History:
Hooves clawed along the hard wood flooring, squeals, giggles and laughter filled the air. The joy of children playing tag, dolls, or make believe were something that could melt even the coldest of hearts. At the orphanage it seemed that most of the abandoned children got along, and were doing well from their unpleasant history, and the stories they all bore for why they were here today. It seemed like they didn't even care... or possibly couldn't remember. That's how Ettore say it, at least. He himself couldn't forget. Wouldn't forget. It was etched into his mind like a tribal tattoo signifying rank. In the case of the autumn painted batling, it held his ranking as desolate. Being completely forlorn from the world. Of course, he had a twin sibling with him, but they were one of the same, and fed off of one another's loneliness. Curled up against the side of the log, wings wrapped tightly along his petite frame, Ettore kept his eyes downcast, ears laying at half mast as the sounds of bliss filled them... echoing in his mind. But it contrasted with the images and muffled sounds that flashed across the backs of his eyes, of his mother's weeping, and grandfather's careless and rather... emotionless behavior as the twin's were relinquished to the cony. That was all he could remember. That's all he would allow himself to remember. The abandonment from his own family. How cold they were. Did they not love him enough? Was he not good enough to them? A growth began to fester within the cub like a disease, a plague. It poisoned his mind, and paralyzed all thoughts that were to move towards progress, and slowed any movement his subconscious might want to engage in. The best word to describe his condition would be zombified. Of course he ate, and he moved around, but with a rather dull and mindless fashion. He never gave eye-contact to any of the other children, and ignored them as if they had never spoke, or perhaps he would feign deafness. He wouldn't even speak to his caregiver, simply responding with subtle movements if need be.
On this day, like every other day, Ettore found himself deep in his dark dismay, the eerie cloud that loomed around him, and enclosed his very being was just as heavy. But something that day piqued him into acting. It wasn't anything one could put a claw on, but it certainly got him motivated enough to act out of the ordinary. Standing onto his hind quarters, wings unfolding to lower and help him walk along with the clawed thumbs, he headed towards the exit of the hollowed log. The rabbit was busy with the squirrel triplets, who were running circles around her, and playing minute tricks here and there. She seemed far too engrossed with them to notice anything else. With that, the young bat hopped off from the log and descended to the ground. It was time to go.
A few of the other children peeked over, having seen the act, and gasped softly. Little heads peering over, a few voices calling out to him quietly, Ettore ignored them all. He was tired of this place. There was no reason to stay, nothing here for him. The remaining orphan's faces contorted into worried expressions, many looking back to the distracted mother-figure who was hopping about trying to pluck the squirrels from off of one another, and off her crooked legs. It would be best for his twin to stay behind. They were weaker than he, and would have a better change at getting by with the assistance of Zephra. She would make sure a good home would be found.
The trek was arduous and long... difficult as well. It seemed like days the little bat had traveled, and it had indeed been.. perhaps at least five at the least. A deep instinct was able to keep him alive, finding bugs and berries to feast on during the nights, and continue on his path. He didn't know where he was going, but he followed where the resources took him. He'd traveled over thick roots for the most of the time, that were skewed and coiled like the skeletons of serpents. All along the way, his memories became less apparent, and not as potent in his mind. They lingered still, and kept his demeanor sullen, but they didn't hinder him from continuing on. By the time he'd passed through the forest of thick roots, Ettore found himself amongst a rather open plain... exposed... There wasn't much place to sleep during the days, which caused him to become a bit uneasy for the first time on his migration. Ears kept perked in an alert fashion, body pressing to the ground as raptors were hears circling above. Thankfully he was tiny enough to conceal himself within the tall grasses surrounding him... even if his orange pelt was a bit of a red flag in ripening greens. But a brow body was enough to mimic the rich earth that held in patches in random area's, thus he curled his wings against his stomach tightly, crawling along carefully, ears pinned up towards the heavens.
On a cool night, he arrived at Fleuve. The settlement seemed rather calm, and easy-going from first glance. As he entered the town, he noted that not many inhabitants were around. Probably because it was the dead of night, and only nocturnal creatures such as himself roamed at such times. A few shrews, and moles were about, as well as his own kind. Another note he took was how well to do they all seemed; decorated in adornments that were lacy, frilly, ruffly, and gem embedded. Silvers, golds, jewels of all seasons... where had he found himself to be...? Keeping hidden along the few boats that rimmed the stream side, Ettore found that the nature of this place was very comforting, and easing to his restless and hardened mind. It allowed his tensed muscles to give way to relaxation and ease from their pensive state. As he hid, he saw that logs lined nearby... homes, of course, and... Peeking up from his crouched position, ears flaring straight up, he whirled around as he felt a presence behind him. Gasping, on guard, he raised his claws into an attack position, ready to face his opponent head on! But it was only the owner of the boat he'd take refuge by, an adult ferret male, who wasn't phased in the slightest by Ettore's front. Chuckling lightly, the ferret patted the child's head and moved on to untie his boat for early fishing, "At ease, soldier..." the tall fello mused, pushing his boat further into the river before hopping in. He gave a salute to the dumbstruck bat, and went on his way. Perhaps... this place wasn't so bad... Amber eyes rose from their somewhat entranced and petrified state to survey his surroundings. Dawn would be here soon... and he needed rest. Eyes drooping slightly, Ettore began to crawl towards the log's that he'd seen tucked away down the stream. All of them looked well groomed and taken care of, even those that were unclaimed. Organized, everything seemed to be. Safe, and comforting it was to the cub who's mind was whirring with noise and confusion. After a few glances into different unattended logs, he finally found one that suited him. It was small, and dark; the other end being covered with a circular wood cork. Climbing in, looking around it, a soft sigh seethed through his wary lips. He would start anew here, make a life for himself. He didn't need anyone. No one's pity, or sympathy. He'd get along just fine on his own. With his mind made up, and a plan conceived in his mind, Ettore wrapped his membrane clad limbs around his lithe figure once he was hooked at the ceiling of his new home, and let those bright sunsets set with heavy lids.
