[Location: Hallowmarl]

The heat in Hallowmarl was something that required getting used to. Luckily Leandar was very much used to it, having spent his entire life there. Taking refuge under a tree, his tiny wildcat ears twitched. Searching the surrounding area like two small satellite dishes for any sound. Leandar was bored and looking for another member of his tribe.

In a den not too far away from Leander, a 'Coon stretched herself awake, having successfully slept through the worst of the afternoon heat. Uninterrupted naps are pure bliss, Valerie thought to herself, as she cheerfully headed out of her stone home for a wash.

She was some ways to the nearest well when she spotted a fellow desert resident, one she had yet to meet; a fine feline, he was, and looking rather bored. Wildcats were known to be ferocious fighters, and Val wasn't opposed to having a new sparring partner. Besides, being on good terms with one's neighbors was a good idea in Hallowmarl.

"Hello, tomcat!" She quipped, stopping at respectful enough a distance. "What larks?"

"Wildcat. Tomcats are a distant cousin. Far superior to a coon... Hello," Leandar replied. The shade from the desert tree provided him with all the comfort he needed at the moment, but this raccoon could be this afternoon's entertainment. The sun was high in the sky, and it had been many hours since his last drink, and that was just after sunrise. Leandar had tried to go to a favorite watering hole of his, a well-hidden oasis, but the scorching sun had long depleted all the water. "Got any water," he questioned?

Whoops. Not a good start.

"My bad, I was told all male cats were tomcats," Valerie said, inwardly taking little notes. Arrogant. Could do with taking down a notch. Is there an empty well I could shove him down if he gets unbearable? Hrmmm.

"At any rate, I know a well nearby I was about to head to myself. I can show you the way, if you can stand the company of an "inferior raccoon"." She stretched out a paw and made a vague indication of direction, her last words closer to a playful tease than any real sarcasm.

"I've been in worse company I suppose..." Standing up like a bipedal, the cat stretched, letting the warm sun wash over his body like a wave. Returning to rest on four legs, Leandar strolled over to Valerie. "My name's Leandar, member of the Hallowmarl tribe, and your name?..." The fun-loving cat waited for a reply, in addition to the raccoon's name.. It simply wouldn't do to call her "inferior raccoon" the whole way...

"Oh, darn. I was hoping your name really would be Tom." She grinned, bushy tail flicking behind her. "I'm Valerie, and we're both on home turf here.

Follow me."

The raccoon trotted towards the well, leaving a trail of prints in the sand.

"Say, you strike me as someone who's been around these parts for a while... mostly because you haven't fainted from the heat yet. How's it that you don't know where all the fresh wells are?" She asked, cocking an eyebrow.

The wildcat was confused by that question. To his knowledge, water sources in the desert were about as trustworthy as a sneaky raptor. "Water wells dry up all the time... one of the greatest challenges of living in the desert is finding water... Is it not?" The hot sand was beginning to irritate his paws as Leandar padded quickly across the scorching sands. For the moment he would put up with it. Unfortunately it wouldn't be dark for quite sometime. The feline scanned the desert seeking potential sanctuary.

Sand-coloured sand, sand-coloured vegetation, sand-coloured well. Valerie grasped the rope and deftly hoisted the bucket of water out of the well, pulley protesting all the way.

It wasn't long before the raccoon and the wildcat had their water.

"Ehh... I made some pals from helping to dig a few of them. Having friends in the right places helps; it's much faster finding wells by word of mouth than searching, no?" She said, winking as she cupped her paws and lifted the water to her face, rubbing the last bit of sleepgunk from her eyes.

"Speaking of which," she said, after downing a few more cups of water. "I've got a visit due with one of them right about... now. You have yourself a nice day, Leandar."

With that, she headed off into one of the nearby tunnel entrances. Perhaps their paths would one day cross again.

