When you enter the classroom, you note that it is both well-aged and well-kept. There is wood paneling on the walls and the lighting is warm, but plenty bright enough to illuminate the hardwood desks. Mrs. Eagle Owl, the teacher for this class, placidly blinks her large, round eyes at you from across her great desk, and smiles serenely as everyone takes their places. Moments later, class begins:

Quote:
The teacher asks the students to turn to page 329 in their textbooks, therein lies a copy of The Raven, by Edgar Allen Poe. The students are to split into pairs and together, write a paragraph as to their joint thoughts on the piece.

Post Order: Raven, Widow
PostPosted: Fri Feb 18, 2011 12:43 am

Split into pairs, huh? Glancing down at his textbook, the young Raven grinned eagerly.  Perfect piece too.  His golden eyes gazed about as he thought.  Who to partner with...?  That was when his gaze caught a familiar face.  Moving to sit beside her in a rather smooth move, he grinned, "Hello again, Miss Widow!"  Rae crooned, leaning on his book, "Wanna do the assignment together?"

Widow already had the page opened neatly in front of herself, reading silently. All her stationary was organized in an orderly fashion to one side of the book. One pair of hands was folded on the desk, the other pair placed delicately on her lap. The picture of a model student. Minus, of course, the fact that her pencil cases, pens and even her writing paper all matched her dark, haunting fashion sense.

She looked up at once at the familiar voice, offering one of her placid smiles. "Ah, is that a familiar voice I hear~?" She chimed charmingly. "Of course, I would love to work with you,"

He grinned eagerly, and leaned over the book, "Great! "  His voice was a chirp, a bright noise of eager anticipation, "Good poem choice too, huh?  I really like this one."  HIs wings were neatly tucked against his back, and his goggles hung loose.  Glancing over to her, he thought for a sec.  So we're supposed to write a paragraph about what we think.....That's gonna be fun, especially for us, huh!"

Widow moved one of her decorative notepads in between the both of them, having already neatly scrawled the title of the poem at the top of the page. "One of my very favorites," She purred, "It should be very fun for us indeed~"

She tapped her pen lightly against the black latex lips of her mask for a moment, considering the poem quietly. "Though...I could write pages on this particular poem. Summarizing it may be difficult. Have you any thoughts, dearest one?"

"....I don't know if I'd be able to in only a paragraph, Miss Widow.  Poe was a brilliant, influential man."  Pulling out his own notepad. a soft indigo paper, bound in a black notepad, he flipped it open, and scrawled in elegant cursive script "The Raven".  Glancing back over at her, he rested his head on his hand, pencil tapping the paper, "Words come in abundance with this poem....How're we supposed to do this?"

"Perhaps..." She began slowly, glossy black eyes seeming to look into the distance in thought. "Merely speak of our admiration? Should they require us to talk in detail about the specifics of his genious, we shall be more then happy to, am I right?" She looks contemplative. "If we manage to keep it breif, it should be easy enough to come up with just a paragraph?"

He grinned, "Yeah!  That makes a lot of sense, Miss Widow.  I mean, if we just detail what we think of him...or this work, it would be easy. I mean.  Keep it short and sweet."  Running his hand through messy black hair, he wondered at the idea of it.  Hmm...How to work it?  It would take a minute to think about it.

She nodded, with one of her light smiles, tapping her pen lightly o her notebook for a moment in thought. "Mm, I think...." She paused, beginning to write. "I think speaking of his influence would be a good way to begin. Not just on ourselves, but on others who have read his work. Right?" She wrote quickly, but what looked like it would produce a messy scrawl seemed to come out as a very fancy, curvy old script

Rae grinned, "Yeah. He's iconic, after all! He's influenced so much." He sounded so enthralled, just by talking about Poe. His eyes sparkled as his own pen started moving, jotting down small bits and scraps of thoughts, "After all, It's kinda hard for me to not love the poem~ I'm in it after all." His attempt at a laaame joke.

Widow gave a light giggle, already busily scrawling notes in her strangely neat cursive. "It is not too glorifying of you, however, should you like that people are afraid of your very image because of this very poem, one could consider it...reverse praise. For those of us who appreciate such things." Her tone vaguely indicated that she might be one of those people, and indeed she took anyone's comment on her, be they intentioned good or bad, to be a fantastic compliment. She wasn't one to get wrapped up in hate or sadness, despite what her appearance would indicate.

