Bedford was kicking his feet around, rather lost in thought. Which wasn't unusual nowadays. He had thought that he would spend his life in the herd being a protector, but now he found himself venturing out. It wasn't the life he was use to leading, but he...loved it and hated it.

He shook the thoughts out of his head, the lights in his antlers flickering and making slight clinking noise. The sun was on it's way to setting and he found himself looking not at the sunset, but at a mare who looked like a part of a painted sky.

He watched her for a moment from the distance, her hair brightened by the dimming sun and blending with the pink and yellow hues of the fading evening. Flowers were streaked across her body, like some canvas.

He approached her gently, cautiously, "Excuse me?"

Xing's mind had been absorbed in thought, wondering where her life would take her and if she would find a better life than the one she had left. She looked towards the setting sun and then down to the floor; her eyes were unable to focus.

That was, until she heard a voice. She had been walking before and then stopped to look around, not noticing that there was someone behind her. Xing looked back at him with a blank gaze, neither happy nor surprised that he was there.

"Hi there..." she greeted with a soft voice. She tried to smile, but it didn't look like she was actually happy.

Bedford's smile faltered for half a second. "What's the matter?" He tilted his head close to her, in a familiar way. "You're too pretty to look so upset." He could feel himself blushing at her.

Xing blinked a few times, somewhat shocked at the comment. She managed to let a slight smile slip. With her coat being dominantly white, it was clear to see that she was slightly flushed from the stallion's comment.

"Thank you for the comment, Sir," she told him in a small voice. "I'm not upset, really... My mind just keeps wandering to my past. Maybe that's why I feel... uneasy?"

She quickly looked up at the stallion to see what emotions were in his eyes; they were a beautiful brown color that caused her to be unable to look at them for too long. Again, she fixated her gaze to the ground. "What brings you here?"

Her voice was soft and soothing, filled with curiosity and... some other feeling that she couldn't really identify.

"Thinking about the future," he noticed the flush to her skin. He knew what it was like to have a sad past, he wasn't quite sure what to say to her. That it was okay, things happened...That was all cliche. It didn't really mean anything, nothing at all. It was words, empty futile words.

When she gazed at him, he lost focus for a moment. "Do you want to talk?" His voice was low and understanding. "It doesn't seem like it would help, but it does. It's the only way too--be okay. It was what helped me." He nudged her head up gently. "You can talk to me, if you want."

About the future... It sounded so nice when she said it in her head. It was odd that she was unable to let go of her past, even now. She knew it would be better off to talk to someone, but some random stranger she just met?

Xing debated about it for a little bit in her mind. I guess it couldn't hurt... Who knows if I'm even going to see this stallion ever again?

"My family... Parents and siblings... I left them. I love them, but couldn't find a place for myself within their hearts properly. It felt..." She didn't really know how to describe it. Well no... She did, she just didn't want to admit that her life was a rather lonely one.

"Like you were just a passing interest to them. Like a piece of puzzle trying to fit into the wrong hole?" He nodded his head. "I know what that's like. Feeling like you're not good enough for them to notice, wondering if when you were gone they'd even notice. Would anyone notice? Would they be relieved or were you already gone in their minds?" He smiled at her, a bit painfully.

"It's hard to move past that. I'm still moving past it, but some days it's easier and some days I'm a foal again watching them walk away. So on days like that, I think about the future, the things to come."

Xing was a little taken back by what the stallion said because it was definitely true. She smiled over at him. "I'm pretty sure I did well, to stand out at least a little... But I'd always be outshone by my siblings so there was never much praise or feeling of accomplishment..."

When she heard the confidence filled in the stallion's voice about the future, Xing got a little sad. In a tone softer than a whisper, she mumbled something. "It's easier to think of the future if it was more certain... For me, everything seems to be uncertain and would disappear in a matter of seconds..."

Bedford watched her sad eyes, and heard her voice barely. It was so heartbroken and low. "You...don't have to be uncertain. Things don't go as planned, but with a little companionship, a little help....things end beautifully. That's what I've been searching for."

He let the words hang in the air. It had been his goal, to try to lasso a line on an uncertain future. And now he could see, still a little uncertain and scary...but for the most part forming.

A small sigh escaped her. Xing wanted to feel comfortable in life, but... It seemed like nothing really wanted to reassure that confidence. She was unsure of what he meant by what he was searching for, but through time, she had stopped looking.

"Companionship... Sometimes it seems to only last for a little while, no matter how hard you want to hold on to it. At least, for myself anyways." She looked over at him, eyes half still hurting, half with wonder.

"How is your search? I speak of only my own situation, but never really asked for yours..."

"I was searching for adventure, for...someone who made me feel not so alone. Someone who would never abandon me..." He sighed as he looked at her again. A bit awkwardly, he nudged her gently. "Maybe we both need to stop looking? And maybe we'll find someone who cares to stay....You have to keep the faith."

When Bedford finished talking, there was a long moment of awkward silence until Xing comprehended what the stallion was hinting towards. Never had she met anyone so... straightforward and... comforting as this stallion was. The white-ness of her coat could not hide the blush that was growing on her cheeks. "D-do you mean..."

Xing's voice faded to a slight whisper when she said 'us'. She was definitely not used to this situation, since she's met others, but they were only a fleeting friendship. This stallion... This stallion actually wanted to stay by her side. Again with the small voice, she spoke again.

"D-do you really mean it...?" It was easy to tell that she would love company for the rest of her life, but despite that desire, she was afraid of what would really happen.

His voice was soft and low. "Who says it can't happen like this? Who says that the moment you meet someone, you can't just...know? Why does there have to be trials? Why can't it be about commitment from the beginning? A simple promise, no looking back. No need to test, and when it is finally tested. I'll still be there. Right beside you. Why couldn't this work? Why couldn't it last?" He could feel the hot flush rising across his cheeks, and he could see the scarlet on hers. He shuffled his feet a little shyly.

"I mean...I'm not...I'm not saying that to get intimate with you...and leave. We can...wait on that...till you're sure." He felt his face burn even hotter. "I'm not leaving. That's what I'm trying to say."

For herself, Xing was trying to keep a strong face and not falter with her beliefs. She could feel the emotions inside of her; she wanted to be able to depend on someone. "Life itself is a trial..."

That was the only thing she could say without falling apart. Her life... was horrible and she had gotten used to that. Xing knew that change was a good thing, but somethings... Should they be changed or left the same?

"I... I really do want... I don't know what I want," she finally admitted, the strength in her body finally giving out. Xing looked down at the ground, not knowing if she would break into tears or not.

Bedford nosed her gently. "I can wait as long as it takes for you to think about this. I won't give up hope." He closed his eyes and breathed in her scent. Enjoyed her being close to him, allowing this familiarity. He didn't want the moment to stop...Because past this moment everything could change, and right now...things were fine.

He sighed as he nosed at her again. "Just think. There's no rush. I won't go anywhere."
