Moam laid down next to the brightly colored basket on the forest floor. He very gingerly rested his head on its lid, making sure that if anyone would try to steal it, that the movement would wake him up. It was a cold, yet beautiful day, the sun's rays streaking through the openings in the trees warming up his skin. Thankfully, it was warm enough to start melting some of the fresh snow that had fallen the night before. Soon he would be able to find more suitable shelter before winter throws its next hurdle at him.

Moam thought of everything that had happened so quickly in his life. First he fell in love with a beautiful mare. Sure she was hyperactive and a bit naive, but that is what had charmed him. However, too soon for him to handle, she became pregnant. He became a father and was left with a basket as she moved on with another stallion and the other basket. Wait... hadn't there been three? Instinctively he scooted closer and around his soon-to-be foal. It was too difficult to keep track of these things...

Saluki trodded softly upon the floor of the woods - silent enough to keep the birds chirping and happy, but not silent enough to stay hidden by the ears of others. The Orange Paint Uni Stallion weaved carefully between the trees, carrying something large in his mouth.

Within his past few days in this lands, he had stumbled across something... different. A basket, left alone in the cold. He was more than sure that it was purely by accident. When he had found it there were bits of dirt and grass stuck along the top of the basket, which he could only guess that it had tumbled away. But for now, he carried the basket in his blanket. He idly wondered, thinking to himself... "Dang... this basket is heavy.."

He saw a very small clearing up ahead and smiled a bit. A perfect place to relax. The chill of the breeze ruffled the fur where his blanket normally rested and made him shiver. Perhaps a bit of sunning would do him good.

He broke through the ragged treeline and began a gentle trot... only... to slow upon seeing a rather large... and armored?... Stallion resting under the nearby tree he had had his eyes on.

Crap....

He paused, stopping completely as he looked over the stallion, noting that he was guarding something... something that looked oddly similar to the basket that he carried and had 'hidden away' within the warmth of the blanket. This big guy, however, looked far more intimidating than he had hoped. Perhaps it was the armor....?

He stepped a little closer and stopped where he knew he could easilly pick back up and run if he needed to. There he gently rested his bundle down between his hooves then looked up again.

"Uh... Hi..." he stammered. 'Way to go, Saluki! Great opener!' "I hope I'm not intruding. I'm just looking for a place to rest?"

Moam was humming a quiet little tune to himself and the basket. He was under the impression that what was in the basket could hear and therefor should be hearing pleasant things. And THAT is why he didn't appreciate the interruption by the strange stallion. Eye's flying open, he bolted upright, unfolding and brandishing his wings. His attempt to look larger was futile, but he had to protect the basket.

Staring at the other stallion, Moam breathed heavily. Well, at least its not a kalona or a skinwalker... he thought to himself.

Realizing what the stranger said, he allowed himself to calm down. Mumbling a quick apology at his protectiveness, Moam slowly folded his wings in and dipped his head, not wanting to appear a fiend. He knew his looks could be deceiving, but he really was a kind soquili.

"Who are you?" he asked cautiously, standing in between the basket and the newcomer.

Saluki lowered his head - probably appearing as if he was raising his horn in self-defense - when the other jumped up. He then blinked as he seemed to calm a bit, though it was obvious he was being very protective in the moment.

He lifted his head again once the other Stallion seemed to continue conversation.

Phew...

"The name's Saluki." He started, bowing his head softly in a greeting sort of way. He then took a couple steps forward, putting himself between the other and the covered basket he himself had been toting about. "And you?" he then asked, flicking his ears forward with his query.

His lime green eyes flitted quickly over the winged stallion's basket, taking in the somewhat familiar patterns and markings it kept. Perhaps his luck was with him today. They looked strikingly familiar to the ones on his basket. Perhaps the two belonged together. He had the ever growing urge to ask about the other's basket - where it came from, if there were more, etc... - but a small part of him wasn't ready to let the basket he had go. He liked its company, even though he always knew he'd eventually have to leave it...

