Cat was leaning against his desk, idly flicking through the large blank notebook he had purchased earlier that day. He had always been an avid journaler, and seeing such a fine (and pricey!) notebook as this going empty made something inside him uncomfortable. But, he reasoned with himself, this was for his student, not him. Even if he did want to use it, he would be wasting it; the emerald set into its cover guaranteed its ability to conduct his new student's magical power. So unless he wanted to spend another $330.85... No, no, it was better to set it aside and wait. He could always buy himself another journal on the way home.

Phoebe gulped and rubbed slightly at her eyepatch as she walked along, looking vaguely nervous about her upcoming class. Normally she would be excited, because learning things did tend to intrigue her... but she really didn't know what to expect with this. It wasn't like learning to make necklaces and bracelets - this was something deeper, more complex... she'd be an idiot to not be at least a little anxious!
Okay, this was where she was supposed to go... she peeked in, and waved a little at her new teacher. Oh, dear, he looked... he looked like he might be the same sort of being as her older sister, Kendra... she gulped. This... this could be bad,
"U-um... hello?"

Cat looked up at the soft voice, and smiled warmly up at the cautious girl poking her head around his door. His eyes lingered only briefly on the eyepatch, and then he didn't spare it a second glance, although he did wonder what was wrong. There was nothing about an eyepatch in her file. Moreover, for a Pride child, she certainly seemed demure. Maybe it just took a moment for her to get going, he reasoned to himself as he stood.
"Good afternoon. You're Phoebe, correct? My name is Cat, and I'll be your Spirituality teacher today. If I do my job right, you'll come out of my class with a magical skill to practice and hone, seeing as all of you children have an innate magical talent. Please, come in." He gestured for her to enter, then walked around his desk, journal in his hands.
"Now, to begin, your magical talent has much to do with the book in my hands now." Cat held the journal out for the girl to see, giving her a moment to take in all of its gold leafing and the genuine emerald set into the center. "Fancy, right? Well, that's because that emerald in the middle is real, and it helps conduct your magic. You have the power to see the future, Phoebe, but through a very specific medium: writing in this journal." Orange eyes flicked up to hers, and he smiled gently. "Do you have any questions so far? I know this is a lot to take in."

Phoebe giggled and stepped in fully, relaxing as she realized that no, this Cat person was not a mean person like Kendra, and thus it was perfectly safe to really talk and get to know him! "It's nice to meet you, Mr. Cat! This is going to be fun I just know it - and I know I'll learn what you want to teach me, and I'll be really good at it and can show J-Mama and maybe I could even teach my little brother or maybe not if he's not magical at all but he can teleport so maybe he is - did you know I have a brother? He's the best little brother in the world and he has me for the best big sister!" Pausing long enough to take a breath, she was distracted by the book and inspected it curiously.
Her visible eye lit up and she positively beamed at her teacher now. Phoebe was no greed child, but she knew something valuable and special when she saw it - at least when it was a book. She'd grown up around fancy books, after all! "This is really for me? And writing to tell the future? That sounds a little bit like the book-magic J-Mama does.... but cooler!" Questions? Did she have a question? Well, she had a lot to say but just one thing to ask, her excitement nearly visible as she rocked back and forth on her feet.
"Can I start learning now, please?!?"

Cat was taken aback by the speed and fervor of the girl's speech, and sputtered uselessly with an awkward smile on his face throughout the entire monologue. By the time she was done, he had his hands held up in surrender, his grin now more genuine. It was impossible not to be charmed by Phoebe's exuberance, her prattling aside. "W-Wow, that all sounds pretty intense. Uh... I'm sure you'll do great as well, and no, I wasn't aware that you had a brother. I'm sure he's... He's just great." He beamed at the girl, pleased that his expensive gifts hadn't been wasted.
"Yup, it's really for you. Do me a favor and don't lose it though, it cost a pretty penny." Cat smiled again, gesturing to the shining gems inlaid into the cover. "Not that you should worry too much about it, though; as long as you hone your skill, no expense is too much. Now, here's what I want you to do..." Trailing off, he rummaged through his pockets, then the drawers of his desk before drawing out a simple quill and a bottle of odd, silvery ink. "This kind of magic is very traditional, so you'll have to use items like these if you want to tell the future. Anything else will just be words. So, here you are." He placed the two items on a simple desk that was placed to the side of the room.
"Now, take a seat and clear your mind. Your power is already inside you, so you just need to allow it to flourish. Ideally, you will begin to form an idea, and once you begin writing it down, it will expand by itself and become something that depicts a future event." His smile was kind as he leaned against his desk. "Understand?"

Phoebe nodded and clapped a hand over her mouth to keep from talking during the explanation - as much as she liked chattering about herself and her family, she knew that not listening now could lead to problems later. When her new teacher pulled out the quill and silver ink, she squeaked, her eyes going wide.
"That looks almost like the ink J-Mama uses when she's making books talk for people!" her expression lit up, overjoyed at the thought of learning something as interesting as this, especially since it was similar to her mother's skills. "I'll do my best! I don't want to waste these pretties," she said, pigtails bouncing around as she nodded vigorously.
