Normally the gentle kiss of the wind flowing over his feathers would feel comforting but on this occasion the only thing he could feel was the pain of overworked muscles in his shoulders. Though he had learned to fly long ago he had learned only to take off at a running start, now he was attempting to lift off while remaining in one place. He had once seen his father do this and it looked as though he had succeeded with much ease. Roman hadn’t any idea how long he had been at this or if he had made any progress but it was not in his personality to quit. Though he could rise off of the ground his wings grew tired rather rapidly and he would have to touch back down. Frustration and the desire to succeed drove him onward, even though his body was telling him to stop. “C’mon!” He growled. “If he could do it so can you!” Again his wings pounded furiously and again his feet lifted from the earth and unfortunately his muscles screamed in anguish sending him back down to the earth. Allowing his wings to droop he attempted to catch the breath that seemed to have so easily escaped him. Why was he such a failure? If those who gave him life could do something then it only made sense that he should be able to do it too correct? Squeezing his blue eyes shut he shook his head. His sister’s calm voice entered into the back of his mind, telling him not to be so harsh on himself.

After a moment the sound of a cool running creek not too far from his practice grounds caused him to take a break. It was not in his nature to leave something half finished but his body craved water and he was more than happy to comply. A deep sigh escaped his diaphragm as he began walking in the direction of the water. “Just a sip and back to work.” He mumbled. Upon reaching the shore of the stream he lowered his head and took a deep drink, allowing the water to slide down his throat and cool his aching body. No one needed to tell him that he pushed himself a little too hard at times, he knew this but he figured it was the only way for him to excel at anything. The thudding of his heart in his chest began to slow and the fire in his shoulders began to cool. Taking notice of these changes he stretched out his wings attempting to work out some of the knots he had put into them. Before night fall he would succeed, nothing would stop him.

She'd heard from her mothers familiar that there was a stream near by the herd lands that was said to hold some of the smaller water types. Oh yes those water types that she'd heard stories of from both her parents. Her mother feared the ocean not because of them but because she'd nearly been swept off to sea. how odd was it that she'd tell Briallan and her siblings about the water types even though she'd never really met one face to face? Her tail gave a happy waggle. She could smell the water ahead on the air how sweet and delicious it would taste after her trip out to find it. She wasn't ofter out and wondering on her own. Such things her sister usually did but not Bri, No she stayed closer to home on most days.

This day was different, this day she was actively looking for something on her own. She'd show her sister how non timid she could be. It wasn't till she was within eyesight of the stream that she spotted another figure in the distance. How strange the thought, Were there often so many random soquili wandering about on the outskirts of her mother's herd? Shrugging it aside, she nickered a soft greeting. She didn't want to scar him off after all.

The muffled sound of hooves pressing into the soft dirt around the creek bed caused Roman’s ears to swivel. Another would join him soon; the notion caused his heart to sink in his chest ever so slightly but the hopes that the other wouldn’t notice his presence kept him fairly optimistic. It wasn’t as though he detested the company of others it was just that when another was around he felt obligated to speak with them in order to remain polite. Normally this wouldn’t stir within him feelings of exasperation but he had set a goal to learn the task at hand and an interruption was not something he looked forward to. Lowering his head he attempted to make himself less visible but instead felt as though he were acting like some foolish colt who had wandered too far from his mother. When the gentle greeting reached his ears he knew he was done for, he couldn’t merely turn his rump and walk away like some snob. An image of his father, proud and chivalrous, appeared in his mind and he lifted his chin. He would greet whoever it was, see what they wanted then go back to work. No one said he needed to stand there communicating for hours, it would be even better if they had wings.