His tail flicked at his own thoughts as he listened to the other reply.

Moam watched as the orange stallion lowered his horn. s**t... I over reacted. was all he could think. Thankfully the air seemed less tense after he said something.

"I am Moam. I'm sorry for my... rash behavior a bit ago. I'm easily startled with the little one." He nodded in the direction of his basket. Noticing Saluki's protective demeanor as well, he wondered just what it was that was being protected.

Better not to ask about it unless he starts acting suspicious... He finally decided. And its probably better to wait to give an invitation for rest until after i figure out this guys intentions.

Moam watched as the other stallion glanced at his basket, making him uncomfortable. Hopefully the stranger wasn't here to steal his basket. He swiveled his ears back, with a confused look on his face. Moam would be willing to fight to the death for his baby. It was the only thing he had left to remind him of her. His green eyes were wide and watched for any signs of aggressive movement from Saluki.

Saluki's ears perked at full attention to the Stallion now. "No need to apologize." he chuckled, lowering his head to gently nudge at the bundled up mass he was standing over. "I completely understand..."

Best not ask anything about the basket I found till I find out more about this guy... He eyed the balled up blanket briefly. Just stay bundled up for now, little guy...

He looked around a bit. "I'm actually a bit new to these parts. I come from the other side of the waters. This is all new territory to me, so I greatly apologize if I... er... stumbled over a piece of your territory."

He shifted a bit on his feet, feeling another chilling breeze drift over him and he swished his tail a bit to the wind - aggravated at the fact that it would try and tease him back under his blanket. That would leave "his" basket out in the cold, and he couldn't have that.

Moam watched as he nudged the bundled something. No Moam... resist temptation to ask... RESIST! At least for now... He chuckled a bit, "Yeah this cold does nothing good for my mood."

So he's a traveler huh? He doesn't look too dangerous. "No no no, you didn't intrude on any territory. I am a traveler as well, just seeking to make it through this winter." Some snow fell from the branch of a tree above and hit his back. He cursed and shook his fur.

Moam's eyes softened as he saw the stallion react to the cold. I think thats what were all trying to do... Feeling guilty for his earlier assumptions he slowly said, "You are more than welcome to be in my company for a bit. I was just getting ready to get up and try and find a more sheltered area. There isn't anything worse than frost bitten ears."

At this, he lowered his head again, gathering the edges of the blanket in his mouth lifting carefully to make sure the basket wouldn't drop before he began to move, walking to stand a few feet from the stallion. He then lowered the basket beside the base of the tree before lowering himself into a shivering flop on the ground beside it. The idea was to block wind from attacking his basket from two angles at least.

"Is it usually this cold here?" he asked finally, flopping his ears about idly as another shiver racked his body. He was generally used to warmer climates... the winter breezes that hit his old home didn't have quite so much a bite as this area's air did.

He listened, taking in a much closer inspection of the other's basket and confirming all of his questions - and by now his fear of possibly losing his basket. But that would come in time.

Moam tried to remain relaxed as the stallion approached him. He knew the stranger probably meant no harm... but he always had to be careful with his basket. It contained the most precious thing to him at the moment.

Slowly he laid down himself, resting his head on his basket once again. "Only for a few months, thank the spirits. The winter air is coming to an end soon. At least these forests are sheltered from most predators, and its peaceful." A good place to raise a foal...

Moam could tell Saluki was examining his basket. This heightened his curiosity. "Say... what do you have in the blanket there. If you don't mind me asking?" So much for resisting

Saluki flicked his tail nervously and his ears swiveled as if a bit uneasy. Now's better than never... I guess...

"I- It's a basket." he tried to act rather proud - as if it was his own... or for as long as the blanket kept it covered. He then nodded to the other's basket. "Where's it's mother?" he asked, now curious as to why the stallion guarded his all alone. He didn't mean to sound as if he was prying, just innocently asking.

