And so the first tournament kicks off with somewhat pleasant weather to be had this gray morning! A small crowd of wolves has gathered a small distance away from your fight, some cheering on family, others booing or chanting for a particular wolf to lose concentration. Whether the combatants know each other or not, there is no doubt a certain air of tense energy in the arena today. The mid-morning chill might freeze toes, but for the combatants that will soon be a minor problem.
~~~
It was Kingdom Key who refereed the adult matches this go around, and she called out two names for their match. "Two Ls!" she chirped. "How nice, Lovely Little L's~ But only one's gonna stand for 'loser' today, so start hoping it's not you!"
KK was an odd one alright, making that sound so cheery and actually meaning it. Some say her stay underground made her a little more than . . . addled. Was she really an alpha?
((Combatants, make an entrance post with the wolves getting ready to fight and roll a 10 sided die at the same time!))
His name was called and his chest puffed out automatically. Sure it was but round one, but he was going to do his pack proud! The one he was 'fighting' wasn't even part of the pack. It would be an insult to lose, surely! Seeing his opponent was a female made him pause in his steps. It wouldn't feel right to beat a girl. His sister and dad were watching and he looked to them for some reassurance. Sure enough, his dad nodded at him and Jaya just watched. Poor girl look petrified.
"Well, well. Seems I've got to fight a pretty little flower today." His voice was light at teasing, green eyes flashing with pride and appreciation. Oh, yes, she was quite the looker. Maybe she wouldn't hate him for winning. he was starting to circle, much like most of the starting fights did.
Lungaia silently surveyed the other wolf, her expression unimpressed. From the looks of her, the female had weathered many a battle in her life; from her toned body to her cold eyes and tattered ears, every inch of her told the story of a wolf sculpted by hardship and violence.
But it was the look in her eyes that should have put Lalita on edge.
The tournament situation seemed a bit garish, admittedly. Not really her thing. But, well...a wolf needed an outlet for certain urges, sometimes, and if she could do it for glory...in a sanctioned event...well, all the better.
Her brow raised at the other wolf's commentary, her maw curling in a sneer. "Indeed," she said, simply, and stretched her muscles one final time before preparing for the attack.
Just let him think she was a little damsel...and she would try to remember to stop before she killed him.
"Ohooo no, pretty flowers are up in the north, laddie," KK said with amusement. "I'd be careful if I were you. Chivalry doesn't get ya the title here!" That femme looked pretty fatal . . . The alphess wondered what would bring someone like her to their usually peaceful lands.
Well whatever, wasn't like she could cause too much trouble in a simple tournament. FIGHT TIME. She pranced to her spot for refereeing, turned to the pair, and barked, "Begin!"
((Lungaia's got first go!))
Lungaia slowly circled around the other wolf, tattered ears pressed to her skull, eyes narrowed coldly -- but a faint smirk twitched at the corner of her maw. Bloodshed was always welcome...but fear had its place, too, and pure simple violence.
Then, quickly, striking like a cobra, she dove forward to rake her paw along the male's flank, clawing at him -- not too hard, but just enough to test him, to gauge how weak he was, and how much she might need to hold back for a fair fight.
The scratching caught him by surprise. Lalita wasn't really paying attention to her; because he was busy thinking about where she got her tattered ears from. Letting out a childish yelp, Lalita backed away and snorted, flanks stinging a bit where claw got under his thick fur. Whatever, he would so win this battle. Quite easily, too.
He darted to the left, then the right and ultimately attacked her flanks, because it seemed like the thing to do. Fighting was not his strong suit.
She winced, slightly, at his onslaught to her flank. Puppy hit harder than she'd given him credit for! Well, then, time to turn up the heat a bit. She swung her haunches around, relieving some of the attack to her rear, the sharp pain of his first attack abating up into her hip joint.
She spun around full-circle and landed him a blow to his side, aiming to knock him back.
