This is a private roleplay between Sarangerel [Oooka] and Huojin [Kotaline].

Setting

A strapping young lad saves a damsel in distress from a fierce monster!
PostPosted: Fri Jan 28, 2011 11:11 am

The docks where a new experience for the long haired Mongolian; she had moved to the city just a few months ago however this was the first real time she was allowed to wonder on her own, well as alone as she could ever be. Usually her guardian would be walking by her side, Hua was very protective of Sara however the green eyed girl knew that the motherly attitude she had towards her went beyond duty. Herself and Hua were friends, a close bond had been formed from the amount of time the two had been living together in the Imperial Palace. Truth be told she would simply not know what to do if Hua had not been assigned as her protector, she had helped her more than she would ever be able to express.

Her blue boots clanged against the floor as she wondered through the market, every so often stopping to look at what goods the traders had to offer. This whole place was one million miles away from the small farming village in which she was raised. Living on a farm meant she had to cope with many things, mud, animal births, slaughtering; however there was one thing she never got used to.... MICE! With their evil beady eyes and their twitchy whiskers nothing was more horrifying to her than a mouse. The very thought of seeing one of those long cord like tails made her want to vomit.

She continued to wonder, this time going of the main path and into the back alleys. She was enjoying the walk, the sea breeze felt lovely against her tanned skin and the sound of seagulls was one she enjoyed. Turning one corner she soon came to the realisation that she had come to a dead end. A wall was blocking her way and besides a few crates there was nothing much to see. Smiling at the fact that she clearly did not know where she was going she spun to take another route only to see one of those... THINGS!

It had snuck up behind her, she swore to every spirit she worshiped that the beast could smell her fear and made its presence known for the soul reason to make her cry. She froze, eyes wide and long green strands on end, all was quiet and then the creature let out a squeak. Sara saw it as a battle cry and darted backwards, leaping up the crates like a monkey on steroids until she was kneeled on all fours at the top of the pile. The whole thing could only be described as like watching a cat flee up a tree to escape a dog, Sara was no athlete but put a mouse near her and she suddenly turned into super women.

The mouse sniffed and wondered forward to nibble on some food that was lurking about just in front of the crates. She cringed; it was waiting for her to come down. Heaven knows what she was expecting it to do however she was reacting to it like many people would react to a demon! She shook nervously not knowing what to do. The monster had her trapped, so she did all that she could. “P-please... help... m-me...” She called out stuttering, she did not shout, thinking any loud noise would aggravate her captor.

Huojin was on his knees.

In fact, he was crawling carefully around a corner, a lid with holes in it in his mouth, and a jar under his arm. He was hunting, and unlike the more traditionally manly Lunarians that might be in the countryside, he was hunting rats and mice. Huojin kept them as pets, and his workshop was full or rodents and birds to keep him company. One of his rats had just died, so he needed a replacement, and there were plenty that wouldn't be missed down by the docks.

Huojin burned his own eyebrows off on a regular basis. Rat-based diseases held no fear for him.

He turned the corner, and with a battle yelp, scopped the rat up in the jar, pressing the lid on firmly. Looking at his captive, he announced, "Your name is Haozi." If there was one thing that the Sun family lacked, it was originality with names.

Now that he had caught the mouse, he stodd up, dusting himself off, and that was when he finally saw he wasn't alone. Grinning sheepishly, he said, "Oh, hello! I didn't know I was the only one who had business in this dark alleyway! I've heard criminals like them, but you don't really look like the type. Are you in the process of breaking the law? I won't bother you if you are, I just wanted the rat, honest."
PostPosted: Sat Feb 05, 2011 7:22 am

It was almost dream like, here she was cowering up a tower and out of nowhere someone had come to her rescue. The mouse was trapped and even though she was still uncomfortable that it was still around she knew it could no longer get to her. She blinked and slid to the end of the box before jumping back down onto ground level. A small blush came onto her face; she must have looked absolutely ridiculous! Then her green eyes widened as the blonde boy talked. He seemed... very cheerful.

