Sometimes, there's no right way to find a book. It happens that way especially when one isn't sure what one is looking for. T Of all things, that's probably the worst; she reflected on the problem glumly. There was a pile of books on a table in front of her, and yet somehow none of them were right.

Some of them were good old comfort books, ones she's read before and many times. Some were by favorite authors, or at least good ones. Some were random choices. None of them was particularly what she wanted, though all of them had a little something.

Pixie picked up an old favorite, dog-eared and worn, and fanned the pages. She could pick it up anywhere and know the thread of the story without missing a beat.

There was no point in reading it again. She put it back on the pile and leaned back, stretching her legs out and crossing them at the ankle.

"This is not cool."

"Hnnngghh... Can't fall asleep."

The quiet slaps of bare feet against hard floor echoed through the halls of Fort Ratatosk as John stifled a yawn, making his way towards the library. Maybe he'd be able to find a good, light novel to read. He would make sure to stay away from any of Ally's spell books, remembering what happened last time, with a slight cringe.

Peeking through the doorway, he could see that a light was on. Who could be up at this hour? His gut instinct told him it was Ally; she had a penchant for late-night book reads. Stepping into the library, he instead found Pixie with a small pile of books in front of her.

"Pixie?" he asked, taking a seat across the table form her and rubbing at his eye. "What are you doing here at this hour?"

She gestured to the pile of books in front of her. Each pile was exactly even, and there were something like fifteen books total. "Trying to find a book to read. You?"

As if she couldn't guess-- she smiled slightly, but it was more in her eyes than anything else as she tapped a title. She wasn't quite nocturnal, but she and morning had this discreet, unspoken agreement never to meet.

"I'm usually awake around now anyway, but for some reason..." Her reading tastes were oddly restless. Not even the usual zombie-apocalypse science-fiction was holding her attention.

Not even the bodice rippers were remotely amusing.

"Couldn't sleep." he replied, poking through some of the books. He looked at their spines, noting their titles, yet none of them really stuck out to him. His eyes rested on Pixie and that soft smile she had. She seemed at ease and comfortable, which was odd, given the time. He idly wondered if he was the only one in the clan who had a relatively normal sleep schedule. Everyone else seemed to love burning the candle from both ends...

"Oh, haven't read this in a while." he said with a smile, pulling one book out of the pile. It was a zombie-apocalypse book, but told without the trashiness that other books in the genre had; the narrative was a series of interviews, all told with chilling realism.

"What kind of books do you usually like to read?" the leader asked, starting up with one of the first chapters in the novel.

She'd liked that book, but it didn't hit what she wanted at the moment. "A bit of everything." She tipped the titles toward him. "Fairy godmothers, enchanted horses, retellings of fairy tales... future noir, alternate universe, historical fiction." Her books were as eclectic as everything else she liked.

"I keep trying to struggle through this one.." She tapped the hard cover of an alarmingly thick book; the title suggested horror, but the picture on the front was of a small town under some kind of curved forcefield.

"But I keep getting stuck. Too much work to chug through it."

John's left eye twitched when he came across that book.

"Geez, I thought you said it was a novel, not a dictionary." he blurted out, his head tilting at an angle, trying to grasp just how thick that book really was. No wonder she was having a hard time reading it.

"So, I will probably regret asking this," he began, looking back at her. "But, what are you having trouble with? What's the work of this?"

"I really like this author's work, usually." She tapped a finger on the cover thoughtfully. "There's only one of his works that I can say I actively dislike, in fact..."

But she just could not get through this one. And she'd been trying; there was a bookmark about a hundred and fifty pages into the monstrosity. "The chapters are too short and episodic. Not even--" Pixie gestured, like marking off space, very short. "--whole episodes, but like they've been interrupted by commercials, except the commercials are different episodes.

"By the time it gets back to the character or situation I was interested in, I've forgotten what was going on." Which was no way to read a book, at least in her opinion. "It's a shame, too -- he just did a great short story collection."

If by great one meant terrifying.

"Sounds kinda convoluted." he stated honestly, patting the cover of the thick book. Stifling another yawn, he stretched a bit and laid his head on the table.

"So... are you up like this a lot?" John asked, blowing bangs away from his forehead with a puff of breath.
