He was as understanding as he could be. After all, he came home how often, cut, bleeding, with a new broken bone even? God knew how many times he'd winced from a bruise, unable to hide the marks on his body. The marks of his job as a senshi. With the negaverse gather it's forces in new waves, and youma getting faster and harder to kill, Castor was taking his game up a notch, directly engaging in combat in the open, he didn't take chances with leaving them alive. He couldn't. How many had fallen? Hard to say, each one blurred next to the youma, all them had to fall. He couldn't see them as anything but monsters. It was the only way he could find he was able to stomach what he had to do. But watching Audrey coming home with bruises of her own set him off. He was willing to take her word for it. Accidents. But accidents piled up. Watching her cry out when he held her made him worry, it made him wonder. Audrey was a fighter in her own way, but not like him, she didn't have a record of street fighting. She was normal, she was the girl next door. She was his everything.
So to see his everything in pain drove Elzo nuts. Tonight was the breaking point. In the past it had been little bumps and bruises but tonight she looked like she took an outright beating. The way they looked as no accident. Someone had done this to her. Male pride surged as he watched her, seeing aglimpse of the discolored skin. Elzo was pissed. Who ever had done this to Audrey would pay. But first, to find who'd done it.
Arms wrapped around her and Elzo nuzzled her neck, his touch as gentle as it could be. "Audrey..." His voice was a whisper. "You okay?" He couldn't ask outright, she'd deny it. He had to wiggle it out of her. And he was going to have answer. He was going to wiggle her all night if he had too.

Taranis was an a*****e. There was a growing list of expletives in the diary that was even now sandwiched between her pile of theoretical mathematics texts, detailing exactly how displeased the Negaverse general was with the Senshi of Sand. He'd evaded her with his little girlfriend from inside a windowless closet. It was disturbing, to say the very least. If they had all learned to teleport somehow...she'd had to report it. It was shameful. At the very least.
Now Elzo was clinging to her again, quietly asking about the bruises. It was one thing to be clumsy, but people at the school were starting to wonder where they were coming from as well. Of course, they all thought she was in an abusive relationship! It was fine when they were hidden under her clothes. Nobody really touched the bluenette and she could be pretty casual about the aches and pains of her fights. But now one side of her face was a bruised mess from where she'd not only gotten smacked with a ball of mud, but where Tanzanite had sent her through a wall. That had made her back a beautiful mosaic of bruises, causing her to stiffen as Elzo's hands lingered.
Sleeping wasn't easy these days either.
"I'm fine. You worry too much! I mean, some idiot comes careening out of a classroom because he fell asleep in lecture and didn't realize the prof let everyone go, so he just flies out of a door and BAM! Into my face!" Her smile was wide, probably too wide, and Audrey's voice was as cheerfully exasperated as she could make it. Unfortunately, as Ursula had seen, Audrey was a s**t actor. Something was wrong...but what?

If he'd heard the rumors he would have been livid. He'd sooner kill himself then harm Audrey. She was his rock, she was the one thing that gave him hope when he didn't have any left. She was the reason he fought now. Serenity was a dream, Audrey was his reality. And when Elzo could feel her in his arms, and hear the news echo words of death that the he knew to be at the hands of the negaverse... Audrey was his reality, she was his everything. He fought for her, and she didn't know it, she never would. He wanted to make the world safe for her, so her didn't have to worry. Worry like he was now, with the yellow and purple peeks from the back of her shirt. Had she been attacked? Had another senshi needed to save her? Thoughts filtered in and out. But under it was abitterness of the fact. He wasn't by her side, he couldn't protect her. What if something happened? What if. A hundred chances at death could happen, and it made him sick to know he might not be there when she needed him most.
All the reason why he wanted to know what was causing the bruises, her pain. "Audrey." Her name was enough. He was taking a tone with her. He'd been with her long enough, close to enough to tell when she was outright lying. And this was one of those times. Her eyes flicked in a way, her weight would shift just so, and little actions betrayed a hidden truth. One problem with having Elzo so close and in his love for her, in his attention to her, each quirk he found endearing, he could find others that could offer another glimpse into her. "Please." He didn't want to ask but if she tried to avoid it..he'd press. "Please Audrey?"