He didn’t see the white mare until she reached the water’s edge; it was then that he was able to make out the lack of wings upon her back. A soft inaudible sigh escaped him as he flashed a welcoming smile in response to her greeting. His blue eyes then trailed down to her cloven hooves of the likes he had only heard tales about. His mother had told him that Unicorns had such hooves but he could not discern a horn atop her crown. Feeling slight uncomfortable he allowed his gaze to wander to where her tail rested, immediately he was able to agree that she was not a Unicorn she was a……What was she? He hadn’t run across anything of this sort. “What are you?” He stated rather absentmindedly. His tone was not discourteous but rather gruff as opposed to welcoming. He hadn’t ever really been good with communicating, unless it was in a competitive or in an otherwise male sort of way. Also, he couldn’t get over the fact that the spirits hadn’t at least provided him with an interruption that had knowledge of flight. He wasn’t going to master anything at this rate….

Her tail gave a small waggle the a twitch before falling still. The question posed caused her a baffled look. Did not everyone know what a cerynei looked like? She supposed that maybe there just weren't as many as she'd though. Her father had seemed very normal to her but he hadn't given her a clue as to a number of his kind that there were. She decided to answer his question, regardless of hos gruff he'd been when asking it. "I'm half cerynei..." She blinked a few times as she looked at him, her tail giving another twitch. Lowering her head, she took a small drink then looked around the surrounding area. She'd become a tad more cautious about her surroundings after her run in with a hungry mountian lion. She'd rather be safe than sorry this time, her rump still reminded her with a fresh scab from her narrow escape.

Her response somewhat bewildered him, he didn’t expect such an eloquent term. Part of him wanted to say that she looked more part deer than anything else but he bit his tongue. He hadn’t even heard of such a breed, of course, his father hadn’t been very well versed in the way of diversity. “Oh.” He responded simply and watched as she lowered her head to drink. He had to admit that she was rather attractive, even for being part deer. Her coat was a clean white and her hair glowing silvery in the light. The thing he found unattractive was her lack of wings, she would never know the sky like he did. With a swish of his tail he lowered his head to take another sip of refreshing water. When he finished he looked to her again, one brow raised. “Why are you out here anyway? You get lost?” It was beyond him why a fragile looking mare such as herself would be by herself. Normally they would be traveling with their parents or siblings, not by themselves. Perhaps she was just brave, or stupid.

She looked to him once again her ears giving a small flick at the question. She'd come from a mother who had thrived on the excitement of the next big adventure it was only natural that she herself would wander around some. She didn't expect him to know this, no not a stranger. "I thought I'd take a better look around the area... I wanted to see what else was beyond my herd's lands you could say.. I'm Briallan by the way." She offered a small friendly smile. She'd seen another with wings before. But the mare had been a half and half like her, another half ceryenei. "What about you? Seeking adventure in the worl unknown?"

This mare was stronger than he had initially believed; perhaps the flowers in her hair weren’t a symbol of a dainty female. She had wandered out here alone and begun speaking with a strange stallion. With a snort he looked off to the side, focusing on a tree not too far from where they stood. “So, in an essence you came to stare at more trees and grass.” Turning his gaze back toward her pale form he couldn’t help but notice a scab upon her hind quarters. Had she tripped? Caught herself on a low hanging tree branch? No, it looked more like something living had done it to her. “That wound, did you get in a fight with another Soquili?” His methods for getting to know others weren’t exactly the smoothest or most polite. Through this whole encounter his tone had remained the same, it wasn’t pleasant but it wasn’t horrid either. Her name was an unusual one, it rolled around in his mind for a moment before he realized she probably wanted to know his name. “What kind of a name is that?” He chortled. In a sense he was asking the history behind it or the meaning but he didn’t get it across properly. It seemed to be his curse, not being able to word things in a polite manner. Puffing out his chest and ruffling his wings he smirked. “My name is Roman.” He chuckled at her last sentence. “World unknown? I haven’t the time for such folly. I am too busy attempting to better myself physically and mentally. Going around staring at scenery is not my style.”

