It was nearing dark, the orange, pink, and purple streaked sky rapidly melting into night, a blackness beginning to slowly creep up the walls of Arcana. Most of the students were inside, getting ready for bed if they were not in it already. The lights of the wide, expansive halls had been dimmed, and one by one, the lights in the individual rooms were shut off, light snores being heard from some rooms, nothing at all heard from others. If the student was not in the room, it was most likely that they were at their trainer's.
Hector was, in fact, in neither of those places. In fact, he stood just inside of the densely covered forest, yawning a bit as he walked over to a particularly large and plentiful tree, heavy with thick branches and shrubbery. Flicking his tail, he hauled himself up onto the lowest branch, swinging himself up onto it gracefully before moving to climb to the next one, then the next one, until he found one that he could settle atop quite nicely, his back against the tree trunk.
From here he could see most of Arcana, partially obscured by the foliage, backlit by the soft glow of the moon far off in the distant sky. There were still a few night owl students wandering the halls, their fingers tiny and obscure from the distance Hector was sitting at. He supposed he should have been in there with them, curling up in the safety of his own warm bed, but he couldn't sleep.
The night air was lightly cold, a small gust of wind teasing his already messy hair, and Hector pulled his coat more firmly around himself, settling against the tree as he breathed in the cool, quiet night air. It perhaps wasn't the safest idea he could have had, going out into the woods alone at night, but it certainly was refreshing and somewhat relaxing - for the most part.

How relaxing it was. There was something about the night that put Kieran at an immediate ease, relaxed his shoulders and settled his mind. The day had been spent with so much learning, he didn't really know what to do with it all. He'd been stressed and all he wanted to do was go for a walk. Use his legs for something other than dodging people in a hallway or kicking listlessly at a desk.
When he came upon the edge of the forest, the duskull decided against it and began to hover as he crossed into the shadowy retreat. He didn't like walking through it; it just never felt right. He'd spent his earliest days floating around, and he could still remember how he had worried about touching the ground and connecting with the shadows of the trees.
It seemed silly, now, to think that he would become trapped within the darkness of the forest if he touched it. Lifting a pale arm, he watched as shadows stretched over it and disappeared, replaced with new ones. They were always touching him - they always had been. He had been so foolish before.
Something had been nagging at him since he had left the school; no, he wasn't avoiding Gideon. The boy was asleep in his dorm, the last he'd checked. He just... wanted to get out for a bit. Gideon was safe. He'd checked. He was... safe. He looked skyward and narrowed his eyes.
Someone was in the tree above him.
Kieran stared, coming to a halt. His feet planted themselves on the ground and served as a grounding force to steady him, because he was a little shocked at the unexpected face. He recognized it as Hector, the man he had seen a couple times and actually spoken to. Hector seemed like a nice person. He sighed and shook his head, looking back up.
"Hector, you startled me," he called without gesture or any other sign of greeting. The wind ruffled his cloak and felt a little cold, but he didn't move from his spot beneath the tree. A slightly disapproving look bent his brow. "It is late. What are you doing out here alone?"