Well she had been attacked but it was clearly she who had started that fight with Taranis. The one that had caused the serious damage which was even now causing this friction in her relationship. Normally Audrey strode around the house in one of Elzo's work shirts and a pair of shorts, carelessly showing skin to the man who adored her so fully. But with the bruises came out the tight, dark undershirts and thick tights so that every part of her body was covered from head to toe by cloth or hair. The hardest part was not hiding the existence of the bruises. The hardest part was hiding that the bruises healed ten times faster than they should have.
These had been received only two days prior, but were already yellowing and easier to hide. Elzo was asking questions and she had absolutely zero way to alibi them. Yes, she could say that Aree had given them to her in one of her episodes, but then Elzo would go tearing over there to set the violet-haired young woman straight. Though she had snuck in that night after the worst of the pain had faded, dulled behind a fresh star seed to accelerate the process and he'd already been asleep.
Her mind was working furiously, and her head shook briefly. "Please what, Elzo? I'm confused." Now she refused to look at him, getting up as quickly as she could without wincing to go and forage in the refrigerator. Audrey's parents hadn't ever really paid attention to her injuries, assuming their girl was just clumsy. Elzo knew better. He watched her, knew she was graceful, and agile.
Clumsy wasn't cutting it anymore.

She was avoiding the question. Or just the obvious. Either way, Elzo wasn't about to let her go. Not this time. "What happened Audrey?" His voice was firm and loud, and his general tone reeked of male dominance. He wanted to be 'the man'. He wanted be able to defend her for whatever it was the caused her pain. Testosterone fueled male affection. Elzo had it. "Don't lie to me either." He found her in front of the fridge, one arm blocking her path, the other, giving her hair a small pull. "I'm worried." A small flicker of pain could be heard in his voice. Her hurt was his own hurt in somewhat strange way.
Sinking down his forehead pressed to her own. "Bruises like those didn't come from being shoved around. Is there something I should know? Is Aree hurting you in..an episode?" The girl was a wild card. One minute she was fine the next she was ready to bit his head off. Sometimes to wondered if she was even sane to start with. "Or is some a*****e at school picking on you?" That didn't sound like college. More like a 5th grader bully problem. "Please, tell me what is going on."

Well that was new. Audrey stood there a bit poleaxed by Elzo's tone and the way he seemed to somehow...beef up. Had he always been that tall? Or was that just him feeling all hulky and manly to protect her? All of it was new and just a little touching, but it wasn't going to get him any iota of the truth. How could you tell your boyfriend that you gotten the bruises because you were about to kill someone, and then you'd told a fanatic her goddess was false?
You couldn't. At all. In the back of her mind, Audrey was considering that she might have possibly not have thought this moving in with Elzo thing through as fully as she thought she had. It made her deliriously happy to wake up with him every day, and be there every evening together when their schedules permitted them to be. But then things like this happened and well...they were painful. More painful than the bruises, for sure.
Her mouth opened, closed again, and a low hum sounded in her throat before speaking. "Aree wouldn't hurt me." Tanzanite would, but that was something altogether different. "Also, you know how I handle bullies. I can take care of myself...most of the time." Fingers were tangling at the curly edges of her hair, eyes downcast even as their foreheads rested together. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you I don't really understand how I got hurt, would you?" It was worth asking, honestly.

This whole macho thing wasn't new for Elzo in some ways. He'd always been a protective sort, but he'd never had someone he cared for like he cared for Audrey. Sure, he'd be macho for girls in general but none were HIS girl. None of them meant as much to him as she did. And seeing her standing there with multicolored skin made hit gut clench with worry. Doubt for her safety wasn't something he wanted to feel. He wanted to know she'd be able to come home unscathed, unharmed. Lips kissed the back of her neck. "Audrey..." The tone was more demanding this time, a bit chastising. She was obviously hiding something from him, and it was...concerning. She shouldn't hide something like this from him, she shouldn't have to.
"Most of the time isn't all of them. And who knows? We've seen how insane this city is, with the whole winter storm in the city center, the constant terrorism. I'm worried for you." Arms wrapped around her. "Has someone been trying to hurt you? Did someone try to take advantage of you?" Arms gripped her tighter at this thought. "What is going on? Tell me." It wasn't a question that time.