She couldn't help but to laugh lightly. "In a sense.. I guess you could say that.. More or less getting to know the area surrounding where I and my siblings grew up..." She'd been about to get another drink when his attention was drawn to the mark on her rump. "Eh.. that was from a close call with a hungry cat.." She gave a small sigh but shrugged it aside. It marked her but she really didn't mind it so much any more. sure, it still stung from time to time, but now... she rarely thought of it unless it was brought um by some one.
Her ears flicked back some at what had sounded like a small bash on her name. Sure.. she found her name unique.. but she liked that is was unique. " I'm sorry if you don't like it... but I happen to think it's rather lovely... My parents were quite nice enough to name me after the primroses... Briallan, that's what it means.. Primrose.. Oralee however.. means light...." She thought some.. "But then I never gave that name.. but there you have it.. Briallan Oralee.. Primrose light." She supposed it may have sounded silly when she laid it out like that but she rather did like her name. "If you find it too... distracting to call me Briallan then just call me Bri.."

His head cocked ever so slightly as she mentioned exploring the land in which she had her siblings had grown up in. Opening his mouth he was about to say something but ended up closing it before the words ever came out. Looking down into the water he locked eyes with his reflection, thoughts had begun to blossom in his mind, memories. He had once had siblings hadn’t he? It seemed like such a long time ago that he had almost forgotten about them. Even when the herd was intact he hadn’t spent much time with them, something he had come to somewhat regret as time went on. Clearing his throat he attempted to conceal a somewhat melancholy tone. “A-are you close to them? Your siblings I mean.” He could have kicked himself for getting further into conversation but he found himself wanting to know. What was it like to be close to your siblings? How much had he missed out on due to his own stubborn pride?

Red hair fell in odd strands over his neck as he shook his head, attempting to rattle such weak thoughts loose. He again focused on the healing slash on her rump, he found himself surprised that such a dainty creature was able to survive an attack from something as vicious as a wild cat. “It’s a wonder you survived.” He stated rather unbelievingly. How had SHE, this little creature before him, fought off such an attack? She must have had help. He found his expression changing to that of one who was in shock. Her tone had taken a quick turn and she had gotten up in arms about her name. What had he said to influence this change? Blinking a couple of times he snorted and lowered his head, pretending to take another drink of water. “Primrose,” he said quietly, “how very lovely.”

Giving a small sigh, she shook her annoyance aside at his question of her siblings. "I guess I am.. I've seen my sister more than my brother though... He's a bit shy so it's not surprising that he's pretty much dropped off the face of the earth so to speak. My sister on the other hand, she's.. reckless.. doesn't know when enough's enough.. It can be irritating and annoying but.. it doesn't mean i care any less for her." She offered a small smile to show she was beyond the thing about her name now. "I had a bit of help... Some one came in and chased away the cat or I'd have likely gotten worse.." She gave a small shrug. She knew she wasn't nearly as bold as her sister was now. No, she liked to ere on the edge of caution rather than to boldly rush into the unknown danger. This didn't mean though that she didn't lack an adventurous side though, hers just wasn't to the extent of her sister's or mother's. "It's a pleasure meeting you though Roman... I didn't mean to sound.... curt with you.." She smiled once more.

He had begun to feel a little better now that her expression had become more relaxed but he was still bewildered by what had caused the irritation in the first place. He listened to her talk about her siblings intently, taking in the descriptions of each. He felt his heart droop a little in his chest; it wasn’t natural to know nothing of your siblings….of your blood for that matter. He had spent too much time trying to be worthy of his father and not enough with his family. A lump built in his throat but he swallowed it down with painful ease. “What about your parents?” The question slipped out before he had really thought of it. His original intention hadn’t been to get into a conversation but he found the topic of families quite interesting.

The topic of her being attacked was a welcomed distraction to the emotions running through his mind. “I am certain you would have, you don’t look the warrior type to me.” He stated bluntly. He was in no way sexist; he had met many mares who had topped him in everything he did. It was just that this mare looked about as frightening as the petals of the flowers tangled in her hair. “How did you end up in the predicament anyway?” Had she wandered around too noisily? The thoughts of mastering his task still rang in the back of his mind but Briallan hadn’t walked away as many others had. She had stayed and spoken to him, he hadn’t had a conversation in quite some time. Though he wouldn’t admit it, he had begun to enjoy the company. Her smile caught him off guard, one moment her features had twisted into something unattractive and now her face had lit up with the beauty he had noticed upon her first arrival. Mares were a troubling sort, he would never be able to puzzle them out. “It is nice meeting you as well…Briallan.” For whatever reason saying her name embarrassed him. The feelings it had evoked earlier had made him nervous. He still didn’t know what he had done. “It is in the past.” He added simply.

