"Brrrr!"

Laughing, Mardi pulled herself up out of the snowdrift and shook off. The gesture was only somewhat successful; clumps of the heavy, wet snow still clung to her curly mane and tail. But it was enough for her, as who would complain about a little snow in the winter? Certainly not her; besides, she could easily see the humor in the situation. She had been walking along when suddenly, down she went into the snow, having accidentally walked off of a hill into a ditch filled with the soft fluffy snow without realizing. It had taken a little floundering, but she had managed to free herself before too long and stood, still laughing, on more solid ground. Her bright coat was still liberally dusted with snow, but she stood out like a beacon against the white backdrop to any that might look in her direction.

And that was fine with her; other mares had asked her how she could stand being so intensely colorful, and she had laughed in reply. After all, who wouldn't want to be so easy to see?

There were reasons that it always paid to be attentive. Mardi had seen the stallion coming way before he started to slip; she had actually been really excited at the prospect of meeting someone knew, moreso because she had seen the stallion actually change direction and come towards her. In fact, she had started to move towards him as well when she had realized that he was out of control. Not wanting to get steamrolled, she made an attempt to scurry out of the way...

Only to find herself sinking into the snow again. Looks like she'd found another soft spot, oop! Cringing even as she laughed at the absurdity of the situation, she rolled herself up as tightly as she could manage in the snow, calling out, "Brace for impact!"

Well, that had been lucky; defensive measures aside, Mardi hadn't been looking forward to the prospect of a collision. Sure, it would be an interesting story later, but in the immediate future it would be nothing short of painful. So it was with a smile of mingled amusement and relief that she looked up at the stallion, bobbing her head a bit in greeting. "Hello yourself, oh you of the philosophical nature! Nice steering there at the end, if I may say so!"

Being in the habit of offering a nose in greeting, Mardi was momentarily chagrined to find that she couldn't reach that far. But after a brief pause, she was laughing, giving the stallion a helpless shrug. "I guess the snow is really determined to keep me in place, huh? At least it's comfy!" With that, she began to wiggle about, in a determined attempt to free herself.

Ah, to be larger like a stallion; it would certainly make doing things like getting out a snow drift easier! Mardi had to grin, albeit ruefully, as she watched the compartive ease with which the stallion freed himself. She was a bit more firmly stuck, but he'd gone deeper into the snow. Still, if he could get out so quickly, then so too could she! "No thanks, I will persevere. Watch and be amazed at my skills!"

Grinning as she spoke, Mardi resumed rocking back and forth in the snow, pushing it away on either side until she was mostly free and actually flopped over onto her side into the hole. "There! We have success!" Scrambling to her feet, she whuffed the snow and hair away from her face, then offered the stallion her brightest smile of greeting. "Talk about a meet-cute; I'm Mardi!"
