The earlier outing with Claire had dragged up all sorts of memories he'd never had the intention to dwell upon, and of course Lucas found himself dwelling upon them. He'd seated himself in a quiet hallway across from a series of windows, the same location he had chosen to practice his guitar some time in the past. This evening, though, the man had with him no guitar, no sheet music, and no pokemon listening at his side. He had only himself, his elbows on his knees and his back to the wall with one hand loosely holding onto his glasses and the other draped across his face. The distinct grimace he wore on his lips was proof that he didn't expect to be found.

A rare occurrence was happening - something that only happened once in a blue moon.

Claire was wandering around the base with no final destination in mind.

Luke's request earlier that day had her thinking of all sorts of things, of situations and problems and solutions to whatever could be wrong, but none of that was helping. What she needed to do was figure out how to get Lucas to just tell her what was wrong, to get him to just.. talk to her. Sitting around in her room hadn't made for any sort of progress whatsoever, so she had changed into comfortable pants and sneakers instead of her boots that liked to click across the floor with each step, and a dark gray hoodie hung unzipped over a paler shirt beneath it. Clearly she didn't worry about being too freezing cold around the base since she didn't have her fuzzy, fluffy coat any longer.

Her wanderings found her in familiar territory that caused her to frown thoughtfully, recognizing this as around where she'd first met Lucas. As if going to the spot would give her some sort of inspiration for what to do, she walked towards the secluded area and halted immediately upon turning the corner.

Luke wasn't kidding. Claire suddenly felt sad just looking at the poor man who obviously was trying to hide from the busier halls, somewhere private. Too bad the only private areas were private bathrooms. "I guess you like this hallway, huh?" She said quietly, leaning against the wall lightly just by the corner. Arceus, just looking at him, at the face he'd been making, it made her feel terrible. What could possibly make the normally happy, goofy Lucas look like this?

"Wha--" He started, straightening his posture and raising his glasses to his face. "Oh, uh... I guess I do, huh?" He grinned, or attempted to, at least. He succeeded in making his mouth smile, but no amount of effort could force his eyes to do the same. "I wound up here by chance, but... Guess it just seemed like a nice place to relax." A slight gesture of his hand indicated the window, through which one could observe the dim gold disc of the sun sinking below the horizon. "Call me an idiot, but I kinda like watching the sun set."

No amount of effort on his part could make her forget the look that had been on his face just moments before, but she offered him a small smile all the same, though her expression wasn't a very happy one. She walked over quietly and leaned her back against the wall, sliding down slowly until she was sitting next to him.

Her gaze lingered out the window, watching the setting sun in silence for some moments, a curious yet sad expression present on her face. "It is a nice place to relax," she murmured as the corners of her mouth twitched in a hint of a smile. "I love watching the sun set." She refrained from asking about what was bothering him for the moment, not wanting him to feel like she was pouncing on him for immediate answers to whatever questions she had.

As she moved to seat herself, Lucas moved to rise, immediately turning from Claire and making motions towards leaving. "Ah, I should probably be going. I'll see you around." Company was not particularly high on his list of wants at the moment.
PostPosted: Mon Jan 24, 2011 6:26 pm

Too bad for Lucas, company was her top priority at the moment. Or it was as soon as she found him in the deserted hallway, because before the thing at the top of her list was 'figure out what to say to Lucas'. Actually, that was still at the top of her list. Crap.

Double crap.

As he moved to leave she reached up at the same moment, curling her slender fingers around his wrist gently. "Please don't go Lucas," she said, violet eyes peering up at him as a hesitant tone crept into her voice. "I.. was hoping to talk to you about something.." Something, anything to get him to stay so she could figure out how to get him to talk to her about things. "About last night.. please?"

The hand seizing his wrist was completely unexpected, and Lucas turned back to her with an expression that could only be called complete and utter surprise. "Ah..." He reached up with his free hand to rub at the back of his neck, his typical nervous habit. "Well, okay..." He couldn't very well brush her off after giving her that whole speech about chivalry earlier the same day. Somewhat reluctantly, he returned to his seat. "What's on your mind?"