"My parents?" She wondered what the curiosity was about family with this one. She was definitely a curious sort. "Well, they're um.. close I guess you could say.. My bother's often pretty busy looking after the herd though. She's very nice. And my father.. He's gentle, calm... loving. I don't think he'd be able to live with himself if something were to happen to any of us."

She had to chuckle though at his mention of her not being much of a fighting mare. "I agree... I'm not really much of a fighter.. That would be Florian.. She's the bigger rough and tumbler of the two of us..." She gave him another smile. It was a happy thing that he'd decided to let it pass into the past and not fret over the small mood change.

He could only imagine what she must be thinking about all of his questions about family. Though he didn’t see it as odd to ask he knew it must be different. Her explanation brought a solitary thought to his mind; this was the life he could have had. He could have been the one exploring the territory of his family; he could have been able to speak of his family so easily. If only he had been good enough to be known as his father’s son. If only he hadn’t been such a failure of a son. The corners of his mouth pulled down in a frown and he snorted. He wouldn’t be a failure anymore, nor would he dwell on the pathetic memories of his past. “Sounds nice.” No other words came to him than those two which left his mouth bitterly.

Eyeing her from the top of her head to her cloven hooves he tried to imagine what her sister looked like. He couldn’t imagine she would be any bulkier then Briallan. He hadn’t encountered her parents so he couldn’t compare the sizes to find out what the genetics must be like. “Looking at you I can’t imagine she would be much bulkier. Yet, you still travel by yourself instead of with another. Why is that? Are you looking to be attacked again?” He couldn’t fathom why, after being attacked once, she would wish to wander off on her own again. “Do you have something to prove or what?” He chuckled, not knowing that the very question he had asked was a hypocritical one.
PostPosted: Wed Jan 05, 2011 2:03 am

"Flo... she's bulkier... takes after our mother who looks much like you.. only without wings... She even wears a ring of roses in her hair and around her neck like mother.. only.. hers are black instead of red.." She wondered if her rambling got tiresome for the time being.. "Well.. I've really nothing to prove to myself I guess.. Just that I want to see things for myself and not be drug off on some side tracked... adventure that's ore risk than worth by my sister... I want to see things on my own without her trying to get herself and me into trouble.."

“Like me?” He laughed amusement evident in the tone. How could a mare even come close to being like a stallion? “Primrose, I must say you are quite funny. I cannot even begin to picture a mare that looks like me.” Before he got too carried away he caught himself. Had he really just called her Primrose? What on earth had possessed him to do something like that? Clearing his throat he looked to the sky which was now becoming golden with the sun’s final rays. Had he really spent this much time talking to her? After his moment of laughter his face had become stoic and serious once more. Through this entire conversation he had not smiled once nor had he chuckled but imagining a female who looked like he did could only evoke laughter. “If your mother looks like a stallion it is probably good that she have flowers in her mane.”

“You mean to tell me that your parents don’t worry about you anyway? I would have thought you would have gotten into trouble just for going out on your own. I am sure they fear you will die every time you go out.” A quiet splash sounded as he crossed the small, shallow stream so that he was on the same side as her. He hadn’t even realized they had been talking on separate sides of land until now; he was surprised they hadn’t been shouting. He stopped a few feet away from her, still keeping his distance but at least now he wasn’t feeling as though he were hiding from her. Up close she looked even more fragile than before. “With your gangly legs I can’t imagine you would be able to run very fast if you were in danger.” He had ignored the one thing his mother had shared with him. Never comment on a female’s appearance unless it was complimentary.
