

The bronze turned whirling eyes back upon the scene below. Glith is more worthy than such a pitiful group of suitors.

P'las stared at his dragon for a long moment. You want to try?

A sigh escaped the bronze. Yes. Glith should have more selection than that. She is Senior Queen. She is worthy of more than that! With that statement, the bronze rose to his feet, unfurling his wings.

P'las blinked several times, then shrugged. Okay, then... He climbed onto the bronze's back for a ride down to the Weyrbowl, where he would be able to access Tolara's weyr more easily. He patted the bronze's flank in a silent 'Good luck' and started off towards the Weyrwoman's weyr while the bronze headed to wait for Glith to take off.

There was a delicious moment of tension between the last kill and the moment when powerful legs and wings worked together to thrust the shining gold aloft. Glith soared straight up, heading into the sunlight, though eyes were averted. Up and up and up until she spun around and sped toward her chasers.

Isseth was one of the first to launch himself from the Heights in pursuit of the queen. His powerful haunches catapulted him into the air as his wings gave a propelling downward thrust, and then he was away...winging into the blue...his eyes--now a blazing red--never leaving the sensuous, glittering body of the gold. He roared in acceptance of the challenge. She would be his!

He was about to make his way to a thermal when suddenly he saw the gold change direction in an admirable aerobatic maneuver and dive towards her pursuers...his mind worked quickly to react to the sudden movement, calculating--

--On the ground, R'nar felt his mind meld with his dragon's. He was simultaneously on the ground below, his feet rooted to the dry, dusty earth, and at the same time aloft, his wings slicing through the electric blue. He breathed in through parched lips and exhaled from the cavernous depths of dragon lungs. He was R'nar and he was Isseth.

Giving his rider a quick lift to the ledge of Glith's weyr, Blazeth dipped a shoulder to help L'del slide down... and saw Glith spring skyward. The moment L'del was on solid stone, the bronze dropped off the ledge, wings spread, and quickly gained altitude. Eyes glued to the golden wonder, he hurried after her as she sped toward the sun... then blinked in surprise when she suddenly wheeled around and came at them. Quickly thinking, Blazeth began to circle the spot in the sky that the queen was soon pass through. Circling, he waited for her to come to him...

Pericolath was not far behind the other males in leaping towards the azure sky. The bronze sails spread open, beating downwards with powerful muscles to carry the male skyward. Lust began to overtake the dragon's body, seeing the sparkling gold queen taunt him and the other males.

He was admiring her beauty and strength when she turned and sped towards the group of chasers. It was too early to try and catch her. She wouldn't allow herself to be caught so soon. Only someone silly, or stupid, would try and catch her now, while she has so much energy still.

So the bronze moved out of the gold's path, trying to keep himself prepared for anything the gold might throw at them next.

The shimmering gold beauty dove through the sky, sometimes blending into the sun, sometimes showing herself in stark contrast. Morkth mirrored Pericolath, wise to the gold's tricks. He moved just off to the side. It was still much too early, the chase had barely started.

It was amusing to watch the way the silly boys reacted to her sudden dive. Though, Glith/Tolara surveyed the six men. This was all!? She'd just have to show the other's what they were missing.

The older one's knew enough to move out of her way, while those youngster's blindly put themselves in her path. As if she'd still be heading that way for long. So, that bronze from somewhere else to the right. Morkth to the left and the youngling straight ahead. Glith twisted to the left, still diving towards the ground. Morkth wouldn't be a threat even if she did get fairly close to him.

Pericolath caught the gold's movement away from him shortly after she had done it, having planned on her doing something like this. He beat his wings, heading off after the gold once again. Silly blue, Peri/P'las thought as they passed the smaller dragon in the air. They had no hope of winning. No chance. What kind of Weyr would have a bluerider as a Weyrleader?! And they'd thought a brown flying a gold was bad enough...

Kryanth kept far to the side, his body twitching with anticipation. He wished to dive after the gold, oh how beautiful her manuvers were. He sped closer but stayed far to the right, a little above. It was far to early to be worrying yet, he'd let her play, see if she could be outlasted.
Catching a thermal he was lifted above her and soared several dragon length's above waiting for an opportunity.

Seeing his prize swerve off to one side, Blazeth arrowed after her for a mere three dragonlengths before pulling up again. So, she wants to wear herself out with aerial acrobatics, huh?? the bronze thought. Well, she'll be back. She won't want to keep the flight so close to the ground. Keeping pace with the queen, he followed her movements from above, waiting to see what she would try next.

Isseth idly considered diving after the gold, dazzlingly beautiful in the shimmering oceanic blue....but knew the folly of such an impulse. Instead, he rolled aimlessly down and to the side, vaguely following the queen's path. He kept his wings spread as wide as the sails of a Tillek schooner, letting them catch and hold the watery streams of air, and waited; the thermals let him pick of speed as he skimmed along, watching hawk-like for Glith's next move. Such restraint was agonizing in the heated passions of flight-lust--he longed for speed and the feel of muscles straining with the chase--but Flights were not won by zeal alone.