“B-breaking the law...” She mumbled to herself, it took a while to realise what he was actually asking her and when she did she waved her arms in front of her frantically. “No, no, no nothing like that I just lost my way and then that thing came out and chased me down here, I would never do such a thing!” She exclaimed her heart beating at quite some pace in her breast to show how nervous she had become. She hoped he did not think she was capable of such a thing, after all she was loyal to the Emperor so she would never even think about going against his laws, not after all the Legion had done for her.

She let out a nervous chuckle and shook her head. “T-thank you for saving me... I am t-terrified of mice...” She mumbled putting her hands together and bowing in his direction. “My name is Sara.” She also added, she knew she was not in his debt and felt bad she did not have anything to repay him with. Even if it was not his attention he had done her a huge favour and she felt almost duty bound to repay him! She stood up straight and pushed her long teal hair behind her, waiting to hear the name of her savour!

"Actually, it's a small rat," Huojin offered unhelpfully, lifting up the jar so she could see. "My mother makes that mistake all the time, too! Also, you're welcome, I think." He had already accidentally saved a damsel and it wasn't even noon, so he figured the day was going to be pretty productive. Grinning lopsidedly at her, he stuck out his free hand. "Sun Huojin, demolitions expert and student at your service. Glad to know you're not a criminal! I've never met one of them before, and though I usually like new experiences, I don't think I'd be too keen to try that one in particular."

He considered the statement for a moment, and then confirmed, "Yep, definitely wouldn't. Anyway, it was no problem to save you, I was just trying to get a pet to replace the one that died last month." That caused hs smile to falter a little, but then it perked back up. "I gave it a month before getting a new one so the old one wouldn't haunt me everywhere." Just the thought of ghosts made him queasy, so Huojin was extra careful.

Sara backed up slightly as he showed her the creature. She really really hated mi- small rats! They spread disease and in general were just.... BLAH! She gulped and then saw him lift her hand to her, she did not want to be rude but at the same time did not want to reach out in case the rat broke the jar and pounced at her somehow. Okay, maybe she was overestimating the deadliness of the animal however to her it made perfect sense, they were evil! She took in a deep breath and reached out to take his hand. “I-its a pleasure to meet you Huojin!” She greeted giving it a shake and then pulling it back to rest it on her chest.

She smiled and nodded her head at his statement. “I can understand that, criminals are dangerous I would not want to meet one either...” Of cause when you thought about them you always presumed the worst, murderers, thieves and rapists. It made her wonder if they were any around here! He said this is where they usually hung around! Her eyes widened and she shivered, at least he was here, she did not want to be on her own around these parts anymore that was for sure! She tilted her head as his comment.

“Demolitions expert... what does that mean?” She mumbled not knowing such a profession, hoping she would not been seen as stupid for her lack of knowledge. Whatever it was it sounded exciting and clearly he must be good at it or he would not have called himself one! Then the topic quickly turned to something she was very familiar with indeed. “Ghosts? Oh... t-they only haunt when they have unfinished business. If your pet lived a full and happy life I am sure it would have already passed on...” She nodded her head with a nervous laugh, trying to reassure him.

WAIT HE KEPT THEM AS PETS! – She did not want to prejudge however to her that was strange, was he not scared of them rebelling and eating him in his sleep!

It was too late for her when she had asked what Demolitions Expert meant. His triggered pulled, Huojin's eyes practically lit up and a river of babble flowed from his mouth. "Oh, well you see, I come from a firecracker family, that is to say, we make firecrackers, not that we are firecrackers, we're Lunarians, just like you, only better at making things explode, because that's what we do, you see, family secret handed down through the generations, father to son, father to son, sometimes to daughter, but the ladies, they generally don't like explosions. For some reason. Anyway, I'm the best at making them that my family's ever seen, at least for as long as they can remember, we don't keep track or anything because, like my father says, it's not a contest, although really, I think it is. Anyway, because I'm more talented than my brother, I'm the heir to the family business, which I don't really care about so much as long as I can keep making fireworks, because it's amazing what you can make from them, making fire into something beautiful is great! I keep my animals because of that, I like to base fireworks designs on them, you know, and recently they've been useful as weapons, NOT TO HURT PEOPLE, I'm against hurting people, but just to distract them, you know? And if I can use them like that, maybe I'll survive the war, and then I can make more fireworks."

