Hanna sat upon a small hillock overlooking the forest in which her family was most likely readying for sleep. The slowly darkening sky of purples, blues, and greys loomed over her, promising a clear night of sparkling stars. She smiled as a faint spring breeze brushed the meadow grasses upon her legs, and turned away from the trees, towards open country spotted with grasses, flowers, and smaller saplings in bunches. Her adoptive mother knew that she was prone to walking off in the night for a period of solitude, and thus she wouldn't be minded if she walked a little further.

Besides, the moon would be bright tonight.

She made her way down the small hill and picked her way along a small stream, humming softly to herself. She couldn't wait until the stars came out!

Vatsa was on his way home; at least that had been the plan, but he'd gotten lost again. He'd struck out a different way from the one he'd originally travelled, and he'd parted ways amicably with Zara a while back. He smiled at the thought of his pretty friend, one day he would back her way and see her again, she was a lovely lady and he was glad he had met her. At least there would be someone other than his father that he could talk to.

He stopped and looked up at the night sky.
'Hey you up there.' he called to the bright ball that was the moon.

'Wanna tell me the way home?' he shook his head, laughing at his own silliness. As if the moon would answer him. He tilted his head at the sound of running water and headed towards it.

Hanna stopped to glance at the reflection of the moon in the gurgling water of the stream--the edges blurred and shifted like they were caught in a storm. Then she noticed one speck of light, a tiny dot, off to the side. She grinned and looked up, happy to see that the stars were finally gracing the sky with their presence. Ah, they were so beautiful, and they lit her way perfectly. Too bad their light did not reach within the thick limbs of the herd's foresty center.

A voice reached her ears, and her head perked up. Huh? Was someone talking to her? No, it couldn't be. There was no one else about, at least there shouldn't be at this time of night. And she was sure that she wasn't hearing voices, for she was never deemed crazy. Therefore, the voice had to belong to a stranger. Whether the stranger was peaceful or violent was another question.

She moved along slowly, squinting her eyes to peer forward. Finally, a dark shape entered her vision and she could make out the lines of a another Soquili. And another unicorn as it was! She was sure that this stranger would be peaceful, and thus quickened her pace, now curious to see who had traveled so close to the Haven.

"Hello there!" she called when she was close enough to see that the other Soquili was a stallion. She paused at the edge of the stream, content to go no further until she learned the other's intentions. "Is there something I can help you with, sir?"

Not all unicorns would be friendly, but luckily for the quickly approaching mare this was a very friendly, and charming Unicorn, who smiled as he both saw and heard the lovely young mare.

'Hello.' he replied warmly, taking a moment to look her over as best he could with the light of the moon. She was a very pretty unicorn, and he noted that she had a normal tail just like his.

'Possibly?' he added with a little chuckle.

'I mean, I'm sure you're better at giving directions to a lost traveller than that guy is.' he tossed his head, pointing at the moon with his horn and then gave her a cheeky wink.

Hanna let her manner relax at his friendly words. She could see him more clearly now--he was quite a handsome stallion, and his coat seemed the color of the sky at dusk. Her eyes were drawn to the horn on his head, and a small gasp escaped her lips. Another half-uni? Just like her! She had never met any other of her kind, even full unicorn, and had lived her whole life with her adoptive family of ceryeni and flutters.

She giggled softly at his wink, and allowed herself to step closer, so that words could be exchanged without raising their voices.

"Then you are lost? I suppose I could help you, though I haven't traveled much in my days. Perhaps I could ask my mother? She had been many places." She smiled brightly, tossing her mane to rearrange the braid on her back.

"I haven't met many who speak to the moon. Tell me, does he reply?" she asked, warmed by his charming demeanor. Perhaps he liked the stars too? She couldn't have asked to meet a more perfect stranger.

'Yeah I'd pretty much say I'm lost. I took a route that I was sure was a short-cut back home but I seem to have wandered into an area I've not been before.' Vatsa took a moment to look at the mare again and said.

'Though I'm not very upset about being so right at this moment.'

He shook his head, acting solemn for a minute.
'Oh no. Never, and I've spoken to him so very many times.' he chuckled and then added.

'Though that makes me sound a little nuts eh? I guess I should say that sometimes I'm a little silly, but the night sky is my friend, we've whiled away the hours together often.'

