Let's get to know each other a little better. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
PostPosted: Mon Jan 10, 2011 9:34 am

Hello, my name is Samii. I am twenty years old and I live in South Dakota. I'm orginally from Minnestoa but I moved in with my boyfriend. We currently own two dogs. Buddy, a great dane and Bella, a pug. I own this guild, and a charity thread on Gaia. I've been on this site since Jan o4'. I love hot pink, hello kitty, horror movies, chocolate, coffee, and my family and friends. My best friend in real life is a crew member to this guild.

Hello, everyone! My name is Ricky, but I prefer Piggy, and I live in Sacramento, California. :3 I am also twenty, well... I will be in May. >.< I currently attend a community college and declared in Physics/Mathematics. At this point, I'm not sure if I am actually going to go through with college as I am trying to find a fulltime job so I can move out of my parents house. I'm also an aspiring author, and hope to actually finish a book someday. : p

As for my history on this site, I am also a member since 2004, but this is an old mule account turned into a main account. My old main was Darth Ayo and I was an RP regular. This account used to be called [EgadBatman!] and was a CeeBee whore. But, now I am just a Heaven regular and have applied to be a Moderator. :3

My real name is Iliana, but every one calls me Lana. I am thirteen years old (do NOT comment about my age), and I live in Tennessee. I like books (of course), creating sketches of characters in the books i write or a friends,
sculpting, hanging out with my friends, and music: lots and lots of music. Some i listen to: Anna Blue, Sarah Barielles, Lady Antebellum, Three Days Grace, Nickelback, P!nk heart heart , Jason Mychal Carol, and a BUNCH more. i dont like cooking, people who think they're better than me and think that they can do whatever they want and have a "holier than thou" attitude, coconut, and fish. I don't know why but i dont like fish smile

My name is Kristi, I am a 24-year-old nurse's aide currently residing in Michigan.
I've been a bibliophile for as long as I can remember, and was geeked to see this thread pop up in Heaven.

Here's hoping that this guild gets it's feet off the ground, and keeps running~ <3333

EDIT:
Ohmy. I should probably flesh this out a bit. For clarity, you should probably call me Rew, that's been my Gaia nickname since January of '05.
While I'm always interested in learning new things, there isn't ONE subject that I'm a master of. I tend to be more informal in my typing habits, just because I'm an informal thinker. If I get to be too silly, just slap me back to my senses... xD;;

I. Read. Everything. My tastes vary so wildly... It's hard to put together a list of authors that I enjoy. I AM a rabid reader of webcomics however...

My musical tastes run the same vein, I'm not a fan of newer country and hardcore rap however.

All in all, I'm just the sort of person that you need to talk to to figure out. I don't bite. ;D

I'm Aachren and, no, that's not the name my parents gave me, but that is unfortunately too prosaic for me to use here.
I'm old and I tend to read old books...as in, I haven't read much that's very modern or new.
I will always type everything out in complete sentences with proper punctuation and spelling and I will always underline or italicize the names of books.
I'm a chemist.
I live in the American South.
I watch hockey and root for the Detroit Red Wings.
I'm a fan of Kate Beaton's comics to be found here and in my signature.
I love to cook.
My taste in music is as schizophrenic as my taste in genres of books, so very.
I do not like books that are in series, nor do I like love triangles.
While not feeling comfortable calling myself a feminist, I dislike reading books about weak-minded heroines.

Hello, I'm Infinity Outlaw, though I don't mind if you shorten that to either Infinity or Outlaw. I'm a 21 year old college student who'll be graduating in May with a double major in Classics and Anthropology. As one might guess from my Classics major, I'm interested in Greek and Roman writing, especially mythology. I always love seeing mythology subtly woven into modern stories. I'm a huge fan of sci-fi, with fantasy being my second most read genre. In particular I'm a sucker for most things cyberpunk, zombie, and steampunk. Good world-building is also always a plus. My current favorite authors are Philip K. d**k, China Mieville, Jeff Vandermeer, Ray Bradbury, William Gibson, J.R.R. Tolkien, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Haruki Murakami, Alexander Dumas, and Alan Moore.

Other than reading books in my time not taken up with school work, I also am a member of my school's culinary club and I'm a member of the quidditch team. I don't have the time/money to practice at a school anymore, but I practice Taekwondo, in which I have my blackbelt, and Tai Chi on my own, with a bit of Qigong thrown in. I'm a sucker for things related to astronomy and archeaology. My favorite TV show currently airing is Doctor Who, though I love to rewatch a lot of off-the-air sci-fi too. I dislike overly pretentious people, willful ignorance, romance taking over an otherwise good book, and large crowds.

Also, I'm a bit socially awkward, so don't be offended if you think I sound terse sometimes or you think I'm blowing you off. I try to be outgoing/social, and I'm a bit better on the internet where I can type and review my responses, but there's a lot of days where my mind completely blanks on social interaction or I just have the overwhelming urge to lock my door and not communicate with anyone.