He paused to take a breath, then revealed, "You can see one if you want," reached into his pocket, and set off a small firecracker, which burned and cracked on the ground.

"That just the little kind I carry to keep away evil spirits," he informed her. "And I think my rat might have had unfinished business, he kind of died in," Huojin coughed awkwardly and muttered, "
an explosion. But it wasn't my fault!" he added hastily.

Sara’s eyes widened as he talked, she could not fully catch all of it... she had never heard someone talk so fast in her entire life! She smiled and nodded her head, what she could hear sounded impressive! If not a little bit dangerous... well it sounded EXTREMELY dangerous. “Oh, that sounds amazing. Your family must be very proud of you!” She nodded her head; it was good to see someone so passionate about his trade! It was very inspirational.

Then one went BOOM!

She meeped and jumped back, trying to hide behind the boxes. It was more because she was not expecting it than the actual explosion; she had never witnessed firecrackers before. When the noise stopped her heart started to slow, she dared to open her eyes to look at him and wondered back from the safety of her tower. “T-that... is something.” She gave a nervous laugh hoping he would not do that again, it was hard to see the beauty in something when your life was flashing before your eyes.

She then blinked her jaw dropping slightly; she did not like rats however no animal deserved to meet such a fate! “Oh my... I am so sorry to hear about that... “ She mumbled, not really knowing what to say to someone suffering a loss of a friend, again she felt like the best thing to do was reassure him. “I am sure it was not your fault! I am also sure you will make Haozi very happy...” She nodded with a kind smile painted across her face.

"I'm the prodigy child," Huojin announced matter of factly. "They're very proud of me! Are you a prodigy?"

He laughed when she jumped, reaching over to pat her on the shoulder. "Isn't it? I've never seen someone jump like that over such a small firework. I like it!" he decided cheerfully. "I can never make my family jump with explosions anymore, they just sit there at the table and read their newspapers, looking like this," he made a mock-serious face, 'Where's the appreciation in that?"

He seemed to sober up when she started on his rat. "Yes, well, it happens," he muttered disappointedly. "I don't like it when the rats die though, it's very thoughtless of them, don't you think? What about me? Don't they care?" Pulling a face, he scratched the back of his head. "I should probably get a priest to look at my workspace though. I don't want Haozi to be haunted by the ghosts of his forefathers." he pulled Haozi up to his face level and the rat gave a little squeak, scrambling about. "A fresh start is what we need, huh?" he asked the rat, and before it could acknowledge it, he turned to Sara. "Come home with me!" he decided on a completely unrelated note. "I can show you my other firecrackers."

It would seem stranger, but Huojin seemed like the eccentric sort that often took strangers home anyway.

"Erm, I would not say that. I am pretty average actually." She stated with a small nervous chuckle. Sara had never saw herself as anything other then ordinary, well besides the fact she could communicate with the dead. She was just your average teenager and she liked it that way. She would not be able to cope with people complementing her all the time, she could hardly handle when people did it now. Her head tilted slightly as he mentioned that he would like someone to check out his workshop.

Sara blinked as he put his hand on her shoulder, looking up at him with a small blush on her face. She did not know if it was from the contact or from the fact he was diagnosing how frightened she was of the firecrackers. "Y-yes. I have not seen anything like that before... I am sure they would be a lot prettier... from a safe distance... haha." She stated with a small nod and a nervous chuckle. She wondered if it would be a good idea to tell him, she did not like admitting it however he did save her from the rat. Maybe this could be her way of paying him back. "Erm... well. If you really want someone to check out your workshop. I am a soul conduit... I could. If you wanted... erm... yea." She mumbled, her words getting lighter and straining as she talked into nervous jamble.