Moam was startled to say the least. He didn't expect such a young stallion to already have a foal. Well, at least i know for sure now that he's trust-able. He could tell by Saluki's tone that he was rather proud and fond of the bundled-up basket. "Congratulations!" a genuine smile plastered on his face.

Moam's smile faltered a bit when he heard the question, not really wanting to think of her this soon. "The mother is living not too far from here with the other two baskets." he sighed, gazing lovingly down at his foal. He could have sworn he felt what was almost like a light kick against it's lid.

He caught on to the faultering grin and realized that he perhaps stepped on the wrong hoof with his question. Something must of happened between them and he appeared somewhat hurt by it all. Perhaps returning the basket now would be best....?

It was here that he chuckled nervously. "Well... Sort of..." he chuckled a bit sheepishly. "It's a basket... but... I found it... so, I'm afraid that it isn't mine..." he looked as if he would be heartbroken if he spoke anymore of it.

He smiled softly at the sight of the other's basket seeming to fidget. "And in all honesty... I don't know if I should be relieved or torn to have run into you..."

'C'mon big guy, it's too late to back out now... Be a stallion... Be a Stallion! You can do it!' he silently gave himself the encouragement.

"Well... You see...." he grunted and sighed. 'Here goes nothing...' He took the corner of the blanket and tugged it off the side, showing but a small portion of the basket's side. The side with the soft blend of pink and purple with white stripes grazing over it.

"I found it on its side and against the base of a tree at the bottom of a hill not too far away." He spoke quickly. "I don't think it tumbled far, and the one inside didn't seem injured. It shuffles from time to time. And I've been keeping it bundled up in my blanket when it gets cold." There he went a rambling again.

Moam could hear and see the sadness in the stallion as he spoke of the basket. Why would he feel sad? Having a basket is a joyous occasion...

His thought process trailed off as Saluki uncovered the bundle. Wait a minute... that looks a lot like one of Stripes and mines baskets. At the bottom of a hill not far from here? Didn't Stripe live on one with Eeyore? That's our basket!!

Moam bolted upright. Now he knew why the stallion sounded distraught, it made perfect sense. His ears pinned back against his neck and his wings flared up. Anger was present in his eyes and his harsh hoof stomps as he paced back and forth, looking very much like an angered rooster.

"How could she be so careless? What if the little one would've gotten hurt?! WHAT WAS SHE THINKING!!!" he roared to no one in particular. "Spirits, I knew I shouldn't have given her responsibility of two baskets! But I thought 'Hey, maybe since she's got Eeyore, she would be more able to take care of two than I.' I was WRONG." He threw his neck into the side of a tree as he stormed by.

PostPosted: Tue Feb 01, 2011 9:08 am

Saluki's lips seemed to continue without the voice to keep talking as the other stallion jumped up and grew angry. He was thankful that he put himself in front of the basket he'd been caring for, but also fearful that he himself would get hurt in the process. He jumped as hooves started to pound, carefully positioning himself over the basket so he could keep it safe from the rampaging Stallion.

"Hey! Calm down! There's no use getting angry over it now. That was days ago!" His brow furrowed as the other's neck slammed against the tree. "And it won't do either of your foals any good if you injure yourself...." he snorted and shook his own mane before flicking his tail in mild frustration of the situation.

'Damn, this guy has a temper... At least I know he cares for the little buggers...' he thought to himself as he attempted to guard the blanketed basket amidst the other's thrashing and stomping about.

Moam was so blinded by fury that he almost didn't hear the other stallions reasoning. He swung himself around, fire in his eyes and his heart. Yet, the moment he saw Saluki protecting the baskets... his baskets..., it was like someone threw ice water on him.

He looked down at his hoofs, ashamed of himself. He could have hurt his foals. "I can't believe this happened. It's my fault... I should've taken two of the baskets..." Moam sighed in agony as he fell back on his knees. "Your right. Thank the spirits you came across it before something bad did."

His eyes were foggy and unfocused as he looked off into the distance. What do i do now?