There were two options at this point. She could either betray herself and the Negaverse in the second-worst way possible and tell Elzo exactly what had happened. Maybe she could make him believe that the senshi were wrong, wrong in ways he could never understand. But he might mention it to someone....Elzo had a bit of a loud mouth. It wasn't that she didn't trust him to accept her! Except she did. And her safety was paramount to any trust she may or may not lose at this point.
So it was the second option. Trying not to wince as he pressed in against her bruised back, Audrey didn't have to lie to look upset. "I don't know what happened, okay?!" It burst out in a rush of anger and anguish. It was the truth. She had no idea why Tanzanite had gone so insane in that moment and why everything was falling apart. "I didn't make it to math lab the other night." Also the truth; she'd been too busy fighting the vanishing Taranis. "All I know is that I was doing my thing, and then something threw me against a wall. I don't remember anything else after the except I hurt a lot, and I was so tired." The typical story for a youma attack these days. She shook him off, striding into the living room and kicking at the couch.
Audrey never really had to act angry. When she was angry, it came out all by itself.
"I didn't want to tell you because then you'd start wanting to shelve work and escort me around places. I love you, but you don't need to go with me everywhere. And damn it, everyone already thinks you beat me up. I won't stand for it! So I hide the bruises, and pretend like everything is okay, but I just don't know what is going on in this damn city anymore!" Her breath hitched at the end of the tirade. "I spent Christmas Eve running through a battlefield looking for you! How is that even normal?" It was an outburst coming dangerously close to hysterics and once that got going, who knew what was going to spill out.
So instead of that she stopped, shoulders slumped, and sank to the couch to hug a pillow. "I don't know what happened, and that scares me. I don't like being unsure or scared, Elzo." The gospel truth, right there, her dark honey eyes looking straight into his own.

"Audrey!" She was out of his arms and Elzo felt..insulted. She was hurt and she wasn't letting him help her. Did she not know how it looked? How he felt seeing her in pain? Pain he could have prevented? As illogical as it was he was her man, he should be able to protect her. "You're getting hurt. ******** hell, last thing I want to to hear your name on the news. What kind of a wall does that Audrey? What monster jumped you? Did they take your money? Did they do more you won't let me see? Did they-" His voice died. He'd seen what men could do. What normal humans could do, much less a youma or negaverse agent. "******** hell. Do I have to go to work late or take a few extra bits off to drive you? This hasn't just happened once Audrey! This city isn't safe!" His own voice was rising. His anger at it all, at his weakness to stop it, prevent it. He was an eternal senshi, and he couldn't even protect the woman he loved.
Watching her crumple into the cushions broke his heart. Things should be like this. The world shouldn't be like this. They shouldn't be like this. "Baby, I'm just worried okay? I don't like seeing you hurt." He looked over the couch at her. "I don't like not being able to keep you safe." And there is was.
Macho male pride.

Frustrated and hating the hurt in Elzo's voice, Audrey simply stood up and stripped off her top to stand there in her bra. Hands dragged at her hair, pulling until her back was exposed to him. The mottled pattern of bruising was easy to see then, falling heaviest on the shoulder blades and top curve of her spine where the impact of the wall had landed. Less visible though nonetheless there, were the scars that had come from various other fights: Regulus' cuts, the long discolored line down her arm where falling off a building had skinned it, countless skinned knees.
Negaverse magic inside of her had healed them quickly and the scarring was minimal...but she could always find them. "That's all there is. My temple where the door hit me and then on my back where I hit the wall. I know it's not safe, but I can't just live in a bubble. I know you want to keep me safe. I love that you care enough but you might have ended up hurt too." Standing on the couch and balancing her weight, Audrey reached over and cupped Elzo's face in her hands.
"I'm fine. Really. I woke up with all my stuff and nobody'd touched me except for whatever threw me against a wall. I'd say I'm pretty lucky, considering." Leaning in, she kissed him lightly. Kisses made everything better right? Okay, so she might have been trying to distract him, yet wasn't entirely confident that she had the power to do so. Ever. "Just gotta trust me to stay away from trouble, kay? I love you." It was the best she could do.

Her reaction in flamed him. The fire and fear in his gut made him feel sick. As she spoke, all Elzo could hear, all he could see, was the worst cases scenarios running. This is was her being lucky. Before he could scream at her about how that was it, she was getting ride to and from school. Or her own car. No more buses. He was going to buy her a small car. A SAFE car. Hell, he was going to hire a body guard for her. No, ******** that idea. He was a man, her man, and he would guard her body. He was-
Under her shadow, the feeling of her lips on his calming him, easing all that tension away. As she pulled away, his hands rested on her hips. as his eyes looked down at her body, fingers traced the scars. He'd not asked on some. On others he just accepted. But in his eyes they didn't mar her. To him they were another part of her, a part of the woman he loved. "I love you Audrey." Pulling her off the couch and back into his arms, he was sure to keep his hands from touching the discolored skin. "The thought I might loose you...I don't want that to happen. Never. I-" His head sank and his eyes hid behind messy bangs.
"Let me be a macho man for you. Let me protect you. Please. I can't stand seeing you like this. I hate it." He ignored his own trips to the hospital, his own mysterious wounds. His he could explain. Old gangs. Bar fights. He tried being a macho man for some chick on the streets. But for Audrey, whatever, whoever was doing this to hurt made Elzo's blood boil. This wasn't the world he wanted for her.

