*PREVIOUS ASSIGNMENTS*
Class please read over this and we will have questions assigned with it later. We will also go over N-Z in our next lesson, enjoy.
Dangerous or Poisonous plants A-M Aconite (also known as monkshood and wolfsbane) is a plant with magical proprieties. Once wide-spread, this plant is now only found in wild places. Its flowers are useful in potion-making, but its leaves are very toxic. Aconite is most commonly known as an ingredient of Wolfsbane Potion.
Belladonna is a mundane plant with magical uses. Fluids from the poisonous plant are used by students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Potions class, where it is a part of their standard potion making-kit. Other names for Belladonna are Atropa, Deadly Nightshade, Deaths Herb, Dwale, and Witch's berry. The seed of the Belladonna plant is purple.
Devils Snare Hermione: "Devil's Snare, Devil's Snare...what did Professor Sprout say? - it likes the dark and damp" Harry: "So light a fire!" Hermione: "Yes - of course - but there's no wood!" Ron: "HAVE YOU GONE MAD? ARE YOU A WITCH OR NOT?" Hermione: "Oh, right!" — Hermione, Harry, and Ron struggle with Devil's Snare[src] Devil's Snare is a plant with magical properties. Its power is the ability to constrict or strangle its surrounding environment. Struggling or resistance to Devil's Snare will cause the plant to exert a greater force of constriction. Devil's Snare does not seem to be common, but certain florists or herbologists have access to it. It is composed of a mass of soft, springy tendrils and vines that possess some sense of touch. This plant uses its creepers and tendrils to ensnare anyone who touches it, binding their arms and legs and eventually choking them. The harder a person struggles against Devil's Snare, the faster and more tightly it binds them; if they relax, it will not kill them as quickly. Devil's Snare prefers a dark, damp environment. It will stop its movement in the environment in front of bright light and will recoil away from the heat of fire, so a well-placed flame spell such as bluebell flames will drive it away from its victims.
A Fanged Geranium is a magical flower with sharp teeth. There is widespread historical speculation that the Muggle War of the Roses actually started with wizarding neighbours arguing over a Fanged Geranium.
Hellebore is a flowering plant used in Herbology and as an ingredient in Potion-brewing. Syrup of Hellebore is a substance extracted from the Hellebore plant. Many species of Hellebore are poisonous.
Mandrakes "The cry of the Mandrake is very fatal to anybody who hears it" —Hermione Granger A Mandrake, also known as Mandragora, is a plant which has a root that looks like a human (like a baby when the plant is young, but maturing as the plant grows). A Mandrake's fatal scream is very similar to (if not the same as) a banshee's scream, which is also fatal. Whenever unearthed, the root screams. The scream of a mature Mandrake when it is unearthed will kill any person who hears it, but a young Mandrake's screams will usually only knock a person out for several hours. When Hogwarts students study Mandrakes in Herbology class, Pomona Sprout had the students wear earmuffs to protect their ears from the Mandrake's cries. Mandrakes not only resemble humans, but also have similar behaviours to them. In the 1992–1993 school year, the mandrakes, at one point of time, became moody and secretive, which indicated that they were reaching adolescence. And later on, they threw a loud party, which is comparable to humans when they are teenagers. Hagrid also mentioned the Mandrakes having acne. Mandrakes are fully matured when they start moving into each others pots, similar to adult humans marrying and moving in together. When matured, Mandrakes can be cut up to serve as a prime ingredient for the Mandrake Restorative Draught, which is to cure those who have been Petrified. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Mandrakes were used against Death Eaters.