Her eyes widened as he invited her back to his place. She did not know a thing about him, well besides that which he had explained. Was it really a good idea to follow him home? I mean he could be one of those Noble's in disguise waiting to attack her, she had never met one but Hua did not seem to like them very much... then again, she had to admit he seemed too... happy and carefree to be a threat. "Well... I guess that could not hurt." She smiled and then her eyes went to a fresh burn which was on his arm. She gulped and then in a very small voice she put forth a proposal. "I might be able to help you with that..." She squeaked pointing at the mark on the boys arm. The wound fresh enough to shine in the sunrays.

"Oh, well, so are plenty of people, I hear," Huojin said flippantly, shrugging, "So that's okay too." Huojin didn't think everyone could be like him, after all. He was like him all the time, and he found it pretty tiring some days.

"They're supposed to be seen from far away so you can enjoy the design properly," Huojin explained with a grin. "Unless they're just little ones like that. Usually people aren't afraid of those." How did this girl ring in the new year without fireworks?? If she had never used them before, Huojin could only imagine all the bad spirits that had to be crowding around her. He resolved to set off at least five more fireworks at his workshop to help scare them away, clearly Sara needed the assistance of a master.

He paused when she admitted her profession. "Oh, so that's why you haven't been killed by evil spirits yet!" he exclaimed. "Yeah, that makes sense now. You lied though, you said you were average." Frowning at her and looking at her from a funny angle, he continued, "I knew you weren't average, I can tell when I see another prodigy."

"Help with what," he asked as she pointed at his arm. Burns were so normal to Huojin that he didn't even know what she was talking about.
PostPosted: Fri Feb 25, 2011 11:12 am

"Oh well.... I did not really lie. I mean I am nothing special for a soul conduit I am still learning..." She gulped, she supposed she had lied a little. She hoped that he would forgive her. He seemed to brush it off pretty quickly, for that she was glad. She nodded her head as he started to once again ramble on about fireworks, he must really love them. His passion towards his profession was unquestionable. In some strange way it was motivating.

She smiled and tilted her head, at the mention of evil spirit. "Oh, well most spirits are my friends and teachers.... I mean, yea. I have yet to meet a 'evil' spirit... they are all quite nice. Well they are people like you and me... just. Physically challenged." She tried to explain, as well as she could. She was never very good at voicing opinions, she was always too quiet. She would much prefer to listen to what other people had to say. After all it was that common concept of spirits which caused her so much grief as a child. Other children would not come near her thinking she was haunted. They called her a witch..

He did not even notice it? She wondered slowly holding out her hand to grab his arm, her eyes looking up at his pale green ones. She pulled his arm over to her and rested her soft hand gently on the small burn. ".. d-do you trust me Huo?" She asked, closing her eyes slowly. She did not expect him to, after all they had only just met however she felt like she was in his debt and his friendly personality meant that she felt some comfort. He had saved her after all. The least she could do was return the favour in her own little way.

"You're special for a soul conduit, I can tell," Huojin scoffed. "I'm still learning too, but I know I'm a prodigy. And I know you're one too, it's written all over your face in big brushstrokes." Having settled the issue, he shrugged and listened to her talk about spirits.

A skeptical frown crossed his face. "Then what are fireworks for? We wouldn't make fireworks if there weren't evil spirits to scare away, and my family's been making them since, like the dawn of time. Maybe you've just been lucky meeting spirits, but I'm pretty sure that there are at least a thousand evil ones out there waiting to eat our brains or something. If we've had firecrackers for this long, it's gotta be true, right?" He tossed one of said fireworks up and down in his hand, idly. "If you like the ones you know, they can't be that bad, but I've got my eye on 'em, got it? As a firework maker it's my job to make sure they don't take advantage of a nice girl and possess her or whatever. Or possess me!" he added quickly, looking around them suspiciously and clenching the firework he had been tossing in his hand.