It wasn't the world either of them really wanted, but it was the world they were thrown into without any warning of what it really meant. At the same time even! There was some deity somewhere in the cosmos sitting on their cloud laughing at the pair that had no idea how truly tied together their lives were, hiding things that they could have shared and helped each other through.
Instead, Audrey cuddled in against Elzo and held on as tightly as she could without hurting herself; it was still fairly tight. "You couldn't get rid of me if you tried. I'm done being stupid and dumping you and the last thing I'd do is go get into trouble again....but we might be able to come to an arrangement." Curls fell down over her shoulder and into her face, golden eyes looking up through her lashes. It was meant to be alluring and whether or not it really was came as a mystery to the bluenette.
But it worked on Elzo. Most of the time.
"I'll let you start driving me around." There was a visible lightening in him at that, she could tell. Really, it cost her nothing to have him drop her off in front of Vicky's house or Aree's apartment building, or even at the campus library. It took no effort at all to find somewhere and teleport before coming back and calling him to pick her up. It was just going to take a little extra time and cleverness. She had them in spades.
"But I want to meet your parents."

Victory. Sweet sweet victory. Audrey would let him a macho male and be the protective boyfriend he so wanted to be. Sure, he knew it was very old school and crap but how could he just let things carry on like they were? She was getting hurt, he wasn't there to protect her. Now he could be. At least part of the time. Perfection, easy sleep would come for him tonight and maybe now she would ba eable to heal an-
"NO." As alluring as she looked, (oh how she made him melt like putty), what she was asking was the one thing he had been adamant about. She'd not have to deal with his family. even. Not until she had to. Elzo loathed the idea of putting her anywhere near his family. Marlo was sane and could be trusted. The rest of his family? God no. they'd kill her. Eat her alive. If not father then his grandfather. If not them then his grandmothers. Those old bats would try anything to see her married to her grandson. ANYTHING. Elzo wanted her to marry him sure, but on her own terms. When they were ready.
"I don't care if they're in town, we are not seeing them."

"Then I'm going to renew my bus pass." Arms folded across her chest and the curls were flipped back so that Elzo could see she was infinitely serious. They could fight about this if they really wanted, but Audrey wasn't going to budge an inch on the matter. Nothing meant more to her than the freedom to do what she wanted when she wanted to do it, and some of that was being sacrificed for Elzo's peace of mind.
He could make this small sacrifice so that she could feel more secure in her decision to marry him. Thinking this, a hand moved out to point at the velvet box on the mantle, mouth in a straight line. "If you ever want that to be a reality, you have to understand that I need to know them. They have to know me. They'll be my family Elzo, and I don't want my family to be a bunch of strangers." The whole idea was alien to her!
"All I'm asking for is one meeting. We don't have to see them after that, but I want to know who I'm taking on, okay? I've heard the stories from you guys and from Jada, but I want to be able to meet them. I want them to like me. Please Elzo? Please?" It was probably the closest she would ever get to begging. Audrey didn't think, when bargaining, you had to say please.
It was a deal!
He could now take it or leave it.

Oh s**t she was dead set on this wasn't she? Elzo felt like hitting a wall with his head. A brick wall. "No, I'm not letting you ride the bus. I'd sooner let you drive my car-" he glared at her, "but I can't. Knowing you, you'd want to test the speed and god...a nice car doesn't deter criminals. It attracts them. Just- AUGH." Hand flew up in the air. She wouldn't budge. The cute stubbornness he loved about her wouldn't let her. While he wouldn't change her....okay ******** if he could he'd have a perfect world and then she wouldn't need to object to giving up the bus for him driving her and they wouldn't be fighting and then- ******** again this was a fight wasn't it?
Elzo groaned. "You really want to meet them don't you?" He swallowed. She was everything to him, and to show her the worst side of his life, the side he couldn't even stand- He all but throwing the ring at him was a clear fact. He wanted her in his life. Part of his life was his family, hated and twisted or not. She would a Xanis, and she would be a part of his world, no two ways about it. "You're dead set on it?" Her lips were in a firm line. She was. Damn her she was. He didn't realize he'd been pacing. God he hated it. She was right. Once again, his beautifully smart girlfriend was right.
"One meeting. One. Publicly and Marlo will be joining us. Like hell I'm taking you alone. Mari- my mother would flay you alive, and Gi-" his throat tightened. He all but forced the word out. "My father would do anything to sabotage us. Marlo will have to come. He'd make sure you wouldn't get cornered if I'd get pulled away." hands wrapped in her's. He couldn't help it. the idea make him more nervous then her walking alone at night. "Just one meeting. All you'll get from me."
