I know alot of people that started to act like they knew every little thing about geishas & they acted like they were the coolest only after they saw the movie memoirs of a geisha, and well stuff like that really gets on my nerves......I just wanted to know if the people here in this guild are just here because they saw the movie.

I saw the movie and read the book. I've done research about geisha beyond the extent of the movie though. I've always been into Japan and its culture.

i was actually in the original thread, the geisha school rp that was the foundation of this guild

personally, im not fond of the movie or the spawn of followers that at times refuse to even look into the reality of geisha culture and merely worship the book, which was beautifully written i must say

I've always been fascinated by Japanese culture, and while the book did spark my intrest in researching more about geisha, I've always been rather fond of them (I was a Maiko for halloween in the eighth grade)

I have been into Japanese culture from a very young age. I'll admit my start came from anime. I even visited Tokyo in the summer of '02 and later in the spring of '05. My ethnicity is chinese and I've always been torn between my studies of both cultures.
As for the book, it showed me how little I knew about the world of geishas.

My sister introduced me to the book.... I read it, fell in love with the book and for awhile that's all I could talk about.... so when the movie came out I just had to see it.....I saw it both on the 23rd and the 24th and then one more time a couple of weeks or so afterwards! I don't want to look like them or anything, it's just a really good story!!!

I read the book "Memoirs of a Geisha" a full year before the movie came out. I was in this guild three months before the movie came out. After I read Memoirs I was totaly captivated! I had already been interested in the japanese life before, because of anime and stuff. reading that and "Geisha, A Life" only got me in deeper. I love the mystery and beauty of the Japanese culture! =^w^=

It was to my understanding that Memoires of a Geisha is completely Fictional and was written solely through personal research and interviews. It was not based off of a real Geisha. Infact he even mentions that in the book.

It was to my understanding that Memoires of a Geisha is completely Fictional and was written solely through personal research and interviews. It was not based off of a real Geisha. Infact he even mentions that in the book.

"After Memoirs of a Geisha was published, Arthur Golden was sued for breach of contract and defamation of character by Mineko Iwasaki, a retired geisha he had interviewed for background information while writing the novel. According to the plaintiff, Golden had agreed to protect her anonymity if she told him about her life as a geisha. She had requested this because of the traditional code of silence about their clients. Yet when the novel was released Golden thanked "Mineko Iwasaki, one of Gions top geisha in the 1960s and 1970s" in the acknowledgements.
Aside from failing to protect her identity and privacy of her clients, Iwasaki complained that Golden had inaccurately portrayed geisha as high class prostitutes. In the novel, Sayuri's virginity is auctioned off to the highest bidder. This plot point particularly offended Iwasaki, who stated that not only had this never happened to her, but that no such custom existed at all in Gion. Moreover, the character Sayuri in the novel seems obviously modelled on Iwasaki, with many of the book's main characters and events having parallels in Iwasaki's life. These people and experiences are often portrayed negatively in Memoirs, even when their real-life counterparts were positive for Iwasaki. Iwasaki received several death threats and was accused of dishonoring her profession for her involvement with Memoirs of a Geisha."

I know memoirs of a geisha is fictional.
My fiance and I walways thought there was something wrong about a non-japanese MAN writing a book about a japanese woman geisha =P

The movie and book were what sparked my initial interest, but I am far more interested in learning about the reality of geisha life as opposed to that fantasy world of the book and movie

I read the book when I was in middle school, so.. *pulls out fingers* 8 Years ago. Thats what spawned my interest in Japanese culture. What with just the specifics of each season. Each season has different colors and animals and flowers that represent them, not to mention fabrics and stones. heart

After that it spawned a massive book collection, including the book writen by the only Western woman to become a Geisha.

The movie was beautiful, but you had to sort of forget it was riddled with errors, but other then that very entertaining!

Most of the times with books going to movie, it is riddled with error, but you have to the director more then just a little artistic license.

If you ever need a distenction between geisha, there are differences, read "Geisha a Life" Mineko Iwasaki, and "Autobiography of a Geisha" Sayo Masuda. Mineko is the True Geisha of Gion, and Sayo is what is considered a hot spring geisha. Arthur Golden melded the two together with 'Memoires', but in truth these two types would never have mingled.

(Sorry this is so long!)

i haven't read the book but i've seen the movie although it's not what intaily got me interested. i have always been since i was little so i did independent research and even got on a web site that shows all the steps to becoming a giesha and what happens to a giesha after a while. it was really interesting. i didin't know though that "memiors" had so many errors in it. the movie in it's self is a very good movie.