He looked at her when she asked if he trusted her and raised his eyebrows. "Sure. Do you trust me? Not everyone does because I have a tendency to explode." The firecracker in his hand went off and he dropped it like he had been scalded, shaking his hand after it was gone. "Literally."

"I will take your word for it, thank you." She smiled and nodded, she saw no reason to argue, he seemed determined to complement her and make her blush so she might as well just accept it before her face burnt off. She gave a nervous chuckle and shook her head, her hair falling forward to cover her red cheeks. He seemed to gloat a lot, however she thought it must be deserved or he would not be so confidant. She however knew she was nothing special - at least she never wanted to be. "Haha, I guess that can be the case, there is evil in our kind as in any - just remember that you have a spirit too living inside you. Maybe one of your children's children can show you what it is like being on the other side of one - I do not know much about them, I am sorry maybe I can ask one of my friends if they are scared of them. I will get back to you about it." She would be sure to ask one when one came to visit, she was still not able to talk to them herself, well they had to talk to her first. It was very confusing even for her. This was not making him think of her as strange was it, talking about how the dead were her friends. She hoped not! Maybe she should stop rambling on now... yes good idea Sara.

"You have already saved me once today - I could not ask you to protect me anymore. However thank you, its always nice to know someone is looking out for you - you have a good heart, I can feel it." She nodded, he was a good person, nothing evil could disguise it so well. She tilted her head as he asked if she trusted him. Then another one went off, she meeped and pulled him closer as it went off, I guess she just needed something to hide behind and since she already had his arm he was the easiest thing to use as a shield. She opened her eyes when the noises stopped and stepped back a little, great Sara, what were you doing? She did not know what to say, she was flustered truly and utterly. She took in a breathe and finally answered his question. Hoping he had not noticed the fact she just pretty much jumped into hm - why would he? Please do not be offended! "You have given me no reason not to, I will be a little wary of the explosives however - not around you. I trust you." She nodded and closed her eyes.

She concentrated her energy into her hand, it flowing from her own body into his. This was very simple, it was a burn which had healed, all she was going was repairing the skin however at her stage even that was a challenge - lucky for her... it seemed to work and soon the mark returned to normal, life coming back to the cells. So little and it had exhausted her - she really needed to train to get stronger. She opened her eyes, feeling a little light headed but at least now she had paid him back... sort of.

Huojin shook his head. "Not any of my kids! They're all going to be in the firecracker trade, and they're all going to be prodigies too. I don't need to look at my inner spirit to know that it'd never be floating around out here," he waved his hands in the air around them, "It's always going to be where it belongs." He thumped his chest for illustration.

Huojin laughed as she grabbed his arm. "I meant I'd protect you from spirits, not explosions!" he admonished. "Explosions aren't very frightening if you don't mind a few little burns. I don't really mind those. And I wasn't using my eyebrows anyway, I mean, what's the point of eyebrows if I can't even see them? Nah, explosions aren't as scary as spirits. Unless you don't know what you're doing, I guess. I'm pretty sure that if some schmuck played around in my workshop, he'd ruin everything." He grimaced at the thought of someone else in his workshop, but added, "Anyway, we don't put enough powder to really hurt you into a little firecracker like this."

He grinned widely when she said she trusted him. "Hey, that's a response I don't hear too often!" As she healed his arm, he took a look at it, flexing and waving it up and down. "Hey, that's pretty neat. Told you that you were a prodigy! I should show my folks, my Ba would be glad to know that I've finally made a friend who can help fix my mistakes." He lifted his shirt to show her all the burns underneath. "I make a lot of them," he admitted sheepishly, "But skin grows back, right? It's progress that's the thing. Next, next, next!"

"Next stop, my house!" He lowered his shirt and reached for her hand.