((Sorry about the hasty exit! I think I need to flesh out Val's character a little more before further writing, and I heard Prince was looking to join in but isn't used to group RP so I thought I'd clear out. Thanks for the RP!))

The wildcat nodded, dipping into well, he revived himself with more than a few cups of water. It would be a long time before the sun began it's slow descent out of the sky, and Leandar decided to find somewhere to wait it out... Thinking for a moment, nowhere seemed better than the vast expanse of tunnels that ran through the desert. "Adventure, ho!" The wildcat exclaimed loudly, joking to himself as he scurried into the tunnel system.

Robert yawned as he stretched his clenched paws outwards. He had completely lost track of time and overslept. Being deeper down in the burrows didn't really help his sleeping pattern. He scratched his ear and blinked groggily, trying to guess what time it was. He got off his make-shift bed made from a pile of dried up leaves and headed over to a clay bowl, splashing his face with the bit of water he saved last night from his trip to the well.

His stomach grumbled, and he rubbed it with his paw. Getting down on all fours, he crawled around sniffing, until he located what he was looking for. Pulling out a wrapped-up bundle of leaf, he unwrapped it to reveal several pieces of dried carrots. He munched on them to stall his hunger, noting to himself that he needed to go out and hunt for more food. What he wouldn't give to taste some fresh, succulent carrot and cabbage in this hothole.

His ears twitched as he heard something, and he quickly got up, grabbing his auburn robe which lay ontop of a rock, and fastened it around his shoulders with the rope and feather his sister had given him.

''Ruby...'' he murmured.

The echo seemed to get louder, and Robert headed near the exit of his burrow, ear pressed against the wall to try to hear where the voice came from.

Leandar came out of a nearby tunnel exit, the sun was beginning to set and the wildcat figured it would be a good time to reenter the outside world. Slowly pacing across the desert sands, he happened to pass by Robert's burrow on his way to forage for food and anything that peaked his interest.

The sound grew louder as Robert heard scampering and claws digging against sand. He hurried near the exit of his burrow when he caught a glimpse of yellow-orange flash by. He poked his head out to see the flick of a tail before it disappeared around the corner.

His interest piqued, Robert decided to venture out and see who that was, and began to follow the mysterious creature.

Leandar felt like he was being watched, followed, however he stowed the feeling, and continued marching onward. The idea had taken root in his mind to make a new dulcimer. Once when he was travelling along Route 65 to check out what all the rumors were about, Leandar found an old, abandoned dulcimer that needed strings to work. Improvising and using the things available to a forest creature, Leandar fixed the instrument, but time worn down on the dulcimer, and it was no longer of any use.

Looking over his shoulder casually, he spotted Robert following him. Leandar stopped and turned, "are you following me?"

Robert huffed as he tried to keep up with the mysterious creature. He hadn't seen anyone move so fast, and tried his best to not get lost. Of all his time living here, he was ashamed to admit there had been several occasions he had taken a wrong turn and ended up tumbling into someone else's burrow, much to his embarrassment.

He saw the figure turn the corner, and hurriedly rushed after it, not wanting to lose them. However, once he had turned, he noticed a tawny wildcat staring back at him with a quizzical look on his face. Embarrased, he mentally kicked himself for not thinking about what he was doing.

''Uh... yah, sorry.''

He scratched an ear with his paw, planting a sheepish grin on his face as he tried not to make himself seem more of a fool.

''I heard a shout, and just thought I'd see who it was. Sorry if I intruded on anything..''

He turned back around, prepared to head back to his burrow, squeezing his eyes shut for doing something so stupid.

Leandar grinned, perhaps a chance to make a friend in this barren desert, he thought. "I'm gonna go forage for things to make a guitar if you would like to come with me?" The wildcat turned to the face the other direction, continuing his headlong pace to west. He was headed to sunhedge, in order to get a stone. The world he lived in was not one without confrontation. Leandar was intending to make his musical instrument a weapon, carefree as he was, the wildcat was anything but naive.