Duchess Porphyria

PostPosted: Tue Jan 11, 2011 12:05 pm

Hello!
I use my Gaia name on here, mostly because then I can keep track of people and where I met them; so please call me Duchess.
Yes it's a Browning reference, thank you for jumping on that bus with me.
I am married to a wonderful man and we have two beautiful little girls, a five-year-old named Christina and a four-month-old named Nola. I will be 30 in February, my birthday is on the 13th, yes that was a Friday when I was born.
I am still working on finishing my coursework to get into the credential program, I want to teach 4th grade, but I'll take what I can get.
I am also planning on getting a Masters in English, because I ultimately want to teach at the jr college level.
I am an excellent cook, most of the time.
I garden and I can or preserve most of what I grow.
I do photography, and make money off of it, but not enough to make that my job.
I read non stop, I often have more than one book going at once.
I like most genres and writing styles, but can be picky when it comes to individual books.
My book selections can be a little off the wall, but as most of us are over the age of 18 I don't think there will be too much of a problem with the reading list.

As you may have noticed, I type the way I talk. So lots of commas, line breaks and other bits of punctuation that are not necessarily being used properly. I hope that doesn't get on anyone's nerves.

Finally, I have mild dyslexia. So it takes me longer to type and express myself than for other people. I will also commonly get words mixed up or misspelled, and you have my apologies in advance.

For reference my favorite authors are:
G. R. R. Martin, J. R. R. Tolkien, Chris Van Allsburg, Chuck Palahniuk, Shakespeare, William Blake, Tennyson, Robert Browning, Mary Wordsworth, Dr. Seuss, Tamora Pierce.
There are many others who I really like but haven't read enough of to call them a favorite.

OK, so I know that's a lot of information, but still; let me know if you have any questions.
See you all soon.
Duchess

Hullo~

I am Pia, or you can call me cere or ulcer or w/e I'll pretty much answer to anything~
I work at an online 'adult store' and I love to bake & have been thinking recently of trying to sell baked goods.. I also love taking pictures, but I kinda suck at it & my camera is 7 years old and it makes me feel better to blame the camera instead of my lack of skills.

And like Duchess up there, I also type the way I talk.. which can probably get annoying for other people, so sorry for that.. I try to stop it when I notice I'm doing it, but most of the time I really don't notice until someone is like "Please repeat that in English, I don't speak Pianese fluently."

I have been on Gaia for far too long, but that's okay, it's made me some awesome friends over the years.

I have some trouble reading & comprehending, but I'm hoping that reading more books, different authors & the like will help me with that..

Yeah. O:

Howdy, book club~

My names Dwayne, you may call me Fosra, Fos, and or Fossy. I'm 24 years old and live in Atoka, Oklahoma (for now). And no, that does not make me an okie.

I love to draw, write, and read. Though reading should be a gimme, and I've been neglecting my writing. Shame on me. I also love Football; American football, or what else was it called? Foosball? Lets just say sports!

Music, my taste in music varies. I have a large selection that I enjoy.

I'm sure there is more, there is always more.

Hola.
My name is Drea, I am eighteen years old and I have no life. I am for the most part, a full time Gaian, its sad really.
I currently live in North Central Iowa but I am originally from The Queen City in New Hampshire.
I love to read, write, draw, eat, and sleep. I am a ginger and I go back and forth from being cynical and laid back to obnoxious happy peppy.

My tastes on pretty much everything varies, I just don't like sap, unless it comes in bottles to pour on chocolate chip pancakes. Though I do like romance lol

Name's Jude, but I usually go by Vetis even in real life. M over thirty, originally from London but I moved to the D.C. area in the States about 10 years ago. I'm a professional chef by trade, currently the head of and, really, entire pastry department at my workplace. Like those above me, I tend to type as I talk, which usually means some delightfully obscure colloquialisms and odd turns of speech will work themselves in.

As for my tastes in literature, my tastes vary well enough, but with a definite leaning towards the sci-fi/fantasy genres. I usually avoid nonfiction like the plague, the celebrity books are usually self-serving and/or ghostwritten, and really, I'm not that interested in what they think anyway. Just the other day I saw a nonfiction book with a weird orange creature called a "Snooki" on the cover. I am profoundly grateful that I gave up on tv ages ago, and was never a huge fan to begin with, because I might be one of the last people living in this country that has no idea what the hell a Snooki is, except perhaps a descendant of a rogue Oompa Loompa.

I was fortunate enough, as a kid, to have access to a large private library, which means I was cutting my teeth on Dante, Homer, and Virgil before my tenth birthday, and have kept reading avidly since. I used to give my teachers fits, when the reading lists would come out for the lit classes, I'd go down and say things like "read it-was ok, read it-sucked, read it-boring..." so on, so forth XD. On average I'd already read over 3/4 of the books on the list long before, and for the ones I liked, for example the Inferno, I usually knew more than the teachers themselves. Naughty of me, I know, but I've always had a impish streak, and it's not like they were going to get me in trouble for being too well-read.

There have been many authors that have changed my life with their works, and I'll list the most prominent.

Terry Pratchett - perhaps our greatest living satirist fantasy writer, a true master who's "bad" books are still superior to virtually anything

Dante Alighieri - there aren't too many authors that create works that motivate you to learn something of their native language and history in order to properly appreciate, but because of his Commedia Divina, I know quite a bit of Florentine history and a decent smattering of Italian.

Michael Moorcock - his Elric saga basically saved the swords-and-sorcery genre from becoming stale and trite

Fritz Leiber - some of the earliest tales I ever read were those of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, and they have a fond place in my heart

Fyodor Dostoevsky - Crime and Punishment has always been one of my favorite re-reads

and, of course, Tolkien, who's hobbits and other delightful denizens of Middle Earth grabbed my imagination and refused to let go to this day.

Vetis
