I must say I am not sure how I feel about it. For modern astrologers to take something that was created 3000 years ago and change it, though based on modern science, is still a little... dumb.
I was kind of interested (and sort of hoping that maybe they'd stick me in Ophiuchus if possible) but instead I got bumped back into Taurus.
I can almost certainly say I am everything that a Taurus is not. Sure, the position of the stars has changed, but that doesn't mean that personalities will change along with it.
My mother loves astrology, not for the horoscopes, but for the bizarre way that people born in these areas sometimes have a particular personality trait that suits them. You can go even further by using an astrological wheel that determines other aspects about you. For instance, I have a lot of Leo and Capricorn in me as well. It's kind of cool stuff.

I suppose changing something as ancient as that is just... i find it to be almost a disgrace to the Babylonians, who put so much care into it. Sure, it's got less to do with the position of the sun these days, but when you are born in a particular time of year, I can certainly say that it affects your personality.
So planet wobblies be damned I say! You can't mix astrology with science! Next thing they'll do is remove Pluto as a ruling planet for Scorpio because it isn't a planet. :B

anywho, ramblings aside. Discuss your new star sign and whether you like it or not.

'New' signs are here for those of you who don't know.

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

TL;DR
Basically astrology is being lame, pushed ALL the dates around for the astrological signs because of the earth's wobbly movement, and decided to cram Ophiuchus in beside Scorpio and was all like 'ya thirteenth sign, screw you, Babylonians!' and threw the entire system out of sequence.

the end.

There is so much more to it than the media is reporting. Based on what I've learned while studying astronomy, the only part I'm taking seriously is the mention of a "shift" since that is more than likely the natural polar shift that happens and it does actually affect how the stars are viewed from different places on Earth.

Though, since we're allowed to change unnecessarily change signs I'd like to be a Camelopardalis, please. smile

Indeed, it is a completely natural change that happens. The earth will wobble back and forth, and to top it off, each sign is balanced in a cycle of water earth fire and air. Shoving Ophiuchus in there at random is the reason that they didn't put him in there. It screwed up the balance. Now Scorpio is six days long. Like... what is the point then? Why not just REPLACE scorpio with Ophiuchus?
I hope that the hype goes away.

@Grimm: I hope the hype goes away, too. I'm sick of seeing it on facebook and hearing about it at work. Definitely making me consider dropping astronomy from my degree as one of my minors. (Will have to drop anyway as my next school doesn't offer it as a minor, but this situation is making the decision easier.)

Though, this one news broadcast made me laugh because they talked to a tattoo artist and he said, "Hell yeah. I'm gonna make f**king bank because everyone wants that s**t covered up!"

Astrology is a bunch of s**t anyways. Claiming that the position of the sun in the sky at the time of your birth somehow affects your personality traits is absolutely ridiculous. Why waste time feeling anything about it?

My Friend Grimm

I suppose changing something as ancient as that is just... i find it to be almost a disgrace to the Babylonians, who put so much care into it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylonia#Medicine

If a patient could not be cured physically, the Babylonian physicians often relied on exorcism to cleanse the patient from any curses.

Modern medicine is a disgrace to the Babylonians!

Seriously though, no matter how ancient something is, bullshit is bullshit, so who cares if it gets changed? Christianity has changed their stories around time and time again throughout the years, and nobody seems to care about that. (In the interest of fairness, Christianity is not the only religion guilty of doing this, and they are certainly not the most blatant about it.)

I wouldn't go so far as to call it "a bunch of s**t", but I myself don't use astrology in my spiritual practices or daily life so I don't have an attachment to it. I'm sure someone who does would feel differently.

Anyway, lol at the comment about exorcism and the Babylonians. I had to give a mini-report on the history of exorcisms in PSYC220 today and wasn't expecting to see anything else on the subject today. XD

:/ Leviticus, that is going a bit too far, thanks. You don't need to be rude about it.

@jude: I don't use it daily either, but I have held a great interest in it since I was little and find the concepts fascinating. It's neat to research and the history is extremely neat. I don't follow horoscopes, but the study of it is really cool. I go to a tech school so I can't take anything like that :B

What exactly was rude about my post? I stated facts and shared valid opinions. As for the quotes, lighten up a bit, I was just kidding. Nevertheless, I apologize.

While I agree it's all bullshit, I like to follow the Chinese zodiac more than the western one. The Chinese zodiac is based off astrology but it pays attention more so to the solar cycle. You have an animal for your year, your day and even the time you were born. In the Chinese zodiac I am the fire rabbit, my month animal is an Earth Ox, and my hour is either a rabbit or dragon.

Interesting stuff. It's kind of like its western native american spirit animal, except it's a general thing while the native american spirit animal is very personal, and changes.

According to the date switch though, I am no longer an aquarius (which really suited my personality haha) and took my mother's sign. Apparently I'm hardworking, disciplined, etc.... :/ Nope. Too lazy.

Okay, time to roll up my sleeves and correct this misconception here.

There are two zodiacs that use the constellations we all know and love. There's the tropical zodiac and the sidereal zodiac.

The tropical zodiac is based around the Spring Equinox. Essentially you start at the Spring Equinox and add around 30 flat days for each sign. That's why Aries is always listed first, it's the first of the tropical zodiac year.

The sidereal zodiac is based off of what constellations the sun's path takes it through. As you may be aware, the sun changes the its position in the sky throughout the year, which is why days are shorter during the winter, the arc it takes through the sky is shorter. So the sidereal zodiac looks at where the sun is, and which constellation's zone it's in, as to what sign is in vogue.

As you can imagine the tropical zodiac doesn't change much while the sidereal zodiac does drift some about every 70 years.

We in the west mainly (almost exclusively) use the tropical zodiac, which means the dates have not changed. The sidereal zodiac has been changing for years upon years. However every now and then someone picks up that there's a similar system out there and starts the rumour that all your signs have changed. Really what's happened is that you are looking at a different system that just happened to use all of the signs from the system we actually use.

There's also the misconception that this modern revisiting means the Babylonians were wrong. Not so much. Obviously we can be more accurate, but the positions of the constellations do shift (like I said, it's about 1 day every 70 years) so after 2100 years you get a full month drift.

TLDR: The excitement/horror is for nothing. The system modern western astrology uses has actually not changed.

((SIDE NOTE: I do use astrology in my life as part of my spiritual path. I don't expect everyone to believe it and I don't believe it's the end-all be all. That being said, I have no problem with Levi's comments on a personal level...I do think that in the future your opinions should be voiced with a little less vitriol to avoid anyone taking offense though Levi. I'm not saying anyone will, but we like to play it safe.))

HECK YES TO THIS.

I was waiting for you to come in this thread because I knew that you would say things better than I could. <3 I've been having to say what you said in your post to most of my coworkers because they're all in a tizzy and getting worked up about it. :/
