Hey, I think it's cool that you can play by ear. I was taught to read sheet music first, and it took me a while to learn how to play by ear. I learned while playing with a garage band, and then in my college jazz band; along with learning guitar and the circle of fifths, I've got a good grip of playing sax by ear biggrin
What instrument do you play?

I learned how to play piano by ear, but when I learned how to play horn, I learned how to read music. The nice thing about learning by ear is it makes sight reading easier and intonation better

Counting was an after-thought to my first instructor so I learned to play my flute and trumpet by ear when surrounded by the whole band..I listen for cues from the other sections for when to jump in. I do read music once I know where to jump in at. My violin however I have to read the whole time and count the whole time or I am completely lost....it's kinda strange

I've always been able to play by ear . I played around with the piano when I was 4, and I would be able to run through scales without help even if I only heard a scale once, and I could play Fur Elise, or the melody to it anyway. [I wasn't some super freak baby thing that played excellent piano compositions when I was like five months old or something! Dx] When I was in sixth grade (When I learned to play alto saxophone), I played by ear on my own and read sheet music. It's like now, I can listen to Fudge fugue, and play the whole alto part, and I have never seen the sheet music before.
I've also fiddled around with Clarinet, and have learned to play the first movement of Fantasiestucke (look it up on youtube, but type in han kim after the name of the piece. He does a good job on it), and Oblivion by Astor Piazallo or something like that.

I learned playing violin by notes first then I forgot and played by how many fingers to play. So if I see a quarter note on A=2 fingers =B I play 2 or three fingers
