It was a hazy day in the swamp, the sun trickling hotly down through the canopy of moss and vines. Meets-the-Sea was tired, the heat soaking into the black fur on her back and head making her lazy and uncomfortable. She was on her way to the ocean, and her longing for the feeling of the cool salt breeze against her skin only served to make the heavy, oppressive heat of the swamp even more unpleasant.

It was nearly mid day when Meets found her energy failing, deciding to stop for a rest at the first pool of cool spring water that she could find. She cast her eyes around her, wishing for once (for she was a solitary creature and didn't usually wish for company) that she had a pet or familiar companion who might help her search for the clear, fresh water that she was craving.

Ever-Distant knew it was there. Somewhere in the Swamp, it was there. A glimmering lake, cool and serene, with a silvery tree rising from its center, naked branches stretching out to cast shifting shadows on the lake. It called to him, pulled him on a winding path through the Swamp.

This lake was not the one in his dream, but it was still beautiful, wonderfully cool during the hottest part of the day; he waded into it, and investigated a bush growing at its side with interest.

And so, through the tiny berries on the bush and the twisting roots of the mangroves, he spotted a doe. "Hello there," he called, lifting his head so she could see him.

Meets started at the voice of the unseen Kimeti and looked around her frantically, backstepping lightly in surprise. Catching a flicker of gold in the sun, her eyes finally fell upon the buck, his head peeking up at her through a bush growing against the roots of a mangrove tree.

"H-hello," she stuttered, blinking at him, her eyes caught in the curling weaves of his golden hair. "Is...is that a...are you standing in a lake? I'm nearly dying of thirst." The sentence came to the shy doe more easily than she would have expected, but she blamed it on her heat-hazed mind and the shock of stumbling across another Kimeti so unexpectedly.

"I am. You should come and drink, then -- this heat is oppressive." The more he searched, the more certain he was that the lake of his dream was not to be found in the Swamp, where hot, thick air blanketed the branches and weighed on his back.

He stepped out of the lake, with a shake of his fur, and stepped through the trees so she could see the route through. "This way."

"Oh thank you," Meets replied, her voice full of gratitude as she trotted towards the water, her legs wobbly from the heat. "I'm not used to such heavy heat like this," she continued, surprising herself with her own talkativeness. "I usually try to stay out of the swamp during these heat waves, but I just wasn't expecting this...ahhh." The doe let out a pleased sigh as her hooves and legs sunk into the cool(er) water of the lake. "That's much better," she replied, bending down to drink her fill of the cool, clear water.

Looking back up at the buck, Meets found an unusual smile flitting across her face. "Thank you so much, sir. I'm Meets-the-Sea...you can call me Meets." She bowed her head respectfully to the golden-haired buck.

"It's unusually hot for the season; even the mosquitos grow weary in midday." Even as he stood there, waiting for her, the heat was already making his damp legs and hair feel sticky. When she stepped into the lake, he eased back into the water as well, relieved.

"Please, don't call me sir. My name is Ever-Distant; some call me Far."

Meets found her usual shyness tempered by the heat -- and besides, the buck's own demeanor was pleasant, and rather soothing. Though she usually enjoyed her solitary existence, she had been yearning lately for a little quiet company.

"Far...it's nice to meet you," she responded, smiling up at the blonde-haired buck. "This is a wonderful spot you've found to keep cool on a day like this...I apologize if I've intruded on your private time."

"The pleasure is all mine, Meets." He smiled sideways at her. "Oh, of course not. To tell the truth, I normally wander alone; it can get quite lonely, and I'm glad to hear the voice of another kimeti. From where do you come?"

Meets' head tilted up to look at the sky, the sun shining so hotly through the branches of the mangrove trees that no birds dared to brave the heat of the empty blue. "I come from nowhere, really," the doe responded, tilting her face back down to the coolness of the pool and taking another drink. "I'm a bit of a wanderer too, in fact -- I spend most of my time wandering back and forth from the swamp to the ocean." She smiled up at Far once more. "It's nice to meet someone so like-minded...I don't always see eye to eye with most Kimeti."

Even the birdsong was drowsy and murmurous in the heat of midday, and the lazy droning of insects only made the air heavier and sleepier. "The ocean? I have never been so far south. What is it like?"

His interest was piqued -- and he nodded, understandingly. "I know what you mean. I myself am a dreamer -- too much so, for kimeti who prefer to live in the present." He let them go their way, and usually they let him go his, but it was a rare pleasure for him to meet a like-minded doe.

Meets paused for a moment to take a real good look at the buck, her eyes filled with overwhelming curiosity and a sudden feeling of companionship that she had never before experienced. What Far said had struck a familiar chord in her, and she was nearly bursting with excitement to know more about him.

Realizing she was staring, Meets looked away quickly, bringing herself back to the conversation at hand. "The ocean is...amazing," she said, trying to find the words in her to describe something that was so vast and wonderful and so deeply ingrained a part of herself. "Huge, with rolling, crashing water that surrounds you with its taste and smell and sound...there is nothing quite like it." She looked back up at Far and smiled, a little embarrassed at her failure to explain properly. "It's...difficult to put into words. Really, one must see it for oneself."

Meets chuckled, soft and pleasant -- a sound that she rarely made, except perhaps quietly to herself when she was bemused by the antics of a mongoose or foxbun. "I tend to get a bit lost inside my head," she replied, nodding her head and smiling at Far, "So yes, I definitely understand your meaning."

He smiled sideways at her, not minding the stare at all. It was surprisingly comforting to meet another kimeti like him, who understood what he meant. "Perhaps I should travel there to see it. I am looking for -- somewhere quiet. Cool. Peaceful. A lake, with a silver tree and golden leaves..."

He trailed off, then blinked and shook his head slightly, almost dislodging the flowers that were so carefully tucked into his hair. "Apologies. I do tend to ramble." Exactly what they'd been talking about.

Meets tilted her head in thought, her right hear twitching slightly as she searched her memory. "I have traveled much, but I fear I have never seen such a place. I'm sure I would remember such beauty."

The doe smiled and laughed softly, taking a few gliding steps forward through the water towards Far. "Careful, you'll lose your flowers," she said, reaching up and taking the stems gently in her mouth and pushing them into a more secure position. "They are beautiful," she murmured, stepping back. "I have never seen their like before."

Ever-Distant only smiled, and shook his head. "I begin to wonder whether I will ever find it, but I am sure that the Motherfather showed it to me in my dream for a reason. I only need understand it."

He held still when Meets approached, letting her tuck the flowers back. "Thank you. If you'd like, I can show you where I usually find them; they are rare, but worth it."

Meets swished her tail back and forth thoughtfully in the water as she stepped back from the buck. "I am sure you will find it some day, just as I found my dream of the sea."

The lingering smell of the flowers still remained in her nose. "I would be honored," she replied, flattered that Far should be willing to share her the location of such a rare precious flower. "And I...I would be happy to show you the sea sometime, if you wish...though it is a rather long journey."