He grinned wickedly, "Hey, I don't have a problem with people being scared of my image. They should be~" The bird's voice was a low purr, and he shifted to keep writing, "I liked my portrayal." Sure, it wasn't HIM him, but still. It made him delighted to know that it was influential to his own image. WIngs flared slightly, and he murmured, "So, do we just want to point out influence?"

Already having filled over half a page with notes, she leaned over slightly to observe what the Raven had written down. "Well, I have spoken of the way in which there are very few people who do not recognize the name of this poem, and that the image of a Raven, true form of otherwise, invokes the instant recall of this poem- however much or little the viewer has read it." She pushed her book closer to him, indicating what she had written with the back end of her pen. "See, here,"

He nodded, and showed her his own, "Also taking into account Poe's views on death that are reflected in the poem, it really proves an interesting account, all in all. Not too many who read the Raven actually read into it." It was true. Too many people took the poem at face value, after all.

Looking impressed, Widow nodded and appended this view quickly onto the end of her own notes. "Oh, /indeed/," She said, showing some hint of enthusiasm, "His own fears, perhaps even religious views..." She continued to talk as she added more and more to the end of her essay, quickly reaching the end of her first page of notes, before turning it over and continuing on the opposite side. She paused for a beat, considering her notes. "Hmm. Is this too much?"

Nodding seriously, he grinned, "He was scared of Death I think." Glancing at her paper, he chuckled low in his throat, "Nah. This many notes between the two of us, we can get a paragraph condensed easily. I mean, we could even do it on the idiocy of the people who normally read the poem." Rae knew that was mean, but he was kinda happy to think that he wasn't every other student.

Widow nodded thoughtfully in response, tapping her pen absently on her plastic bottom lip for a moment. "Indeed. I doubt perhaps even the teacher woud have such an appreciation of the inner workings of the poem, nor would they expect students of our age to. Something simple would suffice~" As usual, she said this with no hint of malice in her voice. There was, however, the slightest traces of amusement.

Sighing, he pulled a face, "Yeah....Don't remind me. It's stupid, really." He sounded minorly bitter about it, "Something simple would work....Maybe just a paragraph on how Poe's poem put him on the map of becoming an icon in horror literature?"

Widow nodded, beginning to write almost at once, "Oh, yes, that would be absolutely perfect~" She cooed, sounding quite impressed in her own way. While the other children did not bother her, it was clear she enjoyed having a more intellectual and thoughtful individual such as herself around to share her thoughts with.

Rae nodded, using his pen to scrawl out in a beautiful modern cursive an outline of the paragraph.  Her script was more legible, but this worked for now.  The outline lay out the three points of the paragraph, and when he was done, he grinned at her, "That should do."  He enjoyed having an intellectual like her around.  It meant he got to exercise his brain, unlike with most of the other students.

Widow gave her light tinkling giggle, leaning over a little to peer at Raven's notes. "Oh, very good. I'm particularly fond of your handwriting~" She said brightly, actually seeming somewhat enthusiastic rather then her usual airy and friendly tone. She looked between their notes for a moment to compare, checking that everything had been written down properly, before nodding. "It seems we've finished in a satisfactory manner. So quickly, too~" She smiled, the expression slightly more visible on her mask. "Shall we hand it in?"

He grinned, brightly, nodding, making sure he liked her handwriting as well, "I love yours.  It's so elegant."  Leaning against her shoulder for a moment, the raven was delighted by their awesome teamwork, "Oh totally~"  His smirk was wide, "We totally have to."

Far from her absent kindliness, Widow actually felt a small swell of happiness at the boy's comment, unable to stop herself from smiling back at the cheeky smirk on his face. She stood, beginning to neatly pack up her things in a small stack, before taking both of their papers. "We shall meet again, dear Raven~" She said lightly, then turned and took the papers up to the teacher's desk.

He watched her move, his heart fluttering a bit, and a tiny flush lighting his face, "Y-yeah....Later..."  He didn't know why....He'd never blushed like this...or felt this wierd.  Cooties?  Nah....Widow was too cool for those.  Shrugging it off, the bird turned and followed her out, grinning a bit more sincerely than usual.