Oh, oh good, he was staying! ...crap this meant she had to figure out something to talk about right now oh Arceus what--

"Well," she began hesitantly, releasing the grip on his wrist so her hand could go back to being in her lap to continue fiddling with her fingers - fidgeting was her own nervous habit. Her gaze shifted to him uncertainly, though it could easily be passed off as hesitant. "I just.. do you remember everything from last night? You sounded confused earlier, and I wasn't sure.." Because that was Luke crap.

"I couldn't walk, so.. so you carried me to my room," and then didn't do anything he shouldn't have. The thought made her gaze shift back to the floor, still hesitant but for an entirely different reason this time. "And.. you even stayed to make sure I didn't hurt myself," and still didn't do anything inappropriate. She faltered slightly at the unexpected rush of emotions at the thought, and her expression changed accordingly to the unpleasant, sad memories. How the hell did this happen? This wasn't what she planned on talking about at all. "I.."

"Ah, no, actually..." In fact he remembered so little that he really had convinced himself he had been dreaming. He had resigned the explanation as a standard lapse in memory, but the timing was so random that it didn't seem to fit...

He listened as she spoke, increasingly concerned the more she said. Her change in expression startled him, and he instinctive moved his arm around her shoulders and drew her closer. Under any other circumstances he wouldn't have dared to lay an unwarranted hand on a coworker, but 'coworker' had currently taken second place against 'girl,' and damned if he was about to let a girl cry on his watch.

"Don't force yourself." There wasn't a single word in the world that he needed to hear at the expense of a girl's tears.

What. When did this happen?! This wasn't supposed to happen at all! What..?! This hadn't happened when Luke told her about it this morning.. maybe it was because she had to talk about it? Crap...

The arm around her was completely unexpected and made her jump slightly, startled, but instinctively leaned into him. A small sniffle betrayed her but she immediately shook her head, straightening up. "No, I'm okay." She'd be damned if she were going to cry out in the middle of the freaking hallway. No way. Ever. "I just.. I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate it, and.." And how much it meant to her.

Crap, this wasn't how it was supposed to turn out at all.

For some reason she couldn't bring herself to add the last part, so she shook her head slightly instead and murmured, "Thank you. It means a lot.." Arceus, she needed a topic change like now. What had caused her to think nearly crying in the middle of the hallway was ever a good idea?

Lucas shook his head, a smile drawing up the corners of his mouth. "Don't worry about it. Any other guy would have done the same." Well, she did seem rather confused about the whole guy code of honor he had explained earlier, so he could sort of imagine why it would seem so strange...
PostPosted: Mon Jan 24, 2011 7:27 pm

His off-handed comment about it caused a snort of laughter to escape her - except it wasn't laughter, because it was anything but funny. "Any other guy would, really?" She said before she could even process the thought that maybe she shouldn't have said that. Crap crap crap crap crap.

And she couldn't pretend not to have said that either, so she simply slumped against the wall and pulled her knees to her chest in one motion, staring at one particular tile and not at Lucas, hoping the topic would just change instantly. Right now. This was definitely not what she was planning on talking about. Crap.

"Wha--?" Between her body language and every other hint he just realized she had dropped, a picture began to form. And though it was dim and blurry, Lucas could already tell he didn't like it one bit. But wait, no, there was always the chance that he had jumped to some conclusion. "What do you-- I mean..." He stared intently forward, brow furrowed. Damn it, what was the tactful way to ask this sort of thing...
PostPosted: Mon Jan 24, 2011 7:46 pm

No, this was definitely not part of the plan she didn't even have. This was a prime example of why you should never be unprepared for anything.

She continued to hug her knees to her chest, lowering her chin to rest on one knee. "I told you I don't drink." And it was true, she had.

She didn't bother to elaborate on this statement either, a sudden familiar feeling welled up inside her as her chest felt tighter. Dammit. But fine, if he still didn't get it... "And I also said I got drunk once before." Insert meaningful pause. "Once." And thereafter she refuses to drink.

He had a distinct sinking feeling, and he pressed his palm against his forehead as if to better absorb the information. What could he even say to that...?

The cold feeling that had washed over him turned frigid as his blood veritably turned to ice in his veins. "Wait-- This was..." He lowered his voice. "Not in Galactic." He phrased it as a statement rather than a question. That was impossible. Completely impossible. He'd been an elite in Galactic while Claire was there.
