Haha, one of my good friends and I have been musical rivals since seventh grade. She's always been like one or two chairs ahead of me! Although I beat her in county last year and in auditions for school band this year (although she beat me in a challenge). =P
But we're not terribly concerned, as long as we both play our music well!

the clarient section at my school is very competitive. Not so much the lower half, but the three good players are always at eachothers throats. We have Brittany, the only other upperclassmen in the section. She is really good. Except she always steals my first parts, which doesnt bug me nearly as much as when Savanah does. Savannah is only a sophomore, but she is the third best clari player. Her tone quality could be a bit better, and sometimes she acts like she doesn't really want to be there, but I can tell she really likes band, just that she doesn't like our band persay. Annoyingly, its usually her and Brittany on first, which bugs me since technically I am first chair and secodn parts tend to ebe too easy for me and I tend to make the other players look bad, which makes me feel bad.(The other claris basially suck. One got 155 out of 1000 on his regionals scores,a nd hes the best of the lower half. None of them can read music very well depsite my efforts to teach them.)

Back in the day, one of my section leaders played a solo that my boyfriend said was "amazing". Being my boyfriend's opinion and all, I wanted to play that solo in an "amazing" way, too. It turns out that he wants a copy of my solo to listen to. When asked whether he liked mine or my section leader's performance better, he simply said something like "Well, I never asked for a copy of her solo, did I?"
That's the best example I have, unless you want to hear me rant about my current section leader's leadership skills...

Everyone that I feel is at my skill level plays a different instrument than me, so I don't consider it a rivalry. Percussion =/= the rest of the band And the only percussionists that have been better than me graduated or are otherwise older and more experienced, so that's justified. I've almost always been the best percussionist o uo;; I've always been friends with my fellow musicians, especially when we're on equal ground.
I've found that in college, everyone wants everyone to be the best they can be. It's a very productive environment.

Meh..kind of. One of my friends goes to a school in the city (I go to a school in the suburbs, where nothing happens. LOL) is a year older than me and is REALLY good at Bass clarinet. I dont know, he kinda beat me at select band, and blah blah blah. Yeah, Im striving to get into first band, because of him. LOL

This other tenor sax dude whose in gr.10 (i'm in gr.9). But then again he practices a lot, like he brings his sax home, while i on the other hand doesn't practice at all. Lets just say he's the best in our section and i'm the second best sweatdrop

Oh, yes. Yes I do. It doesn't help that I'm dating her ex...whom she broke up with because he was too clingy and bought her too much jewelry (qualities that I do quite like..)
Anywho. We're always competing for first flute parts (I prefer second, though), solos, auditions, etc etc...but we realize that her rhythm will always beat out mine, and my tone will always be better than hers, so it's all good. =]

Lol, yeah, my friend Liz and I have been rivals since sixth grade. We're freshman now, so we don't compete for solo's or anything, but we are both very good for our age and we're always arguing about who's better (all in good fun, of course)

I play the bass Clarinet, and for the longest time, i thought I was the only one in my school, but some saxaphone player in the upper bands (I'm a freshman) plays the bass clarinet. I have a really long case, because my clarinet doesn't come apart in the middle, while his does. I asked my band teacher why I got the big heavy, wooden case, and he said that my clarinet plays better. The other bass clarinetist plays a different type of clarinet then mine, Mines a Bundy, and when mine broke, I used a back, same as his, (different clarinet though) and it sucked! Mine is so much better then his. My even as a stand so it can sit on the floor, his doesn't. We where walking to a room for contest, and he was walking behind me. I had my bass clarinet at my side, and I heard him say, "Awe... how come she get's a bass clarinet stand." That just made me feel speciel. I kind of don't know it we're rivals or not. The other day, he walked past me in the band room and said hi. DOn't really know what that means.
next year, I will be in the same band class as him, and I will play the contra bass clarinet ( my teacher has four of them) so then i will be speciel, he can still play the bass, but I will play the contra bass, so... no more rival.

Well, Playing contra bass doesnt really eliminate rivals.. there will be people from other schools trying out for all state and etc... Im playing contra alto this year, Im only one of the two contras...No real competition, but theres still something there.
