How do you get a fishing trophy?

There are a couple of ways:
--- Finish in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd for that month of fishing at one of the 3 fishing spots. (gold / silver / bronze)
--- Finish with the most overall points for all 3 lakes. (overall trophy)
--- Collect the most junk for that month of fishing. (junking trophy)
--- Find someone who will sell you their fishing trophy. (very unlikely)

I was wondering how many Old Boot's would it take to make a pair of Patchwork Boots.

It takes 1,000 Old Boots to exchange for a pair of Patchwork Boots.

when i catch 10 of _____ should i upgrade them into the next step or should i just collect them?

Most people either save or sell their fish. The only reason to upgrade them to the next larger fish would be if you were trying to get enough fish for an item, or trying to trade for a rare.