And the blows landed, knocking him back indeed. Snorting and wincing as the pain got worse, he shook himself and fluffed up before running around her in a circle, nipping at her ankles, going to take her down. He wouldn't draw blood. No, he refused to do that. Not to a girl. He could possibly woo her after this and all! But he wanted to knock her down, get her on her stomach and go for a charge when she got back up.
"Not going easy on you!"
"The first wise words to escape your lips," she said, withdrawing from her first attack and slowly circling. Her eyes gleamed with amusement. He was so earnest! It was endearing, in a way.
The speed of his attack impressed her, and she stumbled forward as he nipped at her hind limbs. She fell, her forequarters pressing into the sand, tail whipping for balance, but she did not collapse entirely. She thrust one hindpaw beneath herself, to shove herself back to her paws, and kicked out with the other paw, connecting with his jaw to allow her time to rise back to her paws.
"You attack bravely," she said, once her footing had recovered. "A brave fool."
As her foot connected with his jaw, he heard it tick and scrambled back. Working his jaw a minute, he broke out at a complete run and charged at her, aiming his head for her ribs. He was a big wolf, yes, and probably weighed a lot, and he didn't want to kill this wonderful girl, so he didn't put all his weight into it. In fact, he probably did more damage to himself than to her. Either way, it probably took her by surprise, which is really what he wanted to do.
"Even brave fools win battles."
Well that...was an interesting maneuver. She felt wind being pushed from her lungs on impact, and she stumbled slightly under his weight. She wondered why it was that he should hold back the way he did -- why he would absorb so much of his impact himself.
Did the fool not see that she was quite capable of taking anything he gave her, and far more besides?
"So long as you know your station, whelp," she said, shaking herself free of the impact and lunging at him once again, snapping at the flesh along his shoulder. Perhaps it would be in his interest to end this match faster...
Welp? He was hardly a puppy anymore! It made his fur bristle just before teeth sank into the flesh on his shoulder. He cried out at that and bucked her off, spinning on foot to sink his teeth into any part of her he could reach. It was an instinctual reaction; going for the teeth to, probably, tatter then even more. He was mad, in pain and all of this was starting to make his blood boil.
Maybe he wouldn't win against this girl. He probably wouldn't. "Shut your mouth! I am not a welp!" Of course, he said this after he'd backed off.
His teeth sunk into her, drawing first blood, and she grinned. "Ahh! That's what I wanted!" She said, laughing as she backed away. So that's what it took to get a real fight from him, was it?
Now that she'd discovered this weakness, she pressed it. Truth be told she didn't care who won this match -- she hardly needed the tournament of a pack she wasn't involved in to tell her that she was a warrior when she already knew it to be true -- but she did so relish this. Wolves at their most primal...beneath all their veneer, they were simple beasts, and she loved exploiting those basal desires.
"So, pup," she said, dancing slightly from paw to paw, her eyes glinting. "Do you have it in you to hit me again...or will you need to run back to your mother, now you've used the last of your courage."
The taunt reached his ears and his fur stood on end, a deep growl escaping his throat. Who the hell did she think she was, calling him a pup? Did she not see how big he was? He was no pup. But, he didn't attack her, oh not. Not this time. Lalita wanted to see what the girl would do. Oh, but he was pissed now. His next attack... she'd be completely finished his next attack, he just knew it.
"All your words sound so hallow. What with your attitude?" He snorted at her instead and slowly circled, just bidding his time. His dad taught him to keep a level head when he was mad.
He didn't respond to her taunt with the enthusiasm she desired. Pity. The fight was beginning to bore her, and boredom would hardly do; no, if she got bored enough, and frustrated enough, she would be more likely to lose her self-control...and that wouldn't be pretty.
While he was talking, she tightened the muscles in her haunch and leapt forward, launching herself at him full-force.
The impact was dizzying for her, and she recoiled from him, falling back to a crouch and swaying a bit on her paws.