Hanna smiled at his kindly statement, instantly liking his charming demeanor. She hadn't met many stallions, especially any outside the herd, and had always been hesitant to believe that they would be so kind. But this one... he was like the princes in her mother's stories. And he liked the sky, just as she did!

She gave a play frown, shaking her head a bit. "Oh my, that's not very nice. I'd think the moon would at least have to compensate you once for all the times you've kept him company." Then she smiled, taking a step closer, letting the rest of her insecurities drift away.

"I wouldn't say that you're crazy. In fact, I find that those who talk and listen to the sky often gain knowledge beyond what the physical world can give. It's... it's almost like meditation. It's a peaceful thing, and only beings like us can understand it." She gave an embarrassed little grin then, looking to the ground bashfully.

"I'm sorry, I got a little carried away. But the truth is, I often spend time out here too. Just to watch the stars. There's always stories to be had in their light. And I'm a definite lover of stories."

She looked back up at him, giving a small giggle. "Forgive me. My name is Hanna, and I'm a part of Haven, a herd that resides right over these hills. May I know your name, sir?"

'Maybe he did?' Vatsa replied, with another, more conspiratorial wink.

'After all, he did pretty much lead me into your company, and got us talking.' he smiled broadly, maybe at some point he would have to thank the moon. Though maybe when this charming young lady wasn't around.

'Well you're very nice to put a good spin on my celestial conversations. It's a better way to put it, I shall remember that.' he watched her as she looked away, taking further opportunity to look at her fine features.

'Oh, forgiveness not needed, I didn't introduce myself right away either.' he bowed to the mare, giving his name as he stood again.

'I am Vatsa, I am very pleased to meet you.'

Hanna nodded to him, bowing her neck a bit to complement his courtly charm. This stallion seemed like someone straight from a fairytale! Could he really be one of the princes that her mother had told her stories about? No, surely not... why would a prince want to speak so long with her? Surely she wasn't interesting enough for a prince... but, prince or not, she had to admit that she liked his charm.

"Vatsa," she repeated, letting a small smile grace her muzzle. "That's a good name. It's almost like it's from a fairytale." She gave a short laugh, a bit to loosen up on her strange comments (she didn't want him to think that she was weird!), and straightened her head. "It's nice to meet you too, Vatsa. Not many travelers come this way, at least at night. It can be a bit lonely, well, at least with not making friends. I do have plenty of family to take care of, that's for sure."

She tilted her head, a thought coming to mind, and gazed off down the hill, towards the forest where her family surely was sleeping. "If you'd like, I could lead you back to my herd? My mother would be able to give you directions, if you're lost. And we have the best grass and apples, if you're hungry. Though... it is the middle of the night, but a snack never hurts, right?"

She grinned again, shaking her head. "I'm sorry, sometimes I speak so much. What I really want to say is, I'd be happy if you stayed for a while. I am enjoying your complany."

'Well thanks, but I hate to tell you as you like it, although it sounds exotic, it really has a very plain meaning.' Vatsa admitted with a little grin.

'It means 'son'. Not sure about my mother's reasoning behind it.' he added.
'But there we go. Your name is pretty. And I bet has a much more interesting meaning than mine?'

Vatsa listened as she spoke. It was true that he was meant to heading home, but he wasn't sure he could face his mother. She didn't speak much to him, but she looked at him as if she could see his innermost thoughts and it was disquieting. No. He could put that off for a while longer, and in comfortable surroundings and pleasant company to boot.

'Sounds good to me. I'd appreciate your and your herd's hospitality.' he said, looking steadily at the pretty little mare.

Hanna tilted her head, running his name through her mind, and smiled pleasantly. "There's nothing wrong with a plain meaning like that. It's beautiful in its own way. You are a son, are you not? And we are all children of the sun and stars. Your name holds larger meaning that you attribute to it." She blushed a bit, looking back to the sky.

"My name has no meaning, though, except for the fact that my adoptive mother, Kanani, gave it to me. I don't know anything about my real parents, or why they left me alone, but I'm sure I'll find out in time."

Her heart leapt when he agreed to stay, and she couldn't help a small stamping of her front hooves in excitement, stirring the grass at her feet. "Delightful! My family will be very happy to meet someone like you. It seems we only have trouble these days, so it's nice to meet an admirable stranger."

She motioned at him to follow her, and set off at a comfortable pace towards the forest in the background. "You know... I've never met a half-uni like me before. It's wonderful, really... have you ever tried to heal someone? I have... but it's harder, because I don't have full uni blood."
